Mun Plays Kingdom Hearts 3
Picking up where I left off, I went to Monsteropolis, the world of Monsters Inc. Funnily enough, I haven’t seen that movie in years and didn’t bother touching the prequel. Weird thing, Monster Sora looks strangely cute. I’m no filthy tetraphilia (But I got a friend who would just on any hellspawn monster) but I’ll admit that Monster Sora looks kinda cute. And I couldn’t help but notice two things; Sully seems to sound a little different and I swear they simply reused Boo’s voice lines from the movie. The way she says “Kitty” and “Mike Wazowski” not only sound exactly alike she time she says them, but the sound exactly like how they were said in the movie.
I was surprised to see Randal back and causing trouble and honestly, it was kind of a present surprise. Though he seemed less threatening than in the movie, but whatever. Against the boss, it took me a while to figure a few things out and nearly lost a few times before I eventually managed to win. After that, I knew Vanitas was going to be there, but the stuff he pulls against Sora, Donald, and Goofy was actually quite impressive. And it was nice to see Sully pull what TV Tropes calls a “Big Damn Heroes” moment. Picking Vanitas up, tossing him in a door, tossing that door into another door, tossing that into another door, and tossing that into yet another door before shredding that door. And now, Sora knows about Vanitas, the boy whose heart went to his in order to heal all the way back in Birth by Sleep.
After that, I watched the following cutscene, explaining most of what I already know, as well as a third thing; Sora had a third heart inside him. Roxas and Ventus were two, leading me to assume that the third heart is Xion. I also went straight to Twilight Town so I could go the the Hundred Acre Woods. I knew Lumpy was going to be present, but I still couldn’t help but smile when I saw him meet Sora. The mini-games present were nice and kinda reminded me of Blossom Blast Saga (despite never playing the game).
Once I finished the mini-games and left the Hundred Acre Woods, imagine my joy when I saw the next cutscene that had my waifu, Aqua~! But she seemed... strangely cocky... Claiming to not need her keyblade to defeat Ansem and his Guardian Heartless. Granted, she managed to get a few hits in, but was defeated. This actually lines up with the first part of my theory about what happens to Aqua, found here. Keep in mind this was posted quite a few months before KH3 was released.
Next up was Arendelle, the world of Frozen. When Sora and the others got ambushed by Larxene, I was surprised to see that they were sent to an entire maze, seemingly in an entirely different pocket dimension. I eventually managed to reach the end, but decided to explore. And for my curiosity, I stumbled across a room full of lady-like Heartless that I took to calling “Milady”. Despite my best efforts, I was overwhelmed and defeated, getting my very first game over. Even the Kupo Coin couldn’t help me. So I just left with intentions to try again later.
Following after Elsa, I couldn’t help but grin when I saw them actually mimic the famous Let it Go scene from the movie. Like, GOD!! If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this was from the actual movie itself! Every step, evey facial expression, EVERY LITTLE THING looked like it was out of the movie! Of course, not counting the shots with Sora, Donald, and Goofy. In fact, I’m practically convinced they actually used the clip from Disney’s archives, character animations and how the structures moved, and put them into the game. I even tried to look at her shoulder to see if her hair clipped through her shoulder when she let her hair down, just like in the movie. I couldn’t tell, but I think her hair did clip through her shoulder.
But enough of that. While finding Olaf’s body parts, I kinda found myself getting lost a few times, unsure of where to go. The person who hid his middle section in the area where it is... just mean. Though I found the Do You Wanna Build a Snowman scene to be kinda... unneeded. And the sound mixing was really poor. Child!Anna and Adult!Anna had the same volume, making it hard to follow either. I think muting Child!Anna slightly would help, since what Adult!Anna says is much more important. I later fought Marshmallow and I got him low, but I lost when he got angry and started slashing at Sora. Dodge-rolling didn’t help me and I got combo’d to death. So when I fought him again, I played more patiently and instead blocked when I could. Eventually, I managed to win.
After the fight, I continued down the mountain like normal, nothing major, though I found myself getting ready for a fight when Marshmallow showed up again, fearing another fight, only to find him become an ally. He proved really helpful against the Horsemen Heartless, who I kinda struggled with prior.
I’ve also come to realize something when I reached Arendelle; they skipped over major important details and just kinda assumed you saw the movie. I mean, yeah, I saw the movie, but someone hasn’t, they’d be confused. They’d be wondering stuff like ”Where did Elsa’s magic come from?” or “Who is Hans?” or “How did Hans manage to capture Elsa?”. So... yeah.
The Timberwolf Heartless wasn’t too difficult to defeat, especially since I had Marshmallow with me. And Sora’s aerial attacks really helped move the fight along. But it did take a while. After that, the cutscene where the trio return to Yen Sid’s tower played. No doubt Sora’s instinctive desire to go and help Aqua stems from Ven’s heart, someone willing to do anything for the sake of his best friends. But still... Power of Waking... I wonder what that’s supposed to be... Well, no matter.
After that was the Pirates of the Caribbean world and I gotta say, I’m loving the character designs in this game! First, whomever voiced Jack in this game is way better than James Arnold Taylor from KH2. JAT, I love ya man (especially since you voice Tidus) but you’re no Johnny Depp dead ringer. This new guy sounds almost exactly like Johnny Depp. When I had to chase down the ship, I basically ignored all the Heartless I encountered until I reached the ship. And in the cutscene after, where the Black Pearl reaches the shore, again, it felt like it was directly out of the movie. The human characters are practically perfect dead ringers for the actual people. No matter how many times I see that scene, it doesn’t stop looking good.
I had a bit of fun with sailing, taking to it like a duck to water and the giant flying Heartless wasn’t difficult by any means, but it was long. And swimming on the Huddles Island was neat, though it took some getting used to.
AND THING IS! About the race with Luxord, I struggled the first time. I managed to do well at first, but before long, I got knocked so far off coarse that I couldn’t recover. For the second time, I nearly won, but for some reason, I couldn’t go further. It said I could go no further when I was facing the finish line. I bounded off the finish line and LOST! You have no idea how pissed I was! But for the third time, I pretty much won with ease. Granted, there was still some difficulty, but no major issues. And the ship battle was also pretty easy and rather fun. I didn’t run into any major issues. And seeing the flashback with Jack and the British Captain was cool, since it allowed me to get a close up of the faces of the characters. You could actually see the skin textures that look like actual skin! And you can see the individual strands of hair on their eyebrows!
When I reached Port Royal, I simply explored and found all 300 White Crabs and watched the following cutscene. It was a shame they couldn’t get Davy Jones’ extra appendages to act like how they did in the movie, squirming every which way, but oh well. And I’m sure they got a different voice actor, which is also fine. I’m also come to notice they also managed to get Johnny Depp/Jack Sparrow’s twitching lip-thing spot on. It’s like they studied these Disney movies intensively and mimicked pretty much everything they could. I then saved at the save point and turned off the game, since it was getting rather late.
