Submissions for Volume 3 Now Open!

DEADLINE: JUNE 1, 2020

Hi all! A fair number of people indicated they’d be interested in a third issue of Touchstone, so let’s do it: Quarantine Edition.

The deadline for the third volume will be 1 June, 2020. For more info, visit the website: www.msrfanzine.com and see the page on submissions. (I am also copying the submission guidelines below, under a cut.)

Don’t forget that smaller art, manips, photos, shitposts, and commentary can be previously published. While I’m still looking for original content for full-page art and longer fanfiction, shorter bits and bobs may have previously appeared on the web (just indicate where and/or provide a link if possible).

Don’t hesitate to send an ask if you have any questions!

Submission Guidelines

Please Note: Fanfiction and fan art should not have been previously published, either in print or online (such as on ao3 or tumblr). While we may print some previously published content (such as commentary, photos, shitposts, image manips, etc.), fiction and full-page art should be original to the zine. PLEASE INDICATE IN YOUR SUBMISSION EMAIL WHETHER YOUR CONTENT HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED (and if so, where).

Fanfiction

Please submit fanfiction in an editable format such as a word document (.doc, .docx) or a rich text file (.rtf) not a pdf or google doc (these are a nightmare to copy/paste/edit).

Please format your document for print, which means no space between paragraphs (except for in section breaks) and indents at the beginning of each paragraph.

In the document itself, be sure to include a title, the name you wish to be published under, a brief (fewer than 75 words) summary, and the following tags:

rating

identifiers (au, smut, hurt/comfort, angst, etc.)

timeline (pre-xf, season 6, episode names, etc.)

Art

In the body of your email, please list the title of your piece (if it has one) and the name under which you wish to be published.

Indicate your medium (digital art, pen and ink, etc.)

Please upload or attach files at a print-worthy resolution (at least 300 dpi).

Keep in mind that the magazine will be printed in black and white, so color images will be desaturated.

Other

We welcome: photos, screen grabs, interviews, meta commentary, personal essays, doodles, shitposts, image captions, manips, fake dialogue, and all other forms of msr nonsense. These can have been previously published, but please indicate where/when in your submission email.

Not even 1am shitposting time: can someone explain to me why this silly little show still has such a hold on me?

Despite all the twists and turns, despite the fact that it torpedoed my ship, despite the fact that neither character is on the show anymore, despite the fact that I have seen episodes multiple times? There is no good reason for me to still be here.

Thinking back to my fandom obsessions over the years, I should be long gone by now...

(To be fair, this blog was dead for like 8 months until the promo for “She” came out and revived the embers of my love lmao)

I fell in love with XF in high school (sometime around when the first movie came out) and stuck with it until the end, although season 9 was a train wreck and I kept thinking, “surely it can’t get worse,” until it did. (For my tastes — which I know are particular. If you loved it, more power to you! I was so mad at the last two episodes I wouldn’t touch my DVD box sets for at least 10 years after. I nearly gave them away the day after the finale lol.)

JAG — I stopped watching sometime by the end of season 8 or maybe 9, when the characters just seemed like they didn’t like each other anymore. (I did rewatch years later.)

Gilmore Girls — I stuck with it till the end, but boy, that last season hurt me.

Bones: ah, this one burned bright then flamed out. I got into the fandom around season 6 or 7, discovered tumblr, made long posts about the show, read all the articles and analyzed shit, poured my fan girl heart into it... and then burned out by season 10. (Again: it just wasn’t to my taste. Those of you who loved it, I salute you and glad you had something to love!) honestly if it weren’t for certain factors I would have quit watching. But I did lose the fandom mojo by then for sure.

But my Tiva obsession over the last 4 years? WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. I’ve been involved in online fandom for 20 years now (YIKES) but not once did I ever feel the need to write fanfic, for instance. Not even as a teenage girl obsessed with Mulder and Scully. NEVER. But with Tiva there is no shortage of ideas! And I feel like waxing poetic about scenes whenever I see reruns on tv that I’ve seen 5 times already! And I can just talk and talk and talk! And again, I’ve kept this pace FOR FOUR YEARS. It should have faded by now like it has every other show I’ve been into. Instead I feel like it’s getting worse lmao.

And like, no offence, but this isn’t the height of drama or intricate writing. It’s an escapist formulaic crime procedural*. It’s not deep. YET I CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. Tony and Ziva are only 2 out of like 50 regular cast members, and we got a Tiva moment like once every 3 eps, but here I am making shit up in between!

All this to say, I don’t understand why this show or these characters have this pull, because by all accounts there is no explanation as to why it should, yet here I still am. Maybe it’s Hotel California, I don’t know.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for indulging me once in awhile! Just had to say it!

*i don’t mean that in a bad way. Tv needs these shows. I don’t want to think all the time. There’s a reason these kinds of shows are successful. You get to watch attractive people solve the world’s problems in 43 minutes and they always get their bad guy one way or another. It’s a security blanket for the rest of life’s problems.

(crazy since i remember when we didn’t even think the revival would happen...) and i didn’t feel like just Turning up out the blue. if you’re seeing this it means you used to follow me pre-2k16 and um lol you probably now have no idea who i am now so to Maybe jog your memory:

{Fanhood thoughts, personal ramblings, Disney-era SW negativity so skip if you want.}

Hey y’all, thank you for putting up with the avalanche of X-Files spam. I needed that episode so bad I didn’t even realize it. I know most the people who follow this blog are from the Star Wars fandom, and there’s a lot I love about Star Wars - but since the Disney takeover, it’s just been this constant exercise in desperately wanting something wonderful, getting mediocrity and disappointment instead, and then having to frantically search for something I enjoyed just to keep from spiraling into a pit of fanhood despair. Like - Rebels has precious Loth-cats, Rogue One has amazing Vader scenes, the sequel trilogy has a fun orange droid and a hotshot pilot who loves him and also makes hilarious prank calls on the side...but those are just little crumbs. Consolation prizes in a vast desert of WTF. I’d truly forgotten what it’s like to get new canon material for one of my fandoms, tune in weary and wary and desperately hopeful...and then spend the entire time feeling joy. Like, I am literally fighting back tears typing this post because I’d fucking forgotten how amazing this feels, and I know this makes me a gigantic loser, but I’m pretty much okay with that.

Nothing will ever make me love pre-Disney Star Wars any less, and there’s definitely not anything that will diminish my love for the wonderful goofballs I’ve met in this fandom. It’s not even remotely about that. (Like, seriously, the wonderful people in the SW fandom are the main reason why I’m still active in it. My gripe/revelation pertains solely to canon material.) And hell, maybe tonight’s XF ep will be the only good one of the season, and the rest of it is destined to be its own vast desert of WTF. I can handle that. But tonight’s episode was a beautiful wonderful sparkling oasis, and I’d forgotten what it’s like to be immersed in one of those when I’ve spent so long surviving off questionably potable vaporator water with Mickey Mouse’s unhallowed ears branded on the bottle.

Alright, I’m done making stupid analogies now. I fully realize I need to hold up an Anakin Skywalker “I hate sand” meme to make fun of myself. I admit and accept this completely.
