Absolutely no one aske for this but tough cookies. Friday's Child is a Georgette Heyer regency romance where the main plot is Charming Idiot Sherry gets rebuffed by Diamond of the Season for Reasons, resolves to marry the next woman he sees, who Happens to be his childhood friend Hero. They are Stupid and Adorable and at some point his friends (who collectively have one braincell, usually stored in someone's snuff box) mention how nice it is that he Loves His Wife. To which Sherry has a meltdown because FUCK I LOVE HER. ("did Sherry not know??" "NO I DIDNT KNOW WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME")
So, noble idiot with an equally chaotic friend group suddenly marries his childhood best friend who is almost immediately adopted by said friend group. You see the similarities right?
Although it would be a mashup between Friday's Child and Cotillion (my favorite I’ve talked about already...somewhere) because that one is fake engagement instead of convenient marriage and I feel like Zuko wouldn't need to jump straight to marriage?
Anyways. It's three years post war, the political stuff is finally slowing down to ‘ugh’ instead of ‘i swear I'm going to LET the next assassin get me’, and the council or the sages or somebody starts pressuring/hinting that Zuko should, if not get married, at the very least start looking.
Nothing says stability like a royal wedding amirite?
So Zuko goes from “thanks but I’m too busy for Romance” to being thrown headfirst into the marriage market, his friends are of no help at all, and when he finally decides to seriously court this lovely girl his entire council approves of, he thinks its a pretty good decision. (Except for when his friends and bodyguards and entire staff start side eyeing him because that martyr-y shit isn’t getting any cuter). But they genuinely get along, he enjoys spending time with her and she can handle court drama reasonably well. But when he decides to propose and visits her, she asks him advice on the girl she wants to court (bisexual solidarity can i get a yeaaaaah?!).
Which. Ok. Fine, he likes her more as a friend anyways, but still. Now he's got to start over! And the council is going to be horrible about it! He's just going to ask the next eligible person he meets, fuck it.
And ooop, he walks into a nice little tea house on the way home from his almost-ex’s (she needs a name. Suzuki?) estate, lo and behold Mai is there too!
This is perfect.
I mean, yeah, he and Mai agreed after the war that neither of them are in a healthy or stable enough place to truly start a relationship again, especially since they want to do this right and really care for each other, and they’ve only really exchanged letters since then, and he’s only nominally sure she’s single, but still! Mai!! He likes Mai! Mai is great! (Zuko you oblivious dumbass)
So they catch up and when she wants to know why he looks like his turtleduck just ate his theatre scrolls, he basically pours this whole problem into her lap and well. she’s bored anyways, her parents have been sniffing around matchmakers again, she hasn’t been to the capital in a hot minute and her favorite aunt lives there. fuck it why not.
Being fake engaged to the fire lord is bound to be entertaining right?
Anyways there’s at least one scene where assassins break in and Zuko is discussing it in the hall with his guards, getting irritated because his hair is messy and starts braiding it back when Mai shows up to find out whats going on and just. Casually slides over to finish his braid and the guards are all oh?? OHHH????
And a scene where they spar together because they’re both very dangerous people.
And Mai definitely figures out she’s in love with him first. She’s just letting him get there on his own.
And I’m only 75% sure this scene happens in FC, but Mai absolutely forces some stuffy noble to acknowledge his son’s marriage to somone of ‘lesser birth’ and the subsequent baby.
And the council loves her, and his friends love her, and his staff loves her, and Zuko is so happy because yes! Mai is amazing! Everyone should love - oh. Oh No.
