What's this fish doing? While it may look like the yellowhead jawfish is eating eggs, it's actually keeping them safe from predators.  This colorful father carries his children in his mouth until they hatch. This act is called "mouth-brooding." The father will keep the eggs safe, even if it means that the dad cannot eat the whole time the eggs are in his mouth.  This father is certainly dedicated!  Picture by Kevin Bryant, flickr user mentalblock

Biscayne National Park is home to one of the coolest dads in the animal kingdom, the yellowhead jawfish. After the female lays her eggs and the male fertilizes them, the dad will take the eggs in his mouth for safekeeping. During the time it takes for the eggs to mature, dad doesn't eat, but he does roll the eggs around in his mouth to keep them aerated until they're ready to hatch. After 10-14 days, tiny baby jawfish pop out of the eggs. Thanks to Ned DeLoach for the great photo!

YELLOWHEAD JAWFISH (Opistognathus aurifrons) - ©JimC_1946/Jim Chambers
The Yellow-headed jawfish is found in coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea. The head and upper body are a light, but brilliant, yellow color slowly fading to a pearlescent blue hue. The mouth and jaws are, as suggested by the common name, a signature of the jawfishes.
It remains near its relatively small territory, and is typically seen with only the head and upper section of its body protouding from its burrow, although it sometimes can be found hovering nearby. It is able to arrange material using its mouth to carry sand, shells, or small rocks from one location to another, or removing them from its burrow, and placing them in more preferred locations.
As shown, it is a mouthbrooder, after the female lays their eggs and the male has fertilized them, he scoops them up and carries them his mouth until they hatch.
