‘Somewhere on a small industrial estate in Abelenkpe, a sleepy residential neighborhood in Ghana’s capital city Accra, a quiet streetwear revolution is brewing. It’s here in this unassuming studio space, one that serves as office, workshop, and general hangout, that a crew of fashion entrepreneurs known as Free the Youth is building its empire. Formed in 2013 by Jonathan Coffie and Kelly Foli, then 20 and 17 respectively, the brand has grown to include ten key players, among them art director Kweku Yeboah and PR exec Mecha Clarke. They’re part of a growing wave of West African labels including Waffles N Cream, Motherlan, and Vivendii in Nigeria, that are shaping the look of youth culture on the continent. “We’ve given birth to so many powerful patterns and textiles in this country, like the Kente cloth, but there is so much more,” says Foli, also known as Kelly Kurlz. “The Ghanaian youth culture is a do-it-yourself culture. That’s part of the reason that the street fashion scene here has seen such rapid growth.”

Steph Styles: The Wide-Leg Trouser
Welcome to Steph Styles, our column with influencer and author Stephanie Yeboah, who will be styling fashion’s best trends every month.
As we head into autumn (where did the summer go?!) I’ve started to peruse the shops for transitional pieces that hold up well in warm, windy and cold weather: a chunky knit here, a pea coat there. During my search, I kept coming across the same pair of grey wide-leg trousers, which I would overlook in favour of pieces that seemed to be more ‘flattering‘. Sure, wide-leg trousers made an impact on the catwalks this season, everywhere from Stella McCartney to Acne Studios, creating a striking silhouette on smaller bodies. And yes, they had swagger. But off the catwalk? They’re an unacceptable breach of breeches conduct. Sheer pantaloon-acy, to be given an equally wide berth.
When it comes to plus-size style, there are those of us who have a real phobia of wearing purposely oversized or baggy pieces, for fear they will make us look even bigger than we are. I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t one of the first thoughts that entered my mind when I saw said trousers. Nevertheless, wide-leg trousers are an actual vibe. A mood. A classically cut pair will never go out of style. Besides, when people see plus-size folk in public, our size is normally the first thing they notice, so we may as well walk out in style, wearing something awesome, right?
Wide-leg trousers are great because they are incredibly versatile, slotting neatly into both a working and weekend wardrobe. Thanks to the high waist, they have the power to make your legs look twice as long, and can be worn in a multitude of ways for all occasions, with an assortment of blouses, crop tops, sandals, pumps or boots. Below are three ways I style the Daisy Street grey wide-leg trousers, and the best of the rest to shop now.
Easy Does It
This is an everyday look which I think works well for work as well as more casual events. For those who are new to the wide-leg fit, casual looks are the easiest way to experiment. Start off with a classic, muted colour or fabric, such as navy, grey or black in cotton or a wool blend. Depending on the shade of the trousers, you might want to opt for a top that packs a real punch – this balloon-sleeve cropped jumper from a brand called find, which is exclusive to Amazon, does that brilliantly with these grey trousers. To balance out the extra fabric below, think simple. Choose a well-fitting crew-neck T-shirt or jumper or tuck a top in to highlight front pleats and a high waist. I added classic low-rise black Vans for a super comfortable, casual look.
Date Night Ready
This look is more date-friendly. I styled the trousers here with a pair of geometric sandals for a pop of colour and a recycled bikini top. Yes, that’s right my friends! I find bikini tops have a far wider range of prints, patterns and colours than your bog standard crop tops, plus we love a multitasking piece. I threw on a black denim jacket to tie it all together.
Give Me The Night
Again demonstrating that wide-leg trousers look chic with anything, for the final look I paired them with a lace bodysuit from ASOS Curve and a snake-print silk shirt from Very. It’s giving you evening strolls down Copacabana beach, is it not? You can wear this look with flat or heeled sandals – I opted for the latter, just to ham up the chic nighttime vibe of the outfit. It’s sexy and confident: ultimately what these trousers are all about. There is something about wearing a pair of wide-fit trousers that commands attention when you walk into a room. An iconic, versatile and timeless piece of tailoring for all occasions.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

I don’t have that kind of restraint Nana Aba had - @bridget_otoo reacts to Anyidoho's intended walkout Journalist Bridget Otoo has suggested that she would have done something different than apologising if she found herself in the shoes of Nana Aba Anamoah who rendered an apology to Koku Anyidoho when the guest threatened to walk off a live interview at the mention of his estranged wife. On her maiden edition of the Starr Chat show, March 10, 2021, all hell nearly broke loose when Nana Aba Anamoah asked Koku Anyidoho if a message was sent from his end to his estranged wife on International Women’s Day. Koku Anyidoho who had been evasive throughout the interview got incensed by the question and threatened to walk out of the studio. "I will walk out of the studio, don’t annoy me. If you want me to disturb you, I will go. If you want to see the other side of me, you will see it. I don’t take no hostages," the politician said. An obviously livid Koku Anyidoho stood up and tried to pack his things to leave the studio but opted to continue the interview after Nana Aba Anamoah apologized. Mr. Anyidoho's wife, Jennifer Abena Boahemaa Yeboah, had in an interview with GhanaWeb accused him of sacking her from their matrimonial home amid claims that he was the cause of the death of their daughter Sitsofe. Reacting to the incident, Bridget Otoo in a tweet said "Nana Aba asked Koku if he reached out to his female friends and his wife on ‘International Women’s Day, Koku Anyhidoho becomes angry and visibly shaking and threatened to leave the studio!!! I don’t have that kind of restraint @thenanaaba had!" During the Loving Blackness workshop, participants will interrogate the centuries-old “alternative fact” of blackness as inherently criminal and otherwise pathological. Grounded in bell hooks’ argument that loving blackness can be political resistance, the workshop uses reading, writing, and dialogue-based activities to explore ideas about blackness and love in our political landscapes.
Participants will read short essays and images by Black thinkers and artists. They will respond to these works through writing exercises and through dialogue with other participants. To act upon this understanding of loving blackness, participants will then create projects that serve the purpose of loving blackness within their communities, culminating in a toolkit that considers what acts of courage look like in private settings.

CK Akonnor collapsed after Asamoah Gyan penalty miss at the 2010 World Cup - Kwabena Yeboah
Veteran sports journalist and the host of GTV sports programme, Sports Highlights has revealed that Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor collapsed when Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty awarded to Ghana against Uruguay in the dying minutes of the game at the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa.
In an interview with Benjamin Willie Graham on GTV Sports+ ‘Time With Our Captains’ programme, Kwabena Yeboah said during the game, his co-commentator, CK Akonnor had to be revived by some women in the media stand with water when Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty.
Continuing the narration he added that when CK Akunnor recovered, some of his comments were incoherent and unintelligent. He noted that it was funny, but he had to maintain his composure.
CK Akonnor on his part, confirmed the incident and explained that he was emotional because he thought Ghana had progressed.
Kwabena Yeboah added that the reason he was able to maintain his composure was that he had learnt from other commentators who break down as a result of their countries losing matches and implored other commentators to try as much as possible to be neutral when running commentaries. He recounted when he cried in the studio when Ghana lost to Cameroun in the CAN 2008 tournament.
The penalty situation happened when Ghana was awarded a penalty when Luiz Suarez hindered Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah’s goal bound header from entering the net by hitting the ball with his hand.
Asamoah "Babyjet" Gyan in turn missed the penalty that would have taken Ghana into the semi-final of the tournament in South Africa.
