developing as an academic is just sort of descending into a David Pumpkins-esque level of incomprehensibility about some topic to everyone around you—with every passing engagement things make more sense to you and less sense to the absolutely regular people in your life who have been cruelly subjected to knowing you, they have questions that you can only answer with more of what seems like nonsense to them and you just. continue like that.

#contemplated interjecting into my brother & stepfather's Christmas convo about sharpie dick drawings at sleepovers to talk about my research #but i would probably seem insane and it's taken long enough to gain rapport with those two I'm not ready to jeopardize it lol #following day at breakfast my mom says she's had trouble explaining what i do to people who ask and I'm just like #yeah....... that happens commonly to family of phd students lmfaoooooo #graduate school is hilarious actually
