15 years since Ōban Star-Racers A French/Japanese Anime
The year is 2007, you are a huge Star Wars fan who is also starting to watch their first few anime. One day, as usual, you turn on your tv in order to watch Jetix, the best cartoon channel at the time, however, this time you are not greeted with the usual “Ying Yang Yo!”, “Pucca” or “Fairly Odd Parents”, instead, an insanely stylish and colorful ad comes on screen with a really exciting dubbed narration and two ships racing one another on a strange planet in the purest style of pod racing in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”. “Oban Star-Racers”, a brand-new show was about to start, and you are more than ready.

(Actual south American dubbed ad with really bad quality)

(Same ad but in the English version with good quality)
This French-Japanese anime created by Sav! The World Productions is a very rare example of a successful artistic collaboration between Japan and the West. The plot tells a story set in the year 2082, the main character, Eva Wei, is a fifteen-year-old girl whose mother died in a terrible accident while she was young. Eva is determined to reunite with his father, a famous race manager who sent her off to a boarding school.
As they finally meet, Eva realizes that his father doesn’t even recognize her because of how much time has passed since they last saw each other. In that moment, Eva decides to change her name to Molly in order to hide his identity and stay close to his father. Under this premise, Eva’s destiny becomes intertwined with the fate of humanity, as she boards the spaceship that will take them to the planet Alwas, where they will take part of a competition known as the Great Race of Oban, an interplanetary race where the grand prize is any wish that you desire.
Not only the animation is stunningly beautiful, but character's art style was some of the most eye catching and creative designs I had seen being broadcasted on the channel. I also remember the dub being astonishingly good. To my surprise, while investigating a bit to make this post, I discovered that the South American Spanish dub was done here in Chile! Including actresses like Ximena Marchant who voiced Toph in the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, also, Jordan, Eva’s sidequick, was voice by Sergio Aliaga, who also voiced Sokka in Avatar.
Sadly, as much as I enjoyed Oban Star-Racers, I have no recollection of watching the ending, as I am pretty sure we stopped using cable tv service at the time, and when I had the chance to watch cartoons on tv once again, Jetix was long gone…
Finding the series online is not that complicated, however, you need to have in mind that the quality won’t be the best. Luckily, a kickstarter campaign was made this year for the 15th anniversary of the series by the creators of Oban, the objective being to celebrate the series and its fanbase by releasing a Blu-Ray version of the show including all 11 featured dubbed languages (Including the Chilean dub!) while also expanding the universe of Oban with some sequels and spin off projects that have been on the mind of the creators since the very beginning.
All the stretch goals have been successfully completed, and we only have to wait for the official release of the set in October of this year. If you want to cooperate and receive a copy of the series or read more about the anniversary project you are free to do so in this link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/savtheworld/oban-star-racers-15th-anniversay-bluray?lang=es
Lastly, I will leave the link to the wonderful opening for the show, I know it will make some of you immediately go and take a look at the full series.

This is my fourth and last post for the semester, although I might post a fifth one, an extended version of one of my five paragraph essays.
I hope you enjoyed or tried some of the recommendations I did here! I had a lot of fun writing them all. Take care!
