Yeah i agree, i think the idea of the mons being assigned to you by birth is not... something i vibe with... but i also... still feeling wary about mentions to Tamers (if you know, you know and might take a while until i can really discuss stuff regarding it... yeah) -- i don't vibe much with certain... concepts in it either😔💧 Sorry.
About Mimi's line... That was also there since Adv'99 too! Because her line is what makes Sora realize she wanted to be herself and not anything else. And this is why Sora decides to not take part of the battles anymore, but this does not mean she cannot help with different roles (one of my favorite part in Adv'99 and 02 is that you don't need to be directly involved in the battle to help. And i like how Kizuna had it's cold opening have Koushiro assist Taichi, Hikari, Yamato and Takeru from his office instead. Sure, he was part of the latter battles in-movie, but he can just help them as their navigator-unit than being in-battle in person.
Some reminder to peeps reading this convo/post: Sora's meltdown in Adv'99 makes Yamato and Jou remind her that they were doing this world saving thing because they wanted to, and not because they were like fated or obliged to. And in 02 we have Jou comment to Iori that "We're called Chosen Children, but we are the ones who make the choices" when he explains that he went to help Gomamon because he wanted to, not because he was obliged to.
I like how Adv'99/02/Kizuna/02TB subverts (? i think that's the term) the "Chosen One" trope despite them being called "Chosen Children/Ones*" -- no one has been forced to be involved, you having a digimon/digivice does not mean you have to fight enemies and defend/save/protect the world. We got many examples of partnerships where the kid and mon weren't exactly involved in a big adventure with world saving purposes. Heck, i think most of the non-main characters in that universe are not the type of get in a battle, unless if it there's an emergency like in the worldwide eps in 02 or in its finale? or, in Wallace's case, if they're involved already with a battle/mystery.
(※ one of the DP staff replies to one of my posts about 02TB in their website had them use "Chosen Ones" instead of the usual EN term, "Digidestined", so i guess this is another alternative for translation of 選ばれし子供たち ? Or they just... didn't remember the overall western term...)
Maybe it's time to bring it down and just not think about it that much, because I'm kind of lost at this point.
It's just that, since partner Digimon are supposed to be like some sort of "embodiment of one's soul", I thought maybe they were born at the same time.
As for Mimi's speech, I thought it was more about "we don't need to perform our role in Digimon battles forever", kind of. Like sure they could keep being friends with their partners, and that's enough. But they don't have to carry the responsibility of saving the world and stuff throughout their entire lives.
