Rewind Review, Vol 33
Futuristic – As Seen On The Internet Record Label: Self-released Release Date: August 26 2016
Throughout the last couple of years, I've written a lot of "re-reviews," which are just albums that I've already heard and reviewed, but it was a couple or more ago. Feelings can just a lot in a year, and even just in a month or two, so I decided to try something a little different with albums that I've covered before (whether it was a year ago, or just a few months ago). Not a re-review, per se, but a Rewind Review, in which I'll be briefly talking about the album and whether my feelings are still the same. I didn’t plan on doing this a lot, but I wanted to do this whenever I felt like revisiting an album from the year that I really loved or hated, and see how I feel about it now. Opinions and tastes can really change, even if it's in a brief time, so I thought it would be interesting to see if my feelings still ring true for albums that I've covered in the last couple of months, let alone within the last couple of years.
It’s been a minute since I’ve talked about rapper Futuristic, but I recently watched an interview that he did, and I’ve been inspired to listen to him again, mainly his newest single, “Wave,” and his last album. I really enjoyed As Seen On The Internet when it was released last year, and part of that was because of its creativity. The album was a very loose concept about the Internet, and each song was related to something about it. There were songs about haters typing away online, stalking a girl’s Instagram, or just getting viral online through a video or song, and it was interesting. It reminded me a bit of Because The Internet by Childish Gambino, but only because they were both loosely about the same thing – how the Internet affects people today. Futuristic did that concept better, thanks to having a more flowing concept, whereas the concept of Because The Internet was based on a screenplay that Donald Glover wrote, and it didn’t have much to do with the Internet, minus some jokes and vague themes here and there. Either way, though, I really like Futuristic’s last album, especially being into his last two albums, 2015’s The Rise and 2015’s Coast 2 Coast (featuring Devvon Terrell). I wanted to revisit it, though, just to see how it held up. I enjoyed the interview that I watched, and I’ve been into his new single, so how does As Seen On The Internet hold up?
You know, it holds up really well, because I really like it. I still enjoy it a lot today, even though I can’t say I’ve grown to like it more than I did. I enjoy this LP about the same as I did when I first listened to it, but I enjoy it, nonetheless. It’s a lot of fun to listen to. Futuristic is one of my favorite rappers, if not my favorite, because of how awesome his bars are, his lyrics are very clever / poignant, and his beats are really, really catchy, bouncy, and great-sounding. This LP isn’t anything too unique, deep, or introspective, but there are moments where it can get a bit deeper. Some tracks deal with some interesting ideas, all related to social media. One of my favorites is “Scrollin’,” featuring every white kid’s favorite rapper, Hopsin. I don’t like Hopsin at all, but his verse was tight on this song. The song is all about how haters will type away online, but when it comes to seeing these people face-to-face, they won’t do anything. The whole point is for these people to just keep “scrollin’” when they see people or things they don’t like, at least something as trivial as a song or artist. Another track I enjoy a lot is “No Service,” in which Futuristic talks about how people would react if they were faced with being at a party / event with no WiFi. On one hand, I like this track, because he does bring up some good points about peoples’ dependence on social media (using it to brag about how much fun they’re having, versus having fun in the moment), but I hate the idea that social media is evil, and people are becoming dumber because of it.
You do have some more fun, energetic, and tracks that I’d call “bangers,” such as “Do It,” which is awesome. That’s easily one of my favorite tracks off the album, if not my favorite, but it’s more or less a generic “bragging” track that’s not necessarily about how much stuff Futuristic has, but how he got it. It’s all about how he’s doing everything he needs to make sure he has some form of success. That’s the kind of bragging I can get behind, especially when Futuristic is filled with tons of punchlines and jokes within in his lyrics. The only other song I’ll mention is more of an R&B cut, but it’s another track featuring Devvon Terrell, entitled “Nudes.” There’s not much to this song, it’s just about Futuristic and Terrell trying to get nudes from a girl, as well as trying to woo her, but I like how the idea of nudes isn’t being shamed (because you can do whatever you want with your body, permitting it’s consentual and you’re of age). That’s another one of my favorite tracks, though, because I always enjoy his more R&B cuts. Anyway, if you’re new to Futuristic, and you want to listen to his work, this is a good album to listen to. You’d get the gist of what Futuristic is about, but I would definitely listen to 2015’s The Rise, too, that’s a nice album.
