The yapok (water opossum) is one of three semiaquatic marsupials (all are opossums). And they have a lot of specific aquatic adaptations.
Their fur is water repellent. Their pouches can make a watertight seal so that their babies down drown when they’re in the water, AND the babies can survive several minutes without oxygen as well. The males also have pouches, which is unusual, which they store their balls in.
Their hind feet are webbed while still allowing them to use their hind thumbs. They also have a sixth pseudo finger on their front hands that no one is sure what they do. They also have these things called Brinkmanns organs on their hands, which are likely some kind of sensory organ, but we have no idea what they’re for! They’re unique to them. And they’re the only opossums who don’t have cloacas

Note
on the topic of different unrelated aquatic mammals wasn't there also one marsupial that became aquatic and is notable as the ONLY semiaquatic marsupial?
somehow it gets past the whole "babies might drown in the pouch" issue
yeah, the yapok! it's native to mexico and central america, and it's the result of the north american branch of opossums trying to make an otter and mostly succeeding :)
Tumblr media
there are many many MANY partially-aquatic mammals out there, but only a few totally-aquatic marine mammals.

there's more of them
We heavily support the "marketable animal that would be an awful creature to actually keep" agenda for Mothiva it suits her. Would probably bully Vi with her powers of being a beast that primarily eats rodents.
Anyways if you want really funny looking marsupials we'd like to suggest the Yapok. Look at it. Gorgeous.
Tumblr media
we're picturing that one video of a pallas' cat trying and failing to hunt rodents in the snow with the narrator that has a very formal voice but is clearly trying so hard not to make fun of the cat
who put that beast together. why its head so big. why it got wretched little man hands

Hello!
Behold and feast your eyes on the mighty yapok!
Tumblr media
They're so cute!!
Look at those eyes, and whiskers and claws!
Oh, and fun fact! The yapok is the only species of marsupials with pouches for both the sexes. Everyone gets a cute lil personal bag!
Which animal did you get?
