I mean, the "real" reason is that it's a common trope used to add drama to the story.

But in-universe, the reason is usually because that character 1) doesn't want to be a burden, 2) is in denial that something is wrong, 3) has some kind of medical trauma or deep distrust of doctors, or 4) thinks they can weather the illness/injury on their own.

It's obviously illogical, but depending on how the character usually acts, it might still be the most likely reaction they themselves would have.

Question: When characters have health concerns - physical or mental - why is their immediate reaction "hide from everybody" and not "fuck I should probably see a doctor huh."

If I suddenly started coughing uncontrollably or having lapses in memory I'm pretty sure I'd think "fuck I should probably see a doctor huh."
