i think xiao's story + characterization is 1000x easier to comprehend if it's understood that the reason he's bound himself to slaying monsters in liyue is not because of a contract - he's bound himself to liyue because of his guilt, trauma, lack of self-worth and the belief that he should atone for his past transgressions (and the thing is, he believes nothing he does will ever be enough to atone)
