and another thing thats fun is that in addition to brisbane/auckland/hong kong being 250s and high ranking players don’t usually play them, since the united cup is on and the high ranking players loveee a national event these draws are entirely people who aren’t from tennis powerhouse nations or are too flop to be on their countries national team. which makes things even more fun

i think the thing that’s silliest about the mandatory 0 rule is how it replaces your worst result- so since iga didn’t lose r1 in any tournaments she did play, she’s losing more points than aryna who lost her first match in dubai. obviously it’s not “unfair” because the players know, it is what it is, but i just think that if the rule rewards or incentivizes (for lack of a better word) tanking… it’s not a good rule. i hope next year they make the requirement 3 or 4 500s because 6 is just absurd for top players who go deep in 1000s and slams lol
I don't think it incentivizes tanking though because the ideal is to not drop any of the 1000 tournaments...if a player doesn't get any mandatory zeros then they hypothetically get to include all of their 1000 results, where it's a lot easier to earn more points than in the 500s. Plus, if Iga had tanked in Miami for example and only gotten 10 points, she still would have lost those 10 points, and ended up at the same point total she's at now – it only seems like she's lost more than Aryna because they've only just now decided to apply the mandatory zeros.
I also think we're not taking into account the fact that these calculations are all made in hindsight. No high-level player is going to roll up to a 1000 tournament and decide to tank for the purpose of having a smaller point total to drop, because a) they're probably not aiming to have any mandatory zeros anyway, and b) they'd much rather replace their current lowest point gain. Aryna was only able to drop Dubai because she performed better in later 1000s. If she had lost first round of Wuhan, for example, she would have had to count one of those +10 values. So, I understand the thought process but I don't think that's actually an issue in practice. The players who actually need to worry about mandatory zeros are never going to settle for early exits anyway.
But I 100% agree, 6 500s is too many, especially considering the 1000s are all mandatory now. Even just the placement of the 500s in the schedule makes it difficult to fit 6 in – players are being forced to commit themselves to long stretches of back to back to back to back tournaments. I think it's also even harder for Iga because it was an Olympic year, so no chance of making DC (and ended up missing Canada as well).
But on a much more serious level I think it's just the scheduling issues, again and again and again. The season is too long, 10 mandatory 1000s and 6 mandatory 500s is ridiculous, the way that the mandatory zeros were applied was weird.
#idk. does this make sense?#like i get you‚ it feels unfair#but those points were technically not even supposed to be counted anyway#honestly i don't see the point in having any mandatory 500s. like keep the 1000s mandatory sure. and keep the rank total at 18 tournaments#players are going to go to 500s anyway and if they don't then it's their loss? they wont improve their ranking?#like the player is the one suffering most from not playing 500s because they have less tournaments to add to their point total#i understand they want to make sure that there are actually good draws with top players for 500 tournaments#but realistically youre going to get better draws if you reduce the number of them total???#because again im assuming most top players would rather play 500s rather than 250s since it contributes so much more to point total#but when you have like 50 million 500 events throughout the year then players are spreading out over all of those draws#i mean what is even the point of having two 500s in one week like with eastbourne and bag homburg? you're guaranteeing to split the field#if you pick and choose which tournaments get that status you increase the chance of that tournament actually drawing players in#take stuttgart for example. and charleston too.#you dont have to beg top players to show up to 500s. they will come if the tournament is seen as valuable#and it's hard for a tournament to seem valuable when it's one of like 50 million others AND back to back to back#idk this is maybe a separate conversation but i just think the wta got it all wrong with the 500s

it's so cool to see tennis on here, let alone someone who likes both seventeen and tennis!!!! I don't interact with much outside of watching games anymore but am still very much familiar with the players you post about and reblog and it's just so refreshing to see
Do you go watch in person a lot??
ahhhhhh i have been a tennis fan for a long time now but i only started to post more on it on tumblr again since like a year ago or so, so i am glad there’s someone else out there who is down with it too 🤩 i also mostly watch games but sometimes i do live post my watching hehe especially when i suffer bc of the atp tour lol you gotta find your place to vent 🙂‍↕️
would love to watch games in person but sadly it hasn’t happened yet. there’s only one in this country overall, sometimes two, and it never really fit into my schedule despite living not too far from one 🥲

Monterrey (500) R1: Lina Glushko [LL] def. Kateryna Volodko 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 WTA TV
Even though there was a slip in Lina's range in the second set as Kateryna started redirecting from her backhand side, her aggression kept the former rolling, pulling a slight depth before the latter went off-balance by the end of the third set. While there were some momentum questions midway when Kateryna had a break point, Lina's service games salvaged some troubles along the way. From here, Lina created 5 break points compared to Kateryna's 4, converting 40% of them throughout the match.
Furthermore, the service games also played a part in Lina's outstanding performance despite the second-set dip, which might have been caused by her second serves. Scoring a whopping 15 aces than Kateryna's 1, Lina might have landed only 58% of her first serves, but had an exceptional first serve winning percentage with 79%, which helped her stay clutch on serve. On the other hand, the risks might have applied to her follow-ups, which made her second serve percentage fall 11% behind Kateryna even if the latter double-faulted 5 times.
After marking her first (main Tour) WTA-level victory, Lina will face the winner between ninth seed Magdalena Frech or Nadia Podoroska, whose match will be played later tonight (local time). Should the former win, this should be a rematch of their ITF W100 Les Franqueses del Valles from several months ago, where M. Frech won straightforwardly as Lina came back from 2 different comeback wins (and the qualification rounds). Should this match be between their best versions, this could test their offensives and depth to some extent, where their final shots and pace could determine some other parts of the flow. Should be another fun watch for the night!

24 moments from the 2024 season:
Rafa vs. Domi - Brisbane, painful but I was so excited watching it! Rafa was back on my TV!

Sincaraz IW  - not just the match, it was my favorite sincaraz moment of 2024
Jannik x Holger Montecarlo drama!
Casper getting his first 500 title
“Who are they?? Illuminati??” - Meddy never disappoints! There were a lot of gems as usual but this was my favorite
Aryna vs. Iga Madrid - what a match!!!!
Naomiga RG - like Domi vs. Rafa, painful but worth it
Jannik becoming world #1
Carlitos winning RG - and nearly leading me to a heart attack while doing it
Carlitos defending Wimbledon
Jasmine making back to back GS finals (hope she wins next year!)
Nuno winning his first title! - I mean, he had to beat Rafa, but I was so happy for him anyway and he was a sweetheart
Arthur beating Zverev in Hamburg and winning the title - nerve-wracking watch with @schumi-nadal
Rafa and Serena holding the Olympic flame - I genuinely shed some tears
Novak winning Gold Medal - I shed some tears too
LC being tennis eurovision once again!
Sincaraz in Beijing - great match, great post match stuff (plane ride, come on!!)
The girls dresses at WTA finals - beautiful queens!
Igaryna selfie videos/tiktok whatever it was!

Taylor becoming Zverev’s personal nightmare/butcher
Novandy announcing whatever they think they’re announcing
The season was also marked by retirement(s) but I didn't want to include those.

the many woes of WTA Berlin 2024
yep, we’ve got yet another cursed tournament
To start us off, the World #1 Iga Świątek has withdrawn entirely, leaving Coco Gauff, who just became #2 a week ago, as the top seed. As a result, Aryna Sabalenka (seeded second) and Elena Rybakina (seeded third) known for their explosive matches, ended up on the same side of the draw. Jessica Pegula, coming back from injury, is seeded fourth.
Right from the start, it doesn’t just rain. It pours, and this tournament doesn’t have a roof. Matches get delayed and rescheduled like crazy throughout the entire tournament - we’ll get to the worst of it as they come.
In the first round, qualifier and known doubles player Katerina Siniakova takes out Navarro 6-4 6-3. Victoria Azarenka beats the ever-erratic seventh seed Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-2 in a remarkably uncompetitive match. Another qualifier, Veronika Kudermetova, beats compatriot Samsonova 3-6 6-4 6-4. Kudermetova is one of those players that randomly shows up every few months and decides she’s gonna play at a top 20 level. Speaking of players who can sometimes play like the best in the world and sometimes forget how to play tennis, Kostyuk loses to one of the worst grass players on tour, Daria Kasatkina, with a scoreline 4-6 7-6 6-3.
All the top four seeds survive the second round, but fifth and sixth aren’t so lucky. Anna Kalinskaya receives her first walkover of the tournament after fifth seed Marketa Vondrousova is injured at 5-5 in the first set. Siniakova continues her run by beating sixth seed Zheng 6-4 6-4. Throughout all this it rains, a lot.
The quarterfinals is where things start to get truly crazy. First Rybakina is forced to retire against Azarenka at only 3-1. Following this, Azarenka and her son play mixed doubles with some fans on the court. Jess and Siniakova are in a tight third set when the rain pushes them to the next day along with the other two quarterfinals. Jess is able to finish it up, winning 7-6 3-6 6-3. In the next quarterfinal, Coco wins a close tiebreak against eight seed Ons Jabeur, but Jabeur retires immediately after due to illness. Finally, Anna receives another walkover, this time from Sabalenka, who retired due to a shoulder injury at 5-1. Three out of four quarterfinals ended in a retirement.
The very same day, Anna beats Azarenka with a bizarre scoreline of 6-1 6-7 6-1 to make the final. Interestingly enough, her boyfriend makes a German 500 final at roughly the same time. The second semifinal is a battle of doubles partners between Coco and Jess. Jess wins the first set, but Coco is serving at 5-3 in the second. In true Coco Gauff fashion, she gets broken and the second set goes to a tiebreak. Jess is up 3-1 in the tiebreak when it starts to rain, meaning the end of the match has to be pushed to the next day, where the winner will face Anna just a few hours later.
The next day, Jess finishes off the tiebreak, winning it 7-2, and then goes to play the final. The first set goes to a tiebreak, which Anna wins in a shocking 7-0. Jess breaks in the second set to win it 6-4. In the third set, Anna is up 4-1 with momentum towards a win, but gets broken. Even still, at 5-4 she has four match points, all of which Jess manages to save. Then, at 5-5 Anna goes down 0-40 and ends up saving four break points to hold. She finds herself with another match point in the next game, but Jess saves it in an insane rally to send it to a tiebreak. Unlike the first set tiebreak, Jess wins this one handily with a scoreline of 7-3.
When they meet at the net, Jess literally says sorry.

HELLO HOW DO I GET INTO TENNIS HOW DOES IT WORK
context: i read your landoscar tennis fic and thought “oh. OH. This is GREAT. now i wanna get into tennis but oh fuck, new interest scary.” and now im conflicted because i have been scrolling through your blog and this seems like a very fun and sexy sport to be a fan of but also How the Fuck does it work? like what’s the main objective, what’s everyone trying to do? im already a huge f1 fan, and i know the point there is to win grand prix’s and eventually a world championship, but is there a tennis equivalent to that? is it to win Wimbledon? or the Australian Open? Or the US open? WHAT EVEN IS A OPEN. I AM LOSING MY MIND. and like how do you play tennis? how to be a good tennis player, what are the defining characteristics? what the fuck is a drop shot and why is a man named jannik not allowed to do them or else you will get a heart attack? speaking of which, jannik sinner has floofy hair and baby girl vibes and a friendship with slightly homosexual undertones with Carlos altracatz and i WANT to know more about them but like AAAA and i also feel like tennis is harder to understand because it’s not as easily categorised as f1? idk if it makes sense but there’s only 20 f1 drivers and one championship and one aim, but i feel like tennis is SO much wider and there are so many levels and it’s HARD TO UNDERSTAND…… so if someone could give me a basic breakdown of how tennis works and how to be a tennis fan? that would be great? or like… point me in the direction of something that will explain it? because i can feel a new obsession coming on but also AAA CONFUSION?.?. PLEASE I AM BEGGING SOMEONE HELP, please explain the basics. i am so sorry about the rant. have a good day <3. i am in tears of confusion
ANON my GOD I think this is the best ask I've ever received ... you have SO many questions and I have SO many thoughts, thank you so much for trusting me with this I will do my best & then I'll link some tennis blogs
"What's everyone trying to do"
LMAOOO okay this is actually such a fun question and multi-layered
— so if you asked a tennis player I think most of them would give a small-ish goal (relative to their experience. lol)  like some of them are sooOOOoo boring and would just say "I take it one match at a time" blah blah, some players (ons jabeur my beloved) are transparent about wanting to win big tournaments, some players are close enough to being number one in the world that they are allowed to say "I want to be number one in the world" lmao. Being #1 is determined by ranking points btw!! which you earn by winning matches at tournaments on the ATP (men's) or WTA (women's) tour. Each round at a tournament earns you more points, i.e. if you get to the semi-finals you earn more ranking points than if you only get to the round of 16.
— wow that was too many words for a bullet point but basically: if you're good enough, you want to be #1 in the world by ranking points. There are also other goals like: win all majors in a single year (a "grand slam"), win the MOST majors compared to anyone else (djokovic holds the record currently at 24), etc.
"okay so what is a major??"
(sorry slightly rephrasing your q: what is an open — we'll get there — also sorry it's getting jargony)
— ATP/WTA tournaments happen at different levels, which affects how many ranking points are earned and how much money you get in prizes. At an ATP 250 you win 250 points for winning the final, at an ATP 500 you get 500, etc. At the Grand Slam tournaments you get 2000 (!!) points and, like, SOOooooo much money for winning.
— There are four Grand Slam tournaments: in chronological order you've got the Australian Open (January), the French Open (also called Roland-Garros, it happens in May/June), Wimbledon (July), and the US Open (August/September).
— "Open" means that the competition is open to professionals and amateurs, so a lot of the tournaments are called [name of city] open or [name of sponsor] open
AO and USO happen on hard court
Wimbledon is on grass
French is on clay
okay that's all boring facts but here's where it gets fun (2 meeee)
Tumblr media
^ Wimbledon is ✨ SACRED✨. it has a bunch of strange/archaic rules that are taken very seriously (players have to wear white, silence during play is ENFORCED in capital letters, etc) and its history is vaunted & special ! as a result there is a lot of weight to winning wimbledon for a lot of people, like wimbledon is special even amongst tennis players. it's the only grass major and the grass season is SHORT so you have to find your feet real damn fast. of course there's some backlash to the weird mystical atmosphere of wimbledon which is also fun to watch .. kyrgios being an smarmy asshole about it and (maybe?) getting fined for example .. but honestly it's rightfully criticised for being a stick in the proverbial mud,,  speaking of mud ...
Tumblr media
^ the French Open is ✨BEAUTIFUL✨. it's a clay tournament, which means play is slower, and just .. the look of clay ... idk it punches me in the chest tbh not sure why. players slide around and get dirty and it's all so fun & lovely & GORG . clay season is my personal favorite season
Tumblr media
^ the US Open is ✨FUN✨. it's in New York City (ayyyyyyooo) and the crowd is ROWDY in a way that is truly unparalleled, you can't beat the atmosphere for party-esque but some players (a lot of players) haaaaaAAaate it. Some people love it tho, Serena always loved it, Coco fricken adored it (helps if you're american LOL)
Tumblr media
^ the Australian Open is .. uh, hm. Happy? tbh I miss most of the AO every year because it's in an exactly opposite time zone from me. it's like a warm-up slam. LOL SORRY. somebody can correct me if they feel strongly ... >.>  it's also called the happy slam, it has a huge turn out every year so it must be fun!! play is very quick. jannik won this year :)))))))))))
"What's a drop shot"
— SooooOOO now we're getting into actual play jargon ... basically different shots have different names, forehand is when you hit a ball with the palm of your dominant hand facing forward, backhand is when your palm faces your chest ... I won't describe every shot because probs a video is more helpful for that? but:
— a drop shot is a ball hit so that it drops very close to the net on your opponent's side. basically if your opponent is waaaaay at the back of the court (maybe you've been rallying for a while and they got comfy) you can try and hit a ball short so that they can't get to it before it bounces twice. it's risky!!! if you attempt a drop shot you're probably pretty close to the net: if your opponent DOES get to it and hit it back, they're probably going to hit it behind you, and you won't have time to run behind it to get a racket under it.
"what are the defining characteristics of a good player"
— WOOF. okay. speed, for sure. but fast-twitch speed: can you get to the ball quickly? can you react to where it lands on the court and how it pops up? once you've hit it, can you get back into position before it comes back to you two seconds later? if you're up close to the net because you attempted a drop shot and your opponent gets to the ball & hits it behind you, can you back up real fast and attempt a "tweener" (when you hit a ball backwards through your legs) ? etc. You have to do a lot of movement around a small-ish space quickly, tennis players do a lot of short, high-intensity practices to prepare — athleticism!! tennis is an all-body sport:  do you have the lungs to keep running for a three hour match? do you have the leg strength to keep you jumping around that long? do you have the shoulders for a strong serve, arms for big ground-strokes?  (tennis players are fucking HOT lmao)
Tumblr media
— creativity ! you can have the best arms ever and still lose because you play the same shot over and over and over and over and over and your opponent learns this and hits something that throws you off your rhythm. The best players (and most interesting to watch) can play far from or close to the net, are trying new things, are HAVING FUN (carlos alcaraz e.g.)
Tumblr media
— elegance ... idk some players just float .. they do all of the above but make it look so EASY
"there are only 20 drivers in f1 and there are so many tennis players HOW"
— no, valid. basically this tumblr post about how every so often there's a new tennis guy and I'm like "wait, who?" . I think everyone on tennisblr picks their faves and follows them closely, and then depending on your level of interest you pick up other faves along the way??  I got into tennis in the federer/nadal era so I'm a federer girl, in the WTA I'm smitten for serena (who isn't) with almost equal soft spots for Naomi Osaka and Ash Barty. Nowadays I follow jannik sinner like i'm a dog who's found a weird lanky carrot-flavored bone. i follow alcaraz because he's beautiful to watch, truuuuuly beautiful. i follow daniil medvedev because he's inSANE and a cunt but fun about it. I follow iga sviatek (my love) and coco gauff (my love [american]) because they're incredible and fun, ostapenko because she's ridic, muchova because she hits so pretty, daria because I want her to marry me <3
Tumblr media
^ one more obligatory jannik picture lol
— just on the subject of relating things to f1: the one thing that I really miss in tennis now that I've been following f1 for a bit is how the idea of a "team" just doesn't really exist. tennis players play doubles sometimes but even on a doubles team you're really playing for yourself, you don't get team support, that's not really a thing?? if you're a really good singles player you prioritize singles play, and often you play across the net from your doubles partner and obviously in that case you want them to lose??? like to a greater extent than f1 drivers want their teammate to lose, because tennis is truly zero-sum in a way that f1 isn't, quite.  this makes all tennis players feel kinda lonely and anti-social LOL and uhhh sometimes they actually are I think, like a lot of tennis players are super introverted and strange. i'm sure you see this in other sports this is just me comparing my two obsessions
woof ok idk if you're still reading but if you are!! some tennis blogs i can recommend off the absolute top of my head are: @sincaraz @tennis-shenanigans @mythicalpoolnoodle @scarletwitch1918 @fritzes @zhengqinwen @mayor-amor @vilebodiess @advantage-sinner (sorry this will catapult you into sinner tumblr) and they can probs rec more !! they can also correct me if i got something wrong!
as for basics, I think just watching some matches to start ! with commentary on so you know what's happening, also if you ever feel like sliding into my DMs ... they are SO open (heh) for new tennis fans :))

📸 🎥 WTA TV
Kateryna somehow had fair chances in the third set, where she scored the first deuce thanks to an approach from quite an angle from his backhand side, but even if Lina survived a break point made from her double fault into an ace, she held her serves to 2-1 afterward. This massive hold became crucial as Lina's deep returns went after Kateryna's +1 errors, including a double fault that created the former's break point. This caused Lina to break 3-1, and consolidated her lead to 4-1 afterward.
After Kateryna held her serves to 4-2, she almost broke back as she questioned Lina's ability to hold the momentum through a brilliant point construction to her forehand side. The former even had a break point due to Lina's shaky forehand, which was saved with an ace before scoring another massive hold to 5-2. It took two more games before she had an opportunity to serve for the match, which she successfully did despite overcoming tightness to take the third set 6-3, thus securing her spot in the second round, as well as winning her first WTA-level match.
