The Entertainment Software Association has officially announced that The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), once held every summer as the games industry’s biggest convention, is officially dead.
After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye. Thanks for the memories. GGWP
“We know the entire industry, players and creators alike, have a lot of passion for E3,” said Entertainment Software Association president Stanley Pierre-Louis told The Washington Post. “We share that passion. We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but it’s the right thing to do given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners.”

Oh man, with Gamefest coming up this Friday and after reading Geoff's post, I'm like...what games should I be even hyped about anymore?? ;___; No Evil Within 3, certainly no Elder Scrolls 6 that's for sure, unless Todd comes out, puts a teaser and lies about it again, the KOTOR remake is definitively canned, Bloodlines 2 is still stuck somewhere...So unless Biowere finally FINALLY shows something for Dragon Age Dreadwolf or new Mass Effect, I don't think there's gonna be any big reveals? Ughh the Gaming industry continues to be stupid and greedy when it comes to AAA.
Still, I'm always up for new IPs and indies so at least I'm looking forward to those. I'm gonna be tagging my spamming posts when the opening panel starts just a heads up!

Thoughts on the Xbox showcase?
Probably the strongest one of the summer so far. I skipped Ubisoft, because its Ubisoft, but compared to how much Geoff Keighley patted himself on the back, and how Sony completely underhand-pitched their show, Microsoft's felt the most "normal." It felt the most like E3.
Like, not all the games are blow-the-doors-off blockbusters. But it felt like more effort than the two to precede it. But, like, let's take this handy infographic Microsoft provides:
Tumblr media
No interest in Call of Duty. No interest in Diablo 4. No interest in Fallout 76. Or The Elder Scrolls Online. Or Life is Strange bringing back Max Caulfield because it's none of the original developers doing it. Don't care about Starfield.
Indiana Jones continues to look charming, I guess. I dunno. They focused on one particular cutscene and the editing felt all weird; like they cut it down for time. Some of the shifts in tone felt really weird and even during the slower parts the pacing was all over the place. I'm still interested in that game but at this point I need to see a big chunk of uninterrupted gameplay. Like a ten minute segment or something.
I'll echo what some have said and that behind the scenes stuff surrounding Perfect Dark has sounded very weird. I'm gonna miss the campy British Dr. Who style science fiction from the first game, but at least I'm interested in seeing if Eidos sticks the landing.
A Gears of War prequel... meh, sure, I guess. Though it's pretty weird coming off of Gears 5, which not only ends on a cliffhanger, it ends on a split cliffhanger where you're asked to make a choice near the end of the game. Both choices lead to slightly different, borderline "finish the fight!" style endings, where there are some pretty big dangling plot threads. Rewinding back to after the COG Wars, but before Gears 1 starts is... a choice.
I've never been able to connect to Avowed, but Flintlock, Atomfall and Expedition 33 seem interesting.
I'm torn on Doom: The Dark Ages. When he picked up a shotgun I got kind of let down. I expected a little more medieval flavor. Hopefully it's not so messy as Doom Eternal.
And I really need to play Metal Gear Solid 3. Not this version, the original, though it's nice to hear David Hayter back in Snake's shoes again. Weird they made him more scruffy and younger looking, but I'm not complaining.

Marketers are Morons
E3 is dead, but suits still need to get their fix for both their crippling gambling addiction and their exhibitionist fetish somewhere, so you know what time it is! It’s… a random weekend in June.
That’s right, with no real reason or cohesion to onlookers, this just happens to be the exact moment when all the executives could no longer hold it in and had to bust all over Twitch, which is much easier nowadays thanks to the camwhore apocalypse. As such, we have a fuckton of new trailers and other assorted trailer-like homunculi to pour over as the good little consumer piggies we are.
But the past few years, the ads have seemed increasingly unlikely to stir any excitement. Trailers are more cookie-cutter than ever, and actual gameplay reveals are a disappearing art. And much like last time when I complained about gaming news, all the developers actually making the games are mysteriously absent. Yes, you read that right, this blog has continuity now! Look forward to the blogomatic universe announcement later this year.
Looking back at E3s of old, these new events are cheaper, more condensed, more accessible and entirely controlled by the corporations and not vulnerable to the oh-so-familiar gaffes of live shows. Yet they still happen just as rarely as E3. Somehow the genius executives at the top have decided that, you know, instead of letting people know what’s happening more often and spreading the games accordingly to give them all room to breathe, we stuff even more crap into a shorter timespan and as a result nobody even remembers what we saw two days later.
Confoundingly we’ve decided that now gameplay reveals are also trailers. Both Perfect Dark and That Indiana Jones Thing Because Disney Has To Stay Relevant™ had “gameplay reveals”, but both were some sort of amalgamation of gameplay clips strung together and overlaid with the same piano-inception horn trailer music trash every other trailer was full of. Why even bother? Just cut out the middleman and show us a CGI video clip at that point for all the difference that makes.
I’m honestly a little confused about what all the suits even do all day. They’re paid exorbitant sums of money and all they can come up with is the same shit all their friends and THEMSELVES have been doing for years. Does the marketing team also double as the company’s cocaine quality assurance wing? Presumably the business school all these clowns come from is equally tilted in their goals, since I’d imagine “don’t immediately shoot your product in the foot” and “don’t make your product look as undesirable as possible” would rank fairly high on a business 101 class’ Don’t-Fuck-It-up-o-meter. Alongside wisdom like “don’t burn all your money like Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight”.
I feel the early onset Old Man Syndrome setting in again. Last time it was gaming magazines/news, this time it’s gaming events. There’s another one about marketing and gameplay gifs on social media that I think I’ll save for later. It’s a little frustrating that consistently I hit the same issues with the consideration of “it worked so much better before, what the fuck happened?”
Many complain about E3 et al. being just loaded advertising breaks, but the truth is, even in a moneyless society marketing would still be needed to let people know your artwork exists. A marketing campaign doesn’t just exist to sell you on something monetarily, but also timewise. Even if a game was free, the time commitment still means that you’ll filter out a lot of art unless you know it’s worth your time.
It’s a little disappointing that a theoretically better and more accessible system still makes me miss the haphazard cringefest that was E3, but a well oiled marketing machine also completely lacks the humanity that this medium so sorely needs right now. So please, bring it back. E3 needs to exist for this industry’s long term survival.
And also the E3 bingo cards. Those are the most important bit.

The Entertainment Software Association has announced that E3 2023 has been canceled.
The organization announced the cancellation via an email sent out to its members today. The email said that while E3 "remains a beloved event and brand" that the 2023 version "simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry."
The ESA concludes the email by reiterating its commitment to advocacy work. It does not mention undertaking the show again in future years.
The ESA issued the following public statement from Kyle Marsden-Kish, Global VP of Gaming, ReedPop:
This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome. For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve and that you’ve come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences.
The press release adds that ReedPop and the ESA will continue to work together on "future E3 events."

E3 is Dead
youtube
E3 was once the epicenter of video game news. Sadly, E3 became less and less relevant over the years with the rise of social media and publishers holding their own digital showcases.
