5 notes on Xie Lian and maybe a note more
omg this took so long i'll proofread in the morning. written in chinese originally, under "read more". annotations on [google docs] with translations to come because there are too many.
(if you do chinese, skip to the cut! it is way better than the translation cri.)
it is fortunate that their ship name is coined Hualian and not Hua-xie. The flower withers, the petals fall. Yet there is a time for blossoms, a time for withers — if huaxie it really is, still it is befitting of their eight hundred years of separations and reencounters.
Heavenly flowers empathise and shed mercy; entire rivers and cities bow down in gratitude.
Whence the body dwells incessant the heart thrives beyond, content.
o n e .
He was pierced by a hundred swords. Thereafter, he offered to be pierced again. The nightly terrors that prowl wild in his dreams: he was ready to embrace it once more. The heart pierces, and yet it trembles.
t w o.
A thought experiment: if Wuming didn't die for Xie Lian at the rematerialisation of the hundred swords, would Xie Lian have accepted his second ascension?
The world is a wretched sea. Mortals, misery. Some people carry with them the weight of conscience, atlas or abyss on their shoulders as they edge stepwise towards the heavenly skies, for they know that the higher they go, the more power they wield in their hands to change the course of the stars. Lin Shu stands on the shoulders of legacy and demarcates Conscience on the ground. He steps into the encirclement he has carved: he holds himself hostage and falls into the nether realms of the incessant inferno, subject to an unyielding pursuit for bygone honours and nobility in store. It takes courage, to live like this.
But it also takes another kind of courage, to not live like this. Xie Lian wasn’t like Lin Shu. Dethroned, mortalised, buried and stripped of power and grace, he wandered on earth for eight hundred years. He did not save the destitute mortals, desolate and crying for help. He did not bestow on them the bountiful blessings, as what a god could do. The did-not-do’s — it takes in another courage to be him.
t h r e e.
Had Xie Lian really collected scraps these eight hundred years? To deny would be an injury to his memoir, but there is more to that. He served as the high priest of a kingdom, a general to an army; through the grapevine, the crown prince in white had played many roles on the stage of life, a hundred years here in the role of one, and a hundred from forth in the robes of another. In time, the tales of the one who inspired rose and ebbed, yet the legacies remain. He didn’t protect the people with his deified status, yet what endures is his compassion and mercy. In the rain, the figure clad in white walks past the world in joy and tears and touches the hearts he passes — this was his salvation, and his ascension to godhood.
f o u r.
At his second banishment, Xie Lian implores Jun Wu to assuage him of his merit and luck. Mortals light incense in exchange for blessings in supplication. Xie Lian disperses Fortune to earth instead, and disassembles Divinity for the common people to carve out blessings of their own lives.
The works of one cannot salvage the teetering constructs of a foundering world. The world is a tapestry of woven histories; people save the people as the tales unfurl. The stitches tangling in a sea of light, blessed faces lit up in the night by the millions of lanterns adorning the households of the earth, keeping it bright as stars in the sky. And it was so, what Xie Lian and Hua Cheng did.
f i v e.
The sword nears his neck: he is unfazed. The tenderness and gentleness of the noble spirit endures, staid as the meekness of nephrite jade. In the vicissitudes of temperaments, he sits, blasé; he does not concern himself with the triumphs and setbacks of life.
Clouds and storms wash across the world as he continues, with eased smiles and casual dialogue.
It is the most pitiable thing, of all in the world, gazing upon one who smiles placid in face of abject misery. He laughs in his affliction, yet is there such a thing, to be okay in utter wretchedness?
Fleeting moments of forlornness and joy all condensed in the time of a single gaze: his experiences refine him into a jade of the heart. The days of the ingenuous youth awash in ages past, gone were the luckiest teen of the kingdom, but the pureness in the eyes behind the sheaths of pain remain.
— I’m used to it, it matters no more;
who is there in this race with him but the immutable laws of nature in the crescent moon and wind?
The splendour surges, the crowds fete, the splendour falls — in the desert there is none: there is no glass of water waiting at your salvation. Dust and silt fork at each’s turn of fate; flies shovel across the path towards their better destinies. So long as one has feelings, has desires, how could one be truly free? The flower remains. The vista is unchanged. Yet the splendorous tower — the radiant memories of the past — bygones — and still he says that although the body dwells incessant, the heart thrives content. Where, pray, is the fount of the utopian peach blossom? How so, that the heart is at peace, in face of all this?
Yet he is well. His heart at peace. Where the heart lies, the peach blossoms spring.
+ 1
Xie Lian is this person, as such. Though the spring of the peach blossoms have long since dwindled, he hopes, towards.

Heavenly flowers empathise and shed mercy; entire rivers and cities bow down in gratitude.
Whence the body dwells incessant the heart thrives beyond, content.
Full annotations found here. Untranslated for now because there are simply too many; I suggest copying and pasting into the browser if you are interested in the poetry and verses cited. Many of them are not used as per their original meaning, however, so it is 99% on me if you caught the reference but did not understand it.
Anyhow, a note on the two most important allusions, because there is value in such:
[1] 身在无间,心在桃源。Whence the body dwells incessant, the heart thrives beyond, content.
A suggested translation of "Body in abyss, heart in paradise" because I vehemently abhor the official tl.
Incessant hints to the nirvana of buddhism. I didn't play with the idea of using paradise like in John Milton's poem to encapsulate the utopian ideals of Jin dynasty Tao Yuanming's Taoist Peach Blossom Spring visions. In Tao's essay he expresses the notion "I can live in a peaceful provincial paradise where the peach blossoms spring and forget about worldly matters", which is not exactly the biblical Eden. Probably owing to the idea that Xie Lian never actively sought out an extraterrestrial, heavenly, peach-blossom-spring paradise, I did not translate it literally here but figuratively, though opinion probably divides on this one.
Extreme liberties taken. Li Qingzhao wrote the first poem from the perspective of a lover. She sits at her own chambers reminiscing about her lost lover. This in turn was alluding to Feng Yansi's poem. Both works reference a tower/chamber where two mythical lovers spent their time at before ascension. As such, this phrase denotes here something unattainable from past memories and someone locked in perpetuum, in stasis, waiting for something to come.
In relation to this line on the chamber/tower by Li Qingzhao, a direct allusion to Tao Yuanming's peach blossom utopia was also alluded to in Li's poem in the antecedent line, despite both being used to speak of romance and not sociopolitical utopian ideals. The sleep-deprived me thus thought it "apt" to cite both lines in the writing to express Xie Lian's longing for the peach blossom paradise, despite said paradise being no longer extant on Earth, and him being in incessant hell. The peach blossoms in question tie in with mxtx's allusion of the peach blossom spring in tgcf's famous quotation; thus explains the reason for all the convoluted quoting.
this much for now. I hope something makes sense, at least. The english version is very, very figurative since I realised the chinese version was nigh impossible to literally translate without dedicating a relatively great amount of time to it. I don't know how this will be received at all, but why hi, and hope it is something at least xD

Once, the emperor of heaven saw that his troublesome successor had what he had always desired so dearly. To teach him a priceless lesson, he took it for himself.
Hua Cheng faithfully serves the god who saved him as a child— the one he has worshiped for 800 years— the one to whom he gifted his ashes: The Heavenly Emperor, Jun Wu.

lay me gently in the cold dark earth by drifloon
Sometimes, Xie Lian wishes Hua Cheng would call him by his name, would shorten the distance between them. Sometimes, he wishes not to be His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Xian Le nor the Flower Crown Martial God, but Hua Cheng will never let them stand on equal footing. Hua Cheng believes Xie Lian to be his god, so far above him he’s nigh untouchable, but Xie Lian knows the truth. Hua Cheng is the one whose power and strength shines through in each calculated movement, who has conquered every obstacle in his path, who is feared and revered across all three realms for his tenacity. Hua Cheng was born of blood and pain and sorrow, yet there is childish glee in the grins he shoots Xie Lian, and the way he takes Xie Lian’s hands contains genuine excitement at the prospect of existence.
Xie Lian is tired, and he is old, and he is weak. Every evening Hua Cheng is away, he digs a hole, and he keeps it a secret, because he knows Hua Cheng would recognise it for what it is.

Never the one to drag things or to beat around the bushes, the Ghost King had no patience for mortals or heavenly officials unless it was Xie Lian in question. But...this time he will make an exception. Why? Who can tell?? Who could explain it, his behavior was always unpredictable depending heavily on his mood. A child born under the Star of Solitude, destined to doom everyone around himself.
But now there is a new opportunity, a new adventure brewing in the land of the rising sun and he won't miss it. Once again he changed his physical appearance. Now instead of a grown man, Sakura was next to a boy, some eighteen years old. A bit taller than her with hair tied in a croaked tail. Two bright black eyes looked at Sakura meeting her green eyes. Again clad in red as his name says Crimson Red Sought Flower. When he spoke his voice was the one of a cheerful youth.
"I bet you could not imagine. But you would be surprised to see that people not people but mortals, ghosts, or gods are ready to sell to get what they want. After all, some see Ghost City as hell. After all my domain is still on the plane of the living parted by only a thin veil that part living from dead."
His pale fingers ran over the table till between his fingers were two red dice. This was his secret yet very effective way to travel. The teleportation array was tied to his dice, so instead of going through trouble to draw the array every single time he cheated.
"Do you know what traveling or teleport array is? It's similar to what those men used to get here, they had scrolls I have my dice. Each number takes you to a different place, there is an endless combination. And we want to travel to your birthplace. So if I toss the right number...."
And naturally, he tossed the right number after all he was the master of this domain and the only one knowing combinations, it was like magic in a blink of an eye. Hua Cheng led Sakura through the door but instead of entering another chamber or getting out of Gambler's den....The door opened to the planes of Konoha they were on the top of Hokage Mountain.
"Welcome home Sakura Haruno" He chuckled standing next to her.
“R-right now?”
Sakura didn’t expect them to act so suddenly but she stood up with him, then glanced down at the bracelet on her wrist. The thing that contained her ashes. She shivered at the thought of them being destroyed. Her no longer existing. She wasn’t going to let that happen. Or try not to. She didn’t know what things she’ll face here. It was a whole new world and everything she knew was pointless now. Now she had new powers to learn and train with. Chakra was no longer something she could rely on.
She stuck close to Hua Cheng, especially once they stepped out of the manor. Sakura still didn’t trust this world. Still worried something was going to pop up and end her at any moment. She felt safe next to him, “The Gambler’s Den?” Sakura looked up at him with confusion, unsure as to why they had to go through such a place to get to the human world. Gambling made her feel a level of nostalgia for her teacher. Who had a terrible addiction to gambling. Then a pang of sadness went through her knowing she would never be able to enjoy the company of her teacher again. She was dead. And she didn’t want to show her face. Ashamed that she was killed off so easily. Killed by some pathetic bandits and failed her mission.
“I couldn’t imagine selling my soul for something so meaningless…”
He made it seem so normal that people would just gamble or sell away something so important. She hoped she never did anything so dumb. When they reached the gambling den, Sakura’s eyes went wide. It was an impressive but intimidating place. The signs were a little hard to read but they didn’t exactly make this place seem very welcoming. At the very least, the place was empty that night. She didn’t have to feel threatened and overwhelmed by all the activity. Her eyes scanned the area as they walked through. The place was huge! She could imagine this place got pretty packed when it was running. Personally, she was never much of a fan of gambling. Even if she was good at it. Or more, good at cheating. Sakura would memorize the backs of cards and know exactly what each player was dealing with. And then she would know what kind of hand to play. It was as easy as that. If only Tsunade figured that out. She’d stop losing so much. But Sakura also had a near photographic memory. All she had to do was see something once to completely remember it. Maybe that sort of talent will be of use here too.
Sakura looked at the table they stopped at curiously. It didn’t look very special, besides its shape that made it stand out amongst the other tables, “Why did we have to come here to get to the human world? Is this place connected to it in some way?” Her pretty green eyes lifted from the table to his face curiously. Wondering how this table played a part in this.

Having fun on your own | HuaLian
A/N: Excuse me but why didn't I know the fact that Hua Cheng is v e r y good in bed??? Inocent virgen Crown Prince won the lottery!
I hope you enjoy this!
Summary: [N*FW] Xie Lian has become a shameless person and there's no one to blame but The Crimson Rain Sought Flower.
Qiandeng Temple is always so quite without Hua Cheng. He does not talk much, Xie Lian is usually the one doing the talking as Hua Cheng hums, smiles and laughs in the right times. He doesn't talk much, but his absence made the temple seem empty... Like something was missing.
And Xie Lian missed him.
There were some affairs that needed his attendence, he didn't explain fully and Xie Lian didn't care so much either, after all, he was upset that Hua Cheng was going to be away from him for who knows how many hours - however, those thoughts were envious and possessive, so he quickly shook them away and didn't say anything to Hua Cheng besides wishing him a safe trip and telling him to come back soon with a warm smile and a shy kiss on the lips.
He promised he'd stay at the temple, waiting for him while doing more calligraphy exercises for Hua Cheng's demonic handwriting and cleaning up their room. He finished the exercises rather quickly and now he found himself cleaning the mess their room had become.
As soon as he started, however, he was flushing furiously when he found the black blindfold Hua Cheng liked to use on him. He quickly grabbed it and threw it back into the drawer where other silky robes and blindfolds hid, perfectly organized and waiting to be used.
Xie Lian flushed to the tip of his ears as he stared at the robes... He has forgotten how many ways Hua Cheng has tied him up to their divan, exposing his body completely to him; sometimes fully spreaded like a star, sometimes with his arms up above his head. Some other times not even in the divan, but standing on his feet, his arms tied up with a robe falling from the ceiling and-
No.
No no, that was a line of thoughts too dangerous to step in. He kicked the drawer closed and continued to clean up until he found an empty bottle of lube forgotten on the floor at the side of the bed.
Xie Lian choked on his own saliva and he coughed loudly, expecting a loud laugh coming from behind him and a playful voice teasing him about how Gege didn't even notice when Hua Cheng threw the bottle away since he was too busy moaning Hua Cheng's name as he stroked his-
Stop!
"Haa!" Xie Lian gasped when the memory of Hua Cheng's doings last night made certain part of him twitch, suddenly getting half hard. Xie Lian's face was unhealthy red - why was his body reacting in such embarrassing ways?!
Something like this never happened before.
While growing up, Xie Lian never experienced sexual desire nor got unwanted erections, after all, he never had this kind of shameful thoughts when he was young, the most important thing for him was his cultivation, his mind too focused on achieving his dream of becoming a god and save the common people to even bat an eye to his courtesans, much to his mother's dismay; so mundane pleasures were not hard to avoid and ignore for him.
He never had this kind of shameful thoughts, except for that time when he was poisoned by the Land of Tender Fragrance scent, making his body feel hot and sensitive to every single touch, but even when his mind was clouded with unwanted lust, he so desperately tried to find a way to stop the maddening sensation, not enjoying it one bit.
He never had this kind of shameful thoughts... Until Hua Cheng appeared in his life. That man not only showed him a world of endless love, devotion and trust, he also showed him a view to the world of pleasure that Xie Lian was not aware off.
And he made him addicted to it.
To his touches, his kisses and all of those filthy movements with his tongue that had Xie Lian seeing stars. He discovered and abused every single sensitive place in Xie Lian body until the Ghost King had this god crying for certain part of his. Begging him to fill his insides.
Shameless!
Xie Lian growled, feeling how that heat started to pool on his lower belly. Just by looking down, he knew he was fully erect by now, triggered by a blindfold and a tiny empty bottle... Seriously pathetic.
He'd never had this kind of thoughts before, but he so desperately needed release right now.
He let out a shaky sigh as he looked around the room, of course it was empty, but sudden movements on his arms made him flinch in surprise.
It was Ruoye.
Xie Lian gulped, his heart tightening with embarrassment. "It's- it's alright," he gently patted Rouye. "Get out, do not go too far."
Ruoye hesitated for a moment, but it eventually unwrapped itself from Xie Lian's forearms and exited the room. Xie Lian quickly shut the door close and he looked down, hoping to be back to normal.
He was not, of course.
Letting out a soft growl he walked to the divan, but before he could jump in, he stopped, looking down at himself again... Perhaps... He should take his clothes off. His rational mind didn't work anymore, he acted on instincts and needs and desires and in a blink of an eye, he was fully naked and laying on his back on the bed.
His chest was heaving, moving up and down as he stared at his pulsating and twitching cock; in an instant, his hands wrapped around the base of his shaft and he stroked up once.
"Mn!" He shuddered heavily at the sensation and he stroked back down without a second thought, gasping when he hit that particularly sensitive spot that Hua Cheng liked to abuse when he was feeling a bit mean and way too teasy.
Hua Cheng.
He was always so good to Xie Lian. Loving him, adoring him, worshipping him; making him feel good in mind, body and soul. Always so tender and full of love, taking him in his arms and showering his face with loving kisses... then savage, staring at Xie Lian with a hungry and lustful eye, licking his lips as if Xie Lian was the most delicious prey of all, and he was.
And Xie Lian knew he was.
He was so ready to be eaten raw by the Ghost King if that was what he wanted. He was ready to be the lewd victim that Hua Cheng desired, becauss Xie Lian also desired him. Tenderly, fiercely, lovingly, lustfully, he also desired him.
He kept stroking himself, his breathing quickening as he bit the inside of his cheek to keep his noises in check. He closed his eyes, flicking his cock with one hand as he gripped the blankets with the other.
He thought about Hua Cheng, (he always thought about Hua Cheng), touching him teasingly and tortuously and the mere memory of him sliding his finger down his spine just to rile him up, was enough to almost send him over the edge, so close to his climax, so close, so close, so close, but he didn't want to reach it just yet; so he stopped his strokes and the filthiest of whines left his lips as his hips desperately thrusted against his will.
He left his hardened cock stick up, trembling and hanging over his stomach, dripping a ridiculous amount of precum against his heated skin. He bit his lip and before he could shake the nasty thought away, he started to rub his fluids all over his torso - his hips, his stomach, chest and neck.
It was sticky and almost uncomfortable, but he could only care about that single sentence repeating inside his head like a mantra: 'San Lang would lick it off. San Lang would lick it off. San Lang would lick it off. So lick it off!'
But San Lang was not there, not even his butterflies and he was so thankful that E-Ming either, he was just like a child.
He was not there, so Xie Lian had to take care of everything himself. Sticking two fingers into his mouth, he soaked them with his warm saliva until it dribbled down the palm of his hand, and started to brush them against his skin, imagining it was Hua Cheng's long and cold tongue.
It was ridiculous, but he was desperate and needy and hypersensitive...
He was ticklish, he had always been aware of that fact, he knew about it, he knew where and how certain touches made him cackle like a mad man, but only when Hua Cheng tagged alone, he found out that not only his body was full of ticklish spots, but also erogenous places that had him moaning Hua Cheng's name out, pathetically.
His damp fingers went for those spots as his other hand reached down to stroke himself some more, completely avoiding to touch the tip of his cock because he knew that'd make him come undone. He didn't want to cum yet.
He reached up to play with his left ear a little, tugging at the the lobe until he was whimpering softly; he moved down the side of his neck, leaving a trail of saliva behind his touch. He scratched his collabones and rubbed his chest, avoiding his hard nipples because they'd also make him cum too fast.
Xie Lian arched his back as his own fingers travelled down, dipping into his bellybutton and following all the way down. He dared to touch the tip with his filthy fingers and he arched his back off the bed, his legs trembling as he felt dangerously close.
But it was not enough! It was not enough and tears of both pleasure and desperation fell from the corners of his eyes. He needed, he needed-
"Gege? Are you alright? What's wrong?" Hua Cheng soft voice sounded so close to his ear and he flinched, moaning loudly.
"Gege?"
His hands worked faster than his mind, only when he heard Hua Cheng's voice he realized he had pressed his fingers against his temple and had prayed that awfully embarrassing password almost incoherently.
"Tease me," he pleaded, more lewd sounds filling the room.
"En?"
"Goodness, please t-tease me San Lang! I'm- I'm-"
"Is Gege touching himself?" That tone in his voice made Xie Lian moan loudly. "I thought Gege said he was going to make more calligraphy exercises for me."
Xie Lian turned on his side and the hand that was simply gripping the blankets came to his mouth; he licked his shaky fingers desperately and when he thought they were damped enough, he pushed then inside him.
He never did that before, it felt weird and his arm hurt for twisting like that, but he flicked his wrists in, moving his fingers around just like Hua Cheng did.
"Gege is being really naughty, is he not?"
Xie Lian could hear the smirk on his lips and he sobbed. "I- I did-"
"He said that, but instead, he's touching himself in our bed while his husband is not there," Xie Lian's hips trusted like crazy as he pumped himself with his hand. "And, on top of that, he is keeping me from finishing my work so I can come back quickly back home."
Xie Lian moaned again when he finally found his favorite spot inside him. He teased it with the tips of his fingers over and over, sending shivers up his spine.
Hua Cheng was not able to hear his filthy sounds. It was a shame.
"I just... San Lang, I just..."
Hua Cheng chuckled and Xie Lian shuddered. He'd heard that chuckle before, when Xie Lian was begging so pathetically for him to fill him up. Always begging, always taking.
"I thought our playtime last night was enough to satisfy His Highness for at least all day," he said casually. "But I think I was wrong since Gege is not behaving so well right now. I think this lowly devote has to punish His Highness for misbehaving."
A Ghost King punishing a god. Xie Lian was drunk in that delicious thought.
"Maybe I'll use a blindfold on His Highness so he can't see where I'm touching next."
"S-San Lang! Oh!"
"I know how much His Highness likes to cum inside San Lang's mouth, too, but this is a punishment, so San Lang will have to stop everytime he feels like His Highness is about to cum."
"Please, please please please!"
"His Highness also gets so desperate when I finger that tender spot inside him." At his words, Xie Lian presses that spot harshly, making himself cry out in pleasure. "He always begs me to 'put it in' when I touch him there mercilessly. I might as well make His Highness cum over and over with just my fingers rubbing that spot."
A part of his mind, one that wasnot clouded by the this crazy pleasure, wondered if he was being heard in the Ghost City. Somehow... That thought made his cock tremble in his hand.
"That will be his punishment," Hua Cheng said nonchalantly, "but I'm sure His Highness would be enjoying himself way too much, wouldn't you, Gege?"
"Nnngaaah! San Lang!"
Xie Lian's eyes rolled back, his back arched and cum spurted out forcefully as he trembled uncontrollably with pleasure.
He came and came and came and touched himself until he was twitching like crazy at the overstimulation. The corners of his councious becoming blurry as if he was about to pass out, to ascend to heaven for the fourth time or to fall into the depths of hell.
It felt so good. How can it feel so good? He can't get enough.
More.
"Hmm? Did Gege come because I was explaining his punishment?" Hua Cheng's voice brought him back from his stupor as he laid on the divan, boneless and trembling softly. "Gege can be so nasty some times."
"San Lang, please come back soon."
"Mhm, I'm right here, His Highness."
Xie Lian turned around to see Hua Cheng standing on the entrence, a smirk pulling at his lips and his eye looking hungrily at the god laying on the bed, covered in cum and sweat and tears and insatiable desire.
"San Lang..."
"I hope Gege is ready for his punishment."
"Mn. This god is ready."
Xie Lian never had felt sexual desire, but after meeting Hua Cheng, he didn't wish to have sexual desire for anyone else.
