Kath Bloom "Leaving Things"
A few Sundays ago, my friend Fred Knittel and I had the pleasure of recording this singer-songwriter from the 1970s New England folk scene for his XPN2 show, Folkadelphia. Kath performed in sparse arrangements, simple and potent, playing off of fillder Tom Hanford, and the resulting five-song session was pure magic. This number is Fred's favorite of the bunch, but you can hear the entire thing (four other songs of equal measure) this Sunday, May 6, at 3 p.m. during Folkadelphia on XPN2.

You can pretend you're all cool and don't want to hear another Shins review (it's fine, I'd do the same) but I'm going to write about 'Simple Song' anyway. Yes, I heard it a long time ago, too. You're reading the words of Sleepyhead's first listener--and if you think that's not impressive, you're very wrong. Sorry, sorry. The Shins. For all my talk, I haven't heard all of Port of Morrow, and I scoffed when I saw they were headlining Sweetlife, but then I thought a bit more about the songs these guys have given us. Gems like 'So Says I,' 'Sleeping Lessons,' and 'Saint Simon' are only a few. These are quality songs, people. Yes, the novelty of the Shins has long worn away. They form the pillars of indie rock, and liking them doesn't make you terribly avante garde. They don't even have imported kitsch like Belle and Sebastian or someone. HOWEVER. I think they represent quality indie stripped of all its distractions. These guys make quality music--the sound is honest rock, and the lyrics are like well executed poetry. They're intellectual without being drippily literary (*cough Decembrists cough*). In a word, the Shins are lasting. The classics you'll listen to for years. So what about 'Simple Song'? When I first heard it, I was unimpressed. Why? It wasn't Shins-y to me. Then I kept hearing it on the radio rotation (xpn2) and I decided it was rocking pretty hard. It certainly has an umph that's new for them. Now, though, I'm leaning more toward my initial assessment. If this weren't a Shins song, I would love it. I do love it, but not in a Shins way. The guitars are oddly 70s/80s and I just think it sounds a bit cheap next to their other songs. I like it, I do, but it's the Shins coasting to me. They made themselves a bread and water staple of indie rock, and now I think they might be resting a bit on their laurels, erring on the easy pop side. It's the Coldplay pattern all over again--I don't want to get any flack for mentioning Coldplay. When the Shins put their name on a song, it means a lot. I just hope it continues to. Too many bands aren't keeping up with themselves. See what I'm saying?
I'd actually like some reader feedback on this.

While listening to the aforementioned radio show, which is called XPN2, One of the DJ's did an interview with a girl whom I'm assuming is a solo act and goes by the name A Stick and A Stone. I would have liked to post some of her music on here but I'm having trouble finding it. I was very impressed with how beautiful the music she made on the show was.
