My Mum asked me a question today while watching the Women’s World Cup Cricket Finals today. She wanted to know why I was taking comments the parental unit was making about the sport so personally. Sometimes parents think they know everything there is to know about their kid, but most times there’s this big gaping hole where they truly know nothing about their offspring. I get all personal with cricket because once upon a time that was a dream I was chasing like a mad woman until I got served an ultimatum. Apparently being served ultimatums is so much fun...not. I get even more personal about Women’s cricket, because of the lack of attention the sport gets from media and alike. This World Cup has been phenomenal because this might actually have been the first damn World Cup that got broadcasting rights and was actually accessible to viewers around the globe. Men’s cricket gets a fuckload of attention and it always used to kill me that the women got ignored or sidelined. This isn’t just 1 country or 2 we’re talking about, even all the major ‘developed’ nations like Australia, New Zealand & England, there hasn’t been a whole lot of emphasis put on them by their respective cricket boards, even though these 3 teams in particular have won major titles. Today or rather this entire series is a victory of sorts for ppl like me, who have always loved sports and grew up with stars in her eyes of representing her country in some athletic endeavour but without enough role models around. This series I hope is something that inspires many girls across the globe to pick up that bat or ball and give this beautiful game of a cricket a shot with the belief that one day they’ll be the next Mithali Raj or Anya Shrubsole or Claire Taylor or Lisa Sthalekar or Dane van Niekerk.
On that note, Congratulations Champions! Team England you did a phenomenal job or holding your nerve and fighting till the very end and making that World Cup yours! What a phenomenal performance by Anya Shrubsole, holy, now that’s a bowling performance to revisit for inspiration!
Congratulations Team India for fighting through the qualifying rounds, fighting back and making it to the Finals! You deserved to be there. I wish the World Cup was yours, but sometimes some things just don’t work out the way we hope for it to. But what a helluva game, you all put up quite a fight and should be very very proud of how far you’ve come and how much more you can achieve with the unit you have. Oh Captain, My Captain, Mithali Raj, it’s been an honour cheering this squad with you at the helm of things, managing it all with so much grace, strength & calm!
Congratulations Indian Women Cricket Team for beating Pakistan by 95 runs #IndvPak #PAKvIND #WWC17 #TeamIndia #BleedBlue #IndianWomenCricket #IndianWomenCricketTeam #WomensCricket #BCCI (at County Cricket Ground, Derby)
