NGL I feel that people who are thinking the Switch 2 might either stumble at launch like the 3DS did or outright flop like the Wii U because 'it's expensive' either weren't around for those consoles, were children (so they weren't paying attention to this shit), or just forgot.

(WARNING LONG POST SORRY)

I am not saying that there is no chance for the Switch 2 to stumble or even flop, but the 3DS and Wii U didn't face the issues they did because 'they were expensive'.

The 3DS stumbled at launch not because it was $250 ($80 more than the most expensive DS model, the DSi XL) but because it had no games that would encourage people to buy it, like I live in North America and here are all of Nintendo's launch titles for the 3DS here:

Nintendogs + Cats

Pilotwings Resort

Steel Diver

(Also I guess AR Games, Face Raiders, and StreetPass Mii Plaza if you count the built-in simple games to show off some of the 3DS features but I wouldn't since, y'know, those were just built-in to the system)

But what about third-parties, what did they have? Well they had:

Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D

LEGO Star Wars III: The clone Wars

Madden NFL Football

To be clear here: A mediocre launch lineup is not inherently enough to make the 3DS stumble and, in fact, the 3DS did sell decently at first because it was selling to the hardcore fans, the people who would buy the console no matter what. But you need to sell to more than just that and a good way to do that with a mediocre launch lineup is to get more games during the launch window (first few months).

Nintendo...didn't.

Those launch games Nintendo put out when the 3DS launched here in North America on 27 March 2011? Y'all wanna know when the next Nintendo published title came out on the system and what that game was?

3D Classics: Excitebike, released digitally on 6 June 2011. Yeah the next game Nintendo published was a port of an NES game from 1984 that was a launch title for the eShop (YES THE NINTENDO ESHOP LITERALLY DID NOT EXIST ON THE 3DS UNTIL A FEW MONTHS AFTER LAUNCH).

If you discount that, their next actual physical retail game was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on 19 June 2011. Sure, a remake of one of the greatest video games of all time with improved graphics and now on a handheld, that's great. But y'know...first physical Nintendo game released on the platform (in North America) since launch.

Their next physical game was Star Fox 64 3D released in September.

And there really weren't a lot of third-party games to pick up the slack either. Don't get me wrong, there were third-party games being released, of course, but there weren't any MUST GRAB titles for the average customer that would make them go 'Oh Hell yeah, I gotta get me a 3DS'.

Now, let's compare that to the Switch 2, sure I'll admit that (at least right now) the only two games Nintendo is releasing at launch on the Switch 2 are Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour and Mario Kart World but uhh

Mario Kart is one of the most successful video game franchises there is. Mario Kart World completely blows the entirety of Nintendo's 3DS launch titles out of the water.

'Oh but Viola, it's $80' Yeah that's true, but only if you don't go for the digital bundle where it costs $50 instead and I just about guarantee that - unless you don't like Mario Kart - most people are gonna go for that version of the Switch 2. (Honestly even if it weren't $80 separately why wouldn't you, when buying a new system, go for the bundle that includes a game?) That's what I'm going for, myself.

There's a lot more interesting third-party games at launch (and during the launch windows too) to get people's attention.

Now let's talk about the Wii U and why it flopped and the reasons why the Wii U flopped are much more simpler than 'the reasons why the 3DS stumbled and Nintendo had to cut the price to $180 a few months after launch'.

The Wii U flopped because of incredibly poor marketing and tying its entire identity to a fad that had already ended.

Remember: when the Wii U was first shown off at E3 2011, the entire reveal trailer was focused on the GamePad (or, as the trailer called it 'the New Controller'). The actual Wii U console was only ever shown in the background by the TV.

Said reveal trailer also showed people using Wii Remotes, the Wii Balance Board, the Wii Zapper with the 'New Controller' while playing things like a New Super Mario Bros game, a Wii Sports game, and a Wii Fit game using the 'New Controller'.

And then at the end of the trailer, you just had the text 'Coming to your living room in 2012' and then the Wii U logo.

Now if you saw all of that: a trailer heavily promoting 'the New Controller', showing it being used with the controllers and accessories available on the Wii, playing games that very much look like Wii games, and at the end revealed that this thing was called the Wii U - what would you assume Nintendo was revealing here:

A brand new console and the successor to the Wii

A new controller for the Wii U

Well if you said option 1, you're smarter than gaming enthusiasts and games journalists because even they were confused if this was a new console or just a new controller for the Wii, making Nintendo clarify later that same day that 'This is a new console'. That's not a good thing, you shouldn't have to clarify to the press that what you've just announced is your next console because they don't know if it is or not.

And further, virtually all of Nintendo's marketing and presentations of the Wii U prior to its launch heavily focused on the GamePad so it wasn't just a 'Oh the initial reveal trailer was a bit bad and Nintendo could easily fix it because, y'know the Wii U was revealed at E3 2011 and it didn't come out till late 2012' situation here. It was everything until launch could have made consumers confused about if this was a new console or just a new accessory for the Wii (Bill Trinen himself admitted this after launch).

Let's talk about the second part 'tying its entire identity to a fad that had already ended'. Obviously the Wii U, by its very name, was trying to continue the success and popularity of the Wii. The Wii! Nintendo's most successful home console at the time and a massive cultural phenomenon, what could go wrong? Obviously if you have such a successful console, you'd want your successor to continue to use the established and popular brand name, right?

Well...Wii sales had peaked in 2009 and sales had begun to decline in 2010, where they were 21% lower than the previous year. The reason for this decline was because of the introduction of the PlayStation Move and Kinect and people were just losing interest in the whole Wii fad.

Wii sales continued to decline into 2011 as more and more third-party developers stopped developing games for it due to its underpowered and non-standard hardware in comparison to the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC and they kept on declining into 2012 as well.

Remember - they announced the Wii U in 2011 and released it in 2012. They announced and launched this console, that was designed in both name and features to continue the success of the Wii, when people didn't give a damn about the Wii anymore.

Sometimes you'll see people say that 'They should have called it the Wii 2 so no one would be confused by the name' and yeah, calling it the Wii 2 would have made it clear it was a new console. But that wouldn't have changed the fact that people were not interested in the Wii anymore by the time it was announced and came out.

But contrast that to the Switch 2:

The name alone makes it blatantly obvious that 'THIS IS THE SUCCESSOR TO THE SWITCH' and not new add-ons for the original (even while retaining the original's successful gimmick of switching)

The Switch is still a very popular and successful system. They're not announcing and releasing this system a few years after Switch sales peaked and declined and people were losing interest in the whole Switch concept.

(Of course you do get the weirdos who think that things like the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs are 'competition' for the Switch 2 and are seriously going to challenge the Switch 2 in the market even though those are all niche devices aimed at enthusiasts and the best-selling PC handheld, the Steam Deck, is estimated to have sold only about 4 million units and are absolutely not even on the radar of mainstream customers)

There are other reasons why the Wii U flopped and the 3DS stumbled at a bit as well, like the game droughts because game development had gotten too expensive for Nintendo to reasonably support two separate platforms like they had been doing since the days of the Game Boy and NES. That stopped being a thing after the Wii and DS era, to be honest.
