I made this side blog a while ago, but never really used it, so here goes! My name is Nikki, I’m a Linguistics major, and I hope to teach English abroad someday (most likely in Japan or South Korea). I’m moving this summer, so if posts or anything are delayed that’d be why (I’m also taking classes over the summer bc I hate myself ). 

This fall quarter I’m taking Elementary Mandarin 1, Classical Civilizations and Foundations of Language study. Ootd for the first day of spring quarter- feeling pretty optimistic about my classes, even though one of them involves computer programming and I have the technological capabilities of a boomer. (Ignore the messy background, I’m hoarding boxes to move in a couple months)

Maladaptive Daydreaming stuff

(This is more of a personal log than anything)

I don’t remember when I started daydreaming, but I think it was around 11-12 years old, and I remember pacing my room with headphones in listening to the movie soundtracks and pretending I was a character in said movies.

(2011-2015) My daydreaming peaked in high school. I remember being very depressed and numb emotionally, and mostly ashamed of my daydreaming. School and extracurricular activities drained me, and my first relationship senior year fell apart because of my lack of communication (again, shame).

(2015-2017) My first couple years at community college were rough, I was still really depressed and exhausted all the time. I went out for walks at midnight, and often called my mom while I was having a breakdown. It wasn’t until my dad passed away in 2017 that I finally learned what maladaptive daydreaming was, and I was truly relieved that I wasn’t the only one.

In 2017 I moved across the country and finally started seeing a counselor in 2018. I kinda understand my daydreaming a bit more now, what triggers it, how to work myself out out of it, and alternative coping.

(2019-present) Moved again, and kinda abandoned all the progress I’d made the last couple years, focusing on school and work instead. And beating myself up when I don’t reach certain expectations I set for myself, which causes me to stress out and triggers my need to daydream. I’ve been diagnosed with depression recently, and i’ve started a new antidepressant, but I haven’t noticed any difference in my moods or daydreaming habits. I’ve reached out to counselors and psychiatrists, so hopefully I can start working on my mental health again.

EDIT: I would like to add that my fiancee has helped keep me grounded and ‘current’ in the sense that I don’t dissociate as bad when we’re together. So although I’ve kinda abandoned my mental health the last couple years, he’s helped in his own way.

Finished finals today!!

Still have a Chinese project to make up, but it shouldn’t be too bad. Got a B- in my phonology final, which was better than what I was expecting honestly.

Now just to pray that I pass Chinese. 😅
