Stuck in love is officially one of the best movies I've ever watched. Ik the name sounds cheesy and like every other rom-com name ever but believe me it's so good. I think it was because of the great (really really great) actors and the mood-setting music. Genuinely a great watch. I personally related to it so much.

Samantha's commitment issues? Yep. Yes. I got that yk.

Just everything about it was...true. Real. I loved all the couples and God Rusty deserved so much better. I cried so hard during the car scene (iykyk). I could feel the emotions literally wafting off the screen. The acting was nothing short of phenomenal. And Louis's mother part was also very very good. (Like how is that possible? How do actors become the person they're portraying? It's so so beautiful.) Oh I love that they're writers too. The mother-daughter thing really really touched my heart because well I'm not the greatest child to my mother. All mothers deserve better. This one line really hit deep.

"She's all I've done with my life and she doesn't want me." -Erica says this.

Backstory: (spoiler alert) See, she left her hushband and married another man. And her daughter is angry with her cause her dad is suffering and still waiting for Erica to come back after 3 years. Yes, the man she married was the man she cheated on her hushband with while they were not yet divorced. You can see how that would've affected Samantha. See, I'm not saying Erica herself is a good person (she is though. It's compliacated. You've to watch the movie to understand) but she is a mother and really, if you watch it, you can see that she loves her children with all her heart. And Sam is ruthless. I related so so much with her cause I get angry really quick during arguments with my mother and say very harsh things. I realised that it hurts them a 100 times worse than we intended it to hurt. That's just how mothers feel. Their children are literally all they are (I'm exaggerating but you get the point). It feels like they're dying when you hurt them even in the slightest bit cause they're living for you. You're all there is. That's what I got from the movie anyways. And i know that it's the same case with my mother.

Me and my brother, We're both leaving her soon. I'm going away for college and my brother is a senior. So, yeah. It's bad yk? She constantly says "How am I going to be without you?". Everyday.

Now, Louis's mother part. When (spoiler) she died, I felt it hit me right in the face. I imagined how I would feel if my own mother died and let's just say I was sobbing. Like hard sobs with shoulders shaking. I realised how important she is to me and how she is a major part of who I am. She's everything. Nothing makes sense without her. I'm fully meaning every word I say. My mother's life is not the best. People are constantly pushing her down. She's a home-maker. It's not fair how people treat her (by people I mean my family ofc) She's dedicated her life for me and my brother. All of us, the whole family. I can't imagine a life like that. I would not survive.

I got real deep but it's something I had to get down in writing. Who knows maybe I'll show this to my mom someday. She'll be the happiest person on this earth when she reads this, I'm sure. Shower your mothers with love! That's all they need from you.

Okay no I need to talk about the book version of Howl's Moving Castle. I love the movie but the book has such a different vibe and you, yes you, should read it.

Movie Howl is a soulful and quiet. Book Howl is a drama queen and Causing Problems and has a long string of jilted exes and couldn't shut up if you paid him.

Sophie and Howl drive each other up the wall at the beginning and it's really funny. Sophie and Howl are (despite themselves) very much in love by the end and they still drive each other up the wall and it's even funnier.

In the movie, Howl has been ordered by the king to participate in The War, and Howl is avoiding it because he is a brave conscientious objector. In the book, Howl has been ordered by the king to rescue his lost brother from the Witch of the Wastes, and Howl is avoiding it by any means necessary because he is a cowardly weasel who wants to stay as far from the Witch as possible.

In the movie, the Witch cursed Sophie because she was jealous about Howl speaking to Sophie for five minutes. In the book, the Witch cursed Sophie because Sophie had been doing surprisingly powerful magic for years without knowing it and it was actually starting to cut into the Witch's plans. (Sophie does not discover any of this until nearly the end of the book, but the reader can start to pick it up much earlier and the way Sophie's magic works is pretty darn cool.)

In the movie, there's a rumor that Howl eats the hearts of maidens, but this is implied to be nothing but nasty fearmongering. In the book, there's a rumor that Howl eats the hearts of maidens because Howl started the rumor so people would stop asking him to do wizard junk all the time.

The book lightly parodies a couple of tropes from Western fairy tales. In particular Sophie has internalized that, as the eldest of three sisters, her "destiny" is to fail so that her younger sisters will look cooler when they succeed, which is why she's so resigned to the hat shop at the beginning. (Sidebar: Sophie's sisters come up much more in the book and they're great.) There's also a really funny bit where Sophie attempts to operate a pair of seven-league boots.

In the movie, the fourth and final location that the magic door connects to is some sort of black void / mindscape / time portal dealy. In the book the fourth location is Wales, in the UK, on Earth, so that Howl can visit his family, because from Howl's perspective this is an isekai story.

HEY ITS THE AFTG BIG BANG

I had the absolute pleasure of working with @beyondtheperfectcourt on their speed skating au fic Go Fast; Turn Left ! It’s got skating foxes, it’s got Neil being speedy, it’s got sign language speaker Andrew, and yet more good stuff! Ok so a few years back I read this post by @contradictionaddiction and I love the idea that Megan was as much a fantasy fan as Howl in their teens, she canonically has a Rivendell sign in her yard!!!

And i find the implication that she resents him about his life choices so interesting because she probably had to become the responsible and respectable sibling in the family while Howl did what he wanted.

Since Howl loves to bring gifts to his nephew and niece, id like to imagine him gifting Neil a Tolkien book set with lovely illustrations on his birthday but who's to say it's not also for Megan :) Howl wouldn't outright gift Megan their childhood favorite books since they're not getting along too well anymore but he could do it via Neil...Maybe she picks them up again at some point.

My confessions (cause I really feel the need to get these off my chest. They're not that deep but kinda silly and funny ig)

1, One girl in my class had a very cool pencil case. Every kid in my class swooned over it. I was jealous so I legit took the case and threw it out of the window 💀 I was very subtle about it tho. But they did somehow find out that it was me. I never confessed so I got off easy.

2, I'm in third grade. Our friend group was me, another dude and two girls. See, this was kinda my gay awakening I think (emphasis on kinda). I wrote "I love you" on a piece of paper and wanted to give it to the dude. But I didn't wanna do it myself. (Keep in mind that this dude was NOT CUTE. I feel very mean for saying this, but he just was not the cutest little kid ever ok?!) So I asked one of my girl friends to deliver the note to him (I was such a bossy little bitch 😭) and she did. AND YOU KNOW WHAT HE DID?! He got up, went to the teacher and COMPLAINED that I proposed to him. The teacher prolly found it funny now that I think about it but, it was real scary at the time because I felt like I had done something illegal. God it was so bad. And you're not gonna BELIEVE what happened next. The teacher called me up and asked me about it. I panicked and straight up lied that I wasn't the one who wrote it at all. I SAID THAT IT WAS THE GIRL WHO DELIVERED IT. Poor girl oh god. THEN, This teacher sent us to like a senior teacher and she asked the same questions. I continued to lie. I was so scared at this point. Then, the teacher went all serious, leaned forward, "Look here. If you don't tell the truth, I will take you to the principal's office. He's got a device that goes around your wrists and sets your hands on fire if you don't tell the truth. Do you really wanna go there?" I admitted then that it was me LMFAO it was so pathetic but c'mon man I was terrified. BUT now that I'm older, I can see why the teachers took this seriously. They were definitely homophobic like c'mon. Goodness gracious that girl hates me to this day.

Check to see if you have a 'bring your hair dryer to work with you' therapist.

I'm serious. I've been in and out of the mental healthcare system in the UK and US for over 20 years and if I have learned anything about clinicians it is that they divide care into "want to make the client "sane"" and "make the client able to live a comfortable/happy life" categories.

Let me explain.

The long and short is a person was struggling with obsessive compulsive disorder who worried that if they left their hair dryer plugged in then they would burn down their house. This had them disrupt their life to check on their fear and their clinician told them to bring the hair dryer to work with them so when the panic set in they could see the hair dryer was with them and it would soothe their fear with minimal disruption.

The blog post above goes into it. Mental healthcare professionals arguing over whether this was "enabling" and a detriment to healing and coping versus those who saw that the life disruption had been solved and it's okay for the client to not be healed if they can live their life.

So. Get a 'take your hair dryer to work' therapist. Ask yours about the hypothetical and see where their priorities lie. Are they trying to help you or heal you? They may sound like the same thing but they're not always. Ask yourself what you want from your circumstances?

We have DID and our therapist always treats us as individuals (something the DSM-V specifically warns clinicians against) because she saw how much damage it was doing for us to try and shift and change our behavior to be socially accepteable. It's better for our mental health to embrace "being insane" (my words, not hers) than to repress ourselves to the point of denying anyone the chance to get to know us.

Every clinician will carry baggage with them. That's just normal. But you got to know where their priorities lie. There's a lot of stigma in the mental health field. Knowing if they'd encourage you to act a little crazy for the sake of your peace and comfort helps.

I'm almost certainly sure that every time Sophie describes "that" smile Howl has that Lettie and his other past girlfriends have fallen for, he's actually just... smiling. No anger or moodiness, just a warm Howl's smile and nothing more.

But the whole story is that no matter how much she grumbles about how he shouldn't use his smile on all these people and what a jerk he is, the truth is that no one actually fell for it. Except for her. And no one finds that crooked grin all that attractive. Except for her.
