is it possible for a woman to inherit a sect or only sons?
Hi nonny!
I wrote about this a bit here, but traditionally to like, the wuxia genre: 1) this was (depending on the sect in question of course) mostly a meritocracy, so it's not strictly true that the daughters or sons of the former sect leader is inheriting the sect but also 2) the gender for many sects is entirely irrelevant, many prominent jianghu families in many many wuxia books aren't exactly like, desperate for sons even if they have (1) child and that child is a girl, like what will girl do? girl will learn martial arts. like it's hard?
In fact in classical wuxia it's actually quite...common to have female sect leaders (either of entirely female sects or of mixed gender sects) because sects are kind of, things you join rather than things you're born to and you inherit them because shifu said so, not due to biology.
For example, Huang Rong in Legend of the Condor Heroes and Return of the Condor Heroes, is the sect leader for the Beggar Clan, which is the largest and most powerful sect in the wulin instead of her husband Guo Jing, who was also a disciple of the previous sect leader.
Xiao Longnv from Return of the Condor Heroes comes from the Ancient Tomb Sect which, only accepts women btw, so all of their sect leaders have been women.
Yuan Ziyi's shifu, Baixiao Shenni, from Young Flying Fox was the sect leader of the Tianshan sect and a Buddhist Nun.
Dingxian from Xiao Ao Jiang Hu and her sisters, Dingjing and Dingyi, form a group called the "Three Elder Nuns" who are the leaders of the Northern Hengshan Sword Sect. Also from XAJH, Lan Fenghuang is the leader of the Five Immortal's Cult.
I'm not going to keep going down the list of like, female sect leaders in the traditional sense of the jianghu (for the record, all of the above books were written and published in the 1950s-1970s so it's not a recent phenomenon at all), but like, wuxia as a genre has in general, been surprisingly egalitarian on matters of gender. The fact of the matter is, this was the genre that first told me, at 7 or 8 years old that like, women can be powerful and intelligent and unhinged, whether they're villains or heroes or anywhere in between.
So uh, I think the reason you might not be aware of this Nonny (which is not a strike against you in any way!) is because danmei is primarily what's popular right now and danmei as a genre from what I've seen does not have uh, a great track record of bountiful female characters who are well rounded and extant or in positions of power.

Bring on the mutant clones!
So apparently, the way to get a good, 'proper' wuxia drama these days that isn't yet another Jin Yong or Gu Long adaptation is to make a well-constructed fanfiction-style re-imagination of a JY or GL classic. That way it can be simultaneously fresh and familiar. And if the writing, acting, action sequences, etc. are good, it's so much fun and I love it. These past few years, I really enjoyed watching "Word of Honor" and "Mysterious Lotus Casebook", both of which are clear cases of this. (Note: I haven't read the books for WoH or MLC, so this is based on the dramas only.)
"Word of Honor" is obviously heavily inspired by Jin Yong's "Smiling Proud Wanderer" (Xiao Ao Jiang Hu), except redone as a BL/danmei. It even keeps the various orthodox sects from XAJH (the Five Mountains Sword Schools Alliance! plus the Shaolin, Wudang, Beggars, etc.) as part of the setting, features a hunt for a MacGuffin (key to some ultimate power or other), and is full of that flavor of treachery and scheming for power reminiscent of XAJH. It's been a while since I watched WOH, so I've forgotten most of the details, but I remember getting a strong XAJH vibe from it.
"Mysterious Lotus Casebook", which I just finished watching and loved even more than "Word of Honor", has more of the feel of Gu Long's "Sentimental Swordsman, Ruthless Sword" (Xiaoli Feidao series, book 1). Come on, the protagonists even have the same surname: Lotus Li (Xiangyi/Lianhua) vs Flying Dagger Li (Xunhuan)!
Both of them can pass as scholarly types (though Gu Long's Mr. "Number Three in the Exams" Li more so) and went from a high status position to retiring from the jianghu for ten years. Both are clever, tricky types who live by their wits.
Both of them pushed their female love interests (and deceived them) onto their 'friend' who actually hated/plotted against them. The protagonist comes off better (as in, I don't want to punch him in the face quite as much) in MLC than in "Sentimental Swordsman" --- he doesn't treat her as his property to be traded away. And in theory the female character had more agency in MLC, though I felt let down by the actor here. I think she was supposed to be more driven by guilt (because she broke up with the male lead right before his supposed death) rather than sadly pining after and still in love with him. It would have worked better if she came off as being genuinely in love with the other character, but on screen it feels like she was just worn down and never liked him that much. So as a 'fix-it' to that aspect of "Sentimental Swordsman"… maybe. In theory.
They both get the "enemy is someone you thought you had good relations with" trope (admittedly a common one in wuxia)…
…While their real friend is called "A-Fei" and is a top-notch swordsman. And both A-Fei's are plagued by a professional seductress (who uses drugs and poisons) who clings to/falls in love with them!
They both meet their number one fans. Dagger Li actually marries his in the end, but in MLC that only happens in the eyes of the real life fans (the subtext is definitely there, though I prefer to read it as platonic bromance). The whole thing is funnier in MLC, with Fang Duobing starting out as a naive doofus who claims to everyone he's a disciple of (supposedly dead) Li Xiangyi, including to the man himself and to A-Fei who knows the truth. Then he feels so betrayed when he finds out the truth, and that was all done really well in the show. Another similarity: the girl in "Sentimental Swordsman" has a kick-ass granddad, while Fang Duobing has his mom (another great character), the leader of Tianji Hall (I love a good mechanism specialist).
There's an actual book in-world that lists the top-ranked martial artists! The MLC one seems to be updated regularly, even. That was also a thing in "Sentimental Swordsman", with characters constantly citing the book at each other, and some were completely obsessed. It's kind of a running joke in both.
Solving all the mysteries (and the tomb raiding!) was reminiscent of Chu Liuxiang, another Gu Long protagonist (my childhood favorite). And for non-wuxia influences, Li Lianhua reminded me of Howl from "Howl's Moving Castle" with the lying and slithering out of situations, not to mention the cool-looking mobile home!
So yeah, instead of trying to get a fresh take on adapting a book that's already been adapted like twenty times and offending the purists if you make too many weird changes, file off the serial numbers and take a few steps to the side for a more interesting and coherent re-mix! And set it in a fictional dynasty so you can use fake historical figures and kingdoms to suit your plot without worrying about slandering real people (while I love Jin Yong's use of actual history, even he ended up changing some characters in later revisions because of that) or how much the characters are allowed to affect things on a bigger scale. Plus you can update and improve on the things that were annoying or outdated in the "classics". You're free to change the meaning of the tale to suit yourself without any need to distort the intentions of the original writer.
That's not to say it's impossible to come up with completely new wuxia stories, but building new variations on old stories is worthwhile, too. And beneath any surface similarities, each version has its own story to tell. That said, ninety percent of everything is crap… so besides these two shows I liked, there were a bunch of ones I didn't, whether an adaptation of an old wuxia classic or something newer. (Some of those may improve in later episodes, but I guess I'll never know…)
Long live the mutant clones!

this entire thing below is a meta essay I wrote in response to my NHS post canon mental breakdown fic (which I also never uploaded anywhere until now bc lolsob writing meta about your own fic and its influences...) which I think is the fic that I wrote that is CLOSEST to Jin Yong vibes and register that I've written. At least, the closest one that I did on purpose:
Hooooboy where to even begin on my thoughts regarding the combined MDZS+XAJH universe. Anyway there has to be a note re: my thoughts about the combined MZDS XAJH universe, starting from the first part of CQL where WWX talks about duguqiuyibai. (look up what episode this is in btw). In my brain, CQL takes place in a post XAJH world, where both the five great sword sects (what little remained of them after XAJH lmao) and the sun-moon sect (what little remained of IT after Yingying kind of disbanded it and ran off) are both long gone.
My nerd brain also says that because this is a combined universe, people are more often than not to learn uh, well, not entirely accurate versions of history and also to take the wrong lessons from it. XAJH is a story about how “orthodoxy” and “unorthodoxy” aren’t as important as one’s personal choice to be a good person. Liu Zhengfeng and Qu Yang died due to powerful men on both sides of the “orthodoxy” and “unorthodoxy” debate persecuting them because such friendships between the two sides undermined their personal power, but with the strict way that the MZDS jianghu views orthodoxy = good — and the way that history distorts after the years and the confusion surrounding the Liu family massacre — it’s entirely possible that the MZDS society centuries later remembers this whole thing as a cautionary tale, and Linghu Chong as an unfilial disruptive bastard rather than a hero. Now, of course, in a cycle of repetition and tragedy, the story of Liu Zhengfeng and Qu Yang are a cautionary tale in parallel to Linghu Chong and Ren Yingying who escape the troubled and doomed fate of their elders by permanently leaving society. However, WWX and LWJ are yet another inversion of this parable regarding orthodoxy and unorthodoxy and persecution, and end up needing a second lifetime to be able to escape from the confines of societal persecution.
I cannot stress enough how much Jin Yong’s works — and Xiao Ao Jiang Hu especially — have influenced me as a writer and as a result, this fic, where so much of the concept of chivalry, revenge, and deceit are present. I have always thought that XAJH’s themes — of hypocrisy, of loss, of being banished from one’s sect, of maintaining heroism, of the sheer crippling sorrow of having lost almost the entirety of the older generation, of destruction, of powerful older men browbeating young sect leaders into committing or at least ignoring horrific acts of destruction and violence — have in a lot of ways, resonated with the themes of MZDS and CQL. There is a loss of innocence, of horrifying, terrible hypocrisy, of being taken advantage of, of being sent to the slaughter when all you wanted was to do the right thing present in XAJH’s political allegory, which parallels much more WWX’s character arc in this situation than NHS. And yet, something about NHS’s extended grief arc here represents so much of hypocrisy and deceit, both in what he dealt and what he was dealt.  WRH’s descent into madness arc comes from my love for another one of Jin Yong’s side characters, this time Huang Yaoshi from LOCH and ROCH (legend and return of the condor heroes respectively) and how his hubris and indeed, greed for certain martial arts techniques led directly to the loss of his wife and his mental breakdown which saw him break the legs of all his disciples and banish them from Peach Blossom Island, in a move that would haunt him (and kickstart some vital events of both novels) for years to come. HYS and WRH are paralleled in my mind as eccentrics, brilliant inventors, and heretics, deeply proud, deeply esoteric in their martial leanings, and deeply deeply complex.
They’re, at least in my brain, both characters that are not easily taken apart and consumed. Besides, I have a deep and long abiding love for brilliant, arrogant, slightly insane polymaths who might also be single fathers who dote on their children, and HYS is the original and the most brilliant of them all lmao.
Some of the writing style of the more narratively distant scenes in this story are also inspired by the style of Jin Yong, especially the scene of the introduction of Hai-shi or Madam Lan, and to that end, I owe very much the friends at spcnet.tv forums who were my first gateway into fandom spaces, and the amazing and wonderful fan translator friends I made there, whose work I spent much of the early 2010s reading and who wholeheartedly welcomed my efforts in learning how to translate wuxia novels. Thank you so much to Ken and Lanny and all the other friends from there, who were so very patient with a much younger member of fandom.
The sects themselves in my mind, and in this fic, also operate a little bit more like a typical Jin Yong wuxia genre setting that what is normal or typical of what I’ve seen in the fandom, and I could probably write a whole paper on the way that bloodline sects have enforced a terrible burden on the young people in this series and how it may have solved SOME jianghu problems but invented a whole bunch of others, and how as with any society that deals primarily with inheritance through bloodlines it eventually revealed a rot that has less to do with a specific person who has a lot of personal ability getting greedy, but a solidification of social status, inability to advance one’s social status, and placing much more emphasis on blood connections rather than any form of competency and what that has done to the characters of the Untamed (mostly grind them through a grist mill of misery caused directly by their social statuses and the stratification thereof) which is entirely atypical of the wuxia genre, BUT, I will spare everyone the screaming about that especially in the notes of a fic lol.
idk strictly if I can actually essay this in any way that makes entire sense but this bit of the recent mxtx interview sticks out to me bc I've been talking about how both cql (in many ways) and mdzs the book itself has in ways echoed Jin Yong novels (for me I primarily see the influences of XAJH and LOCH in MDZS) AND how the world of mdzs and its jianghu is so specifically and purposefully different than the typical jianghu you'd find in a wuxia (taking its primary influences from Jin Yong and Gu Long) that it has to be a purposeful departure against genre convention (I have a meta post about this somewhere in me that I have half written and I want to scream about it later when I have more braincells) and it's just!!!
it's so validating to know that THIS IS TRUE.
idk!!! idk!!! I'm just so excited!!!

@orion-flux sorry I couldn’t reply to you on the OG thread because OP blocked me lmao. Yes you’re right in wuxia novels, personal loyalty is held up to a very high standard. Liu Zhengfeng 劉正風 in xiao ao jiang hu 笑傲江湖 didn’t betray his friend Qu Yang 曲洋 from the demonic sect even when people held his family hostage and eventually killed them. And our protagonist wwx is a classic wuxia hero. As for collective punishment like “抄家“,it’s usually carried out by the government in 權謀 novels, and it’s sometimes portrayed as unjust, other times, an necessary evil for the government to keep powerful political clans and generals under control. Regardless of the historical background or genres, harming innocent elderly and children or your benefactors is frown upon
