NEW ⬆️️ “In 1924 she heard about an expedition to study tropical insects. In those days, women scientists and explorers were rare. People thought it wasn’t safe. Women should stay at home. But Evelyn went anyway.” And she went on to complete eight(!) solo expeditions to the South Pacific, collecting over 70,000 specimens that are now a part of the collections at the Natural History Museum in London.
I hadn't heard of trailblazer Evelyn Cheesman until we happened upon Evelyn the Adventurous Entomologist. Written by Christine Evans and beautifully illustrated by Yasmin Imamura, this picture book shares an empowering message: Follow your passions. Go anyway.

This morning I took photos of the monarch butterfly caterpillars on the Asclepias tuberosa, butterfly weed. There are quite a few more than included in the post. The bush is active with the caterpillars and the adult butterflies. I sent seeds to my grandchildren who are studying plants in school . This is their first year of homeschooling, we're so excited for them! At this time we recommend two books in the subject of entomology. The 1st is Evelyn the Adventurous Entomologist:. The True Story of a World Traveling Bug Hunter by Christine Evans, illustrator Yasmin Imamura. Booklist called it "A lively introduction to Chessman and her scientific career.". The 2nd is Buzzing with Questions:The Inquisitive Mind of Charles Henry Turner . The Janice N. Harrington, and illustrator Theodore Taylor III "capture the life of this scientist and educator, highlighting his unstoppable curiosity and his passion for insects and biology". Pollinators need our help. If you would like seeds from these native plants contact us to begin your own native plant garden. Native plants are indigenous to a specific region and support the wildlife in the area. They support our beneficial insects. We will include a information and activity sheets along with the seeds for a minimal cost. #butterflies #caterpillar #monarchbutterfly #monarchcaterpillar #butterflyweed #nativeplants #homeschool #homeschoolingmom #homeschoolfamily #farmlife #homestead #homesteadfarm #pollinators #pollinatorgarden #entomology #entomologist #science #stemeducation #steameducation #biology #school #education #womenscientists #blackscientists #adventures #farmersofcolor #veteranfarmers
