Lost Ark Dreaming is a post-apocalyptic fantasy taking place in a handful of high rise apartments located in what used to be Lagos Nigeria, which has been drowned along with most of the world in what’s referred to as a Second Deluge. Our three protagonists are an analyst named Yekini, an engineer named Touya, and a mid-level administrator in the Office of the Pinnacle Leadership named Ngozi.…

ANDRÉ PIERRE ROMAIN | OBITUARY by Regine Romain
Sunday, January 28, 1940 – Sunday, June 9, 2024
By Régine Roumain (daughter)
André Pierre Romain was born on Sunday, January 28, 1940, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to the late Fannie Privert and Turenne Romain. He has one surviving brother– Camile Romain. He is preceded in death by siblings: Renée, Marthe, Solanges, Emmanuel, Viviane and Junique.
André spent his youth in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and emigrated to the United States as a young man in his twenties. He was a brilliant artist who in his lifetime made groundbreaking Kompa jazz music with "Ibo Combo" in Haiti and abroad. He was a vocalist, guitarist, pianist, conga player, and dedicated band member. From his extensive 8 track tapes, albums, cassettes, CDs, and video collection, anyone who knew him would get to know his love of music and would invariably be introduced to new sounds of talented artists from around the world. André’s interests and talent in the arts also led him to learn photography and wood sculpting. André’s home became his art studio and his family was gifted with learning the importance of regular practice as an important tool in striving for excellence.
Affectionately known as “Papi,” André was a man in a constant state of evolution and growth. He clearly understood his human limitations and still strived toward greatness each day. He was kind, loving, intellectually curious, and simultaneously a prolific student and sage teacher. He was a self-taught man and positively influenced so many with his wisdom, ingenuity, and humor.
He was a man who smiled often and devotedly uplifted the tenets of his Christian faith as a Jehovah’s Witness. He believed above all things, that we should have "intense love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8). Brother Romain will be greatly missed by members of the Laurel and Bryans Road congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
André was a man greatly in love with his wife Gladys and remained devoted to her for 55 years until his untimely passing. Together they were entrepreneurs and supported themselves and their family through independent and creative means.
In the later years of his life, André became a strong advocate for healthy lifestyles and would promote daily walking and grounding as restorative healing to everyone that he met. At the time of his passing at 84 years of age, he was walking over 17,000 steps (7.7 miles) regularly. His commitment to well-being, and holistic healing through plant-based, whole foods was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
André is survived by his children - Dudchen Romain, Patrick Edouard, Iman Shabazz (née Ingrid Regis), Régine Romain, and Natacha Romain. He was blessed to have 10 grandchildren: Stephanie, Yekini, Rachide, Tanika, Tiffani, Julien, Prince Aziz, Rahman, Aishah and Ngozi. He was further blessed to have 3 great-grandchildren: Alexa, Anika and Yonathan. He also had a sweet connection with Maximus, his canine “grandpup.”
André is loved and will be greatly missed by members of the Naar, Pierre, Bruno, Dumorné, Critchlow, Anderson, Paul, Pratt, and Wedderburn families, his daughter-in-law Ketzia Edouard and lifetime friends Alix Pascal and Antoine Bruno.
The voice of André Romain is immortalized through his music, which is still played in Haiti today. He leaves his family a tremendous legacy of his goodwill, artistry and faith.
THANK YOU – **The Family of André Romain**
We wish to express genuine, heartfelt gratitude for the many kind and beautiful expressions of sympathy, support and love during our time of bereavement. We sincerely appreciate each act of kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity shared during this time.

Gary K. Wolfe Reviews Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa
May 25, 2024 Gary K. Wolfe
The idea of social stratification enforced through architecture – in other words, high-rises with the rich living at the top – has been a staple of SF imagery at least since Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, and it’s been extraordinarily useful as a way of exploring everything from overpopulation to Ballardian alienation to urban dystopia to – more recently – the hazards of climate change. A few months ago, I noted that these megastructures showed up in a couple of stories in Wole Talabi’s Convergence Problems, and now a giant tower called the Pinnacle – rigidly segregated into Uppers, Midders, and Lowers – is the setting for Suyi Davies Okungbowa’s Lost Ark Dreaming. This led me to wonder if the idea might hold particular resonance for urban Nigeria, and Okungbowa does offer some very chilling observations about the possible future of Lagos. While the novella’s main action is set in a long-inundated Nigeria in an indeterminate future, several interchapters present documents from as early as 2012, and one of these notes that ‘‘about two in three Lagosians live in slums, and a significant number of these communities reside dangerously within reach of the shore.’’ Rather than try to protect these communities, the document explains, the governor simply evicted them, citing precedents dating back to colonial times and, in particular, an actual 2016 eviction that displaced some 30,000 people. ‘‘Often, the lands seized in these grabs are then offered to capitalist ventures and investors who gentrify them for more economic purposes from which the government benefits.’’
That, in a nutshell, is the setting and history for the problem that confronts Yekini, a mid-level analyst for a police-like agency called the Commission for the Protection of the Fingers (the ‘‘fingers’’ are five high-rises originally built to house the population above the floods, although only the Pinnacle is still inhabited). Together with a higher-level bureaucrat named Ngozi, she is assigned to investigate a potentially dangerous breach in one of the lower levels – below the level of the surrounding waters – which she suspects may be not just a leak, but an incursion by creatures called Yemoja’s Children, aquatic dwellers who might recall the creature from the Black Lagoon to Western readers. Joined by a resourceful lower-level foreman named Tuowo, Yekini and Ngozi begin to learn not only about the true nature of the Children, but about the extent to which the elite upper levels might go to protect their own safety and hegemony.
One of the flaws of much dystopian fiction is the failure to credibly map a path from here to there, offering instead half-baked backstories involving convenient catastrophes or violent coups. This is fine as long as the dystopia is to be read as purely metaphorical, but as speculative SF it omits a lot of connective tissue. A striking feature of Lost Ark Dreaming is how those interchapters map directly on to the central narrative, showing how a combination of inevitable climate disaster, predatory capitalism, and chronic inequality can lead credibly from our own present to a society like that of the Pinnacle. The story of an idealistic cop uncovering and then fighting against a corrupt system is hardly new, of course, and later the story takes a mystical turn, involving a godlike figure named Queen Conch, that vaguely recalls elements of Rivers Solomon’s The Deep. But Okungbowa’s clear-eyed look at present dangers and the compassion and conviction of his characters as they come to confront the dark realities of their society lend the tale a memorable and even heroic resonance.

By • Olalekan Fagbade JUST IN; My Wife locks me in the room, bullies me,”- Husband cries for help “My wife bullies and blackmails me,’’ a divorce-seeking man, Mr Kazeem Yekini told a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan on Thursday. He pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage between him and his estranged wife, Opeyemi, saying the marriage had ruined his life. He said Opeyemi was in the habit of blackmailing him everywhere and causing untold damage to his reputation. Yekini alleged that his wife cast a spell on him causing him untold hardship while at the same time promising to continue to blackmail him all around Ibadan. “As if these were not enough, she locks me up in a room, thus preventing me from going to my daily business. “She also seized my car keys and invited the `Amotekun’ corps (the security network in the Southwest) to deal with me for no reason,’’ Yekini alleged. He told the court that neighbours and family members never attempted to intervene “because they are afraid of her’’. Opeyemi did not deny any of the allegations levelled against her under cross-examination. Instead, she prayed the court to help her to resolve the matter amicably. “It is true that I have been fighting my husband without justification. “Before he decided to come to court, however, I tried all I could to pacify him, but he refused to listen to my pleas for mercy. “If he maintains his stand, I pray the court to grant me custody of the only child between us,’’ Opeyemi pleaded. In her judgment, the court’s president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo noted that the marriage between the duo was not duly consummated and hence, illegal. She pointed out that there was no evidence before the court that Yekini paid Opeyemi’s bride price in their course of living together. She explained further that other essential things necessary for a valid marriage as stipulated in the Customary Law were not presented before Yekini and Opeyemi started to live as husband and wife. She concluded that there was no marriage to be dissolved in the first place. Akintayo awarded custody of the only child produced by the union to Opeyemi and ordered Yekini to pay a monthly allowance of N10,000 for the child’s upkeep. She ruled that the duo could go their separate ways, but ordered them to maintain peace and order. (NAN)

Super Eagles Goals by Nigerian Players
Nigeria, on the other hand, has amassed a significant highlight reel of goals throughout the years, with many of the Super Eagles' goals being appreciated around the world.
The following is a list of the top Nigerian Super Eagles goals, ordered from worst to best. Aesthetic appeal, build-up play, and execution were all prioritized. A goal would not necessarily be penalized for coming during a defeat because the significance of the situation in which the goals were scored is decreased.
The Super Eagles team has achieved tremendous success both within and outside of Africa as a result of the continent's development of some of the most dangerous forwards a club could dream for.
Following their AFCON success in South Africa in 2013, the Super Eagles represented Africa at the Confederations Cup. Nnamdi Oduamadi scored three goals as Stephen Keshi's team won 6-1 to get off to a strong start in the competition.
Another fantastic victory in June was overshadowed by the death of native coach Shaibu Amodu. Rasheed Yekini, Samson Siasia, and Mutiu Adepoju all scored braces as the Super Eagles defeated their European opponents 5-0 in Ibadan's Liberty Stadium.
In the preliminary phase of qualification for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the Liberian Lone Stars and the Super Eagles were placed in the same group.
The Eagles' 2-0 home and away victories were acclaimed, but George Weah's kingsmen struggled in the 2013 AFCON Qualifiers.
The Super Eagles returned to Lagos with a goal after being held to a 1-1 draw by Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou during the 1992 AFCON qualification matches. Surulere National Stadium saw the Super Eagles upset the Stallions 7-1.
The Nigerian national team played a friendly match against the neighboring Benin Republic on Valentine's Day 1977, but there was no brotherly love on exhibit.
Tiko Jelisavcic's Eagles trounced the Squirrels 7-0 in Lagos, thanks to hat-tricks and doubles from Thompson Usiyen and Godwin Iwelimo. While the Squirrels were witnessing the seven wonders of Lagos, Samuel Ojebode and Alloysius Atuegbu both scored goals.

Prior to Sao Tome and Principe's 10-0 thrashing of the country in Morocco on Monday, this 63-year-old result constituted the country's greatest victory ever.
Onyeali Elkana set a Nigerian record by scoring four super eagles goals in this game, a performance not repeated until Yekini in 1991 and then Osimhen three decades later.
