Wyrmhaven Guide

This blog is about a "Strixhaven" game - that title is in quotes because our lovely DM has added some many homebrew NPCs and events that we're approaching Strixhaven of Theseus territory here - if you add a bunch of new content to a DnD module, at what point is it even the same game? The point of this blog isn't to answer this question, it's to enjoy the ride and hopefully share that joy with others. There is a lot of NPCs that are not in the base module, so if you see a name you don't recognize from the base module, chances are they were homebrewed in.

THE SETTING This game takes place in a world known as Kharas, in a city-state called Lux Concordia. The Strixhaven Academy has been renamed to the Wyrm Academy to fit in with the DM's existing worldbuilding, and the headmaster has been replaced with a woman known as Archjusticar Yasha. Lux Concordia is a city of towers built upon several other iterations of itself, and is approaching industrial revolution levels of technology. The layout of the Academy itself is similar to the module, although it is now dominated by a central tower known as the Hexpiral Tower that holds most of the classrooms, and all of the Dragon House Demiplanes There are several other locations of note in this world:

Valtahost, a more technologically advanced empire and Lux Concordia's bitter enemy

The Orzkhov Union, a nation run by vampires

THE PLAYER CHARACTERS Carmilla - Our dhampir warlock/bard who claims to be a vampire despite only being a dhampir. Her patron is a enigmatic figure known as "All Ravens" who lives in the Shadowfell Doya - Our aasimar monk who is a bit over her head in this magic academy Rin - Our roadent (homebrew rat race) sorcerer who thought he was a wizard, but was actually imbued with magic by a tome that his adventurer brother gave him White - Our changeling wizard who doesn't know much of their own past. They are genderfluid, but will be referred to as he/him in the logs for the sake of consistency Zoey - Our bard/warlock with a knack for creating crimes against nature PLAYER FAMILIARS Guillermo - One of Carmilla's raven familiars, who works with different game mechanics than most familiars Nandor - The other one of Carmilla's raven familiars, who is technically a shape-shifted imp Ra - White's hairless cat familiar "La Creatura/The Creature in the Hat" - a strange creature that lives in Zoey's hat. We still don't know what it's deal is Sproing/Slash/Puff/so many others - Zoey's familiars. She goes through them quickly, as all her familiars are doomed to die despite her best efforts

MAJOR HOMEBREW STUDENT NPCs "The Angels" - a trio of popular girls who bully the player characters relentlessly. A parody of the Heathers from the movie of the same name Angelika - An aasimar sorcerer, and the leader of the three Angels. Thinks she is queen of the school, and might as well be Angelique - An elven wizard, and the smart one of the Angels. Always has perfect grades Anjarika AKA Anji - A genasi warlock, and the pretty one of the Angels. Has a lot of suitors, but not a lot of thoughts

"Missing Peace" - A band of four girls whose music is similar to what we would call Punk Rock Asher - A tiefling bard who is the lead singer of Missing Peace that lives up the punk rock image Amalie - An aasimar bard who is the lutist of Missing Peace that seems surprisingly gentle considering her choice of music Larksann - A gnome artificer with a mechanical backpack who is the drummer of Missing Peace and is incredibly anxious. Occasionally a PC when one of our OOC friends wants to join in Mailu - An elven sorcerer with an affinity for pyrotechnics who is the bassist for Missing Peace

Chadriz - A Mage Tower player with a bone to pick with just about everyone. The resident bully Dawn - A kalashtar sorcerer, who is friends with multiple PCs and just about anyone else she talks to Dismay & Violence - A pair of goth tiefling twins would would rather not get caught up in all this drama Max - A human ranger who considers himself a superhero. Has a pet chicken who is his sidekick, which he calls Wonder Chicken Nicollin - A dhampir wizard who is Carmilla's friend, but also inexplicably friends with multiple other PCs despite being the most boring person alive Pain - A tiefling warlock, and the academy's resident bad boy "Sunny" - A halfling bard who comes from a family associated with organized crime, but would rather distance himself from it

MAJOR HOMEBREW FACULTY Archjusticar Yasha - The eladrin headmaster of the Academy who is eternally stuck in her winter form. Cold as ice. Professor Nadia - An elven PC from a previous game, now the physical education teacher for the academy

Boss Room

Pax Mitemouth, head goblin of the Wyrmhaven Deep Dungeon Comittee, said. "The heroes have reached the lowest level? Why is this a problem?"

The secretary goblin replied, "We haven't even placed a final boss there yet!"

Pax's eyes bulged. "But you've had three years to get that room ready! How are you not done yet?"

"Well," said the secretary, "we decided to place a bike shed outside the boss room, but we couldn't decide what color to paint it…."

Wyrmhaven, a small island far to the north-west of Morrowind that plays home to a small city, the North Empire Trading Company, and an order of knights known as the Order of Kynareth. So last night in our D&D campaign (the giant robot fantasy one, not the spoopy Tim Burton one), we were dealing with a pair of fairly underhanded people we needed to extract/secure a promise from.

While my rogue gave her old friends a dressing-down, our wizard leaned in and said he could make sure they did what they said they’d do. So I handed it over to him. He waved his hands around, there was spooky smoke and flames, then he took both their hands and told them about a horrible curse that makes rot grubs burrow up through your feet and eat through your living body until they devour your heart - but as long as they keep their promise they’ll never need to know how agonizing that is.

Which just goes to show that prestidigitation can be devastatingly powerful when paired with solid improv.

Undead Game Show

Pax Mitemouth sat at a conference table, surrounded by members of the Wyrmhaven Deep Dungeon Improvement Comittee.

"Our first game shows were failures," he said. "But I still think a good adventurer game show will enhance our dungeon. Any suggestions?"

Nyx adjusted his glasses. "I'm thinking an undead game show where the goal is to guess how much gold and copper a given undead creature is carrying."

"Ooh, that sounds interesting," said Pax. "What do we call it?"

"The Price is Wight!"

At the Lute and Pillage

Anika the thief sat at the bar in the Lute and Pillage Tavern, nursing her ale. She glanced up at the bartender. "I'm looking," she said, "for adventure…."

The bartender cleaned a glass. "I hear tell," he replied, "that there's treasure in Wyrmhaven Deep…."

The thief sighed. "Wyrmhaven Deep! Wyrmhaven Deep! Every tip you give me leads to that stupid dungeon!"

The bartender shrugged. "What do you expect? We're a Wyrmhaven Deep corporate sponsor."

Boss Room

"A game show?" Krag Orkcrusher looked confused.

"That's right!" exclaimed the goblin in the tuxedo holding a microphone. "It's our way to try to add some fun atmosphere to the Wyrmhaven Deep dungeon! Now, we call this game: Wait, Wait, Don't Kill Me…."

Later in the Lute and Pillage Tavern, Krag said, "So then I killed him."

Food Court

"Welcome," said the well-dressed goblin, "to Wyrmhaven Deep's Food Court!"

Anika stared. "A food court… in a dungeon?"

"Indeed! Why not try Gar's Pizza - Goblin-style: cavern mushrooms, lichen sauce, and quality rat sausage…."

Sven looked pale. "We'll pass."

"Perhaps Org's Meat Pie Surprise? Their motto: It's probably no one you know."

"I think," said Anika, "we'll try Cinnebomb."

The goblin blinked. "Explosive cinnamon rolls? You shouldn't eat Dwarven battle bread!"

One Million

Confetti rained down. A goblin in a tuxedo stepped forward. "Congratulations! You are the one millionth adventurer to Wyrmhaven Deep Dungeon!" He held out a microphone. "What's your name, good Sir?"

"Uh… Krag Orkcrusher?" the grizzled warrior replied.

"I wish to present you with this plaque…."

Krag stabbed the emcee in the arm, grabbed the plaque, and ran off.

The goblin winced. "Well… don't know what else I was expecting from an expert pillager…."

Anika stared at a goblin in whiteface.

"I'm the clown of Wyrmhaven Deep Dungeon!" The goblin honked his red nose. "Management seeks to enhance the adventuring experience! Care for a balloon animal?"

The thief frowned. "We're here to slay monsters and steal… er, claim their treasure. We don't need a clown."

"Then you don't want a Frequent Adventurer Card?" asked the clown. "After ten punches you get a free treasure chest…."

The card was snatched from his hand, too fast to see.

Diva Donuts

Anika stared at the box full of pastries. "Donuts?"

"It was my turn to provide snacks," replied Kaylithia.

Anika frowned. "Where in god's green earth did you get donuts?"

"From Diva Donuts in Scalesong Keep," said Kaylithia. "Are you saying you don't want any?"

"I didn't say that. It's just - we're seven levels down in the Wyrmhaven Deep dungeon…."

"Yes, and I am a wizard," said Kaylithia. "Your point?"
