happy ultraman day! i finished up a fic i promised to a dear friend for today (because i swore i'd do something for it.) i'm proud of some parts of it! here's a snippet.
All good, man,” Fuma insists, “I was thinking I’d zip around the cosmos for a bit. Taiga, are you gonna be okay by yourself?”
Yes? No? What’s another few days without Titas and Fuma, if twelve years were Segmeger poison flowing on his being? Steady pitilessness?
Three days. Seventy-two hours. Four thousand, three hundred and twenty minutes. There’s a due date for his loneliness, and it’ll be over before he knows it! Besides, if the various centuries of journeys were to tell anything, Titas and Fuma could handle any storm’s attempts to weather them. But what about Taiga, himself?
This should be fine. Nothing could possibly be worse than Tregear.
Taiga answers, “Yeah, I should be.”

This never should have been released as a Blu-ray. It’s an upconverted mess. I should have just bought the DVD.

Should I watch Ultraman Cosmos?
hmmmm. see the thing is i am very attached to cosmos and its characters but it's not like, good? like it's way too long and a lot of its episodes are pretty uninteresting. and its Themes are handled kinda clumsy like. but the cast is fun and the movies are a lot of fun too and you do come away from it with a lot love for the characters. it's a show that i felt a lot more than one should just on a technical perspective, i guess?
so yeah.... if you want to, go ahead and try it out! it's definitely not the strongest early heisei ultra, but there is something special there.

In case you couldn’t tell from my consistent praise of everything that wasn’t a CGI model, I’m already fully in love with Ultraman Cosmos. It’s not often I go into a show with specific expectations of loving it, and ending up being completely right about loving it for all the reasons I thought I would... but yeah! I love it! There’s a few surprises such as Cosmos being a returning hero to Earth rather than something new, but overall this show is very up front about being a show that prioritises kindness and healing before anything else; and as such is a wonderful evolution of Ultraman and taking it in exactly the direction it should be -- and it’s certainly not hard to see the influence of that in later series like X, Geed and Z. There’s not much more to say; I loved episode 1 and I’m excited to see the other 64!

And, I just, I suppose what I’m trying to say is -- I think -- no, I know that--!“
PANEL FOUR: Hikari, shouting & now very embarrassed: “I... love you!!“
PANEL FIVE: Cosmos, smiling calmly, says, “Oh, I know.“
PANEL SIX: Hikari is in silent shock.
PANEL SEVEN: Cosmos, still smiling but a little more deadpan, adds: “... Ah, that was not the right way to put that, was it.”
End second page image description. ]

[ IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Third page of a three-page comic.
PANEL ONE: Hikari, looking very startled, says “You... you knew?“ and adds more quietly, “but I only figured it out last week...“ Cosmos reluctantly admits, “You’re not exactly hard to read...“ and adds quietly, “except to yourself, it seems.“
PANEL TWO: Hikari clears his throat and moves on, saying, “W-Well, anyway...“
PANEL THREE AND FOUR: Hikari once again grows more flustered over two panels, his words stretching over them both as he says, “If you don’t -- feel the same, we can just ignore it, and go on being friends, you know, so -- yeah you know what let’s just do that --“
PANEL FIVE: Cosmos kisses Hikari on the cheek, cutting him off.
PANEL SIX: Cosmos pulls back slightly, smiling as he says, “Don’t be silly. I love you, too.“ Hikari, stunned, says “... Oh.“
PANEL SEVEN: Hikari catches up to what’s going on, shouting “OH?!“ and “WAIT, WHAT, REALLY?“. Cosmos laughs, “I thought we’d been dating for months now, wow...“
End comic.

New information on the future of the Absolute Tartarus
I know I have already talked about this briefly in the group but upon further thinking, i realised that this decision has pretty far-reaching implications, especially when it comes to the current Multiverse as we know it. So I really want to dedicate a whole post to really discuss this specific development.
So for those that arent caught up yet, apparently Sakamoto has posted that AT and the Absolutian Race will (or in his words, 'may' but yeah we all know what he means) be a recurring villain for the ultra race in the future
Now note theres two BIG implications to what he said:
1. Absolute Tartarus
He says that AT will show up again, which likely means that he'll survive TAC (or at least, will be alive after)
So yeah, major spoiler from Sakamoto there
So we'll really see just how would AT weasel his way out of the ending of TAC, which i suspect will have something to do with Reibatos
Not to mention AT brought Reibatos to revive something in Cosmos' Universe which hasnt been explained yet (tho I suspect is likely Chaosroid Ultraman and this is actually prime opportunity to canonize Chaosroid U, T and S but im getting carried away here)
Not to mention that we have no idea on what hes trying to do in the first place, and yet he has eyes on the Plasma Spark, which is tied to a whole other age old meta plot
Definitely EXTREMELY intrigued to see whats the future of his character
2. The Absolutian Race
Now here's the bigger revelation
As we've AT's immense capability is absolutely (no pun intended) no joke, being able to amass big bads from different timelines and even time periods, at this pointz im wont even be surprised if he brings back the League of Darkness as well
Now imagine an entire race of him, all going against the Ultra race
And I can see where TsuPro is going with this, to create a whole new meta narrative of Ultras vs Absolutians and establishing the Absolutian race as THE powerful recurring nemesis of the Ultras
And im really hoping that this isnt exclusive to the M78 Ultras, but to all Ultras in the Multiverse as well, AND THIS is another INGENIOUS implication as Ultras of other universes encouter hostile Absolutians, theyll eventually come into contact with the M78 Ultras as the main resistance which consolidates different ultras series as well
Not to mention i can really see how other plots can be stemmed from this omg
And bruh, we have this as well as other meta plots ongoing like the Devil Splinters, Reiblood etc, at this point i really think TsuPro is insane enough (in a good way) to merge or combine even meta plots together
Cant wait to see more Absolutians and REALLY EXCITED to see what happens next with the franchise as this is really a HUGE step forward

I think this is what really got me to like Ultraman recently. A lot of Kamen Rider, especially Drive; really frustrated me with how deeply unsympathetic it was towards a lot of villains that really deserved the sympathy. Even when I really loved Drive there was always that discomfort at the back of my mind of how they treated the Roidmudes and how they didn't even try to find another solution. And now here's X and Cosmos going Kaiju Deserve Love Actually and even Geed gets to pet a Nubila
i feel like ultraman has always had a history of sympathy towards kaiju and the like yeah

Zero’s Character Development!?
Possible spoilers if you haven’t watched most of either his movies or his side stories.
I’ve discussed it on twitter, so I thought I’d throw it in here too, but basically I’ve observed Zero’s mannerisms as I skimmed through all the shows and movies he’s appeared and cameo’d in and I noticed that Zero does get some character development!  It’s kind of subtle and easy to miss, and probably most of his development would be seen through episodes of Ultraman Retsuden, but yeah despite still being hot-blooded and having a rather freewheeling and carefree attitude, over time he improves himself!
Here’s one of them:
Tumblr media
This is from the Zero/Mega Monster Battle side story “Ultraman Zero vs. Darclops Zero”, taking place some time after the Mega Monster Battle movie. When Leo appeared to rescue Zero, the latter called Leo by only his name. Okay. Nothing too big, right? It’s expected he’d call people by name-only basis, given his attitude and all.
Tumblr media
Now this is from Shin Ultraman Retsuden, a series of clip shows hosted by Zero which aired some time after Ultraman Saga, but definitely years after the side story. Notice what he calls Leo now. It’s Master Leo (レオ師匠/ Leo-shishou). It’s as if he greatly regards Leo as his teacher, and showing respect. And according to the Japanese wiki, he’s started calling Leo that around Ultraman Retsuden air time.
Now Leo isn’t the only one that Zero began to show his respect to!
Tumblr media
Once again looking at the Japanese wiki, it’s said that around the first few episodes of Ultraman Retsuden, Zero used to refer Ultraman King as Jiji (ジジイ), which is an informal (and most often rude) way of calling an elderly man or one’s grandfather, closest would be “old geezer”.
Tumblr media
Then around Shin Ultraman Retsuden, he starts calling King differently. He was going to say Jiisan (爺さん), same meaning, and still informal as heck but with the way he refers to him shows he’s showing a bit of respect towards him too. In other words, it’s a step up. Around this point, he refers to King either that or King no Jiisan (キングの爺さん) as he mentioned later in the Ultraman Ginga S movie.
Now looking back at the first Zero movie (Mega Monster Battle), I can see why Zero initially called them that and how that changed after returning to his home planet. Much of what’s going on during his exile is mostly guesswork from there, but if you take a close look at the movie, it shows he’s rather angry and bitter about it, and even throws rude insults at Leo, meaning Zero may view him as a nuisance than his teacher.
Tumblr media
Aside from that, there’s also Zero’s view on gaining power and how he should use it too.
Initially, Zero only wanted power for his personal gain, but that led to him getting exiled to another planet. Eventually he learned how to draw out his true strength after protecting Pigmon and redeemed himself. Over time however, it seemed he realized how dangerous it is to carry that much power probably after obtaining some from the Plasma Spark and then later Noa’s Ultimate Aegis. For that, Zero was careful about it, which soon leads to the first episode of Ultra Zero Fight where he gained the powers of Cosmos and Dyna after their temporary merger, where he admits that he was afraid of this new power he now carries.
Eventually he tries to put his doubts behind and believe in the power he was gifted with and use it to protect others.
Tumblr media
Maybe I’m reading way too deep on a character like Zero. But honestly I think it’s really neat to see this kid growing up, learning to respect others and even become respectable himself. Sure he’s still a bit rough around the edges, that’s part of who Zero is, but I can’t help but notice how much he’s matured over those years and over the number of appearances he’s made. The best I could describe it as Zero gradually getting over his teenage delinquent phase.
Seven would be so proud.

Jon’s Toku Thoughts: Top Um 5 Favorite Other Toku Characters (UltraMan, Metal Heroes, Etc...)Not from 2016
Yeah so I didn’t finish much for other Toku characters so the list is small.
5. Haruno Musashi-UltraMan Cosmos
Tumblr media
I didn’t finish Cosmos yet because I was following a subber that didn’t finish. Anyways I saw Cosmos in X and loved his description so I wanted to watch his series. I love that he compassionate and wanting to save the monsters. That’s just amazing in my opinion and makes him such an amazing character.
4. Retsu Ichijouji-Space Sheriff Gavan
Tumblr media
Retsu was pretty cool in the first half of Space Sheriff Gavan that I watched. He was badass and a great hero. I enjoyed him though he’ll probably be higher on 2017′s list because I watched his better character episodes this year.
3. UltraSeven 21 (UltraMan Neos)
Tumblr media
UltraSeven 21 was completely awesome. Though I’ll be honest I don’t remember much besides him helping Kagura out and helping him get his powers. He kicked ass though.
2. Kagura Genki-UltraMan Neos
Tumblr media
Kagura was full of heart and a great main character. I remember loving him and how agile he was as Neos. He helped make the show great.
1. Shin Hayata-UltraMan
Tumblr media
Shin Hayata was absolutely a delight to watch. I enjoyed him as the original UltraMan. He sure didn’t say much but he was fun and always helped save the day.

Last night I went to see the Ginga S/X Ultraman double featur, but I got home super exhausted and didn't get a chance to post my thoughts on the movies. So here we go: There was only one guy in the theater besides me. He was an old dude that was at the One Piece showing as well. He came in during the previews and before that I was honestly super depressed about being the only one there and nearly cried. Anyway, the movies themselves... I don't mind dubs in the vast majority of cases but there were a few cringy decisions for these dubs. They were too worried about matching the actors' mouth movements and sometimes it felt like the kind of stuff people joke about with dubs of live action movies from Japan. The voice actors for the main characters did fine, but the side characters were almost unbearable at times, particularly the archaeologist in the X movie... who kept... pausing... like this... after... every few... words... The Ginga S movie did MUCH better with the voice cast, with the worst of it being Mana's weird Australian(?) accent. The action in both movies was great, particularly Ginga S. Probably because they had a LOT more Ultramen and Kaijus to work with. It probably hurt X that they relied a lot more heavily on recurring Kaiju while Ginga S used a lot more boss-type kaiju, so even the ones that I'd seen in the past week of marathoning the show were fun to see. Though I will admit that when Dark Lugiel showed up, I /really/ wanted Ginga to make some kind of "are you kidding me" reference to how often he's fought him. The stories themselves were more disparate quality-wise. Ginga S had actual villains and a more interesting plot, while X just had an idiot human that accidentally woke up an ancient kaiju. Ginga S also made much better use of returning Ultramen, with Cosmos's actor returning and Zero actually being part of the plot. Meanwhile in X... Tiga and the original Ultraman didn't even speak. Which is especially strange since Ginga, Victory, and Zero also had cameos in the X movie with about one or two lines each. Last thing I'll touch on is the new forms introduced. They're kind of opposites of each other. X had a REALLY cool concept for his transformation device (I'm just gonna call them morphers for brevity) in that he used a combination of Tiga's and Ultraman's morphers fused together into a new thing, however the new form itself was kinda boring. On the other hand, Ginga and Victory had an AWESOME new suit in their combined form, while the new morpher used to achieve it was basically a re-deco of Ginga's upgrade morpher from the show. I was a bit confused why X was shown before Ginga S since that's out of order, but in hindsight it was a smart move since Ginga S was a MUCH better movie. So yeah, I had fun. I just hope the poor turn out doesn't hurt the chances of more toku movies coming to this theater...

I still find it really interesting, and also kinda funny, that Neos was intended to be Heisei revival of Ultraman, before TV execs rejected it due to being too similar to the Showa shows, which was what made Tsupro go back to the drawing board and create Tiga. Then Neos got brought back years later literally to fill air time between Gaia and Cosmos.
yeah lol

When I decided to watch Ultraman Cosmos, I had a few reasons in mind. To begin with, obviously, it was one of the most intriguing ones to me as infamously being the first Ultra series to really focus on Kaiju protection -- as someone enamoured with how New Gen series handled the concept I was interested to see how that might have started. It’s also the longest Ultra series, so as someone who wants to watch all of them some day and had already seen Kamen Rider and Goranger... yeah, might as well knock it out right there!
But one big reason is one that wouldn’t show up until post-series. There’s a certain Ultra that’s shown up for the first time in decades in recent media, one that... kinda encroaches a lot on my headspace between both their portrayal there and interviews stating the very clear intent of what they are supposed to be. So while I won’t be liveblogging this as much because it’s a movie, I’m really interested and really excited for this one. Ultraman Cosmos 2: The Blue Planet!

think the most annoying things about zero’s super forms is how they like. Get used later without the context that made them important and just make them mundane.
Shining Ultraman Zero is probably the biggest example of this. Zero Fight may not have resonated with me as much as it did others, but I get the strong emotional pull of it -- it’s the absolute apex of his dedication and love for his friends; his statement of who he is and how far he’s come; how he’s everything Belial never could be. Even the odd name, ‘Shining Ultraman, is perfect for it - it’s the embodiment of how he’s become Ultraman. And so strong and mighty is this power that it can turn back time to save his friends, so powerful a force that he forgets about it after using it to literally reverse the deaths of said friends.
But later he just, y’know, fuckin uses it like it’s just another thing in his toolbox and he can just reverse time for whatever the fuck he wants. Like yeah sure only by a few minutes but fucking hell the actual disparity here between “the expression of his willpower and bonds to do the impossible” and “oh this is how he gets out of bullton” is so annoying
Ultimate Zero also suffers from this. It’s a similar “expression of bonds” power-up but he literally just uses it as his taxi as if it was nothing. It’s a miracle he doesn’t like, pull Cosmos and Dyna out of the aether to become Saga in half his appearances

Also, I was able to watch some Ultraman X over Crunchyroll, since that was my only legal method of watching a tokusatsu show that wasn't Power Rangers. I liked X well enough, will probably watch again, but maybe you could direct me to a few other seasons.
Oh boy and this is even harder than recommending Kamen Rider seasons. I’ve watched far less Ultraman by comparison (KR I’ve seen… literally everything in the Heisei period and a handful of Showa), but I’ve at least LIKED every single season I’ve watched. The majority of them I’ve LOVED.
That being said, getting into Ultraman is also a little harder, because unlike Kamen Rider’s “one and done (minus cameos)” approach to seasons, Ultraman’s got more of a ‘floating continuity’ thing going on. Is this season canon to that season? The answer is almost always: Yeah, kinda, just ignore anything that doesn’t fit because we’re not going to explain it! … Which sounds kind of bad, but honestly, if you’re willing to nod along with any references to things you haven’t seen yet and accept that ‘nothing from previous seasons is relevant here until proven otherwise’, Ultraman’s a show with a hell of a lot of heart and a hell of a lot of fun.
As for seasons I’d recommend, anything that’s post-Ginga S is considered “New Generations” Ultraman, and I can heartily recommend any of that. (That’s X, Orb, Geed, R/B, and Taiga, currently – Orb and Geed are on Crunchyroll too! Orb’s the one I just “liked” more than “loved”, but that says more about the quality of everything ELSE than the quality of Orb.) Ginga and Ginga S are a WILD ride and I don’t not recommend them, but they were made on a budget of about 5 dollars and it shows, haha.
For older seasons I’ve watched, Mebius is good but heavily references older shows (it explains everything well, but if that’s not your jam, maybe watch other stuff first), and Cosmos is possibly my FAVORITE ultraman but he’s rarely relevant to anything else (HE BEFRIENDS THE GIANT MONSTERS. THE KINDEST OF ULTRAMEN). These are both currently available on TOKUHD, which is subscription-based, though Mill Creek Entertainment is working on releasing Ultraman BluRays in the US, so those should be available… eventually. They’re working on it. Sigh.
Oh, and one last honorary mention, only “honorary” because it’s a pain to track him all down: Ultraman Zero. I love Zero dearly. He’s an incredibly overpowered teen, but he’s likeable and has good friends and tends to react to his constant stream of new power-ups with “oh god, stop, I could theoretically kill god now AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THAT. STOP.” … However. His first appearance, and his next few major appearances before Geed, are all movies or DVD specials. If you can track down his string of movies, I recommend about half of them. (Mega Monster Battle Ultra Galaxy Legends is the starting point and just “okay”, Revenge of Belial is next and AMAZING, then Killer the Beatstar has great character development but horrible fight choreography, then Ultraman Saga which is honestly pretty bad but gives Zero *TWO* other Ultramen’s powers, and finally Ultra Fight Zero, which is my second-favorite after Revenge of Belial. Phew!)
SO uh yeah! Good luck, hopefully all of this will become easier to find as Mill Creek puts out those BluRays – I’ve got the Orb, Geed, UltraQ and Ultraseven ones myself, and though I’ve only cracked into the Orb one so far (to share it with some friends), I can say they seem pretty quality, especially for about $25 per set, and it’s lovely to see Ultras in HD. 👍hope this helps!

Just asking but, if Taro Ultra-Overlapped with all the Ultras that Appeared in the Ultraman Ginga Movie. Or with all the New Generation Ultras. Then what would he get from doing that and how powerful would he get?
Hi!
Let’s first refresh ourselves with who are the Ultras we are looking at here and at the same time, estimate their power levels
Ultraman Tiga: Base L1, Max L2
Ultraman Dyna: Base L1, Max L2 (Revolium Wave hax ability)
Ultraman Gaia: Base L6, Max L6 (Cause unknown power difference btw L6 and L7)
Ultraman Cosmos: Base L1, Max L4
Ultraman Nexus: Base L1, Max L10
Ultraman Max: Base L1, Max L2 (Again, not sure if I want to put him on L6 cause of the Max Galaxy)
Ultraman Mebius: Base L1, Max L2
Ultraman Zero: Base L1, Max L5
Ultraman Ginga: Base L6, Max L6
Ultraman Victory: Base L6, Max L6
Ultraman X: Base L1, Max L5
Ultraman Orb: Base L1, Max L5
Ultraman Geed: Base L1, Max L5
Ultraman R/B/G: Base L1, Max L5 (Gruebe)
Ultraman Taiga: Base L1, Max L4 (TS is at L3 but cause of Quattro Squad Blaster, ill put him at L4 more or less)
Ultraman Titus: Base L2
Ultraman Fuma: Base L2
Ultraman Taro: Base L7
Ok so lets take the first scenario with Taro Ultra Overlapping with the 10 Ultras in the Ginga S Movie
Well, short answer, L10 confirmed
Why?
Noa’s literally there and he’s already L10, the rest of the Ultras aren’t even significant enough to consider here
Do note that we’re treading in literally ‘out-there’ territory cause L10 capabilities are very vague, not to mention its a fusion
The resultant fusion would have all the hax abiltiies from Noa, Gaia, Agul and Dyna
Not to mention with gears such as the King Bracelet, Max Galaxy, UlTrans etc, perhaps they would fuse and become his armor
Also have access to the Geed Riser which basically grants him access to the New Generation Alpha and Beta Capsules so some hints of X and Orb’s powers as well
Perhaps at this point, he’ll be able to achieve his Glitter Form on the fly
For New Gen, for simplicity’s sake let’s take all New Gen at their max forms and see how the they stack up
As broken down in my previous posts, I estimate Ginga and Victory to be around Ultra Brother Level, so let’s take GV and highball him to Taro’s level cause come on, a fusion of two Ultra Brother level Ultras should be able to be on par with Taro
EXBSA at least L4 cause its officially stated to be above even the Ultimate Aegis
But considering that it was also stated to be above Hybrid Armor which is also above Ultimate Aegis, let’s also highball him to L5
OT solid L5, maybe even L6 so let’s highball him to maybe Jack or sth
UF standard L5
Gruebe, aside from his strength, standard L5
TS L4
Titus L2, L3 if u just look at his strength stat
Fuma L2, L3 if u just look at his speed stat
In short, u have two L7, four L5, one L4, two L3
Now compare it to Super Taro which consisted of one L7 and five L6
And Mebius Infinity which consisted of one L7, five L6 and one L2
Tbh if u ask me, my money is the resultant fusion being weaker than Super Taro
Cause you’re looking at a base of Two Taros, which covers around 4 Ultra Brothers, so we’re looking at 3 Ultra Brothers in excess
And I don't think the remaining 3 Ultra Brother Level slots can be adequately supplemented by four L5s, one L4 and two L3s
So yeah in this case, Taro would also be L10, but still weaker than the previous hypothetical resultant fusion of the previous scenario
As for what the resultant fusion can do?
Since this is really a very vague scenario ill just compare it to the previous fusion, he’ll definitely not be able to perform as much hax abilities as the former
Has access to UlTrans, Cyber Armor (Be able to digitized beings and equip their gears or armors on the spot)
Able to use Ultra Cards and Capsules using the Orb Ring and Geed Riser
Able to dish out elemental attacks cause of Gruebe, Orb and Fuma
Since he would also have access to the Taiga Spark, he can attain higher forms and create different weapons
So sure he’ll have the ability to grow even stronger all the gimmicks, but can it compare to the sheer power of Super Taro?
Mebius Infinity is kind of just a little step up from Super Taro only cause Mebius is just an L2
So yeah, its really hard to say cause there’s literally so many things both could do but so little we could know essentially cause we’re messing with L10 stuff
Thanks for the question!
