Yennai Arindhaal Review
Director: Gautham Menon
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Cinematography: Dan MacArthur
Editing: Anthony
Cast: Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Anuksha Shetty, Arun Vijay, Vivek, Suman, Ashish Vidyarthi, Parvathy Nair
youtube
One of the most anticipated films of 2015 is here: Yennai Arindhaal, the life of Satyadev I.P.S., the third and final cop to appear in GVM’s cop trilogy, and a man with many friends and enemies who create a web of crime, deception, and action in his busy life. Although it may just seem like the typical masala movie at first, YA is a different, bold attempt on action films in particular, and has a mix of everything: action, romance, and a bit of mystery.
Newcomer Arun Vijay, who plays friend-turned-foe Victor Manohar in the film, has clearly given everything he could for this film, and his acting has turned him from a struggling actor into a future hero. Ajith & Trisha also did their roles well. Parvathy did what was expected of her, but we could have seen more of her interesting character. And Anuksha really could have lost a bit of weight.
The simple editing and cinematography is what makes YA unique and different than almost any other film in Kollywood, and it clearly suits the great storyline, accompanied by Harris’ melodious music.
In conclusion, YA is an amazing cop film like no other! Watch it as soon as possible.
Rating: 4.5 Stars
CBFC Rating: U/A

என்னை அறிந்தால் குட்டி அஜித் இந்த பையனா? இப்போ எப்படி இருக்கிறார் தெரியுமா? #ajith #yennaiarindhaal #ஜாக்ராபின் #ut #utcinema #cinemanews #universaltamil

DemiGod - Ajith
Rajni brought in me the excitement each time he was on the sliver screen but that was in my 10s and Kamal was too much for my little knowledge then. When 18 and into the first year of college , I had a star to fight for and that was AjithKumar by then he was fondly called "The Ultimate Star" by his followers and considered by most till date as one of the most Manly protagonists of Tamil Cinema. I was not hooked to his stature not by his acting skills but his Racing. While he Raced he exhibited the loveliest traits of Being Oneself that is to say he followed his Heart. I should also add the awesome determination which he possessed during those days, he raced with as much passion as he could not worried on missing the films and followers. They say his Fans are the most Loyal and that's partly because of how much Fans loved him even when he was not acting. He carries a Persona which makes people in the age group of 20-40 just go crazy and he's been credited with a statement "Ajith is a True Gentleman" by the people who had watched him closely.
Ajith with a mere walk scores more than what a six packs hero would and those who criticize him for the lack of acting skills should have been blindfolded as they have not noticed how much his eyes talk. No human is Perfect and no actor is flawless, his success is evident when people fondly call him "Thala" (Leader). He's one of the most successful crowd pullers to the theatres and all these Stardom inspite of he dissolving his Fan clubs. His Cine career might not have had a Classic to be remembered for, but his legacy would live on forever as the one who handled Stardom better than the most.

Yennai Arindhaal was absolutely awful, IMO. The story lagged, it had random jumps, and got to its point with 45 mins left. I know people love it, and I'm in the minority. Then I watched Mardaani today, with Rani Mukerji, and what. A. Contrast. A cop movie that was really good, with thrills, plot, and a likable, relatable hero. Menon should seriously stop making the same movie over and over and over again.

Yennai Arindhal - deja vu
There is one beautiful moment early on in Gautham Menon’s Yennai Arindhal – the encounter cop poses as an auto driver, awaiting the go-ahead to kill. He is just a backup, still the mood is tense. He knows he has to kill, should it ever come to that. He keeps waiting, only to find a pregnant women climbing onto the back-seat, about to enter labor pains. At that instant, he takes a call – I have killed enough. I might as well do something to help her. And he drives her to the hospital. The woman of course, doesn’t know his true identity and she insists on paying him before she is wheeled away into the maternity ward.
And in that one moment alone, Gautham Menon, the film-maker shows you what he is still capable of.
There are a lot of things to like about Ajith’s latest film with Gautham Menon – for one, the punch dialogue in the lift right before the gun-fight – I could imagine the scene bringing the roof down with screams and whistles back in Chennai.
I loved the way the first romance was detailed – the progress of the romance and the growing affection between Sathya Dev and Hemanika was stated metaphorically through the growth of her daughter. It feels, so natural when an IPS officer and a dancer-exponent mom decide to marry after four years of courtship. After this, it would be very hard for me to accept the thunderbolt-love-at-first-sight kind of sequences – I mean, for how long?
Towards the end of the film, I loved the confrontational scenes involving Arun Vijay. He seems to carry a natural air of menace about him – when he threatens, it does make you a little nervous. And I enjoyed the little surprise involving the GPS at the end – though the same twist was filmed with far more finesse in a little known film called ‘Burma’ that released last year. There is a nice offhand moment in the second half when the goons come looking for ‘venugopal’ to Ajith’s house – I burst out laughing at the utterly unexpected humor.
youtube
But other than these occasional bright spots, Yennai Arindhal is just a long drag.
The problem with the film is that it evokes a sense of déjà vu – in every scene. The plot points are repeated – the hero finds his feet when his friend’s daughter is kidnapped. The cop falls in love with a divorcee who has a daughter and they meet on a flight back to India. The hero protects the heroine at his house – the two cops, the street and the Scorpio car carrying the goons all remind you of ‘Kaakha Kaakha’. The ‘mazhai varum’ song is so reminiscent of the ‘Kadhal Konjam’ from ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’. Nearly, everything in the film – the screaming villain, the background score, the songs, the encounter scenes, the chase in the end – they all remind you of Gautham Menon’s earlier films.
That is not entirely a bad thing –every film maker has to have a signature stamp and it is okay to see that repeated across films. But when those tropes are the only things in the film, it does become tiresome. The problem is not that Yennai Arindhal is devoid of emotion, but it just evokes the same emotions from the same scenes that we have seen in the same director’s previous films. . While the central premise of organ trafficking is pulpy, the film does little to expand on this premise. The scenes are predictable. The chase sequences lack a tension. As such, Yennai Arindhal, is all form with little substance underneath.
