Just goes to show: the experiences an artist feels are the most personal are the most sincere, the most universal, and resonate with the audience.
hi, i just wanted to let you know that i LOVED Clair de Lune!!!! it reminds me so much of the sort of daydreams i had as a kid. like, SO much like them! i found the comic really inspiring, your art is incredible, and so is the story! the ending is so sweet too, i thought it was an amazing way to resolve things. thank you so much for making it, and for sharing it!!!!!
Ahhh thank you so much!! I was afraid at times that I might be doing something a bit too niche with like the daydreams and such, but to see it's finding people out there that enjoy it and find it inspiring is so rewarding! Thanks a lot for reading 🧡

ShortBox Comics Member Interview: Xulia Vicente
Throughout the month of October, the Cartoonist Cooperative will be sharing interviews with members of the Co-op who have a new comic available at the ShortBox Comics Fair 2024!
NOTE: The Cartoonist Cooperative is not affiliated, associated, authorized, endorsed by, or in any way formally connected with ShortBox.
Today’s spotlight is Xulia Vicente a.k.a @takitakos and their new comic for ShortBox, Clair de Lune.
Tell us more about your new comic?
XV: It’s called Clair de Lune, and it’s basically about two music students, in a bit of a futuristic setting, that try to summon a mysterious kaiju-like creature through a secret song. It explores what it’s like to experience perfectionism, art and competition at such a young age.
I’ve drawn quite a bunch of comic pages at this point, but for this fair; I’m putting out what would be my longest solo comic so far. It’s also the one that feels more personal, since I’m basing it both on experiences and anecdotes from my music school years, and personal struggles with art. Overall, I feel it’s a bit of a milestone for me and a step up in my personal journey of finding my own voice.
Tell us about your creative process; how did you develop this comic and what are the steps you took to bring it to the final stage?
XV: The first months of this year I was working a part-time job, so I was only able to take notes of the kind of stuff I wanted to do for the fair. I’ve had the idea of making a comic around a music school for years now; I even had the first scene pictured in my mind. However, I needed to simplify that story to be able to complete the comic in time. When I finished the part-time job and started working full-time on the comic, I wrote a new story in what felt like a fever dream, mixing my new notes with the original ideas for the music school story. Writing is usually the biggest struggle for me, and takes the longest.
I then took some time to design characters and put together a little pitch to test the interest and charm with trusted friends. It helped me build motivation and confidence in the project too. Since I was against the clock, I scheduled the phases of the project and made some decisions to make them as functional as possible. I drew the storyboard and cleaned it up so that I could both sketch shadows and use it to trace pencils.
From here on, I work traditionally and start going faster. I trace the pencils, then rework them a bit and then ink. After that, I scan, edit, letter and finish with both the grayscale pages and the color ones. This is all a lot of work, but once I’ve taken the time to make all the decisions in the pre-production phase, I have a clear course to follow and it becomes easier for me.

hi hi hi!!
Name your favourite artists who inspire you! Your arts are so cute
Other ship aside Armin/Annie?
Do you plan to draw more Aruani?
oh hiiii !!! 😊
1.
This is very difficult aaaaaa :_) obviously all the aruani related artists that I follow inspire me a lot, maybe we have very different art styles but I love seeing their art and they encourage me to embrace and enjoy the fandom as I am still a bit self-conscious about that "nerdy" part of myself.
I am kinda shy to mention specific people but let's see...... @nobluesea, @annawayne, @lidatan, @brbarou, @phyroblue, @ghostieking, @pepperjackets, @catfein ... aaand I have to mention @kalruani who I think is my fav aruani artist but I don't think they're on tumblr...... 👉👈 I don't wanna make anybody feel bad if I forget them, so if I follow you, consider yourself part of the list PLEASE :_)
some other non tumblr related people:
Ana Galvañ • Sara Soler • Gabriel Picolo • Bryan Lee O'Malley • alessandro barbucci • Núria Tamarit • Miguel Gallardo (RIP) • Maria Herreros • Laura Brouwers • Gretel Lusky • KAZLAND • Cristina Daura • So Lazo • Dakota Cates • Ingrid Arbiol • Paw Salcés • Xulia Vicente • Beatriz Fletes • LUCIA CUÑAT ORTEL • Paco Roca • Fran Riolobos • Ian • Sha'an d'Anthes • Lucy Zhang • David Ramírez • Julia Kaye • Alex Norris • AND some friends that are also great artists: [RAMUNE] - Alba Flores - Natalia Lucas - Joaquín Guirao
I'm forgetting people for sure aaaaaaaaa I tried my best.........
The alternative / punk / fanzine / local scene inspires me a lot, shows like Adventure Time, videogames like NITW or Omori with great art, and MUSIC!
2.
at this moment tbh I am super aruani focused... but I've shipped a lot through my life haha when I was a child I was obsessed with TK + Kari (digimon) and I usually shipped my fav character from anything, which usually was the misfit / weird / nerd one (I still do btw) 😅 Some ships that I also like at this moment could be zutara, bubbline, tomgreg from succession (in a fun way tbh), OBVIOUSLY tayley from paramore but they are real people so..... HAHA idk if you ask me what do I think of some specific ship I'll tell you my take!
3.
YES!! 🥰
thank you for asking!

I made a gender moodboard for last week's stream of Time Theft Today on Dr. Devon Price's twitch. The stream was very fun and Devon and Maddie are doing another gender moodboard stream this Friday! If doing a gender moodboard is something that interests you I would definitely recommend it!

Let me recommend a comic about this to you. It's Elisa e Marcela by Xulia Vicente (@takitakos). It's very well made, short and heartwarming. It gets most things right about the real facts (the ones we know about) and imagines the rest in a coherent and hopeful way ❤️
can i ask something. have you seen the movie elisa and marcela, based on the real life lesbian galician couple who fooled authorities in spain and got married? i have it on my watchlist, but i've seen many critics saying (while it's directed by a woman) it's extremely fetishizing and not that accurate. what do you think? grazas~
hi! so i haven't properly watched it, i sort of speed-watched it once while it was on netflix just to get a feel for it cause i suspected i wouldn't like it very much at all and i had no real interest in sitting through the whole thing. i sort of regret it now, and i do have half a mind to give it a proper try if only to know exactly what's wrong with it. I think the general consensus is that the movie is not very good indeed, or at least it didn't make much of an impact in galizan lgtb circles and we do like the figures of Elisa and Marcela quite a bit. As for the specific criticisms you point out I'm not really sure tbh, I really have no idea how accurate to the real life events the movie is, and except for that one infamous sex scene I'm not sure if I've seen it criticized as fetishizing. My issues with the movie stem more from the use it makes of galizan, relegating it to a secondary place in favor of spanish for reasons i understand but don't like, and from it's general vibe as a very serious b&w drama, which i again i understand it's an artistic choice, but one i don't appreciate at all. In any case, i think both you and i should probably watch it and come to a conclusion afterwards. If you do and to tell me about it I'd be delighted <3

Fantasía e ciencia ficción con sabor a fanzine
Altar Mutante #7
Judge Death: Darkness descends
