Honestly, working on my novel was one of the biggest and most helpful things.

But! Important addendum, it was working on it *in community*. I was *terrified* of talking about it, because when my depression was bad, I could only perceive my efforts as deficient. So telling other people? About this thing I was working so hard on but that was still awful and trash? I'd already called myself every nasty name, I couldn't bear telling my friends and risk hearing that from them.

Except they were never anything but incredibly supportive for one. And for another, it was the depression telling me what I made was trash, which I only discovered after pushing myself to talk about it.

Talking to my friends about my writing helped me reclaim the joy of writing when I thought I had lost it forever, when I had constant panic attacks whenever I sat down to try and write. Now I was pushing myself to write, not just because I loved it and was frustrated it had changed from a source of joy to a source of pain, but because any advance I made in what I wrote was a chance to talk to my friends afterward about it and feel genuinely, truly happy.

My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.

Even in non-magical universes, in real world historical ones/the past, Emma has SCARS. Some are amusing to her, like her burning her back going after a bad guy while still not trained enough and not waiting for help/with no protection whatsoever even if she knew he had a thing for setting places on fire (she was seventeen and playing Hero before she had the experience to attempt it), some are emotionally painful like two from a man who pretended to be a friend first, curtesy of her mother’s side of the family, they are on opposite sides but one on the hip and one on the back.   To be fair, it’d be unrealistic to live a life like hers and not end up with many, whether they are from battle or surprise attacks. Or falling down places/being stupid. 

She usually hides her burned back with her curls even when it’s not fashionable to keep her hair down (in verses where some dresses would show it) and most are automatically hidden by clothes.   She’s not embarrassed by any and will show them at times but to her it seems easier not to concern people with those in display, she doesn’t want to get all attention on her because of scars when she can do so with dresses and hair.
