Picking animal forms in my animal shapeshifter AU for Seirin’s new freshmen Asahina and Yaagi is so funny bc I know next to nothing about them, so I’m operating on vibes and aesthetic alone.

I actually read a translation of this light novel chapter and took some notes! It only endeared me to these little guys more.

Asahina Daigo (dark hair)

- 180cm (5’9”) 75kg (165lbs)

- position: Power forward

- a distinct trait is his long limbs.

- He played in middle school and his team went to Nationals, but didn’t win.

- Pretty expressionless, only talks when he thinks it’s necessary.

- Doesn’t like wasting his time.

- Not afraid to speak his mind.

- Observant and blunt.

- Weirds Kagami out because “he keeps glaring at” him.

- Wants to win the national title.

- Tells Yaagi to quit, which makes Kuroko say something to him (gets defensive on Yaagi’s behalf).

- Asahina originally thinks Kuroko is the manager. When he finds out he isn’t, Asahina starts down-talking Kuroko, which is what gets Kagami to finally blow up at him.

- It’s revealed that Asahina looks up to Kagami and Kagami is the reason he chose Seirin; basically he internet stalked Kagami and read magazine articles about him, but never saw a game in person and regrets not going to watch the Winter Cup championship last year. (Essentially he has a basketball crush on Kagami 😂).

- Had bad grades in middle school but studied hard to get into Seirin.

- Uses “Kagami-san” for Kagami. The reason he stares at Kagami a lot and watches him is because he wants to learn his moves (but it comes across as glaring to Kagami).

- After clearing up the misunderstanding about the glaring and getting respect for Kuroko (after seeing him play in a game that was Kawahara, Furihata, Fukuda, Kuroko, and Kagami vs Asahina, Yaagi, Hyuuga, Izuki, Koganei, and Mitobe), listens attentively to everything Kagami says.

- Refers to Kuroko as simply “senpai”/“that senpai”.

Yaagi Yuta (light hair)

- Nervous demeanor.

- Unknown height and weight but is said to be noticeably small.

- Respectful, bows to people a lot.

- He has no prior basketball experience and was in the computer research club in middle school (IT club).

- Low stamina. Riko has Kuroko hang back with him when he can’t complete the running drills and sits with him.

- He respects Kuroko, Kuroko is very supportive of him. Kuroko was the first person he confided in about why he joined the basketball team. Kuroko wouldn't tell the rest of Seirin though when asked because he respected Yaagi's privacy.

- Kagami, Fukuda, Kawahara, Furihata, and Kuroko have been practicing the Stealth Full Court Man to Man Defensive technique after normal practice ever since the end of the Winter Cup, and Yaagi lives near the court they were practicing at and fell in love with the cooperative play style that was like “a well run program”.

- Applies computer terms to basketball haha.

- He gets really excited and passionate about basketball.

- Most likely uses “____-senpai” for everyone, but is only seen saying “Kuroko-senpai”.

Name Analysis:

*disclaimer: I'm no expert in kanji. what i've gathered here is stuff I found by researching online.

Asahina (朝日奈) means “morning/dawn” + “sun/day” + “apple tree”. Daigo (大悟) means “great wisdom/enlightenment”.

Yaagi (夜木) means “night/evening” + “tree/wood” (also kanji for “Thursday” in there). Yuuta (悠太) means “long time/long distance” + “abundant/profuse”. 

Their features + personalities are basically the opposite of what you’d think; Asahina who is “the morning” has dark hair and eyes and a brooding personality whereas Yaagi who is “the night” has lighter colored hair and eyes and a more lively personality.

In short,

Basically, Kagami and Kuroko each both get their own little fanboy/underclassman and I love that so much. And Asahina is more like Kuroko in terms of personality (blunt, selectively quiet/seemingly expressionless) and Yaagi is more like Kagami (very excitable, passionate, a bit loud) so I think that’s a fun little detail/swap lol.

So I HAVE FOUND THE NAMES OF OUR NEW SEIRIN MEMBERS!

Some notes:

Seirin senpais have already noted their personalities are the complete opposite from each other (I think the pic can explain that for itself)

As someone mentioned somewhere on Tumblr, they have the kanji for “morning” and “night” in their last names. 

For the time being only two new members have joined Seirin

Asahina has heard of the rumors about “The Phantom Sixth Man of the Generation of Miracles” and realizes in a practice match that it’s Kuroko, who teaches him Seirin’s way of fighting. 

That’s all I have for now until I look at the novel more in depth.I just briefly skimmed it
