he actually doodled those all the time. fun fact: this particular version has a mistake! western music is a base 12 system (12 tone equal tempered, which is to say 12 equally spaced notes within an octave) so Coltrane lined up 5 octaves worth of notes (each point of the star lands on a C) for a total of 60 points that make sort of a musical clock face. where each hour would land you find a double circled note, and those notes make a full circle of fourths. the mistake is at 9 o'clock where he should have (and did in other drawings) circled the A instead of the Ab. he would use this diagram to map out chord changes, often with particular geometries in mind. it's super fascinating
