Have you noticed? Have you seen how many new riders there are on the roads? Have you realized that 60%+ (at least here) are female? That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact! Not to mention a few strategically placed rhinestones and BOOM, you’ve got a woman’s jacket!(NOT REALLY THOUGH!) And because there’s NO ONE just to cater to them, to you ladies you’ve almost got no choice but to buy it. It’s true. And what’s more, it’s f'in sad! Ladies are starting to run shit on their own in the Riders World, They started forming their own Riding Clubs years ago. Clubs like Women In the Wind est. 1979, Leather and Lace Nation est. 1983 and fast forward to more recently the Litas Worldwide with over 600 members, I think in as many as 8 countries and 45 cities just to name a few! Motorbikes are oddly absent from Myanmar’s biggest city
LATE AT NIGHT Klo He Bin likes to don his biking jacket and take to the roads of Yangon on his Yamaha EasyRider. The other 15 members of his gang, the “Freeriders”, cruise alongside, wearing leathers embroidered with their logo. Mr Klo (not his real name) has been a motorbike enthusiast for years and says he likes the freedom that comes with it. However, in Yangon that freedom is restricted. He can roar around the city only after dark, when few policemen are on the streets. That is because in much of Yangon motorbikes are banned.

In most other cities in South-East Asia motorbikes are ubiquitous. Rising incomes have made them attainable. Shoddy public-transport systems and woeful traffic boost their appeal. A survey by the Pew Research Centre in 2015 looked at motorcycle ownership in 44 countries. The top seven were in Asia, with over 80% of households in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam owning one. In Hanoi riders terrorise pedestrians who try to cross roads—and sometimes those who stand inattentively on pavements. Across the region, motorbikes shift everything from steel piping to families of five.
All that has been oddly absent in Yangon since 2003. No one knows why. One rumour claims that, before military rule ended in 2016, a biker threatened a general with a finger-gun gesture and was able to escape with ease. Another says the general’s daughter died in a motorcycle accident. The ban applies only to central Yangon. Enforcement is patchy: police, who are allowed to ride motorbikes, turn a blind eye in exchange for kickbacks.
Still, the ban changes life in the city. It is a headache for businesses. Shopowners rely on cars and vans to restock their wares, clogging up narrow side-streets. In other South-East Asian cities startups deliver everything from meals to massages by motorbike. In Yangon the fledgling industry relies on cyclists. Shady Ramadan, founder of Door2Door, a delivery firm, has a fleet of 80 pedallers. In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second city, the average delivery takes 32 minutes; in Yangon it takes 50 minutes.
The ban forces most of the city’s 6m residents to rely on overcrowded and chaotic public transport to get around. The city’s commuter trains are a shambles. Much of the track was laid in colonial times. Trains travel at 5-10kph. About half of journeys are by bus, a higher share than in other South-East Asian cities. The government recently overhauled the network, reducing the number of operators, who used to compete on the same routes, causing buses to race dangerously between stops. It also introduced set wages for conductors, who used to be paid by commission, leading to alarming overcrowding. Yet the system remains far from adequate to serve the city.
Buses are moving more slowly, too, as booming car ownership clogs the roads. It used to be only the army and state-controlled firms that had the right to import cars. A Toyota Land Cruiser would sell for $500,000. When the restrictions were lifted in 2011, cars flooded the market. Prices dropped and the roads began to gum up. Average travel speeds in downtown Yangon fell from 38kph in 2007 to 10kph in 2015.
The motorbike ban has mixed effects on this traffic. On the one hand, it delays the point at which individuals can afford to buy a vehicle, meaning there are fewer vehicles on the road. In Yangon there are about 135 private vehicles for every 1,000 people, barely a quarter of the level in Mandalay. What is more, motorbikes tend to weave in and out of traffic, causing further delays, points out Sean Fox of Bristol University in Britain. On the other hand, the ban boosts the rate of car ownership, which is 40% higher in Yangon than in Mandalay.
The net effect is to reduce congestion, albeit at great inconvenience to many. A study by Hiroki Inaba and Hironori Kato of the University of Tokyo estimates that the ban lowers traffic volume by 18%. That proportion, however, is forecast to shrink to 5% by 2035, as incomes rise and more people buy cars. The case for restricting the freedom of the Freeriders will only get weaker as Yangon grows richer.

Harley’s Purchase Of StaCyc May Mean An “Electric For All” Strategy
When Harley acquired kids’ electric bicycle maker StaCyc a couple of weeks ago, industry watchers and H-D fans alike raised their eyebrows. What would America’s biggest manufacturer of motorcycles (for adults) do with a toy catering to beings who couldn’t even drive? Coming on the heels of its lightweight electric concepts, some people wondered if The Motor Company had lost its mojo.
But if you took a step back and thought about the transportation issues of American cities in general, or even just changes in the moto industry writ large, Harley’s moves made some sense. In fact, its strategy could position Milwaukee in the driver’s seat for the near future.
Portland, Oregon, where I live, prides itself as being progressive, green, and increasingly anti-automobile. It’s a small city that’s experiencing a boom in population, with the result being big-city problems like denser neighborhoods, gridlocked roads, and transportation headaches. How do they address the mess? So far it’s with bicycles and mass transit (and sometimes scooters), like other revitalized downtowns across the country.
That means bicycle lanes pop up regardless of where they’re needed, and I often wonder: What if there were a way to take advantage of those lanes without, you know, having to actually sweat—or wear spandex? An electric bike would fill the bill perfectly. It’d zip through traffic using infrastructure I’d already paid for with my tax dollars (and the dirty looks from pedal pushers would be so worth it). Which leads us to surmise there’s a broader electric vehicle strategy afoot from Harley, underscored by the purchase of StaCyc. Here’s how we see it.
1. Balance bikes: Start ’em out young.
StaCyc, which stands for stability cycle, is essentially a Strider-style balance bike with a small electric engine for children. Simply put, the powered bikes teach kids the basics of balance, hand-eye coordination, braking, and throttle control—all things you need in motorcycling. While $640 probably seems like a lot for a balance bike (for the 12-inch 12e model), when you consider the motor-less Strider 14x model retails for $200, the hit to the wallet seems a little less severe. The beefier and more powerful StaCyc 16e is the logical next step, which hopefully leads to a taller, faster bicycle, e-bicycle, or even scooter, culminating with…an Electric Glide Ultra Classic?
Okay, maybe not, but with StaCyc, H-D can add another level of riding products to complement its heavily adult-skewed portfolio. It’s also a ripe opportunity to reach young enthusiasts and give them a small taste of the brand. Even better, there’s really no other competition in this relatively new segment.
2. Bicycles: The middle space appealing to both adolescents and adults.
Bicycles will continue to blur the line between traditional transportation and recreation, and some feel that lower-end motorcycle sales may be cannibalized by electric bicycles in the urban market, so it makes sense for Harley to dip a toe into this segment. On the other hand, a Harley-branded bicycle could be a hard sell given the number of established players. It’s probably a good thing the new H-D electric lightweight—call it Concept 1—isn’t technically a bicycle; it has no pedals and is completely motor-powered (though we’re unsure of top speed or class), but it is a mountain bike design with dual suspension.
The other wrinkle here is that there’s plenty of competition. Yamaha might be the biggest player as far as moto manufacturers go; the company has offered pedal-assist road bikes for years, it makes purpose-built electric mountain bikes, and this year entered the US eBike market officially. In fact, Yamaha currently has five styles of e-bicycles available in the US.
Ducati too is no stranger to EVs, and the top-shelf, just-released Ducati MIGG-RR electric mountain bike is made with Thok E-bikes but is available in Europe only. Ducati says more EVs are in the works too.
Interestingly enough, you’ll also find Erik Buell in this segment; the former Buell head honcho and inventor has joined Fuell which calls itself an “urban mobility brand” to produce the Fluid electric bicycle. There’s also an electric motorcycle model on tap, but we’ll know more after the full reveal next month.
3. Scooters: Expanding the product line to draw young riders and urban dwellers.
Like it or not, scooters are key to Harley’s electrification strategy; they’re unintimidating, easy to ride (no clutch), and convenient to park. You don’t even need a license in some states. The problem is the space is pretty saturated, though not necessarily by the big moto brands.

Honda has been unusually quiet in this segment—production of the PCX electric scooter started last year (but only for the Japanese market), and Big Red has just—just—broken cover on a full-size electric dirt bike prototype at the Tokyo Motor Show. Details are scarce, but it’s the same form factor as the company’s CR250 model, and looks close to ready for prime time. Yamaha’s had a wide range of electric scooters in Europe and Asia for years, but also currently no options here. And BMW—who you’d think would be further along, considering the i3 electric car has been around for seven years—brought the C evolution to America last year, but it’s a goofy-looking electric maxi scooter that’s sluggish (0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds) and heavy (606 pounds).
Meanwhile, Vespa introduced its Elettrica late last year, and big scooter brands Kymco and Gogoro have several new EV scooters (several with “smart” features) on tap for this year.

Would a bar-and-shield branded product give these models a run for their money? If it’s priced right (sub-$10K), quite possibly. With its compact, retro-futuristic lines and skateboardy running boards H-D’s Electric Concept 2 (the scooter) hits all the trendy styling notes, while the mini-ape handlebar, inverted fork, and LED light ring adds street cred. We hope The MoCo makes this thing, and judging from the riding videos we’ve seen, we suspect it will.
4. Full-size premium electrics: Power and performance without the maintenance, but at a cost.

You can put the LiveWire in this category. Harley bigwigs have called it a halo product, one meant to generate interest in the electric motorcycle space but not necessarily to define it. It’s a premium product at a lofty price, and would likely attract the same checkbooks as players like the $22,565 Energica Eva, with its streetfightery design. On paper the Eva looks a bit lighter and more powerful, but the LiveWire brings more gadgets and connectivity. You can put the new Zero SR/F ($20,995 for the Premium model) in this group too, though it edges out the LiveWire on range. Both Energica’s and Zero’s bikes offer fast charging options, and both wallop the LiveWire on power, offering more than 100 hp and 130 pound-feet of torque; the LiveWire’s underwhelming numbers are 74 hp and 52 pound-feet. Things won’t be easy for H-D in this segment.
Admittedly, the previous bikes are designed for different consumers, but as a group they make the funky Fuell Flow ($10,995) and Lightning’s new $12,998 Strike (which will be dropping any day now) look like an absolute steal. Cake’s Kalk off-roader is in another category, as are big-money e-machines like the Jaguar Land Rover-backed $117K Arc Vector (with matching HUD helmet and haptic jacket).
From a certain standpoint, H-D has essentially leapfrogged over other legacy motorcycle manufacturers in the streetbike electrification game, at least in the US. If The Motor Company actually starts making the e-mountain bike, the electric scooter, and the midsize concept shown last year, it could potentially have five entirely different EVs available by 2021. The obvious question is, why are the other majors so late to the party?

World: America's bikers are divided over Trump's war with Harley-Davidson
STURGIS, S.D. — Gary Rathbun rumbled into South Dakota to attend the United States’ pre-eminent gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts atop his Harley-Davidson, a 2009 Ultra Classic that brought him 800 miles from Idaho.
Like many of Harley’s most loyal customers, Rathbun was enraged by the company’s announcement this summer that, because of the Trump administration’s trade fight, it would begin manufacturing the bikes it sells in Europe outside the United States.
His anger echoed that of President Donald Trump, whose public denouncement of Harley’s decision has put one of the country’s most iconic brands in the uncomfortable position of clashing with a president who is immensely popular with most of its customers.
“I’m riding my last Harley,” said Rathbun, 67, a retired truck driver whose bike rally essentials included a steel knife nestled in his belt, a saddle bag stuffed with a Ruger pistol and a small bottle of Jack Daniel’s cinnamon whiskey. “It was American-made, and that’s why we stood behind them.”
Harley took a public relations risk to protect its bottom line when it said it would skirt European Union tariffs aimed directly at the industry in retaliation for Trump’s steel and aluminum levies. Rather than eat the cost of the tariffs or raise prices on the bikes it sells in Europe by $2,200, the company said it would move some production overseas.
In a warning to other companies that might follow suit, Trump described Harley’s decision as an act of corporate treason, declaring in a Twitter post in June: “If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end — they surrendered, they quit!”
It was a sentiment shared by many of the hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who converged this week upon the Black Hills of South Dakota, most of whom developed a relationship with their Harleys well before Trump became president. Still, as leather-clad baby boomers revved engines, drank beer and swayed to classic rock ballads, Trump’s influence was palpable.
Like Trump, Gary Panapinto, 63, a machinist from Illinois, had doubts about Harley’s true intentions, believing that the company was planning to offshore the bulk of its bike production, and, like Trump has intimated, he suggested that Americans would be forced to buy a product that was made overseas. While Trump has fanned that perception, Harley has said it will shift production only for bikes it sells in Europe and that American bikes will still be made in the United States.
“They need to keep them here in the United States, especially if they’re going to sell them here,” Panapinto said. “I think Trump is just trying to protect jobs in the U.S.”
Oliver Lapointe, a retiree from New Hampshire who rides cheaper Japanese bikes, said he used to aspire to own a Harley but could never afford one. Now he thinks they are not worth it because they are filled with foreign-made parts and, he said, increasingly made overseas. Like several Trump administration officials, he accused the company of using the tariffs to justify a decision that it already had in mind.
“They’re always advertising that they’re made in America, so I don’t think they should do it,” Lapointe, 70, said. “They’re greedy.”
The company declined to comment, but it pointed to a July interview in which its chief executive, Matthew Levatich, defended the decision. He denied that he wanted to shift its manufacturing, noting that it would not take up to 18 months to execute the plan if it were in the cards all along.
“We’ve worked very hard to be apolitical in how we approach our business and our consumers everywhere in the world,” he said. “We have to do what we have to do based on the facts and circumstances before us, and we’re doing that.”
Some hard-core Trump supporters said they understood the economic rationale behind Harley’s decision. Few complex machines are fully sourced and assembled in the United States these days, and even the riders who are devoted to the ideal of a fully American-made product said they understood that companies must compete globally.
Bikers have been among the groups most loyal to Trump, as motorcyclists in the United States tend to be predominantly working-class men older than 50 and veterans — demographics that comprise the bulk of the president’s base. Trump has embraced that allegiance, saying recently that “I guarantee you everybody that ever bought a Harley-Davidson voted for Trump.”
On Saturday, Trump invited hundreds of bikers from the New Jersey Bikers for Trump chapter to visit him on vacation in Bedminster, New Jersey. He praised them as “people who truly love our Country.”
Some who are generally pleased with Trump said he was wrong to bully the motorcycle maker merely for trying to make a profit, but they remained loyal to him nonetheless.
“You’ve got to take it with a grain of salt. He’s hot one day and he’s cold the next,” Bill Schaner, an electrical supply salesman from North Dakota who has owned seven Harley bikes, said of the president. “If they’re going to make bikes in Europe and sell them in Europe, let them go. We’ll take the bikes made in America.”
At a souvenir stand selling Trump memorabilia off the main drag in Sturgis, Larry Rich said that, as a businessman, Trump should understand that Harley is doing what it can to stay profitable.
“I don’t like everything he says, but I don’t like everything my wife says,” said Rich, 72, who used to ride Indians — another U.S. brand, made by Polaris — before giving up the hobby.
For his part, Trump has been good for business. Rich was busy selling shirts printed with an image of the president blazing past the White House on a Harley-Davidson with Stormy Daniels, the pornographic film actress who claims to have had an affair with Trump, falling off the back. The tryst that Daniels — whose real name is Stephanie Clifford — says took place in 2006 has not turned off customers.
“Well, he was a Democrat back then,” Rich said with a smile.
Veterans of the Sturgis bike rally, which is in its 78th year, said that the hardships facing Harley-Davidson go beyond Trump’s tough words and stem from years of declining ridership in the United States.
Leslye Beaver, owner of The Beaver Bar in Sturgis and several other biker bars across the country, said that Harley and other U.S. motorcycle manufacturers are at a crossroads because their products have lacked appeal to young people in the United States. She pointed out that the trade disputes have increased their raw material costs and hindered their ability to export to Europe, which is a growth market.
“I think they’re doing what they have to do to stay in the game,” Beaver, who lives in Georgia and supports Trump, said while patrolling the parking lot of her bar in a golf cart. “It’s human for people to be mad because Harley is so American, but I think they want to be here.”
For years, Harley-Davidson’s sales in the United States have been steadily declining as the Milwaukee-based company grappled with an aging population, a vibrant secondary market and the changing tastes of consumers. Recently, it has focused on marketing its motorcycles to women, selling branded clothing and boosting international sales as a way to grow profits.
The average cost of a Harley is about $20,000, and they top out at about $40,000, making the motorcycles a luxury item for people who do not use them as their primary mode of transportation. In 2017, the company’s U.S. retail sales fell for the third consecutive year to 147,972 motorcycles, while sales in international markets have been climbing slowly or holding steady, with more room to grow. In the past five years, Harley’s stock price has fallen by nearly 25 percent, even as the stock market has been on a tear.
Harley is also under pressure from more intense competition. In the 1990s at Sturgis, Harley riders would torch so called “rice burners” — a pejorative term for Japanese bikes — or tie them to the back of their all-American motorcycles and drag them down the streets. Although Harleys continue to be the most popular ride, foreign brands such as BMW, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki are increasingly common.
The greater appreciation for foreign-made bikes was on display at Buffalo Chip, a sprawling 600-acre campground 3 miles east of Sturgis. At the campground, Michael Lichter, a Colorado-based photographer and curator, puts on exhibitions of specialty motorcycles from around the world as a way to make the rally less Harley-centric and broaden interest and inspiration beyond American bikes.
“People need to be exposed to more,” said Lichter, who hopes to put on a show of all Japanese bikes next year. “If you’re buying just because it’s American, I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
He added: “It means there’s no pressure on American manufacturers to build better.”
To the president’s most ardent admirers, there is nothing better than American-made.
Chris Cox, the founder of the Bikers for Trump group that has organized demonstrations for Trump across the country since he was a candidate, was using the Sturgis gathering this year to drum up more support for Trump and to mobilize opposition to Harley. He wants shareholders and riders to come together and petition the company to promise it will give generous severance packages to workers who might get fired as it moves manufacturing to other countries.
Like Trump, Cox is furious with Harley’s chief executive, Levatich, whom Cox says has “ties” to Europe and wants to make the company less American.
Levatich, who has been with Harley since 1994, has held senior roles overseeing its European operations, including the management of the Italian motorcycle business MV Agusta that Harley acquired in 2008.
“We’re not going to sit back on a hope and a promise that they’re going to do the right thing,” said Cox, who brought with him a leather jacket autographed by Trump at the White House when he was in Washington for a recent visit with some bikers. He said that Trump insisted that he visit the Oval Office because his group has been so supportive and loyal.
Explaining the importance of domestic production, Cox said that Vietnam War veterans who joined motorcycle clubs after the war were disappointed decades later when the new brake pads they needed to buy were made in Vietnam. He said that many bikers he knows are now wearing long sleeves to conceal their Harley tattoos.
But even Cox, a South Carolina chain saw artist who carves trees and other objects, could not escape the realities of global supply chains and the high cost of making some products in the United States. While he used to sell American-made T-shirts, the $20 Trump shirts he was selling outside his recreational vehicle were made in Haiti. The American-made shirts proved to be a hard sell.
“If I get a T-shirt made in the USA, it’s going to cost about $8 more,” Cox said. “I looked far and wide to try to get a shirt made in America, it’s just they get you, they gouge you.”
