Leslie Cheung: My relationship with Faye Wong is very special (2001)
Leslie Cheung interview during Japanese promotion of Okinawa Rendez-vous
- excerpts -
Why did you take on "Okinawa Rendez-vous"? Tell me about shooting in Okinawa.
Gordon (Chan) and I made a movie a few years ago where we also collaborated with Tony (Leung Ka-fai) called "The Long and Winding Road". It's not an action movie. Although Gordon is famous for making action movies, sometimes he also makes films about everyday people in Hong Kong which is exciting to shoot. Because we had a very pleasant experience last time, he approached me and talked about this film. I felt pleased, so I took the film. At the same time, another reason is Faye Wong, who didn’t like acting very much and only made “Chungking Express” with Wong Kar Wai and Wai Jai (Tony Leung) a few years ago, but never acted again. Gordon looked for her, but she specified that she wanted to work with me. For this collaboration, I also thought it was good to see what sparks can be produced with her.
This is the first time I went to Okinawa to make a movie. It can be said that it was lucky and unlucky because it was the rainy season at that time. Didn't see the sun too much. Gordon told us that this is a travel-feel movie. Later, I found out that this statement really came to fruition. We seemed to travel more than we filmed and the actor who stayed in Okinawa for the longest time was me. Faye went to do concerts for a while; Tony went to the UK to shoot commercials, so I spent a lot of time shopping and swimming in Okinawa.
Friends who have seen this movie will find that my relationship with Faye Wong is very special because she is definitely a female star who does not want others to "grip" (contact) her. So if the director wants to shoot a kiss, it's impossible. To express a feeling of love, but cannot kiss, Gordon could shoot it.
Overall, we were very happy to shoot in Okinawa. It was nice to get along with several Japanese actors, like Masaya Kato (Kato Yaya) and another Japanese actress, Higuchi Asuka, etc. Everyone seemed like brothers and sisters, playing hard but working at the same time.
Which scenes do you particularly like?
I think the scene at the top of the mountain was a lot of fun. I rarely play such a role. For example: I want to hold money, but I can’t hold it. I lose my temper at Masaya, and then there is a person who protects me, Gu Dechao, I think those scenes are fun.
Another scene I felt was good was on the beach when I saw Faye Wong. Although I like her so much, but she... and then there is a jukebox, I specially ordered a song to listen to and began to approach her slowly... I think that scene was good.
Please tell me about the two partners in the film, Faye Wong and Tony Leung Ka-fai. How were their performances?
Faye Wong is a good girl. At first, after "Chungking Express", I thought she didn't know what she was doing. Because Christopher Doyle once mentioned to me that her mark positions were always wrong but when I filmed with her, I realized that this was not the case. I think, after all, that movie was already 6 years ago. I think she is competent in this movie. At the same time, I think filming with some non-professional actors is sometimes fun. Because we will unwittingly use our own experience to understand each other, sometimes we will make something special. However, I can say that Faye Wong is very, very attractive on screen.
Tony Leung Ka-fai is a person who takes good care of all the people around him. I think his personality sometimes resembles a woman. He likes to play with a group of people and likes to invite people to eat. Working with him every day is like having a party. He is definitely a comedy character, so we are very happy every day; at the same time he plays very well!

Picked up my copy of the Othello manga -- nothing to do with the Shakespeare play, it's named after the board game, where the pieces flip between white and black -- the other day, and ended up binge-rereading the whole series.
It's about the shy, cosplay-otaku, frequently-bullied Yaya, who shares a body with the brash, confident, protective Nana. They are super cute and I love them so much. (I finally noticed that the people-pleasing headmate is "yeah, yeah" while the boundary-setter is "nah, nah." And of course, when Yaya is letting herself express her secret goth-lolita glam-rock interests, she goes by "me, me.")
When the series opens, Yaya is barely even starting to notice she has blackouts, while Nana thinks of herself as just "existing for stress relief," not a person who gets to pursue her own interests and hobbies outside of protecting Yaya.
By the end, though? Nana finds a hobby she loves, Yaya starts to stand up for herself, and the pair finally have a heart-to-heart headspace conversation where they decide "let's live together from here on out!"
