Art by @zadiexa & reposted with permission. ❤️ Please go and read her post. @kyuuuail alerted me of some problematic aspects of the #yellowperilsupportsblackpower hashtag and @zadiexa’s explanation hits the nail on the head. Don’t forget about history, but also focus on doing the right things here and now to support the movement. #blacklivesmatter #blm #asians4blacklives #socialjusticeart #artwork #art (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBHFydej5D0/?igshid=17e5e6p1zbgo

Art by my fam @s133pdead. ✊🏽 #Repost with @get_repost ・・・ We interrupt your incredibly irregularly scheduled APA Sketch Project joints to take a moment for our Black brothers and sisters. Been sitting on these pencils with a broken heart for a couple days, but seeing the protests across the country today gave me the impetus to complete the inks once I got off work. It should come as no surprise that I feel this way, but let me be clear: Black lives fucking matter, goddamnit. I’m beyond sick of seeing Black folk being murdered in snuff films with no justice being served, and I’m way past pissed at the callous inaction of leaders. Please accept this small tribute to a good man whose life was needlessly taken in a horrific manner. Rest in Power, George Floyd. You deserved better. #blacklivesmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforahmaud #justiceforbreonnataylor #sayhisname #sayhername #saytheirnames #georgefloyd #bigfloyd #houston #icantbreathe #nojusticenopeace #asians4blacklives #yellowperilsupportsblackpower #solidarity #strongertogether #procreate #s133pdeadart https://www.instagram.com/p/CA3Kfg0J2Jg/?igshid=1soy5h86nezrl

Repost @hiphop4change ・・・ In lieu of recent hate crimes against the Asian community, we thought we would promote a more commonly dismissed side of Black history— one that is intertwined with Asian history. White supremacy made us believe that Black and Asian people have always been at odds with each other, when in fact, history tells quite a different story. Hip Hop For Change and the Black community stands in solidarity with the Asian community in this time of tragedy. As an organization, we have received an overwhelming amount of support from the Asian community in response to the 2020 #BLM protests. We are beyond grateful for the support, and now it is our time to pay it forward. Let’s continue to build and show up for each other. Let’s invest in our relationships with each other so that we can better protect our communities. Together, we will welcome a new and stronger era of Afro-Asian solidarity. . . . . . . #justiceforvicha #vicharatanapakdee #blackandasiansolidarity #solidarity #community #socialjustice #nojusticenopeace #theycantburnusall #oakland #sanfrancisco #endwhitesupremacy #asiansforblacklives #blackpeopleforasianlives #yellowperilsupportsblackpower #communitylove #bayarea #empowerment #communitybuilding #antiasianracism #afroasian #afroasiansolidarity #justiceforvicharatanapakdee #unity #unityindiversity #hiphopforchange #saveourchinatowns #malcolmx #brucelee #chinatown https://www.instagram.com/p/CLGVbNSBuMv/?igshid=1w3ivb0esgwol

Happy 80th @brucelee 🤜🏽🙏🏽@kareemabduljabbar_33 writes- the filmmaker was sloppy, somewhat racist & shirked his responsibility to basic truth in #onceuponatimeinhollywood ...the movie is fiction, those scenes will live on in our shared cultural conscience as impressions of those real people, thereby corrupting our memory of them built on their real-life actions...That’s why filmmakers have a responsibility when playing w/ people’s perceptions of admired historic people to maintain a basic truth about the content of their character.Tarantino’s portrayal of Bruce does not live up to this standard...Tarantino has the artistic right to portray Bruce any way he wants. This controversy has left me torn.Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers because he is so bold, uncompromising & unpredictable...I attend each Tarantino film as if it were an event, knowing that his distillation of the ’60s&70s action movies will be much more entertaining than a simple homage. That’s what makes the Bruce Lee scenes so disappointing, not so much on a factual basis, but as a lapse of cultural awareness.Bruce Lee was my friend&teacher. That doesn’t give him a free pass...But it does give me some insight into the man.I first met Bruce when I was a student at UCLA looking to continue my martial arts studies...I started in NYC.We quickly developed a friendship as well as a student-teacher relationship. He taught me the discipline&spirituality of martial arts.During our years of friendship,he spoke passionately about how frustrated he was with the stereotypical representation of Asians in film&TV. The only roles were for inscrutable villains or bowing servants...Chinese servant goes by the insulting name of ‘hey boy’(Kam Tong)...replaced in season4 by a female character referred to as ‘Hey Girl’(Lisa Lu). Asian men were portrayed as sexless accessories to a scene, while the women were subservient. This was how African-American men &women were generally portrayed until the advent of Sidney Poitier &blaxploitation films... #brucelee #yellowperilsupportsblackpower (at El Señor New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIHYlLOFeAj/?igshid=12waokilexrvh

A history of suburbs, why we need to #defundthepolice and how Asians and the “model minority” myth aid in oppressing other people of color. FYI, for some entertainment that tackles this issue, @wongfupro has a series called Yappie that tackles Asian American relations as privileged “model minorities” and our relationship with the black community. #blacklivesmatter #peoplesbudgetla #yellowperilsupportsblackpower #bipoc #modelminority (at Arcadia, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBbWQzMBxvf/?igshid=52dz41yxrp3y

Yellow Peril Supports Black Power
In the midst of a global pandemic, a social movement composed of millions of people around the world are fighting to overcome injustices and secure a better future. Without regards for their own safety, these brave protestors are pushing against the norm and moving to change the systematically ingrained racism which has become rooted in our country. These millions of people have become one solidified entity, devoid of race, color, and religion, fighting for the righting of wrongs. Brandishing signs emblazoned with phrases like “No Justice, No Peace” and “We Can’t Breathe” protesters march down streets and take a stand in front of government buildings. Among the sea of signs, one phrase catches my eye. Yellow Peril supports Black Power. A combination of two minority groups unifying themselves and showing their support for one another. Intrigued, I looked into it. In no time I was reading a 2017 article written by Dan Truong for the Huffington Post(https://www.huffpost.com/entry/yellow-peril-supports-bla_b_7781586). Following the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, protestors rose up calling for justice. Again the phrase came back up with some protestors carrying signs saying “Yellow Peril supports Black Power”. According to the article, this wasn’t the first time the phrase had appeared. Since 1969 at a rally in Oakland, Asians have been fighting alongside their Black brethren. To fully understand this, we have to look at the term “Yellow Peril” itself. Yellow Peril or Yellow Terror was a label born from the fear the Western world had for the immigration of many Asians to countries like the United States and other western countries. What was once considered a derogatory term for Asian Americans was claimed by the same people who it was used against and rendered powerless. As asked in the article, what does yellow peril have to do with black power? In fact, the two minority groups have more in common that one would think. This article explains the relations between the two groups beautifully and how they’ve repeatedly united to fight against injustice. The two groups are a shining example of how unity can bring change.
