I had a Taylor Swift realisation today.

I’ve been struggling with being tough as a woman. How to be firm, how to say no, yet be polite, professional and progress. I feel like everything in media tells you to get ahead as a women you should shrink yourself. Get your head down, be sweet, smile whilst undercover rise up… but slowly. Don’t be threatening.

It’s not working for me. I’ve been trying it. Trying to be that way makes you feel bad for being ambitious. It makes you feel guilty for taking pride in your work. Selfish for wanting to take up space.

All of this has been on my mind. Then I watched Taylor Swift’s behind the scenes of All Too Well. I am a swiftie, no fan accounts, but I know every song and every single bit of lore (I have educated my boyfriend on her too).

In the video, it shows Taylor directing (not for the first time, she’s directed other music videos too). She’s professional, she says what she wants, she doesn’t shy away from taking up space and she motivates everyone on the set. It made me happy that she didn’t “stick to her lane” she’s multitalented, she’s ambitious. Doing what she loves and is curious about makes her, her.

Why do I squash myself? Ever? Why am I scared to take up space? If others don’t want me to take up space there, then I do not want to be there. Letting go of things that are not meant for me have only brought me better and better things.

Making myself small, or lowering my ambitions to make someone else comfortable, for them, that comforts them for maybe an hour, a few weeks, several months. Doing that to myself impacts me for a lifetime. It’s saying that making those people feel powerful is more important than letting my potential grow.

WWTSD? What would Taylor Swift do? Not that.

This doesn’t mean blowing shit up, it doesn’t mean not being apt, but it does mean sticking up for myself. It means not being under anyone’s shadow and it means forging my own path.

Since the entry I posted last week . . .

I saw the Bob Marley movie, One Love.

I felt the pain of my friends losing one of theirs, literally after he fell off.

Had an old friend find his way back to a good fellowship group (fingers crossed).

Had the transmission go bad in my work truck, while simultaneously having the means, and love to get it repaired.

Another member of my grandparents' generation passed. That number is super limited, and dwindling.

I watched Miss Americana, which made me like her even more. She's climbing the ranks of people I aspire to be like, love, respect, and why. (And she might be a superhero soon too, I mean, c'mon, could the universe be anymore obvious?).

I knew I was about love and peace, even gratitude, but am I Swiftie?

I mean, so far . . .it looks good.

Catching back up. I wrote that above the other day.

As an added bonus, I have granddaughters who adore her- Taylor Swift, I mean.

Her and her music, and who she is as a person, she obviously doesn't need my approval, but she has it.

Haters always gonna hate, but she is playing, and winning, I might add, and the only thing I'm seeing that we don't see eye to eye on is probably her religious affiliation.

But so, guess what she's in good company there, because she has that in common with a lot of my other inspirations(?), aspirations(?).

Calling them heroes seems mockingly pushing it, but maybe role models. Then again what's a hero to you? A champion? Maybe.

Looks like my grands have once again shown how truly smart they are, and if they continue to follow her, and people like her, and her ideals, I believe it'll take them far.

I'm even a fan of a few of her songs, and her ability to pull them into existence.

Look, I have struggle in my life still, just like most everyone else, but. . .

But, I'm still at peace, even grateful for most of the struggle.

And my deathbed regrets list stays small.

Wishing a similar perspective for everyone else, is still the life I'm striving for.

Life is wonderful, and life is short, and a lot of people will never understand too many of its . . .relevancies(?). They wash over and dilute what they think they need for them to get through.

It's the hardest pill to swallow.

The young though, they are our hope.

And, and I love that she finally came around to using her platform to encourage others to see life, similarly.

Just keep sharing your love and your laughter with the world around you, and I'll do the same.

And remember that being kind is one of the greatest things you can ever be.

The combination of my granddaughters liking her,, and them Chiefs (lol), and if I'm being honest (the haters hating), all made me a fan of Taylor Swift.

Swiftie? Well, only time will tell.

I did read a short story about her during last week's Pawpaw’s Storytime, for those of you that follow. If you get a chance, go check it out. Lol

An open letter to Taylor Swift

Taylor,

I know you have a crazy life and I know you’re busy. My 23rd birthday is next Wednesday and I’m totally lost... my days of being the magical 22 are almost over. I’ve listened to you since I was 12 years old... For 10 years you have guided me and inspired me to be the best I can be. You’ve made my laugh and helped dry my tears with your music. And now I just don’t know where to turn.

In 2015 I lost my grandmother and I thought I lost my soul. You’re music helped me push through. You are such a beautiful woman and so graceful. When we found out about your momma I just prayed and cried along with you. I know that’s a hard road. I can’t even imagine how that was for you.

After I lost Mimmie I didn’t know what to do. I went to Walt Disney World where I met this amazing person, Kasey. Yeah she said she met you! I was completely awestruck. We had so many adventures in Florida. We even saw you in Tampa for Halloween. I’ll never forget that night. Perfection. 

But anyway, I came back from Florida and had to figure things out all over again. I had this guy that I was dating through college. We met Freshman year and were friends for a while. He chased after me for 11 month... ELEVEN MONTHS. Can you believe that? You know how he won me over? He surprised me with tickets to see RED in concert in Nashville... I was so happy I cried. 

It’s been almost 4 years of us together. He actually proposed in August... But 9 weeks and 5 days ago he left. He left and didn’t give me a reason or an answer. My heart is broken. I don’t know what to do. I want to call him but I know it’s no use. Do I really want to give my love to someone who just threw it away? I don’t know. I cry, a lot. And I feel so alone. I wanted 22 to be the year of my life. And it really has been. It’s been amazing... All until that last 9 weeks. I feel ugly and wrong and like I’m never going to finish college. I listen to your music because it gets me through the day. You’ve always been so real. just so down to earth and full of wisdom. 

It’s almost my birthday and I feel so alone and so useless. How do I get through this? How do you get through this? You’re so strong. And your fans are like family... Where do I go now?
