Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 3 Episode 1 - The Xindi

The season opens with a council of unknown aliens, discussing the Enterprise approaching. There are a few species here, so I can't say which ones are the Xindi. And these are some of the most alien aliens that I've seen from Trek so far. We've go an insect dude, a couple mermaid things. They've clearly upped the alien effects budget this season. Nice! Also, a bit upset they've changed the theme slightly, this remix isn't having the same effect on me.

Seeing Hoshi interact with the new military team aboard Enterprise was fun, and I love the friction between them and Enterprise's security team, with neither party trusting each other to do the Job right.

Phlox breaking down the DNA of the Xindi corpse so we can find out more about the species was great. With a bit more DNA from another sample, we find out that the Xindi are multiple closely related species. Also, apparently, Trip is still grieving his sister, and is having trouble sleeping, so Phlox has asked T'Pol to help him out with some Vulcan Techniques.

Our main goal in this episode, is to pick up a Xindi from a mining Planet, and get co-ordinates to the Xindi homeworld. Specifically, from a slaver who deals in liquid platinum. We don't find out much about the slaver, but he is beautifully intimidating. Unfortunately, he dies in the escape, but as he died, he did manage to give co-ordinates to Phlox. The co-ordinates are however, a trap. A huge Debris field. A Debris field that used to be a planet 150 years ago.

Interestingly, this episode's plot finishes up with about 10 minutes of runtime left, leaving us to have some down-time scenes, specifically the aforementioned Vulcan Technique scene with Trip and T'Pol.

I'm a bit disappointed that the extent of Weird Unnatural physic's stuff we've seen so far is some weird gravity in the cargo bay, but hopefully they'll show something wilder sooner than later. I'm not expecting them to go full Doctor Who: Zagreus, but the set up of this region of space is too good to waste.

The cinematography on this one is great, there is a lot of interesting camera work, and some really good moving shots. On a technical level, this season is looking to be a really good step up. I enjoyed myself here.

What’s in a Name? [Drabble]

Earth. That shining jewel she had once coveted for so long, the last set of Sailor Crystals to be collected, besides those insignificant ones from the Kinmokusei System, floated before her in the endless void of space, held in its place by the pull of the sun. Sol, she remembered their star was called. Could she even remember the name of her planet? Her system? Her star? 

It didn’t matter anyway. She knew she could never return, even if she remembered, she had never belonged there. She had vague memories, ones she had long repressed, of abuse and poverty before her Sailor Crystal had awakened. She had left that world behind in search of a better one and in doing so found Chaos, who had led her down a path of destruction. 

Sighing heavily, she ran a hand through her hair and rid herself of those thoughts. She had long since abandoned the ornate headdress, thinking it made her less intimidating. She even added a cape, the stylistic change after her rebirth just felt...right.

Feeling she had put this off long enough, Sailor Galaxia squared her shoulders and teleported down to Earth, specifically to Tokyo. She let her armor fade, wearing the simple white dress she was fond of. She felt the eyes of the human men, and some women, on her as she wandered the streets, taking in the feel of the city. She suppressed a sneer and walked with purpose, even if she really had none. Earth was the last stop on her ‘Redemption Tour’ as Sailor Mermaid had affectionately called it.

She had visited the planets of her former Animamates first. Visiting them in the order they had fallen. She had offered Lethe and Mnemosyne the chance to travel with her but they had decided to stay on their own worlds and find a way to bring peace in their own way. She had made such an offer to her false Senshi after ensuring their resurrection but they had all refused, and she held no ill will for their decision. She had lied to them, made empty promises she never had the intention or power to keep. 

Galaxia lost in her thoughts, came to a stop in a park. She observed a happy couple, the woman with short red hair, and the man with long auburn hair and simply let them be, continuing on her way. The couple however, had noticed her, and the man sensed what she was and sent a message to someone.

The wandering senshi came to a stop at the edge of a lake, looking out over the water. It was here, much later, when Sailor Moon, in her civilian guise, found her. “Sailor Galaxia?” She asked tentatively, as if she wasn’t sure the woman before her truly was who Sailor Moon thought she was.

Galaxia turned, a tired smile on her face, “Hello Sailor Moon. It’s been a while.”

Usagi smiled in return and came to stand beside the older woman. “It has. What brings you back to Earth?”

“It’s done, what I set out to do,” Galaxia was looking at the lake once more. “I have helped to restore all that I destroyed.”

Usagi’s eyes lit up, “That’s wonderful,” She said excitedly but then her face fell. “But why didn’t you ask for help. I would have gladly used the Silver Crystal to help.”

Galaxia turned to look at Usagi, a small smile on her lips, sadness in her golden eyes. “This was something I had to do alone. I restored the planets of the Animamates first, then Kinmokusei, then I traveled across the galaxy, restoring the worst damage first. But there were some places I could not help.” 

She lifted her hand, which had been resting at her side, she opened her palm and five tiny Sailor Crystals appeared, blossoming from golden flowers. “One Senshi...her planet was ravaged by war the moment she returned, their cycle of reincarnation was broken. I tried to help, but there was nothing I could do. She shattered her own Sailor Crystal into five pieces, in the hopes that one day, they would mature, and the remaining members of the cycle would each have their own Sailor Senshi.” She closed her hand and the tiny Crystals disappeared.

Usagi put her hands over her mouth, tears welling in her eyes, “Just like Elpis...before she became Dreamer and the Sailor Quartet....”

Galaxia nodded sadly. “It will take generations before Xindi is ready for Sailor Senshi again. I pray they find their peace,” She looked up to the sky, but since it was still daylight, the only visible star was Sol.

“You did what you could,” Usagi put a hand on Galaxia’s arm. A few more moments of silence passed before Usagi asked, “I’m curious, and you don’t have to answer if it will make you sad.”

“What is it Sailor Moon?” Galaxia askew curiously.

“What about your own planet? Did you go back and help them too?” She asked.

Galaxia froze, staring at Usagi like she had grown a third eye. Finally, she cleared her throat and looked back out at the lake. “No,” She answered simply. “I only have vague memories of the place, but none of them are pleasant, I never wished to return, even before I met Chaos. Whatever my home was, it was never a place for me. It was never my home.”

Usagi frowned, “I’m sure it wasn’t that...bad...” Usagi looked apologetic at Galaxia’s sharp glare.

The wandering soldier sighed, “I apologize Sailor Moon, I would simply rather forget the place of my birth and be done. I never grew up with the kind of love and support that you did. I was alone, unwanted, impoverished and abused. I never had any sort of self worth until I gained the power of the Sapphire Crystal.” She looked down at her hand and the broach now within it.

Much to the surprise of Galaxia, Usagi stepped up beside her and put her arms around Galaxia, giving her a comforting hug. “Well. You have it now. Me and the other Sailor Senshi of this planet, we’ve already forgiven you for everything and we’re willing to give you a home here. You can have a place to belong.” Usagi looked up at her with that warm, caring smile that had infuriated her so long ago, now it just filled her with shame.

“I...I don’t deserve your kindness Sailor Moon...” Galaxia looked away, trying to hide her blush behind her long golden red hair.

“U-sa-gi,” Usagi pronounced her own name with a smile. “My name is Usagi. I am Usagi first, Sailor Moon second, and Serenity last.”

“Usagi...” Galaxia tested the name on her tongue and couldn’t help but smile. Of course, such a shining, beautiful young woman would have such a name.

Usagi stepped back, but still held one of Galaxia’s hands. “That’s better,” She beamed, “Now, what do I call you?” She tilted her head, looking at Galaxia, “I’d rather not call you ‘Galaxia’ all the time. It just seems...too formal,” Usagi scrunched her face, clearly not liking the idea.

Galaxia blinked. It was something she hadn’t considered in a long time. Ever since her Crystal had awakened, she had never been anything other than ‘Galaxia’. Rather than dredge up old memories that she would rather forget, Galaxia simply looked at Usagi and told her, “I don’t remember, ever since my awakening as a Sailor Senshi, I have always been ‘Galaxia’. I don’t think I could remember my birth name if I tried.”

Letting go of Galaxia’s hand, Usagi put her hands on her hips, pouting. “Well, that just won’t do!” She snapped her fingers, “I know! Why don’t I have you a new name?”

Again, Galaxia blinked at the younger woman, “A...new name...?” She had been clinging to her identity as Galaxia for so long, she wasn’t sure what a new name was supposed to do.

“Yeah! Something like.....” Usagi sat on the nearby bench, crossing one leg over the other, placing her chin in her hand and resting her elbow on her leg. She was in such a deep concentration that Galaxia swore she saw smoke coming out of the blonde’s ears. She had to admit It was rather endearing.

Finally, Usagi jumped up, pointing her finger in the air with a look of triumph on her face, as if she had just discovered the cure for cancer. “Gingano Hikari!” She pointed to Galaxia. “I hereby name you Gingano Hikari!”

“Gingano...Hikari...” Galaxia translated the words and her cheeks became as red as the tip of her hair. “Sail--Usagi...I do not deserve such an honorable name.”

“Of course you do!” Usagi insisted, grabbing both of Galaxia’s hands with hers. “You may have caused all of that destruction, but you helped to fix it too. You have done more than you needed to to make up for everything. You’ve more than earned it.”

Galaxia looked down, unsure what to say until finally she whispered, “Thank you, Usagi-sama.”

Usagi smiled and pulled Galaxia into another hug, “You don’t need to thank me. You are a Sailor Guardian, a sister, a friend. And I would be honored if you stayed on Earth for a bit longer, so we can get to know each other as proper friends Hikari-chan,” Usagi smiled up at her.

A smile slowly spread across her face, a true genuine smile, full of warmth, hope, love. “It would be my honor Usagi.”

Usagi beamed and pulled away, keeping Galaxia’s hand in hers as she led her out of the park, “First thing’s first: Shopping. While that dress is cute, if you wanna stay on Earth you gotta look the part.”

For the first time in what felt like centuries, Sailor Galaxia let out a genuine, happy laugh.
