In 2022, will Samsung release a rollable phone?
Samsung is the market leader in the foldable smartphone area, with two best-selling products, but is a rollable phone on the way?
For years, there have been assertions that the smartphone market has been stagnating, but such concerns have faded since the introduction of foldable handsets. There's a lot to be excited about with firms like Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, OPPO, and Xiaomi promoting the new form factor. More manufacturers are anticipated to join, some this year and others in a few years.
The Galaxy S22 series is likely to be Samsung's first significant launch in 2022, although like previous Galaxy Unpacked events, there will be more than simply new flagship smartphones announced. Samsung's Galaxy Tab S8 tablet series is also scheduled to debut, demonstrating the company's continued commitment to the tablet sector.
According to a recent report, Samsung is working on a revolutionary foldable smartphone with a screen that slides out rather than folding (unrolls). What are the possibilities that the business will release a phone with a rollable display in 2022, even though it has exhibited a prototype? Since its introduction in 2019 with the Galaxy Fold, Samsung's Galaxy line of foldable devices has grown in popularity. The Galaxy Z series currently comprises two varieties of foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold, which folds horizontally, and the Galaxy Z Flip, which folds clamshell-style.
TCL and OPPO, in addition to Samsung, have all shown concept phones with slidable and rollable displays, but neither has released a final product. Although there have been considerable gains with each subsequent generation, the technology underlying foldables is still in its infancy, which explains why there are so few companies in the category. Finally, there are rollable and slidable phones, which have the advantage of not having creases like their foldable counterparts but also require a sturdy motor to withstand the frequent movement of the display panel.
That isn't to suggest that Samsung won't release a rollable smartphone in the future. There is just no confirmation that one is scheduled for release in 2022. Samsung, on the other hand, is already a winner with its Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold lines, which will both get new variants in the second half of 2022. As a result, the company's current focus is on convincing more customers to switch to these gadgets.

Samsung confirms the Galaxy Unpacked event date to launch Galaxy S21 series
After making us wait for so long, Samsung is finally unveiling the Galaxy S21 series and other gadgets if possible this January. The company has confirmed the date of its Galaxy Unpacked event, which will be held on January 14th, 2020 at 10 AM EST. The event can be live-streamed from anywhere through Samsung’s website.
Samsung confirmed the Galaxy Unpacked event date
As we all thought, Samsung scheduled the Galaxy Unpacked event in January this year, with 14th as the date at 10 AM EST. Asking us to mark out calendars, Samsung has shared a short video of the slightly blurred rear camera module of its Galaxy S21 handset. Though blurred, we see it’s having their lens aligned vertically, and probably be setting on the top left side.
Your experiences are about to get even more epic on January 14, 2021. Watch #SamsungUnpacked live on https://t.co/D6nxws2O4T pic.twitter.com/IVKmxn3Epv
— Samsung Mobile (@SamsungMobile) January 3, 2021
Though the maker hasn’t shared any other details, we expect the revelation of its next flagship series, Galaxy 21, which is touted to have three handsets as one standard S21, S21 Plus, and S21 Ultra. Most of the important speculations of these handsets were leaked already, from its case to expected price.
One notable fitting includes the handsets (or at least the high-end one) to have Snapdragon 888 processor, which was launched early last month and Xiaomi has already set into its Mi 11. Besides the smartphones, Samsung may also take wraps off its upgraded TWS, Galaxy Buds Pro.
We have learned a lot about the Galaxy Buds Pro lately, from its expected colors to specifications. Also, we had rumors that Samsung may ditch the Galaxy S21 Note series in favor of putting the regular S21 series into the mainstream, as it’s bringing the stylus, S Pen support to Galaxy S21 Ultra.
All of these will be confirmed when the OEM gets into the action, which can be live-streamed on January 14th, at 10 AM EST from Samsung’s website. Also, we suggest you follow the Samsung Newsroom for some major announcements before the official launch.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha R dual display rollable phone with slick pull-out screen appears in patent
Foldable smartphones could become a thing of the past, again, as more smartphone companies delve deeper into rollable technology. Firms like OPPO have already teased such a flexible device, and unsurprisingly it appears that Xiaomi doesn’t want to be left off this particular bandwagon. LetsGoDigital has found a patent for a rollable phone from Xiaomi that incorporates the dual display design of the Mi Mix Alpha.
Thanks to Jermaine Smit, also known as Concept Creator, we can get a better look at the device, which has been given the moniker Xiaomi Mi Alpha R, in some renders and a video (see below). The smartphone looks just like the Mi Mix Alpha at first glance, but it then shows that it has a retractable or pull-out display due to the inventive utilization of rollable screen technology.
The Mi Alpha R is easily converted from smartphone size to tablet size thanks to the retractable screen, and the mechanism’s construction and design means that the display shouldn't be obstructed with creases or lines, even when touched. Of course, this is just a patent and therefore the Xiaomi rollable phone might never be produced, but even if it was manufactured you could certainly expect a sky-high price tag for this one.

Images of LG's rollable phone have been teased online, displaying an incredibly impressive piece of technology that can double its screen size. Most consumers want the best of both worlds when it comes to their devices. When it comes to convenience, consumers opt for small, but when it comes to function, they opt for large. LG's latest device is set to combine the two, as it features a screen that can be rolled out, revealing a larger surface area. According to the brand, the user can expand the phone on the left side, the right side, or both sides at the same time, presenting a convenient device with that capabilities and potential of a tablet. After Galaxy Fold, Samsung developing two more foldable phones: Report
Highlights: Samsung is reportedly working on two more foldable phones. The company is also said to be working on improving the durability of the Galaxy Fold. In future, Samsung may bring phones with rollable and stretchable displays. Samsung pioneered the foldable phone technology and was one of the first OEMs to showcase a nd launch such a device. The company is now reportedly working on two more foldable devices seeking an early lead in the new, untested market segment. Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that the South Korean tech giant is said to be developing a clamshell-like device and another that folds away from the user similar to the Huawei Mate X that was launched at the recently-concluded Mobile World Congress. Samsung is reportedly planning to unveil the vertically folding phone late this year or early next year and is said to be using mock-ups to fine-tune the design. The gadget is designed with an extra screen on the outside, but the manufacturer may remove it depending on how customers respond to a similar display on the Galaxy Fold, they said. The outfolding device, which already exists as a prototype after being considered as Samsung’s first foldable gadget, will roll out afterward. It will be thinner because it has no extra screen. The sources also said that Samsung may incorporate an in-display fingerprint sensor for its foldable lineup. As far as the Galaxy Fold is concerned, Samsung is also trying to improve the durability of the Galaxy Fold’s display by eliminating the crease that appears on the panel after it’s been folded about 10,000 times. Reportedly, Samsung is considering offering free screen replacements after releasing the product in April. Digit was at the MWC where Samsung showcased the phone in a glass box. People with the knowledge of the matter also explained the reasons why the South Korean company chose to put the phone in a glass display. The Galaxy Fold’s screen imperfection develops on a protective film covering the touch sensor bonded with the display underneath, one of the people said. “That’s one reason why Samsung kept the phone inside a glass case at MWC in Barcelona last month,” the person said. Another reason why the device was kept away from the hands of reviewers was software imprefections, a source told Digit.in. Citing a Samsung spokeswoman, the report on the new foldable phones from the company said that the Galaxy Fold was displayed that way because the company wanted more attention on the Galaxy S10 phones, not because there was a problem with the quality of the foldable device. The company had announced that it will produce 1 million foldable phones this year. For the Galaxy Fold, Samsung has also worked with Google on an optimised Android operating system for a foldable screen. Samsung’s other competitors like Xiaomi, LG and Apple are also said to be working on foldable phones. Xiaomi is working on a dual-folding phone while LG has already said that it does not want to release the foldable phone because it feels there no market for it. Apple, however, hasn’t announced any plans for a similar gadget but patent published in past few months have suggested that the iPhone-maker is working in this direction as well. “No one knows what the ideal design is yet. The time is ripe for experimentation. Many of these designs won’t be successful, but industry players will learn valuable lessons along the way,” Bryan Ma, Vice President of Devices Research at IDC, was quoted as saying. Samsung also envisions smartphones with rollable and stretchable displays in the future, company’s Executive Vice President Chung Eui-suk said on the corporate website earlier this year. Visionox introduces a foldable clamshell smartphone and rollable OLED panel
During the First World Conference on Display Industry in China, Visionox showcased two new interesting products - a foldable clamshell smartphone and a rollable OLED panel hinting at even more interesting designs in the next one or two years. And just a quick reminder - this is the company that supplies the futuristic panel for the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha. The foldable clamshell prototype that was shown on site looks a lot like the new Motorola Razr 2019 but when you look closely, the design looks more polished and resembles a normal handset from 2019. The AMOLED display used for the prototype...

Samsung Galaxy Fold: A Crease, a Click, and It’s Thick
The Samsung Galaxy Fold is a pricey, but promising device that kicks off a new phase of the smartphone industry.
On Monday, the company held an event in New York City to let reporters and other members of media try out the gadget for the first time. Samsung announced the phone in February and it goes on sale April 26 at the wallet-stretching price of $1,980.
Samsung forecasts it will produce at least 1 million foldable phones this year. That’s a fraction of all the phones that the company shipped last year. Still, research firm Gartner Inc. expects the market will grow to 30 million units by 2023. Huawei Technologies Co., Xiaomi Corp., and Lenovo Group Ltd.’s Motorola unit are working on foldable phones.
There’s no indication yet that Apple is working on a folding iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy Fold: Review
Samsung Galaxy Fold Photographer: Mark Gurman/Bloomberg
The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch screen on the front, which makes it smaller than most modern smartphone screens. But it opens up to become a 7.3-inch tablet, letting users run three apps at once.
It has half a terabyte of storage and 12 gigabytes of RAM, rivaling high-end laptops. It also has six cameras and a pair of batteries.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Photographer: Mark Gurman/Bloomberg
The device feels like a tablet when opened up. There’s a satisfying click sound for the hinge. A crease is noticeable, but it doesn’t get in the way of using it. There’s spacing between two sides of the touchscreen keyboard so that typing with thumbs is comfortable.
When folded shut, the front-facing screen is small, and there is a noticeable gap above and below the display. The phone is also fairly thick when closed. It comes in silver, black, green and blue and pre-orders begin on Monday. The device will be available in the U.S. on the wireless networks of AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc.
Samsung is also developing a clamshell-like foldable phone and another one that folds outward, Bloomberg News reported last month. The company also envisions smartphones with rollable and stretchable displays, Samsung Executive Vice President Chung Eui-suk said in February.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Photographer: Mark Gurman/Bloomberg
Samsung spent eight years developing the Galaxy Fold. Still, there are questions about durability. Samsung is trying to remove a crease that appears on the protective film above the screen after it’s been folded about 10,000 times, Bloomberg News reported last month.
The company has since released footage of machines repeatedly opening and closing the phone in what it dubbed an “extremity test” to assert its durability.

Foldable iPad renders appear online: This is what Apples foldable device could look like
Highlights LetsGoDigital has revealed renders of a foldable Apple device This is just a render, there is no information of when the device will be revealed. If you ever wondered what Apple’s take on the foldable device could look like, you need not imagine anymore. Renders of a foldable iPad come from Dutch technology website LetsGoDigital. There is no information on any launch window of the device. These are just renders. It is possible that Apple is looking at a foldable device in the future. The renders make the upcoming foldable iPad more in line with Huawei's foldable offering than Samsung’s. The display folds on the outside which means that when you fold the device, you will have a screen on both sides. Other reports online suggest that Samsung recently presented Apple with a foldable device. This device is smaller than Samsung’s own the Galaxy Fold. The device which Samsung showed Apple is 7.2-inch in size. It remains to be seen whether this rendered device is 7.2-inches when unfolded. Apple is already late to the foldable device party. although, it could be said that the Cupertino-based tech giant is working to perfect its design before it makes it official. At MWC 2019, many smartphone manufacturers showed off their foldable concepts. Huawei, Samsung, TCL, Xiaomi and LG have shown their take on foldable devices. All these are concepts and while some of these devices have launch windows, no one really got in-depth hands on time with any of the foldable devices at MWC 2019. You can read more about the foldable phones here. Foldable and rollable screens aren't new to the world of technology, but 2019 is the year where we will see the launch of devices powered by these technologies. Besides foldable phones, we have also seen a rollable TV from LG which will launch in 2019. You can read more the rollable TV here. Apple has a history of redefining consumer technology products. It did so with the first Mac, it changed the portable music player industry with the iPod and has also made the first modern smartphone in the form of the iPhone. What it does with the foldable form factor is something we will have to wait for and watch.
