I'm on my sexcapade right now but I can't stop thinking bout this book!
This book that I could have loved with all my heart and soul!
Okay, listen. Premise wise, I FUCKING LOVED IT. Give me a badass motherfucker bitch: Fang Runin (yeah, C. Her fam name is Fang). Give me Asia—specifically Japanese—myths and legends and politics: Gods/Goddesses living among us, Phoenix and dragon and viper, etc. Etc.. YOU GOT ME HOOKED OKAY!
Oh, wait. SPOILER ALERT!!! BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP!!!
Rin was hardworking and ruthless in part one. Like, she punched a spoiled, pretty fuckboi for talking shit bout her teacher. And she always gave this fucked up strategy during their war simulation in class (she literally said let the kids die with the enemy we're at war), and, yall, she fucking removed her womb so her period didn't get in her way to attend classes! BAMF
Then in Part two-three, she has been reduced to a scaredy cat. I understand she was scared to fight in war forreal. But even without her ruthlessness, she was proven so many times to be a bleeding good fighter in their class! And suddenly she was in love with this cool senpai with red eyes (if this aint Itachi) when she said she wanna do her best to impress him like he was an older brother. Then suddenly she was in love???? Like??? Sorry to burst your bubble but you could still feel vengeful and protective of someone without being in love with that someone!! Duh!!!
Suddenly she just stupidly followed his stupid ass decisions! I'm just! So!! Fucking!!! Pissed!!!!
I feel like their dynamic could be executed better. There was no build up or whatsoever (she admitted she scared and hated him at one point), and the politics were kinda simplified in this part of the book (which is kinda a bummer for me cause it was the main foundation of this book!!)
And the confrontation between the shaman that kept her from the Phoenix inside of her (imagine Naruto and Kyubi) and the Chaghan kid was very anti-climatic?? Underwhelmingly so??
So many opportunites for big scene but it was all glossed over!!!
To be completely honest, I'm disappointed with myself for not liking this book. Fucking enjoyed the first part. Then after she joined the Cike, her character just fell flat. I hated that she didn't even have her stubborness, her hardworkingness, in her. At all.
For those of you whom enjoyed this, I applaud you. I'm genuinely so fucking glad and happy for you.
But alas, didn't work for me.
Ps: still gonna read the second book tho cause I wanna know what the fuck happen to Nezha (THE ONLY CHARACTER THAT FUCKING DEVELOPED).
