Shulk Xenoblade Chronicles is truly one of the greatest fucking video game protagonists of all time. He’s introduced as just this wet fucking nerd who stays inside all day and messes around with robots and machines and is almost completely oblivious to the looming threat of robot invasion cuz he’s too busy staring at the alien laser sword that he keeps unsecured in his apartment and hoping that it will do something cool. Then he witnesses one atrocity and immediately flies off the fucking rails and decides that he’s not going to calm down until every single robot in the world is dead. He literally does not pump the breaks until 50 hours into the game and then after that he makes it his singular mission to kill God. He wakes up, declares that he’s going to either kill God or become him, fucking *succeeds* with this goal and then goes home and immediately starts making machines again cuz he’s still a wet fucking nerd who likes robots.

Shulk Xenoblade Chronicled rewrites the fabric of the universe and goes home and starts fixing watches or whatever. He canonically has a phobia of caterpillars. He was dragged onto an arctic expedition as a five year old for no fucking reason. He jumped off the edge of the earth with zero hesitation and never once thought in retrospect about how that might have been a bad idea. He’s an orphan and that is the least fucked up part about his backstory. He died ten years ago and didn’t realize so he’s just walking around still. He has God in his brain shouting at him trying to get him to commit genocide and manages to avoid falling to darkness cuz he’s just to damn oblivious to even realize that he has another fucking voice in his brain. His adopted father is a round furry who is 1/5th his size and in crippling debt. This technically means he has 12 other step-siblings. He gave up being a god and there’s a non-zero chance that he’s still some kind of divine cross-dimensional force. He managed to save the world while also being British! Incredible.

I beat Xenoblade 3 last night. Tears were shed. Spoilers under the cut for my thought about something specific in the ending cutscenes.

God, the part where the worlds are about to split apart again is heart-wrenching. Not only are Ouroboros saying their last goodbyes (Taion in particular getting to me the most, both cuz he's my fave and because he went through the painstaking effort to make sure everything making up the physical recipe for his herbal tea for Eunie was all material found in the XBC1 world so it wouldn't get ripped away from her), but that visual of all of them running to each other as the ground is literally pulled backwards under their feet, less than a yard or meter from their counterpart but unable to get any closer while they're on some cruel double-sided cosmic treadmill that will never slow down for them...

i am so so sorry for what you're going to experience. xb2 is hands down the worst in the series. parts of it are amazing and other parts make me want to grab and shake whoever wrote it until they vomit.

nia is great though and honestly the party in 2 overall is p good! i have a lot of criticism to do with 2 and how it handles some things, but in broad strokes the main party is pretty great. mostly.

the post-credit cutscene fills the entire system with an unquenchable rage which makes sense when you see it.

Yeah me doing some more ranting of XBC3 cause, just damn it all they really didn’t need to screw up stuff this badly. Just trying to blow off some steam since I don’t think many people think about this. Remember, SPOILER stuff.

So at the end of 3 Noah throws his sword away. Always though it was strange since doing that wouldn’t matter cause everything is going back the way it was before all this crazy stuff happened. Strange but never bothered me. Then in the DLC story you learn the importance of it and the people connected to it. First of all to have that in the DLC seems doubt like you just made shit up there to make it more important. And two, for it to carry that kind of meaning makes Noah look like a shitbag. Oh the sword carries the souls of the rest of the XBC1 party and the red sheath implied to have Pyra/Mythra’s core crystal... well fuck this shit we’re going to end it by tossing it. Yeah world being fix makes this action amount to nothing, but the act itself carries the weight of just discarding what the other games were just to look cool. But only makes Noah look bad in the end. The DLC really just made me want to punch Noah for doing that.

Now this part I’m not too sure of since I don’t recall it being noted in any, but I hear that N’s sword has some connection to Logos. Which if true is again really bad story telling. I don’t just mean the lack of narrative but just the impossibility of it all. Malos, the blade form of Logos met his end in the space station with said station getting destroyed. How in the heck can anything of his be recovered since his crystal was likely smashed to bits, and most of all would end up floating in space?

Oh, and Pyra and Mythra’s core crystal being in Matthew’s gloves makes no sense. Yeah just throw them there as if that just wasn’t stupid and AGAIN making them manage the whole Origin thing would have ended with no problems. As if the reveal at the end of Future Redeemed was meant to be a shockingly cool moment. But then you stop to think about it the moment is just dumb.

Also I keep hearing that this was meant to end the whole Klaus thing in relation to Xenoblade, but in reality..... not really. Sure the developers can keep saying it to the cows come home, but with how bad the story was doesn’t make it feel real. Like it all finished with Xenoblade 2 with no reason for 3′s plot. At least with a series like Kingdom Hearts there has at least been clues that there is more to come regardless to how crazy the story gets. But with 3... you can just cut it out of existence as a game and the XBC1 and XBC2 wouldn’t suffer from it. After all the universe of XBC1 shows a world that was created as if it was an act of god, and the universe of XBC2 shows a world were the old world was laid to ruin and a new system for the world to work was built on top of that. Nothing that gives the faintest idea that these two worlds were something split apart. Hell if the “split apart” thing had some credibility why didn’t Klaus of XCB2 just tell them, “Oh yeah something important this world is one of two made of opposing matter so soon it’s going to get pulled back again resulting in everything being wiped from existence. Got that? Okay cool, peace out.” So they made a plot that had no solid ground to exist and they want it to be all done. Which is strange because I remember one thing that came from the universe experiment that never showed any result of. I remember Klaus noting at in the wake of his experiment many people in the world were taken to different dimensions (yes that is plural so this can’t be a case of them going to the world of XBC1 if anyone would be so dumb to think that) so could have shown the result of that and what came to be. But that would be good story telling that would work on ideas that came before and for some reason we can’t have that.

For Alpha’s plot..... how the fuck does it make any sense? So he wanted to take the City people to a new world, and getting rid of everything else in the Xenoblade 3 world. Since it was Moebius keeping the world as it was would naturally fix things but Origin that was made to fix things would be in Alpha’s control and not fixing them so the worlds would be doomed to become all light meaning there would be nothing for Alpha to make a new world for. For a machine that was a part of a grand super computer called the Trinity Processor which should at least be smart enough to figure things out can’t seem to think that this is a bad idea. Cause what was Alpha meant to do in this case? Warp to another universe? I can’t imagine that happening. And for anyone who thinks, “it’s possible cause in XBC2 it was said that Ontos pretty much warped to the XBC1 world” For one that was himself doing that, not taking anything along with him and two, remember that there was a central thing to the experiment that was revealed in XBC2 being the Conduit, the source of power that allowed it all to happen. I would think that would have the power to do something big enough but Alpha himself with a machine that isn’t made to jump to another universe is likely to do this.

This just came to me as I was make this.... but why does Origin have a bloody FACE of all things? Just why, when I think of Origin I recall that dumb look of a mecha face on it for a machine that is just a sphere and I’m like... what’s the point?

Seriously this game isn’t written like people know how the story of the previous game worked. Xenoblade 3 just feels like some poorly written fanfic that was given the green light to be officially made.

OK OK OK OK. I MEANT TO GET TO THIS SOONER BUT THEN I GOT CARRIED AWAY WITH SOME ZINES AND SOME OTHER PROJECTS. BUT, I just finished speedrunning the game for my sibling to catch them up, Future Redeemed comes out tomorrow, I am Not A Normal Person About This Game.

Spoilers below, not particularly thought out bc i've given myself a headache from finishing the game and sobbing my eyes out again as of 3 hours ago

I. Genuinely have a lot of thoughts and they've changed a bit since it was announced and the subsequent trailers we've had, as well as refreshing myself on XBC1 and XBC2 lore since then. I will start with my joke theory, For the longest time I had a joke that boiled down to "Alvis is Riku and he's really enjoying larping as a nopon rn." Why the fuck would that nopon know so much. NOW, I'm more in the "give me the name of your god you nopon piece of shit." who is this fucker loyal to. IS IT MELIA? IM P SURE ITS MELIA. BUT LIKE. STILL WHO TF IS HE. WHY DOES HE KNOW SO MUCH. WHAT HAS HE BEEN UP TO.

Also! I'm not actually sure how I'm feeling on this game being a prequel! I'm not fully convinced it is yet even though thats EXACTLY what it looks like. Part of me really wants an epilogue to the base game's story or at MOST something that is running concurrently. It's not that I dislike prequels, I LOVED torna i've genuinely played torna all the way through upwards of 6 times by now. It's just really enjoyable. I just kinda wanna know what happens...AFTER the plot. But I'm not gonna be DISAPPOINTED if it genuinely turns out to be a prequel.

Jokes/wishful thinkin aside, I wonder if Ontos will be playing a role in this. Alvis claims to be from a long line of seers, I wondered if maybe the Processor that is Ontos has just been spitting out random entities and A + the mystery White Alvis are just consequences. I wanna know how Z ties into that. I also wanna know where everyone..IS. Like, where is Fiora or Reyn, or Pyra and Mythra, or even fucking Morag or Tora. No mention of them, so i'm curious to know...why. Shulk is clearly Shulk here, and Rex is clearly Rex, If they aren't part of the cycle there HAS to be an explanation as to how they're in Aionios and what happened to everyone else, right?

I'm excited to see what's up on that front though. I refuse to believe that Alvis has become evil, not because I think it's implausible, but just because i dont want that evil Alvis to be Alvis because his concept art is WHITE. My opinions on Alvis being DIRECTLY Ontos have shifted to being a bit more..flexible on the concept because of A and the revealed mystery character, but in my heart he's still directly Ontos and I hope the Shalvis Divorce Arc ends happily.

Wishful thinking, of course, is that i'd like to see the Trinity Processors reunited in some way, shape, or form. I love joking about Aegis Sibling Family Reunions/Learning Where tf Ontos is, but I'll admit the ending of xbc2 is a bit ambiguous on what exactly happens with Logos and Pneuma and how that relates to Ontos OR the continued existence of Pyra and Mythra. I'll actually be really sad if there's no way they can be reunited/bummed if something's happened to Pyra and Mythra as of a result of the ending of xbc2. I just kinda want Malos to get a minor redemption arc or st least know if the Logos and Pneuma cores of the Trinity Processor was relevant at all.

BUT YEAH. IM SO EXCITED. VERY, VERY EXCITED. I'm sad this is the end of the Klaus arc of Xenoblade/the Xeno series, but I'm excited to see where we go next! If this wave 4 dlc is even remotely as good as base xbc3, it'll be an excellent ending to such a good series!
