"Coquille" Coming back from San Jose a few years ago we drove 101 up the Oregon coast. The southern coast area is home to lots of Myrtlewood and Big Leaf Maple and having just attended our first AAW symposium we were obliged to stop and check the offerings of the numerous wood purveyors along the way. I picked up this piece of maple burl and recently got around to turning it. It proved to a rather spectacular piece of timber and as is often the case there was a good sized spot of punky, hard to turn cleanly material. I soaked the whole thing in lacquer to help firm it up and it seems to have worked. I asked Karen about filling the voids and she said to just leave them. Proved to be a good decision. Lots of pictures but every surface has something to show. Final finish with wipe-on satin poly and buffed. 152mm x 190m (6" x 7-1/2") Thank you for looking!! #patandkarenmiller #arborsongarts #woodart #yakimaartists #woodturning #woodurn #mapleburl #coosbay

A tricky (for me) Lathe and Rose Engine box.....A piece of dry Pacific Madrone cut in two. Then I added a connecting joint and turned the two hemispheres separately and hollowed them. Next both pieces went on to identical jam chucks. This allowed me to decorate the first half with the Rose Engine, then the second half. One half was a bit larger than it's sibling so I put the larger piece back on the RE and without changing settings ran another pass which left the two pieces within a few thousandths of being identical. Close enough. Still mulling finish options but I like results far I like what I see. The stand is a piece of Camphor blackened with Art Liestman's fiery technique. The box is just over 3" in diameter. Thank you for looking! #arborsongarts #patandkarenmiller #yakimaartists #pnw#ornamentalturning #roseengine #woodbox #woodart #madrone #arbutus #aaw

The "black" in Blackwood gets all the big press but I love how it contrasts with it's sapwood sibling. Friend Ron gave me a little branch piece that he rescued from a firewood pile so I chucked it up last night and found this cute little bell inside. Some beads, a little RE work on the lid (along with a few beads to tie it all together) a bit of hollowing and a Wenge handle and Voila! a bell box....... 6-1/2" x 3" Thank you for looking! #arborsongarts #patandkarenmiller #yakimaartists #woodbox #woodbox #woodartist #ornamentalturning #roseengine #africanblackwood

A little citrus box with a dome lid decorated with a subtle flutes. Boring technojargon alert :)--The lid is patterned using an S24 rosette and spherical slide rest. The box uses the same rosette with the cutting frame in the linear cross slide using a powered X-axis. After I finished I sprayed yellow and red dye glancing it off the edge trying to get the colors on opposite sides of the crest. It worked for the most part. I turned and carved the finial from the same wood. I usually use a contrasting wood but like how this looks. 5-1/2" x 3" Thank you for looking!l #arborsongarts #patandkarenmiller #woodart #roseengine #ornamentalturning #woodbox #yakimaartists
