Announcing the Spirit Parade character design contest winners...!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered! It was really tough deciding between such strong entrants, but we’re here to announce the winners. These characters will be seen in the Underworld routes of the game!

Name: Iwao

Yogoe: Inugami

Iwao is a death god that generally deals with the souls of animals, he has an intimidating appearance but is much more friendly after talking to him. He was the family dog of a nobleman that was kidnapped for ransom money from his owner but was inevitably killed.

Feedback: (Rins) I immediately fell in love with this design! My first thought was “Wow, what a dapper dog”. I hadn’t expected to receive an entry like this and was pleasantly surprised at the creativity and by the sleekness of the design. He fits in nicely with the Underworld cast and makes the perfect foil to Diaochan, which players will understand why once Diaochan’s route is released. In addition to that, I felt that despite his tragic backstory and the fact that he was still able to keep a friendly personality, he would play nicely in helping shape Nara’s growth as a character as well.

(Lore) I love how creative this design is! Although art wasn’t necessary for the contest, it definitely helped us to see your vision for this character. I liked the cute little puppy form you drew, as well! I think that Iwao will be a really nice fit into the cast of characters, especially alongside Diaochan. Shuye and Haiyue are able to play off each other, but Diaochan was missing someone to have that kind of dynamic with. And now they’ve got someone! Plus, I love the whole idea of a cat and a dog being paired together in the story like that. I’m so excited to write Iwao’s scenes.

Name: The Lucky Turtle

Yogoe: ...see above

The Lucky Turtle will walk around town to collect red envelopes of money; sometimes it’ll sleep in random places so people can throw envelopes inside their shell without waking the turtle up. When returning to the Underworld, the turtle ‘‘opens’’ its shell, checks each of the envelopes, and works their magic. Kind & friendly. Sleeps a lot & walks very slow. It goes to Mr. Don’s restaurant a lot to eat but often has to have leftovers taken out because it eats way too slow.

Feedback: (Rins) First off, I have to praise how nicely done the art is! The coloring and overall design are very eye-catching and the idea of a walking, talking turtle in the Underworld is just adorable! The personality is quirky and cute and I think the Lucky Turtle will make a wonderful addition to the Underworld cast. We already have ideas brewing in our heads for this little guy!

(Lore) I was very inspired by this turtle, haha. It’s very cute and I think will end up playing a big role in the Underworld mini-game. It’s a good way to show that there’s more to the Underworld than just death gods and judgment going on. The Lucky Turtle will definitely fit in well with everyone and I can’t wait to see what you all think of him in-game!
