Yeloli Watch Party!
Episode 11: I’m Not Just a Doll
English transcript
When last seen, a guy in a hoodie had found Loli in her doll box in the street, while Mary and Ironhide were racing outside.
This episode kicks off with the guy deciding to make off with Loli, since she looks to be a well-made, expensive doll. Ironhide tries to distract the guy by crashing into his leg (via riding in a rollerskate), but this just results in the just taking Ironhide too.
As he picks them up, an older woman comes running out of a house shouting, “Stop right there, boy!” Instead the guy quickly hails a taxi. Poor Mary comes running around the corner just in time to see him making off with her toys / friends.
Naturally, she’s distraught. So is the older woman, who is shouting “You thief!” after the taxi. The woman explains to Mary that Hoodie Man is her good-for-nothing son, who doesn’t have a job and plays computer games all day. “When I don't give him money, he steals my pension money.“ Mary says he also stole her toys and asks what his address is.
The old woman gives it to her and adds, “Hey little girl! As he is mean to his own mother, you can see that he is not a good person. Be careful!” OMG lady, maybe you shouldn’t let this LITTLE KID go to his place all by herself then!
Meanwhile, Hoodie Guy arrives home. (Unclear how he can afford a house without a job.) He gloats about how he scored money from his mom and two toys to sell. But soon he is engrossed in a video game.
We also get a Microsoft Windows cameo.
Loli and Ironhide ponder how to escape. Loli observes that her magic isn’t working and concludes it’s because she is physically too far away from Mary. (I am positive this bit of lore will be forgotten and discarded in future episodes, and was only written in to explain why Loli doesn’t turn Hoodie Guy into a bug.) Also, Hoodie Guy has a bunch of broken toys around the place, like he’s Sid from Toy Story . . . ?
Well anyway, Mary arrives at Hoodie Guy’s house and boldly knocks on the door. He answers it, thinking it’s the pizza guy.
Mary says she saw him with her toys and she would like them back. He refuses, says they’re his now and slams the door on her.
He’s more convinced than ever that Loli is very valuable, so he puts her in her doll box and locks it. With a key. I don’t understand where he got the key, we’ve never seen the doll box having / needing a key before. At any rate, she’s trapped.
But outside, Mary clenches her fists and vows that she will not leave until she gets Loli and Ironhide back.
My thoughts: Man, the stranger danger vibes were strong with this one! I was like “NO MARY, GET AN ADULT TO BACK YOU UP!” the whole time. I think they could’ve had the same general plot with the thief being another kid, which would have been less creepy.
Really enjoyed the Microsoft Windows moment and the bad guy’s house looking all crooked to drill home that he’s bad, like what do the neighbor’s think?
