When the Night Comes Game Review
Tumblr media
Reviews can contain a few spoilers. Heavy, in-depth spoilers will have a warning. All opinions are my own and I have not been paid to do this review.
Dev Team - Lunaris Games Romance Routes - 6 individual and 2 polyamorous routes Rating - M17 Available On - Windows, Linux, Mac Price - $12.99
Overall Rating 5/5
Summary (retrieved from Lunaris Games website)
When The Night Comes is a queer, narrative-driven, supernatural visual novel originally released for free over a year from October 2018 - November 2019. When The Night Comes: The ReVamp is set to release in late Spring 2021 and will be a definitive version of the original game with a number of improvements, including voice acting and updated UI and artwork.
Play as a renowned Hunter; a creature slayer who has been called to the quiet, strange little town of Lunaris to assist the local Enforcers with an investigation into a series of unsettling and unexplained supernatural murders. Immerse yourself in the world of witches, vampires, demons and lycans as you slowly unravel the dark mystery that lies deep within the roots of the town.
The question is, are the creatures of the night the ones you should really be afraid of?
A story of finding a home and a family in the most unlikely of places, and a lesson in learning to bare your teeth at your maker.
Reaper Review
When the Night Comes was a game that I had no intention on loving. I was dipping my toes into playing dating sims/otomes on stream and I really liked the art style so I decided to play it and it was the best decision of my life.
The city of Lunaris is cursed by an unknown creature, leaving its citizens living in fear whenever night falls, especially every few days when the beast habitually hunts.
You play as a Hunter (fitting huh?), called in by the Lunaris Hunter team to help them put an end to the attacks. With customizable name and pronoun options, you’re slowly introduced to the main cast who are primarily all your romance options.
CAST (in order of appearance):
Ezra (VA - Adam Faison) He/Him : The local witch with kind eyes and a heart to match.
Tumblr media
Finn (VA - Gideon Emery) He/Him : Vampire clan leader whose comments made me blush on more than one occasion.
Tumblr media
Augustus (VA - Jonah Scott) They/Them : Major General of the Hunters and one of my all time favorite romances.
Tumblr media
Piper (VA - Ione Butler) She/Her : Fellow Hunter with the cutest laugh and loyal to her comrades to a fault.
Tumblr media
Alkar (VA - Jalen K. Cassell) He/Him : Resident mischievous Lycan who honestly shouldn’t have as bad of a reputation as he does.
Tumblr media
Omen (VA - Chris Patton) He/Him : Cinnamon Bun of a demon who is too good for this world.
Tumblr media
Throughout the game you meet side characters, work with the main cast, and investigate as much as you can about the creature that stalks the town. While it is an otome, the level of mystery in the game about the investigation and deaths is quite high and I found myself falling deeper into the story that when the big reveal came I was overcome with emotion. You find out just as much about the MC as you do about your companions and the mystery of the town.
One thing I appreciated was that there is no split between romance and story either, but rather the romances add to it, showing in their own ways how they grow to care about you and your wellbeing as the MC. The characters also have moments with each other, not just in the polyamory routes but in friendships and when you learn about their intricate backstories with one another. The banter between them all is on another level and I’m especially fond of the end of the game when all of the main cast come together in one big plan to find the beast and destroy it for good. Nothing annoys me more than being engrossed in a story only to be then thrown into lovey-dovey mode (and don’t get me wrong I love lovey-dovey mode).
Other things to note:
There is a festival scene which you can explore and spend time with your LI with a beautiful CG (a special full-screen static image) at the end of the moment that I just wanted to stay in forever.
Clear heart icon for dialogue options that are explicitly for romancing a character. So if you don’t want to romance anyone you can easily do it or on the other hand if you want to lock in a romance you don’t have to stress about what to say.
All of the best lines have voice acting however I’d say only about 75-80% of the game has voice acting. It’s a little annoying but only because I love the cast so much.
There are over 60 CGs and post-game mini stories (which I actually didn’t learn about the post-game stories until I was writing this…time to go play again!).
Of course bad endings are possible…but to be totally honest I’m too scared to play that route!
Lastly, my favorite part of the game would have to be the spicy scenes with your LI, if you so choose to pursue them. Without being visually explicit, you get to enjoy some sweet sweet spicy time with your favorite characters and this is where the voice acting is present a majority of the time if not completely. Now I love me some spice, but sometimes CGs can put me off from it. I prefer to imagine what’s going on rather than be shown AND if you’re trying to play sneakily, CGs are just a huge announcement to what you’re doing. The script is so well done that in my opinion CGs aren’t necessary.
This game has all of my love and I’d recommend it to anyone and everyone, so if you’re looking for a story with mystery and well developed characters I would say you’ve found it.
Purchase the game HERE.

There's not much people haven't said about Errant Kingdom on steam, but I've been following them since they first launched WTNC as it was my first visual novel, and I was greatly looking forward to EK's finale, so I might as well give a piece of my mind.
First of all, maybe I didn't catch on, but who attempted on the monarchs' lives? Who were the creepy cultists in the forest? The ending seems rushed. It's like they had a lot of loose ends and they did a poor job tying them. Lazy writing.
Until chapter 4/5 we didn't know what was going on, and then, in the last release, we've been presented with the problematic of the story and the poorly crafted ending with barely no epilogue.
I'm also annoyed that most of the romance with the MC and some LIs have been barely developed while Maja and Erik's seems more important than ours. I get this is a VN and not an otome game, but sometimes our MC didn't feel like the protagonist.
For instance, the Livia x Nomad route hasn't been half as developed as Maja and Erik's. They barely see each other and they fall in love? I get that given their roles in the story it's complicated, but if you're not sure you can deliver good work, why deliver it at all?
My impression is that they developed the story and the plot AND THEN tried to stuff the main character in there, offering us crumbs of romance after they started to officially date.
I'm not gonna talk about the communication of this team, the constant changes on the release of the chapters or the lack of organization and formality cause we all players are familiar with it, and the usual broken promises and delays are not easy to forget.
I checked the last review I gave them in itchio and it was 4 years ago. This doesn't feel like a game that has been worked on 4 years.
Although I have to say that not everything is bad, as the characters truly are what bear the entire burden of this project. The characterisation is splendid, and the reason why I've waited all these years for the game to release and actually play it is due to my emotional attachment to them.
With much more reason, I kinda feel played by this team cause I suspect that knowing of the love and affection that their clients have for these characters and the fact that many of us would play the game regardless of how long it took, they've relaxed.
I don't wish any ill to Lunaris Games, but I do hope they learn from this and improve the communication of their company as well as the way they develop their games.

OKAY i made it through every route for Living Dead Girl
considering WtNC is billed as a romance visual novel, you'd think there'd be more ... romance ... in this extra chapter. don't get me wrong, I know it's not a particularly long side story, but it felt like it was honestly shorter than it could have been. they say 'let's find the ghost,' and then they do. they say 'let's summon the ghost,' and then they do. they say 'let's get the ghost to pass on,' and then they do. there were basically zero stakes. the only complicating factor they run into in the entire thing is Finn being afraid of ghosts. I don't want senseless padding, but there were plenty of ways it could have been satisfactorily longer to give you time to actually bond with your spouse(s).
plus, like. the writers Made A Choice to add a side story to a romance game and then basically sideline half the cast. a third of the cast is there for, like, a quarter of the story. Ezra's there for less than half. Finn's around for about half-ish. only August and Piper are actually there from beginning to end.
and somehow Finn's romance still gets the most attention? like, you acknowledge him romantically a full scene before any of the others get romantically acknowledged, and he gets more scattered remarks/references.
but really, all the romance feels kinda tacked on until you get to the last scene that's, like, actually dedicated to you and your spouse(s). like i said, Finn gets the most attention. August gets less. Piper gets less. Ezra, Alkar, and Omen may as well not be there until their dedicated scenes at the end. if you romance Omen and Alkar together, it's like 90% just Alkar's route. if you romance Finn and Ezra together, it's like 80% just Finn's route.
(ironically, Ezra actually gets MORE attention in the poly route, since in that one you acknowledge both of them a scene earlier than any of the others. though that opens up further weirdness, since you acknowledge him in the context of him finally running out of patience, but he does that regardless of who you romance, but that doesn't get factored into his solo route. plus the fact that you only explicitly say 'I am married to Finn' when asked and then just mention Ezra as 'our other husband' kinda negates any extra attention.)
and once you get to the last scene, it's basically the same conversation regardless of whose route you're on. obviously, it makes sense that your character is hung up on the same thing regardless, but five of the six spouses comfort you in basically the same way, with just mildly different phrasing. only Piper has a bit of a different perspective.
was it cute? yes. did I enjoy reading it? yes. did I like the new character? yes. is the new art nice? yes, very. but it seems like they sacrificed the romances--the main draw of the visual novel--on the altar of getting from point A to B as fast as fucking possible.
(also Alkar still has the best domesticity)

Now I'm done being relieved I was perfectly justified in my diappointment, I still love WTNC and the revamp with voice-acting, (although I personally think it's not necessary in a visual novel game of that nature), was pretty good. Yes, there are some things they could have done better or differently, and you can definitely tell they write for one route specifically and use it as a base for the others, (Arcana has this very same issue), but it seemed to come together a lot better at the end. Plus, I adore the DLC.

so i like to play visual novels and interactive fiction (thanks, choice of games, for making that an inescapable genre for me back in 2011).
one of the games i've been playing is errant kingdom, since... basically since it first came out? i started playing lunaris games just before wtnc finished. i haven't been looking at anything about them on tumblr or discord or whatever, only the stuff on itch, so sorry if i've missed something vitally important. also it's wild to think it's apparently four years old, i know it's an indie game but it certainly doesn't feel like it's been developed for that long
also, recently i've only been playing the nomad route - i got up to chapter 4 on the knight and ambassador ages ago, but i haven't bothered to replay them since the engine got changed. so maybe this is just exclusive to nomad.
anyway, the ending is... well, pretty disappointing. i haven't actually finished it, because i couldn't get past how absurdly dumb it was for the villains to tell us that only erik could wield the sword. like, no one could use the sword at that point. when your enemies ask you why you're trying to kill a guy (because he's the only one who can wield the magic sword), you don't tell them that.
and when i say i couldn't get past it, i kept playing for like another minute before going. oh. oh no. it's not improving from here, is it? and then i stopped playing, because it was just so ridiculous that basically everyone would've failed to stop them if not for the villains outright telling us who to give the sword to.

It’s official, I’m in hell. Have any of you heard of the visual novel, When The Night Comes? I recently got it as an early Christmas present from a friend, and I am beyond hooked. I am definitely making a WTNC verse, and if anyone isn’t familiar with this game, I HIGHLY recommend trying it out! It’s $12.99 on Steam, and I’ve been enjoying it so much. I’m craving some interactions with my OC, Deirdre and Finnegan Kazimir. XD I can’t help it; I love Vampires way too much, lol.

The poly routes in When the Night Comes are precious. The game itself isn't anything extraordinary but these two saucy and sweet flavoured routes are a beautiful escape from reality. A very drooling-inducing one, too!

Finn and Ezra route spoilers
Tumblr media
Fuuuuuuuck, I know I can just go back and do the other option but it was soooooo hard to choose.
For context since there's like no one in this fandom, there's a vampire and a witch who you can enter a polyamorous relationship with and Vampy boy gets hungry and Witches boy gets turned on from being bitten.

When the Nights Comes Review
Tumblr media
[ID: Banner image showing the six main characters and romance options for the visual novel "When the night comes" lined up.] Alongside "The Arcana" (read that review here) Lunaris Game's catalogue of visual novels was recommended to me.
Pros:
✔ You can choose your own pronouns. She/Her, He/Him, They/Them. ✔ LGBT romances and Poly Relationships if you want. ✔ Lovely Story and world. ✔ Lovely artwork. ✔ Lovely soundtrack. ✔ Bonus side stories post main story. ✔ There is an option for a "bad ending". ✔ When you buy the story, you get the entire story + Additional content. ✔ Warnings (in-game) for potential triggers and how to avoid them! ✔ If you don't want to read sex scenes you can skip them.
Cons:
❌ The artwork can be inconsistent in terms of style. ❌ One of the ploy ships does not work for me personally. ❌ Can feel a little short. ❌ For the most part, there are no "choices" beyond romance or not to romance. ❌ The world can feel small. But it works for the story. ❌ Partially voice acted. Personally, I'm not a fan of only certain lines being voice acted, but damn if this cast doesn't have lovely voices. So I sort of let it slide. If you are not a fan, you can just turn the voice volume down, essentially muting it.
So I enjoyed this one. Because I can sit down and play through a character route from beginning to end at my own pace! There are however a view things I want to nit-pick, because I can.
First piper wonderful character, complete badass and I love her voice actresses giggle snort. Perfect. Her design, however....I think the vitiligo should have a deeper pinker contrast. Another nit-pick that I have is the Alkar/Omen/Hunter(You) poly ship. To me this poly ship is lesser than the Ezra/Finn/Hunter(You) ship. Because (to me) it feels like you (the hunter) are getting in between Alkar/Omen at times, whereas Ezra/Finn poly ship feels more like you are actually included and wanted in this relationship.
Plus I dislike the designs of Alkar and Omen. Demons should not have dainty bottom row fangs, if you want bottom row fangs commit and make them orc like. Also while on the subject of Omen, his noodle tail! I hate noodle tails. Noodle tails are stupid. Alkar the four-eared half were-wolf (don't ask me how that works because???? that'll just set me off ranting) has a nice tail. His is a fluffy tail. A good nice fluffy tail! Ezra is amazing and all this shit would collapse without him. Finn is a vampire with a mechanical arm, voiced by Gideon Emery and is just so perfect. Them together amazing, them together with the hunter amazing. All-around amazing. Ezra's relationship is interested in that he can be the sub or dom, you are often given the choice to choose whether you wish to submit or take control or neither. This also applies to the Ezra/Finn/Hunter ship somewhat as well. Piper I have commented on but it bares repeating, I love her. I would kill for this woman, she could crush my ribs and I would be grateful to her for it! She is wonderful, just ugh! I love her so much. Then there is August. I woud die for them. I love them. The moment they appeared in their fine clothes and that fur coat I knew this was the person for me. This was my character who I would cherish. They are perfect, from their voice actor to their very character (they need more sleep dam it) to the fact they unashamedly read smut! I won't get into spoilers because you should (if you can) play this and find out for yourself, but oh I love all of these characters.
Yes, I recommend this visual novel. You can find more information here. You can download a free demo and see what you think.

Okay I know literally no one cares, but I’m thinking about the cinematic parallels (if you can call it that) of When The Night Comes.
The first line of the game is “I arrive in Lunaris at dusk” THEN THE LINE BEFORE THE BIG CLIMAX FIGHT THING IS “It’s dusk in Lunaris”
SOBS i dont know if that was intentional or not but i hope it was.
