The Unified IWGP World Heavyweight Championship just got revealed and...
Tumblr media
Yikes...
Okay, so it’s not the worst looking belt in the world, if it were a midcard belt like the TNT or the US title it’d pass, hell if it were the AEW Women’s title it’d pass simply by virtue of it being normally sized. But this is the unified version of the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental championships, two belts which had near iconic designs. And while that means it would be difficult to top, it was probably a bad idea to move away from that template so much.
In honesty, the only real problem I have is the middle. The square plates are fine and the idea of using a white strap with black borders is actually a great idea given how there was purpose to the previous belts having a black and white strap, but the middle kinda looks like a cheap belt buckle you’d buy at a festival that’ll snap after a few uses because it’s all just spray painted tin. The wings are okay and the words aren’t too jarring but I think the shape is all wrong, I dunno if they were hoping for a WWF Winged Eagle kinda design but it does not pull off and sadly it doesn’t quite look like a belt worth winning.

The new WWE 24/7 championship is a good example of the communication breakdown between the promotion and its audience.  On the one hand, I’m sure WWE is internally frustrated that the new title belt was booed from the get-go, since fans often clamor for new championships and express nostalgia for the “24/7 rule” associated with the old hardcore championship.  On the other hand, fans are in disbelief that WWE could so completely misunderstand their wishes.  The reality is that there were unrealistic expectations from both ends, although that shouldn’t cause WWE to blame it on fans being “fickle.”
The entire rollout of the 24/7 title was a disaster.  As soon as they announced Mick Foley would be introducing a new championship, the audience’s imagination went into overdrive.  Any given fan has dozens of ideas for new championships, driven in part by their nostalgia for earlier introductions of beloved titles and belts.  So right away the new title has to compete with all those possibilities, because WWE committed an unforced error.  Bringing in Foley just made things worse, because anyone who didn’t just wildly speculate ended up surmising that “Foley = hardcore title.”  Foley’s talk of getting “raw” again fueled the fantasies of fans who want to resurrect anything left behind in the Attitude Era.  But everything about the 24/7 belt suggests that WWE is explicitly trying to recreate the hardcore title without hardcore wrestling, so stoking those fantasies was counterproductive.
That said, fans probably should’ve known better than to get their hopes up.  A dedicated hardcore division is never going to happen now that WWE takes concussions so seriously.  Not that it matters--the idea of the WWF hardcore title representing excellence in garbage wrestling was pretty much dead by the time Crash Holly introduced the 24/7 rule in 2000.  From that point forward, most title changes amounted to a single chairshot to the head and a pin.  The title changes in the first day of the 24/7 championship largely amounted to a single forearm to the head and a pin.  So the spirit of Crash Holly’s hardcore title is certainly there, but now we’re going to be reminded that it got old after about four months.  (What really made that run special was Mike Lockwood--not the rules or the belt--and unfortunately he’s not coming back.)
The easy, not-so-hot take here would be to make the old “you can’t give fans what they think they want” excuse.  Fans wanted the 24/7 rule back, but as soon as they got it they hated it, right?  But blaming the fans for this is lazy.  First of all, it’s obvious that anyone who wanted the 24/7 rule specifically wanted the original “busted winged eagle belt covered in duct tape” hardcore championship--they wanted the nostalgia, not a reboot.  It’s abundantly clear that WWE has substantial reasons for not doing that, so it was always incumbent upon them to figure out how to defuse that demand by identifying a suitable alternative.  This would mean exploring the root motivation for fans to fantasize about adding new titles, so you can satisfy the underlying craving instead of the superficial expression of that sentiment.  I seriously doubt WWE put that much thought into the 24/7 title, since it reportedly originated as a spinoff of the “wild card rule,” which has only existed for two weeks.
It is challenging for a wrestling promotion to come up with ideas that live up to the fans’ expectations.  You can throw your hands up, say it’s impossible, and not bother trying.  But a smart promoter accepts the challenge and does the work.  WWE not only didn’t do the work, they barely bothered to design a new belt.

1, 4, 15, 16, 23, 31
1. all time favorite wrestler? least favorite wrestler ever?
WWE: Fav is probably Stone Cold, least is HHH
Overall: Fav is Volk Han, though that’s surprisingly contested. Least is.... fuck, dude, I don’t wanna be a total smark, but there are very few people who are so bad as HHH and put themselves in a position to actually make me pay attention to them instead of writing them off as “eh, I can ignore them.” It’s HHH. Even Tony Halme was entertainingly bad.
4. favorite tag team or stable past or present?
WWE: Always gonna have a huge soft spot for Londrick. Trying not to count ersatz tags here, which is too bad because of how many random pairings had great chemistry.
Overall: Furnas and Lafon, the Can-Am Express. Neither one of them were slouches but their whole blew past the sum of their parts.
15.  favorite finishing move?
WWE: Oof, that’s a tough one.
... honestly, it’s a goofy one, but the early form of the Big Show chokeslam, where he’d drop to one knee before impact. Of course, this also made the ring bottom out and made the bump twice as horrible to take, so it got retired...
non-WWE: Meiko Satomura’s “Scorpio Rising”
16. favorite title belt?
WWE: I’ve... honestly never liked any of WWE’s belts. Winged Eagle, I guess. Or the Million Dollar Championship.
FAKE EDIT: WWF Martial Arts Championship belt
Non-WWE: I’m pulling shenanigans to say that Pancrase was a shoot-wrestling league with pro-wrestling roots, and therefore I should be allowed to count the King of Pancrase.
But to be more fair, the ‘90s IWGP titles looked good and so does Dragon Gate’s “Dream Gate” belt.
23. dream tag team?
WWE: Mojo Rawley and Ken Shamrock. No, that’s not actually my dream WWE tag team, but I was thinking about it and it’d be really funny.
non-WWE: ah, fuck, I don’t know. Alexander Otsuka and Negro Navarro? Just being bald and grumpy and grapplefucking everyone?
31. favorite debut?
WWE: I wasn’t watching for most of the important debuts and haven’t been able to feel the impact of a lot of them live, so I’m going to violate my “count WWE and WCW separately” rule when it’s convenient (just like WWE does) and say either Fit Finlay or the initial nWo reveal. Lost my shit for Nakamura in NXT, though.
non-WWE: I’m blanking embarrassingly hard. Yoshihiko.
