Gov. Ron DeSantis axed funding on Thursday for Central Florida projects to stop flooding during the next hurricane, strengthen government cybersecurity defenses, celebrate Black history and tackle gun violence.
The governor’s nearly $511 million veto list included about $15.3 million in projects for Orange, Osceola, Lake and Seminole counties.
DeSantis defended his veto list as showing fiscal restraint in a $116.5 billion budget that makes “historic investments in education, public safety, infrastructure, and the environment.”
Democrats, though, blasted DeSantis’ veto decisions.
“Unfortunately, many good projects that would have relieved Florida’s taxpayers with everything from flood water mitigation to neighborhood resource centers were vetoed because the governor is disconnected from the needs of average Floridians,” said state Rep. Rita Harris, D-Orlando.
Republican state Sen. Joe Gruters also slammed DeSantis, saying in a statement that the governor “took it out on Sarasota County” because Gruters endorsed former President Trump in the 2024 GOP primary.
“It’s mean-spirited acts like this that are defining him here and across the country,” Gruters said, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
The veto list included money for projects to alleviate flooding in the Orlo Vista neighborhood in Orange County, the Midway community in Seminole County, Kissimmee and Osceola County, and Winter Park. The governor axed money to bolster Sanford’s cybersecurity defenses and fund a 1619 Fest and 5K race to celebrate Black history in Orlando.
State Sen. Linda Stewart, D-Orlando, said she was able to secure nearly $30 million in projects for Central Florida, including nearly $15 million for a nursing building at the University of Central Florida, $5 million for a building at Valencia College’s campus in Lake Nona and almost $800,000 for AdventHealth Type 1 diabetes research project.
Stewart said she appreciated those dollars but was disappointed more money wasn’t devoted to flooding. The state keeps a priority list of water projects, and she suspects the governor vetoed items that tried to move up on that list through legislative appropriations.
“We had more money than normal,” Stewart said. “Some of these projects could have easily been added to [address] what our individual cities and counties consider to be emergencies.”
Here is a list of Central Florida projects the governor vetoed.
Orange County Utilities – Orlo Vista Integrated Water Resources Project, flood mitigation for the Orlo Vista neighborhood: $2 million
Osceola County Buenaventura Lakes Drainage Improvements, project to remove 142 homes and businesses from repetitive flood risk: $1.8 million

This Journey (Part LXXXVII)
I'm getting used to it So far, things are slowly returning to my normal. I'm getting more used to where I live and thinking less about where I used to live. I still can't figure out where the damp, rancid smell is coming from in my apartment. I hate coming home to that stench every night. Still dealing with the occasional cockroach, but again, I'm getting used to it. I love my new desk. I have all kinds of room for my organized O.C.D. behavior. Everything in its place. I have the stereo hooked up. I usually listen to the local jazz station, WUCF. It's really the only thing good on the dial. I'm sleeping every night on an air mattress. It really isn't good for my lower back or my neck and shoulders, but it's all I have for now. I'm also getting used to life without a dishwasher. It's only me so, there aren't a lot of dishes to do. I have an issue with the power steering in my car. It's been an issue for about a month now. I think it's the actual EPS motor, located under the drivers side column. I don't have the extra cash to replace it. I can drive, but making turns, is a bitch. Again, I'm getting used to it. I'm learning more about the area around here. When Mark and I moved down here in 1988, we lived in an apartment about a mile away from here. Of course, that was thirty-two years ago. A few things have changed since then. I hear a lot of sirens all the time. This part of Orlando is in a fairly high crime area. Well, the only places around this city that aren't crime-ridden, are where the rich people live. Still, this is home and I love that I am back. I missed Florida so much. Mostly, it's quiet around here at night. As of 11pm tonight, Orange county is under a curfew until 5am. I have the front door open, and I can still hear the traffic on Curry Ford rd. It reminds me a lot of when a hurricane is headed this way. They call it "hunkering down". I went grocery shopping this afternoon, and got what I could as far as provisions. I'll be okay. I have the next three days off from work. I do have a scheduled five-day work week, starting next Tuesday. It should be a much easier week than what I've been doing lately. Work. Hmm, well, nobody really seems to know what to expect about what the airport plans to do about scaling back services, including how much they will or will not need us as security people. I'm guessing that we should be okay. Just cuts in hours. Understandably, the airport has really seen a drop in passengers this past week. Flights are going out, with only handfuls of people. It's a really strange feeling to think that Disney World and the attractions are all closed right now. All of my musician friends are out of work because they have no place to perform and make an income. They're telling us to stay home and stay away from people. Well, that's not an option for me. They're calling it "social distancing". Who makes up this shit? Nobody wants to shake hands because of this unrealistic fear of catching a decease. Every email I get feels the need to explain to me about washing my hands, like I'm a fucking five-year old kid. Gees! I get these notices on my door from the apartment management telling me that I can't come to the office because they don't want the staff to come in contact with residents. Everyone is so fearful of things that haven't even happened. I'm not fearful of anything other than not working and having a regular income.
I've been through my hell these past several years, especially last year. I'm not really fearful of anything now. I've gone without having money and food before. I've gone without working for days, sometimes weeks on end. With a lot of help from a lot of people, I did make it through. I've always been able to take care of myself. I think that might be why I'm not really worried about too many things. I think about what I went through a year ago, and it really keeps things in perspective for me. Nobody knows how long all of this is going to last. I keep reading and hearing about arbitrary numbers of days, weeks and months, before it's all over. Well, I remain dubious. This thing they call "self-quarantine", has been popularized by the media. I don't think most people even know how to spell quarantine, much less know the actually meaning of the word. If people are confined to their homes for any length of duration for too long, they're gonna get bored from binge-watching everything on Netflix, and will probably start to go stir crazy. There will also be a lot of babies born next winter. Perhaps, the next baby boomers? I have my pizza and my soda, my guitar and my music. I'm good, because I'm an introvert. Telling me I have to stay home and not be around a lot of people is nothing new for me. I'll manage.

2018 Hurricane Season Starts Today
Submitted for: John C. Hitt, President Subject: Hurricane Season
Florida's hurricane season lasts June 1 through Nov. 30. According to the National Hurricane Center, this season is expected to be one of the most active in recent years. UCF's hurricane policies and procedures are summarized below. Please familiarize yourself with them.
The National Hurricane Center provides information about hurricanes and other severe weather at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. During any threatening weather, UCF's Department of Security and Emergency Management monitors this site and sends official weather reports to campus leadership.
If a serious storm or hurricane threatens our region, the Governor and I have the authority to cancel classes or close campuses, and we do so in consultation with other area colleges, school districts, and government offices. If we cancel classes or close the university, UCF Communications will disseminate details via UCF Alert, social media, local media, and radio outlets, including WUCF 89.9 FM. We also will post this information on the UCF home page. A list of other media outlets and hurricane resources is available at http://emergency.ucf.edu/hurricanes.html.
When it is necessary - as it was during Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 - UCF enacts its Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, coordinated by William Merck, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Storm closings typically require UCF to open campus ride-out locations for students who live on campus. Jeff Morgan, Director of Security and Emergency Management, will activate the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate mission critical services such as security, utilities, dining services, and ride-out location support. Details of our Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and other emergency-related resources are posted on the Office of Emergency Management website, http://emergency.ucf.edu/plans.html.
While we hope for a hurricane-free season, we are wise to prepare. One way is to take advantage of the Disaster Preparedness 2018 Sales Tax Holiday. To learn more, visit http://floridarevenue.com/disasterprep/Pages/default.aspx.
I know I can count on you to do your part to keep the UCF community safe.
Take care.
