oh my god I found this one extra drawing of my young XTC design that I drew back in 2021 and realized I literally never posted it somehow. She’s bullying Jon (based on my real experience with my cousin; he will be taller then her eventually).

I’m the one that’s trying to keep a running list of named Coluans, so if anyone knows any that I missed, please let me know.
My disjointed observations:
I could accept Var Don - sans hyphen - as a Coluan name. Don is perhaps a little softer sounding than the other surnames, but it’s not outrageously different.
If Z’ndr was spelt Zyndr or Zndyr I think it could work. It’s the apostrophe that makes it strange.
I believe that Lysl was reverse engineered from Lyrl. Especially since she’s supposedly Vril Jr’s mother in prime earth. However, as we established, Lyrl named himself after Lyrissa Mallor, a Talokite, so it’s iffy on how well it actually fits with the pattern.
Getting on my bitchbox: Techne is 100% a name that was made to try and sound cool and no one can convince me otherwise, while Ginger is just wrong and bad. It makes no sense. It’s a human name after an earth plant given to an alien woman from the ancient past, before they had contact with earth. I refuse to accept it.
A (not so) quick look at Coluan names
We don’t know a lot about Coluans or Coluan culture. They and their planet have gone through a lot of changes over the years and only a very limited number of the them have had important roles in the DC universe, which means that there aren’t a lot of named Coluan characters. But we can still discern some patterns in their naming conventions.
Firstly: They’re not human. Their names aren’t supposed to mean anything in any particular human language and while some do it seems to mostly be by accident (or laziness) rather than design. The vast majority of their names are entirely made up.
Coluans use a binominal naming system where they have one first name and one surname. They don’t seem to have middle names or add patronymics or matronymics to their names.
Their surnames are very simple, being between three and four letters and only one syllable long. Most, though not all, of them contain an “x” and they seem to commonly end in either an “x” or an “l”. It seems like surnames can be inherited from either the mother or the father and are inherited without being changed in any way. It’s unknown if Coluans switch surnames when or if they get married and how it’s determined which surname a child inherits. It’s been vaguely implied but never confirmed that Coluan names are gender neutral.

im so sorry in advance bc this is a lot. but.
top 5 bands r loves
top 5 bands r hates
top 5 bands s loves
and top 5 bands s hates
hi omg no problem!! love talking about them love talking about music love talking about seventies music so this is great xx in regards to the bands they love, and particularly s, i generally imagine this changing depending on the era? as in the bands that he is into as a fourteen year old are not the bands he's into when he's twenty. so that will sort of affect my rankings xx this got very long! especially due to my long-winded and unnecessary explanations. so it's all going under the cut xx also i know it says bands but i interpreted that as just artists in general hope thats okay xx
top five bands that r loves
5. the kinks
4. small faces / harry nilsson.
3. the beach boys.
2. the beatles.
1. steely dan.
him!! my stuck-in-the-sixties boy!! the specific order isn't necessarily accurate, but these are the sort of groups/artists i imagine him liking--as well as special mentions to the velvet underground/bob dylan/donovan/joni mitchell/kate bush/pink floyd probably some of the beatles' solo careers in the seventies--e.g. wings/paul mccartney's ram/george harrison's all things must pass. i tend to imagine his tastes being more suited to the sixties than the seventies in general, though (think he'd prefer it to the glam + punk rock of the seventies although he may have liked some early bowie xx). i think he'd enjoy new wave in the late 70s/early 80s possibly more than he'd enjoy punk, but also he's spending that time being utterly depressed so i don't know how on-it he is in regards to following the latest cultural trends and movements.
top five bands that r hates
okay i'm not sure i have a ranking for this one--it's harder because i can't imagine him actively hating much. and i feel like if he didn't like a certain type of music he just wouldn't engage with it. but thinking about bands in the 70s i can't imagine him having an awful lot of time for your AC/DCs, ur aerosmiths, slade, kiss, led zeppelin, black sabbath...metal as a genre.
top five bands that s loves
5. rolling stones / sparks
4. new york dolls/velvet underground/t.rex
3. stranglers/modern lovers/the specials
2. sex pistols/ramones/buzzcocks
1. david bowie/roxy music
right i know this is a bit of a cop-out of a list. and the order once again doesn't really mean anything more than what came to mind first because honestly again it would all depend on the specific era/year you're talking about but. i've said before i imagine him moving from glam rock + proto-punk into punk + especially british punk as the seventies progresses...i do think artists like bowie and roxy music and t. rex would've had pretty big effects on him at a young age, and i think though he wouldn't have much time for most of the sixties the rolling stones might still be of interest to him. the thing is by the time he's old enough to get into glam rock its being going on for a bit, which is why the fact that he's around for the very start of punk would make it so exciting for him, because its something that belongs to his age group and its something he can actually get involved in. if he'd managed to stay out of prison for just a few more years i probably would've also included xtc (though he would've been around to enjoy drums and wires and black sea which are both good albums xx) but i think glam rock and punk are the main two genres for him.
top five bands that s hates
5. ABBA
4. the beegees
3. elton john
2. queen
1. the beatles
out of all four lists this was. probably easiest honestly although its less a ranking and more just a list as they came to mind but. i think he would enjoy hating the beatles--they're done, they're yesterday's news, they're old-fashioned and i really can't imagine any of their discography being of much interest to him personally. although he'd make allowances for how much r likes them. unlike r, i think s would sort of revel in being a bit of a hater (like me) so a lot of the rest of this list is just big seventies artists that while he would have been exposed to, he wouldn't have liked. i've talked b4 about the queen thing but in the interest of being thorough here i'll once again make my argument that he would not have liked queen xx if you think s liked queen its probably because he actually liked sparks instead. sparks sound like what i think a lot of people seem to think queen sound like. queen do not fit the rock n roll/punk rock image that he gets given a lot and while i absolutely love good old fashioned lover boy as much as the next person i do not think he did xx he was not a good old fashioned lover boy i promise you xx he was a cunt xx

Favorite album(s) or song(s)?
uhh my all-time favorite album is probably Favourite Worst Nightmares by Arctic Monkeys (with the exception of 'the bad thing,' which i always skip, i will never get sick of this album) and also Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge which I'm obligated to put bcos it rewired my brain in middle school. some favourite songs are Do Me a Favour, Spellbound, Boys on the Radio, and hmm. Dear God (by XTC) i think. also The Killing Moon but i've been a bit sick of it recently cos i listened to it too much :(
Favorite movie?
Donnie Darko. I like the big rabbit. Also Heathers and But I'm a Cheerleader are high up there.
Favorite fictional characters?
cass cain (shocker!) and tim and rose :) others: marcy wu (amphibia), stan uris and bev marsh (stephen king's it), sokka (atla), link (loz). there are So many. also i'm miffy's (the rabbit) biggest fan.
Favorite comics/books?
superman: for all seasons, batgirl 2000, batman: under the red hood, young justice, robin & batman 2021. also its not DC but little monsters 2022 was a really fun mini. my favorite novels are Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and the Great Gatsby (<- srry i think its so funny when rich people are miserable)

After seeing how David Sikela was tied to Magog in the World's Finest comic, it got me thinking about other characters who first showed up in the Kingdom Come universe so I wanted to ask, what do you think of Kara's daughter with Brainiac 5, XTC? Can there be more done with her? Can she be somewhat brought into the main DC universe similar to how Magog was? Or is she nothing more than just a one-off character?
She's mostly just a concept rather than an actual character at this point. I like the idea of her, and I've been won over on the Kara/Brainiac 5 romance recently, but first they would need to focus on the two of them dating. Kara is in no way ready to be a mom, nor does the Superfamily need another member just yet.

Heads, Rockers, Country fans, I come to praise Caesar…
… and to bury him, sadly. The Caesar in question is Mike Ross: the unchallenged and universally acknowledged* Grand Galactic Emperor Of Slide Guitar, and (without any of that ‘one of’ or ‘among’ equivocation nonsense) quite frankly the BEST writer and performer ‘on the scene’ currently. But like the saying goes about a prophet in his own land, it seems this particular scene has been led astray by false messiah after false messiah, and only worships golden cows and graven idols now, leaving Mike preaching in the wilderness somewhat.
So the declaration earlier his year of his intention to call a halt on his eight-year incarnation as The Mike Ross Band (to pursue other avenues and energies in pastures new) was not an enormous surprise, but still a major downer… That disappointment was brightened, if only slightly, by the announcement of a final release as MRB’s ‘last will and testament’.
The old cliché that nobody likes long goodbyes was doubtless coined by the leaver, not the leavee (who’d happily string things out as long as humanly possible…) Well that goes double for Plunger as regards the demise of MRB: thankfully that final record, the cryptically titled Electric Smoke, satisfies Plunger’s wish for a ‘long goodbye’: a double album lasting over an hour and a half… plenty of time for us to wallow in our misery! Except there’s no room for misery, as the twenty songs it contains are a vibrant, joyous, angry, defiant, bruising, uplifting, intriguing, grin-inducing valediction.
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the musical taste of the British public.**
The versatility and imagination that’s been the hallmark (and, Plunger suspects, the millstone round the neck career-wise) of Mike’s output is present in spades here, with nods to influences behind many of his previous releases as well as more out-of-left-field surprises, ranging from surf-spiced Californiana in Better Days to Broken Toy’s trippy 90s-Scousechedelica-meets-Page&Plant in 9/8 time, and from Thunderbird’s Western Swing to a Harrison-like ‘quality of Mersey’ in Too Many Parts.
There’s Raffertyish folk/country in Come Away’s duet (with Lindsey Bonnick of Brave Rival) featuring some exquisite slide playing; as echt an Edmunds/Lowe 50s-revival bop as you’ll hear in Harder Again; while the eloquent, emotive Landship drifts into proggier waters, with airily jangling guitar, and esoteric lyrics delivered with unusually precise pronunciation.
Southern flavours abound, whether in the gospel-tinged southern soul of Keep Going, the Skynyrdy barroom boogie of Magic Bullet or the Delaney & Bonnie belt of Tonight Tonight; harder, heavier fare in the Youngian fuzz-drenched grunge lope of Wasting Time and a balls-to-the-wall AC/DC rocker The Devil; and not forgetting some blues (but through an MTB filter) in Bus Blues - a half speed Roadhouse Blues-on-‘ludes dreamscape with a bludgeoning solo and laddish chorus, Sweet Wine’s 6/8 reverie, and the dub-slanted Doorsesque blues slink of Your Game.
If that sounds like it’s getting weird, just wait for the hallucinatory Unpaid Bill a trem-and-verb-washed 60s Psychic-Soul-P.I.-walks-the mean-streets theme à la John Barry; Song Thirteen’s unsettling tricksy-timed Damned-meets-The Associates-with-a-splash-of-B52s Art Rock; the Glam Metal In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida/Purple Haze-hybrid funeral march of One Man; and not least the XTC-pretending-to-be-Madness fairground haunted house spookiness of Mr Carter with its chorus in (fittingly) 13s!
Now, for some narrow-gauge, one-track “All I want is some blues” minds this kind of rock’n’roll chameleon shape-shifting might feel like their ears being violated with a jewelled musical kaleidoscope but for jamband fans like Plunger this is right up our, erm, street (maybe a US-style jamband should be the next career move?) and we can’t help but grin at the audacity of the transformations and at the consummate deftness with which he pulls them off - guitar styles, instrumentation, arrangements and even vocal pitch and timbres all bang-on-the-money genre-appropriate.
Without a lyric sheet we won’t claim to have caught every nuance, but it does sound like Mike may have a choice word or two for various ‘powers that be’ in all walks of life (no names, no pack drill from Plunger): skewering the high-ups, decrying the vapidity of modern life, and elegising the disappointments and crushed dreams of all us. And the cryptic title? Not a scooby I’m afraid, but it does crop up in the closing bars of the shoutalong Irish-boozer waltz-time folk of My Friend, the boisterous if bellicose full stop to a cracking double album.
“Dave can do anything, oh he’s great, he really is…” ***
As always the performances are Premiership level, and (apart from Darren Lee’s stalwart drumming and the aforementioned Lindsey) they’re all Mike: bass; electric piano and organ; the CSN-level harmonies… And of course the guitar - particularly (but not restricted to) slide - is exquisite: the work on Magic Bullet is a fucking masterclass in ‘How To Play Southern Slide Properly’ that should be required homework for guitarists across the country, but it’s all sublime, the harmonising leads and noodles, the twangsome rock’n’rollery, the pulverising riffing, THE TONE… all of it!
Probably best to call a halt before it all gets too “POW! Up pops my fairy godmother” [Too late, Ed.], but suffice to say the very existence of Electric Smoke as a “So long and thanks for all the fish” is both an impressive capstone to an unsurpassed body of work over the last eight years and a pretty sad indictment of a scene that’s about to lose its best and most creative songwriter/artist…  (Just as a for instance, the track Tonight Tonight, was originally written, recorded and released as a single in three hours as a “You can do better than that, guys” riposte to the Black Crowes own single - can your favourite band do that? No, they can’t. Shut up.)
Si monumentum requiris, praestinate****
Electric Smoke is only available as a double 180gm vinyl album in splatter-green (with gatefold sleeve featuring cover art by Chris 'Sick' Moore) in a limited edition of 100 pieces. Available to pre-order now (shipping December 2024) from Mike’s website here: https://mikerossmusic.bigcartel.com/product/electric-smoke-vinyl
An exclusive official pre-launch listening party will be held on Zoom on 24th September, tickets available via the Facebook event page here:
- he must be, we said so https://tmblr.co/Zc96bkcAsKVeSi00
** - as PT Barnum and HL Mencken never said…

Also, what's the deal with Umbrellaspectre anyways? I've seen her around and DC openly flirting with her... is what I'm thinking true?
Well, I can't actually speak on anything. Rach unfortunately is also the only person I feel actually sorry for. I do genuinely still love her and I'm so sorry that I have to drag her into this, but I gave her two years to change her mind. I knew it wouldn't, she picked DC and he isolated her on purpose to get her away from her family and friends. She grew up Back East and moved to TX and DC got his hooks into her. He convinced her to move out to California (her studio is about 5 minutes away from DC Douglas's downtown studio city apartment) and despite her barely being able to survive. He did that with Peyton (the other girl he's doxxing) who decided against it (thank god) and then his former girlfriend who I will not be naming under any circumstances was also brought out to California, but that time from Florida. (Victor was actually very close friends with her at the time!!!) Not LA, but another college nearby so they could visit. That girlfriend also the one that he brought out during Sabaku Con 2015 explicitly so we could have xtc and go to strip clubs and have a threesome. At the Erotic Fanfic panel at Sabaku in 2015 someone asked what was bad for him. He pointed to me and his GF at the time in the second row and said, "Well she's here right now!"

and synecdoche???? Let me just say he's not the only one with that as a tattoo. Makes me think of the time he pressured me to get his signature on my bewb after he signed it in the above picture...

J. Robbins (Kreative Kontrol Interview)
Tumblr media
For the complete interview click here
Notes by Paula Beltran. I had the chance to get swept away by the Discord community since my friend Charles, a HarDCore pioneer, did not stop talking about his concert experiences back in the day. We even watched Salad Days together with his wife Claudia who is also a dear friend of mine back in their Arlington home (Charles has it been that long?). I've always been attracted to that level of mysterious coolness. Turns out they are! Here are my notes from the interview. Edited in order to be published here. They highlight life philosophies and fun fact about J. Robbins. Good stuff.

New record on DISCHORD CHECK IT OUT!
J. Robbin picks dead eyed god as recommendation
He wrote it very easily and he is proud of himself because of that. More about J. Robbins: "J. Robbins has been the singer/guitarist and principal songwriter in several DC-and-Baltimore-area post-punk rock bands since the late 1980s, most notably Jawbox, Burning Airlines, and Channels. He is also owner and operator of the Magpie Cage recording studio in Baltimore MD."

Album time. Last time left off on Nirvana, so picking up from there is Apple Venus Volume 1 by XTC. I really enjoyed the last XTC album I got, but this one was faded from my memory entirely. I gave it a 3/5, and that seems right for something I was able to forget that easily.
Then we have L'Eau Rouge by The Young Gods. I didn't know I need a French metal album in my life, but this fucking slaps. You should listen to it. The website has this at an average rating of 2.34/5, and frankly fuck that this album is good. 4/5.
Next was Talking Book by Stevie Wonder. Now, this album started by whammying me with Walgreens PTSD with "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", but also has "Superstition" on it and is generally great. So, we'll say one point off for the trauma bomb for a 4/5.
Next up, Highway to Hell by AC/DC. And like, yeah no shit it's good. AC/DC fucking rules. 5/5.
Then was Live / Dead by The Grateful Dead. It's very boring. Painfully boring. If I had died of boredom listening to this, I would have in fact been grateful. 2/5.
After that, Talk Talk Talk by The Psychadelic Furs. This was cool but not super remarkable. If you like indie rock stuff, give it a look but I didn't love it. 3/5
At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash. I liked the San Quentin prison album better, but this is still really good. Listen to both. 4/5 on this. (San Quentin was a 5/5 to me, if you're curious.)
Phrenology by The Roots. This one didn't stick well in my brain, but at least I remember liking it. 4/5
Okay. Listen. I've determined I really don't like David Bowie that much, or this album The Next Day. I'm sorry. He's ridiculously good when he's good, but his music just doesn't land for me usually. Plus side, unlike a lot of his albums this one doesn't end on a meandering 20 minutes of instrumentals. This may be a downside if you like those songs way more than I do, though. 3/5
Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout. This album was actually a ton of fun. Just some good rock and roll that I'm guessing you probably haven't already heard. 5/5
Faust IV by Faust. It's boring. 3/5
Vanishing Point by Primal Scream. It sounds like the background track to a 90s action movie's obligatory club scene. If that sounds good to you, you should ABSOLUTELY listen to this. If not, skip it. 3/5
So Much For the City by The Thrills. It's EXTREMELY boring. 2/5
And today we have Whatever by Aimee Mann. It's pretty good. Had a couple songs I enjoyed a bunch, "Fifty Years After The Fair" and "Say Anything." It's very 90s. 4/5
