THEY JUST OPEN-SOURCED DINO RUN?????

We're open-sourcing Dino Run DX. As some of our most dedicated players have discovered, Dino Run DX multiplayer no longer works. The wonderful folks at Xgen Studios, who basically let multiplayer live rent-free for years, had to recently sunset all of their legacy games (like Stick Arena) and the servers that run them. And as you can imagine, Dino Run used those servers. They DID send us the source code to the server itself, so maybe we can get it up and running again on our end. However, we haven't been able to compile the actual game for years now, since it's legacy flash and that no longer works on any computer that we own. So... 1) We've uploaded the Dino Run DX source code to the legacy-dinorun channel on our discord server: https://discord.com/invite/JM2MMUf. It's a pinned post. Anyone that wants to try and compile the game (Using Flash Builder 4.7) is welcome to. Let us know if you can get it working! 2) If someone can recompile DX, we'll see if we can get the server up and running on our end with the source that Xgen sent us. 3) We're very close to having a very small multiplayer experience playable for Dino Run 2! More on that in the coming months. Thanks for the many lovely memories racing dinos. Time to pour one out...

I gotta admit, for a long time, I was under the impression that XGenStudios' seminal Flash classic "Defend Your Castle" was the originator, or at least the... popularizer (is that a word?) of the TD genre.

I want to write a paper on the history of the Tower Defense Genre, but I am struggling with the research aspects of finding good sources to base it off (Both first and second). Do you have any tips for finding sources and resources that could help me with this? I have some vague ideas of games I'd like to cover, but no idea how to check to see how important they are, and how to find more obscure games that may be relevant. I mostly am asking you since you seem to know a lot of researching media history.

I'm afraid I don't have a lot of insight into the history of tower defence games. I didn't really get into the genre until after it had become popularised by the Warcraft III modding community in the mid 2000s; my awareness of its pre-2000s existence is cursory at best, mostly consisting of having played the NES version of Rampart. Maybe someone following this blog will be able to help you out, though!

EXCITING NEWS!! Today, the company I do art for, XGen Studios, released The Low Road on Steam! It’s such a great feeling to finally get to show all of the illustrations I’ve been working on over the past 3 and a half years. It feels a bit strange to not get that immediate feedback that we’re so used to as artists these days, but it’s so rewarding to see it all come together in the final months and weeks. Working with this team of supportive and hardworking creative individuals makes these Long Projects feel short.
