Yashahime - Takashi Shiina Blog Translation : Shonen Sunday S January 2022 [Part 2]
11/29/2021
The early lives of the three princesses as depicted in the original work, the anime, have a fantasy flavor and an awareness of “fairy tales”. Towa-chan and Setsuna-chan “grew up just the two of them in a forest protected by a barrier, and the subordinate of an evil witch attacked their paradise”, which is very romantic. Meanwhile, in the comicalization I tried to create an image of the personal tragedy of kids whose parents were Sengoku warriors. Using the scene from the previous chapter where they’re transported in an ox carriage, it’s simplified, and I thought an image of “war” was necessary.
The idea “to select mu onna as android wet nurses” came from depicting “the reliability of the serious Sesshomaru-sama in a gorgeous mansion modeled after the Rokujouin mansion of ‘Genji Monogatari’ in a casual way”, and the story came together as “youkai are sometimes frightening and different beings than humans, but regarding the Yashahime they are friends and family”.
The imps/little onis who are together with the mu onna are a yokai called kanashibari, and originally (1) appeared as tormentors of (Inuyasha’s) mother played by the mu onna in order to trick Inuyasha by Lord Sesshomaru. I love them so much, their eyebrows and eyes, their body shape, their clothes, everything about them is just too much for me. They’re creepy-cute. Therefore, when I had the mu onna appear again, the circumstances are that I wanted them to be together (with the princesses) by all means, so they were called out. I did the setting as adding to the atmosphere where such things hang around as a demon dressed as a court lady, and it was like “Since we worked with Lord Sesshomaru before, we have often worked with him on the same spot again”... Yeah, exactly that.
I tried to draw Konton-san, who has shaved his beard and changed his eyes (when compared to the anime) after a meeting with Takahashi Rumiko-sensei, where the topic that it might be interesting to increase the level of beauty of enemy characters in Shiina's version was brought up… Well, it was like “In Shiina’s universe is that how it is? Lol” (laugh). In addition, I also let my personal desire to draw a “cool Jaken-sama” explode. Considering the fact that he was so scared of the band of the seven, he doesn't seem to be that strong against the storyboard mid-boss level, let alone the small fry (laugh), but I plan to have a more detailed account of what happened here later on. For now, I'd like to say that he did his best to protect the children, and I'd like you to record the charming voice of Cho-san, who plays Jaken in the anime, in the style of Gilboa-san from ‘Gundam UC’: “Take care of Tikva... Take care of my family... (Boom)".
Needless to say, Towa-chan's narration at the end contains my thoughts on the much-loved masterpiece "Inuyasha" and "Yashahime". When they start running in the style of an anime opening, I think it would be more exciting if you could play the theme song of the first half of the first season, 'New Era', in your brain. I made it with that in mind. Like “Let's run, let's take you to the promised place (2)" (laugh).
The image of Rin-sama (formerly Rin-chan), who is sealed in the epilogue, was changed to a more old-fashioned single hakama (hitoegakama) and thin silk (but for various reasons it's not as sheer as the original) because I felt that a properly dressed lintel would look like an Edo period samurai wife, but the rest of the story follows the original.
I think it's a statement of intent that “the story is the same as the anime as a general framework”, but as I've said many times before, the extent to what is considered a "general framework" will differ from person to person, and I'll be rearranging various parts including character situations and motivations, so it's not the same as the original anime, but the world line is surprisingly very close to it. I think I've managed to create a good balance and distance between the two versions, so please enjoy what I've made of the original work and the way I've rearranged it.
So, up to this point, this is the prologue and departure arc. The first volume containing these three chapters is scheduled to be released around January 18th and it will have a gorgeous specification with color pages, so be sure to buy it, please. The fourth chapter, which begins a new development in the next issue, takes place in the village of the exterminators led by the grown-up Kohaku-kun. I’m also preparing a surprise unique to the manga worldline, and I’m currently working hard on writing the story, so please wait for it.

My 2023 Anime Watchlist
Anime (and related media) I've watched this year
Tokyo Mew Mew New Season 2 (2023)
Second (and final?) season of the Tokyo Mew Mew reboot! Always here for some good magical girls! I never finished watching the original series, so it was nice to see how the story goes. I wouldn't call it amazing, but it's a cool series. I wish they would make a third season for the A La Mode arc which came out later, but it seems they might be ending it here, Idk (I've never read the manga either)...
Subs since there's no dub.
Saint Seiya: The Beginning a.k.a. Knights of the Zodiac (2023)
Live-action movie adaption. Would I watch more if they do it? Yeah. Was it good? Not really... I'm not saying it's horrible, but eh, it was weak. The absence of 3 out of 5 boys is definetely felt. I mean, I didn't expect much of it, so it's not like I was dissappointed! ^^' I'm a SS fan, so I was in to see what they cooked.
I watched it dubbed at the cinema (there wasn't a subbed session but it's fine!).
One Piece: The Series Season 1 (2023)
Live-action adaption of the first arc. My first contact with the franchise! Charismatic group, the power of friendship, adventure in a new world, fun pirate crews... I loved it. Still pondering if I should get into this giant beast of an anime. It's just...So long. Never-ending. I'm sure I would like it but dear lord, is it long. Anyway. For now I'll content myself with waiting for the second season.
I alternated between dubs and subs! I think I prefer subbed but I wanted to check out the dub and it was also very good.
Porco Rosso (1992)
A Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki oldie! I was keeping an eye out for the Ghibli Fest going on in the US this year and I realized this was the only movie in the list I hadn't watched yet, so. It's definetely not among my favorites, but it was a good movie. A Pig-faced bounty hunter pilot in and adventure through Italy. Needed a little more Gina thought!
Subs cause there's no dub.
Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac Season 2 (2022)
Second season of the 3DCG reboot of Saint Seiya, covering the first half of the 12 Temples arc. It's definetely still way below the classic series, but the battles had quite an upgrade from season 1! Also no time spent on original characters I don't care about :) And of course it's always a pleasure to see the Gold Saints... and the scenes the classic series didn't adapt! I'm glad season 3 is coming next year!
I watched it dubbed (sadly they changed the og cast in my country, but the new one did a good job too).
YashaHime: Princess Half-Demon Season 2 (2022-23)
Second (and final?) season of the Inu-Yasha spin-off sequel. Look, Yashahime has a lot of flaws, but it has its qualities too and personally I enjoyed it. Nice to travel around the feudal era in this world with familiar and new characters. I would watch more but I think that was it? Would definetely want them to make some changes... I heard the manga is different, so...food for thought!
I didn't have access to the dub when I watched s1 but this time I did! (I'm not very fond of parts of the dub, but overall it was good).
Spy x Family S1 (2022) and S2 (2023)
After seeing gifs since last year I finally sit down to watch it! It's cute, it's funny, and it's cool! Spies, assassins, school, AND family shenanigans! Loved it. Bring me more. Looking forward for the upcoming movie and for the s3 announcement.
I watched most of it dubbed but the dub is a few episodes behind the subbed version so I finished season 2 in Japanese.
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning (2023)
I didn't even watch Kizuna but I heard it wasn't necessary so might as well go, specially since they actually put this movie in theaters in my country and got most of the og dub cast... Sadly I wasn't impressed by the movie. I thought it was pretty meh. Could have given more for the group to do (it was mostly about the new character). Anyway... PS: The opening sequence was LOVELY though!!! ^^
Yu Yu Hakusho (1992-94)
I used to watch it back in the day, but never watched all of it until now! Good stuff. Not perfect, but it's a great series!!! Charismatic group, cool friendships, cool big bads, spirit detective shenaningans, youkai, and of course, battle tournaments!
Watched it dubbed, of course (except for the specials, since they weren't dubbed here). The series was in my watchlist for years but I guess knowing there would be "new" content is always a good push, which brings me to:
Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 (2023)
Live-action adaption of the first 2(!!) arcs. A pleasant surprise! The biggest problem here is definetely that it's too short. There's other flaws too, sure, but still! I had my doubts but turns out I really liked it, overall positive impression. I really hope they make more in the future!
I've watched it twice, once dubbed and once subbed!
#2023#blog#yu yu hakusho live action#one piece the series#tokyo mew mew new#hanyo no yashahime#spy x family#saint seiya the beginning#digimon 02 the beginning#yu yu hakusho#knights of the zodiac#porco rosso#digimon 02#digimon#cdz#mew mew power#one piece#I've also rewatched atla s1 and part of s2!

An Inconvenient Reminder about the 'Rin's Age' debacle.
The reason behind the belief that Rin was 14/15 when she gave birth to the twins is due largely in part to the terrible pacing of the show.
Katsuyuki Sumisawa is the main writer and the guy who pushed for this show. He's had the script for over a decade, and yet he somehow forgot to factor in the progression of time and how it affects all the characters in Hanyou no Yashahime / Princess Half demon. Which ultimately sparked this whole mess.
HQ92 has a really good breakdown of this.
In season 2, Sumisawa made matters worse with that 'She Was 18!' retcon. Because after Rin finally came out of the tree, she sounded and behaved like a child. You might think that's cute, but remember according to the flawed math, she should be in her early to mid 30s by this point. In comparison, her own daughters are more mature than she is.
So here is the whole discourse about Rin's age in a nutshell. The TL:DR being that it's a valid criticism of bad writing.

“This era is just filled with nasty things, isn't it? You can't do anything about that. And since you're both half demons I'm sure you'll have to face many more of them along the way. Oh yes, you'll run into demons that will try to make your life difficult. Just because you're the daughters of Sesshomaru. [...] Towa, Setsuna. You both have grown up to be so strong. Your father is so proud of you. I know he is.”

Toonami Weekly Recap 01/21/2023
My Hero Academia Season 6 Paranormal Liberation War Arc EP#119 (06) - Encounter, Part 2: At the Villa, Tokoyami takes Hawks to safety while the Pro Heroes and the Liberation Front continue their battle. Toga uses her Quirk to transform into another hero, going on a killing spree enraged over Twice's death, with Mr. Compress and Dabi watching on from the side, just as Gigantomachia's hand emerges from beneath. Meanwhile in Jaku City, the Police HQ scramble to keep up with the chaos caused by Shigaraki's Decay. Endeavor faces the villain head-on, who is able to easily rebuff the flame hero with his new Super Regeneration, as well as the extra Quirks from All For One. Despite this, a voice continues to call out to Shigaraki from within, telling him to get "One For All". Endeavor overhears this, which is promptly overheard by the others on the comms, including Deku. Realizing that Shigaraki is now after him, which he is able to thanks to the Search Quirk stolen from Ragdoll, Deku makes his way back into the city away from the evacuees, accompanied by Bakugo, who intends to use this opportunity to get revenge on Shigaraki for his previous kidnapping. Deku informs Endeavor that he is Shigaraki's target, causing the villain to use his Quirks to destroy their communication devices. Shigaraki suddenly appears before Deku and Bakugo, ready to steal One For All, but they are saved by Gran Torino. Endeavor and Ryukyu proceed to physically attack Shigaraki, which they now can do thanks to Eraser Head using his Erasure on him, however they are shocked to find that his new All Might-level physical strength isn't a Quirk but his actual body physically enhanced, just like the Nomu. Gran Torino tells Deku and Bakugo to remain on the sidelines while the Heroes handle things, however everyone is stunned when suddenly a group of Nomu appear from underground.
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun EP#09 (22) - The Return: Reg returns to the village with Faputa's arm, now aware that he promised to Faputa to use his incinerator to destroy the shield guarding the village's entrance, which will allow her to enter. As Reg reunites with Riko, Wazukyan arrives to congratulate them. However, Riko surmises that all of the villagers, including Wazukyan, secretly desire to leave the village so they can continue to journey deeper into the abyss, and Wazukyan is trying to carry that out by having Riko use a Cradle of Desire to wish for a way for them to leave. However, as they debate this, the village's guardian Juroimoh awakens to forcibly take Faputa's arm. Wazukyan kidnaps Vueko while Reg is forced to fight Juroimoh. However, Juroimoh proves too difficult for Reg to fight on his own, so he uses his Incinerator, which incapacitates Juroimoh and breaches a hole in the village barrier, allowing Faputa to enter and begin attacking the villagers. Meanwhile, Nanachi awakens from their slumber and Belaf informs them that Faputa has arrived.
Yashahime: The Second Act EP#45 (21) - Osamu Kirin's Apparition Conquest: The Half-Demon Princesses decide to ask next morning for the Sacred Tree of Ages to open the gateway to the feudal era, so they can help their fathers, in case Osamu targets them. Sota tells Towa that he will always think of her as his biological daughter, and that the decade they had together was the joyous years of his and Moe's lives. Towa assures a weeping Mei that she will remember her always. Moe tells Setsuna to keep it up with the lullaby, which the girls promise. Akuru opens the portal on the Sacred Tree's trunk, albeit with some difficulty, before fading away. Mei assures Towa that she will no longer cry, and that the half-demon girl does not need to worry about her anymore. As the portal closes, Moe assures her husband that they will someday see them again, which Sota agrees. Back in the feudal era, the girls are shocked at just how massive and imitinidating the Grim Comet become. Towa wonders exactly what her homeroom teacher is after, as Inuyasha and Kagome arrive to inform their daughter and twin half-nieces that demons has been being absorbed into the true form of the Grim Comet: the Grim Butterfly! Osamu senses the presence of Riku, his "younger brother" as both are Kirinmaru's incarnations, and prepares to achieve his ultimate goal. As Riku holds off demons, Rion approaches her father who is asleep after fighting Osamu. Seeing this as an opportunity, Rion holds the Kyuyokon apple to suppress Kirinmaru's immense demonic powers, but is approached by Osamu. He expresses his happiness at finally meeting her, reminding her that he is the right arm that T?ga of the West had cut off six centuries ago. He assures Rion that he will help her construct a peaceful world, in which she no longer have to suffer. Conflicted, Rion allows Osamu to fly off with her, and they become linked with the Grim Butterfly via threads, a feat that will ensure Osamu's immortality. He offers Riku the same, but he declines as it is not what he desires to achieve, even for Towa's sake. Having regained conscious, Kirinmaru witnesses Rion being absorbed into the Grim Butterfly and flies to tear it open in a desperate attempt to reach his beloved daughter. Towa receives a genuine Kikujomonji from Kohaku and Hisui as a replacement. Within the Sacred Tree of Ages, Sesshpmaru wakes up and leaves the Tree, only to encounter Kirinmaru who desires to finally settle their duel. Sesshomaru tells Rin to watch him as he fights Kirinmaru, to which Rin assures Sesshomaru will win.
