Random things I noticed while playing What Remains Of Edith Finch
There was a poster of the cannery that Lewis worked at on the boat.
2. Edith Jr wears what appears to be an engagement on a necklace. Whether this is her ring or her mothers is not mentioned.
3. At the start of the game, Milton's missing posters are EVERYWHERE. There is even a giant pile of them in a nearby lake.
4. The dragon slide that crushed and killed Sven is still outside.
5. As you walk toward the house, the music gets louder.
6. The swing that Calvin flew off decades ago is still looped around the branch.
7. There was a spare peep hole in the garage that didn't have any names or dates on it.
8. At multiple points throughout the game you can hear a train in the background, despite the fact that the train tracks are clearly destroyed.
9. There are multiple pots throughout the Finch house that looks like they have eyes.
10. One of the books the Finches possessed was 'King in Yellow', a book known for making anyone who read it insane.
11. The house sounds alive, or like there are people constantly moving around it.
12. Walters bedroom is painted with both ocean and train designs. One of the paintings is the old house that Odin tried to bring to America.
13. There are drag marks on the ground of Walters bedroom (most likely made when his drawers were taken out of his room.)
14. The entrance to the tunnels is hidden by a book called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a classic sci-fi story about a sea monster.
15. Molly's room is filled entirely with animal books.
16. There is a jelly fish on Molly's bed (possible connection to the monster??).
17. Molly has a chalkboard in her bedroom where she is a princess in an underwater castle and Sven is about to get attacked by a sea monster (slightly resembling the dragon slide).
18. As shark!Molly starts falling down the cliff, she passes a road where headlights are briefly scene.
19. When the monster gets back to Molly's room, the window that cat!Molly jumped through is still open.
20. There are still Christmas decorations in Molly's room.
21. The curse is 500 years old. That is a lot of dead people.
22. In Odin's viewfinder, it states "His [Odin's] daughter, Edie, is already dreaming of new Finch house" showing that even though her own father died not even a week ago, Edie has already moved on.
23. The house is filled head to toe with books about death, including two that Odin wrote.
24. Sven's shrine does not have a log painting like the rest of the family. His portrait is painted on a simple canvas.
25. Edie has a number of strange tapes in her room including one titled "conspiracy now".
26. The toys from Gregory's final bath are still in the bathroom.
27. There is an old bottle of alcohol in the bathroom bin.
28. A lot of Sam's photos are based on Calvin (a swing, astronauts).
29. All of Milton's drawings are based on the death. (Molly = cat, Barbara = pumpkin)
30. There are cigarettes and gin on Sam's side of the room he shared with Calvin.
31. Calvin already had bruises, Band-Aids and a cast on his leg when he died.
32. Sam blames himself for challenging Calvin.
33. In the story, Calvin doesn't fall. He keeps flying.
34. Barbara's birthday cake is still in her room.
35. Barbara is holding crutches in her portrait.
36. There are totem-esc styles statues of both Calvin and Molly
37. Barbara's outfit is over the railing.
This is the same way the Hook-Man falls
38. "Performance of her life" can also mean that it is the performance she is known for.
39. There are spare portrait logs in the basement.
40. There is a fake window in the basement.
41. Edie's grave is finished despite her dying and then nobody else going to the house.
42. There is no grave for Milton.
43. Lewis' grave has a crown on it.
44. There are times wear it seems like you can hear sobbing (this one may just be me).
45. There is a box of Kay's old stuff in Sam's bedroom.
46. Odin has a park named after him.
47. This isn't a fact but I think this may be one of the funniest photos of the game (LIKE SIR? YOUR DAUGHTER IS SOBBING!).
48. Both Calvin and Dawn are on Sam's shrine.
49. Gus has a skateboard over his name.
50. Gregory has the soap bottle from his final bath in his shrine.
51. The music cuts out when Gregory isn't moving.
52. Same also blames himself for Gregory.
53. Gus never met his step mother.
54. Gus was crushed by the (totem) statues of his deceased relatives.
55. Dawn's light switch is the only one on
56. Most of the rules are about past deaths. (No playing outside without permission : Calvin, No answering door for strangers : Barbara, No messes after dark : Molly (???)).
57. Milton's garden has a castle (reference to the Unfinished Swan)
58. There is a small Sanjay shrine in the classroom
59. Edith JR did an assignment on her family history.
60. Lewis drew on his desk.
61. There is no death date for Milton on his peephole.
62. Edith JR wrote Milton's death date as 2003 (the year he disappeared).
63. The door from the flip book is in Milton's room.
64. Lewis' dream Palace is decorated with fish.
65. The gnomes scattered around the house are outside the original house in Edie's story.
66. The credits roll in reverse order.
AND THAT'S IT!! I had a few others I thought didn't need to go in.

The deaths of all the Finch kids are really so unbearably tragic. It really speaks to the quality of the writing and storytelling in ‘What Remains’. They’re written as so vivid and human and real, but also so many of them died so young. They were children, it’s so much harder for me to do the whole ‘well, let’s appreciate the life they did have’ thing when the majority of them didn’t even have a chance to become the people they could have become. And yet the image of who they could’ve been if they survived is so vivid in my mind.
Edith had that line about how she always imagined Molly as a girl she could be good friends with. Obviously if she didn’t die back in 1947 they wouldn’t really be at the same age group, but she’d be one hell of a Cool Aunt. I can only imagine her Weird Girl tendencies would’ve only grown stronger and stronger with age. Considering her fascination with animals, maybe she would’ve gone to study Zoology or Biology when she grew older? And since she was dissecting a sea star just before her canon death…
Sadly, I’m not sure if Barbara would’ve been able to resurrect her acting career. But there’s some subtle hints in her room that in reality she was more willing to move past it compared to her fictionalized version in that horror comic (which can’t be easy when you live in a room your dad themed entirely around your child-star years THANKS SVEN). That ‘horror convention’ seems to be an invention of the comic, Barbara’s actual room has a flier for a ‘Witch’s Ball’ at Orcas Island High School and a dress ready for it.
Barbara Finch didn’t actually spend her last day on earth hopelessly trying to revive her dead career, she was hoping to have a fun Halloween party like a regular teenager. Maybe the fact that it was hosted by the Orcas Island High School Drama Club implies she still had an interest in acting and theatre. Maybe she could’ve ended up as a classically trained actress with the child-stardom as just a fun quirk of her past? Or maybe she just wanted to take part in the Witches Ball because she likes Spooky Things? And she could have found her way back into the Horror Scene in a different way, like being a writer or costume designer or something?
Maybe Calvin could’ve become an Astronaut like he always wanted? But I think Calvin might’ve been more enthralled with the fantasy of science fiction than the reality of space travel. I’m thinking a lot about how Sam described Clavin in Gregory’s memoriam as ‘lost in his imagination’. Maybe he could’ve become a science fiction writer or something?
Walter didn’t technically die young, but he still certainly lost most of his years to the Curse. Like, a big thing about the tragedy of Walter to me is realizing his original childhood bedroom was themed after “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and trains.
Lil’ Walter did have an interest in adventure and travel, before his fears took it all away from him. If it wasn’t for the Curse, Walter could’ve actually something with it. Maybe he could’ve traveled around a bit and written about his experiences.
Lewis would’ve probably gone into game design. It’s not just how his fantasies manifest to us the players, but you can actually find books about game design and coding in his room. It seems that the problem was that his crappy job and his depression took away any opportunity he might have had to actually pursue this idea. Maybe if Milton never left, these three Finch siblings could’ve combined their creative skills together to make like, a very cool artsy game.
Speaking of which… man, Edith’s death stings the most because we got to know her far better than anyone else. And it’s not even the fact that she never got to share her all of her thoughts and creativity with the wider world that makes me the saddest. Getting to the end of the game and hearing just how much she was looking forwards to be with her son - even with all the hardships of being a teen mom, she was really looking forwards to it. To meet him, to share her stories with him. But instead, that worn old diary is the only connection between them...
And that’s like… part of what’s so great about WRoEF’s use of its own format. Like, the faux-interactive linearity of the Narrative Exploration/‘Walking Simulator’ is so perfect for selling this tragedy. The way each Death Flashback only moves forwards based on the actions of the Player, but it always moves on the same unchanging doomed path - really highlights both how stupidly preventable so many of these deaths feel and really make the Player wish there was a way to change them. After all, all they need is for Calvin to not swing so hard, for Gregory’s faucet to not turn back on, for Walter to not stand directly on those train tracks and everything would’ve been fine. But at the same time it’s so, so clear to the Player that this is an impossible wish. There is no other way these sequences can go - these deaths have already been written. The most you can you is linger, all you can do is delay the inevitable.
But it hurts.

i am so unwell about this game. a little part of me dies a little every time i think about lewis's story. how all he wanted was to be important, maybe to be just as special as the rest of his family that he heard about. to have some big ending.
and his memorial painting never got finished.

Some of Nico Collins songs fit Milton so good it’s almost uncanny, and no I will not explain in great detail but check out ‘The Unfinished Swan’ to get a general idea ;))
Here is some examples I think you should check out to see what I mean:
“Honest”
Okay so I’ll admit. Milton is one of my favorite characters and I tend to turn my favs into unhinged lunatics but in all honesty (😏) if you were to imagine the relationship between Milton and The Queen who we don’t have a name for, I think this song suits more than perfectly. I am aware she wasn’t interested in him but that doesn’t mean the song still doesn’t stand. And yes, I’m also aware that Milton might have been a little obsessed which goes against the premise of the song but when we take into account that he is canonically a bit of an asshole I think we can excuse it a little.
Hate me
See, if “honest” doesn’t sit quite right due to the dynamic feeling flipped I think you would enjoy this song more. Hate me is basically about a toxic relationship where Nico express that he will do ungodly things to himself if they don’t stay together. He expresses that he loves the way she hates him. TW for suicidal ideation tho- still a banging song imo and suits more than perfectly but should probably at least mention that. :))
Stranger
I’m not sure what to comment on this song. It only works if you believe that Milton didn’t die in 2003 and rather ran away from home (and lived till adulthood). I mean, I guess it could work but still. If you don’t want to imagine that though, know that this song is also a really good Lewis song :)) Honestly almost better for Lewis but I’m keeping it in the list.
Don’t wake me up
Now, for this song it doesn’t matter much if you think Milton died in 2003 or if he ran away from home, it works in both cases. Again, I should mention, this too is a great Lewis song^^ I believe a song could work for several characters at once which is why I’m including them.
Having written this I now realized that a lot of Nico’s songs works great for Lewis too. Just because of that I’ll add that ‘Set me free’ is a good song for him also and I think one look at the lyrics will explain why. This mfs are doing stuff to my brain and I am aware not everyone will agree but sometimes I just got to let the ‘tism win. If only I had the motivation to turn these into animatics 😞

I read this fanfiction where Molly was given the journal as a gift to preserve her memories but being ten she didn't see the point and found it hard.
Which leads to a grieving Edie writing that journal entry in Molly's journal.
Something that was based on 'Molly' saying 'I ate a lot of things that night' not 'tonight'.
I wanna reiterate that Edie did this out of grief like barely a year after Molly's death, not for some evil ulterior motive.
So I was wondering what you thought of this theory?
I feel like this tracks for Edie, and I firmly believe that very few discrepancies in this game can be written on as a writing mistake (despite there being some timeline issues such as, where were Sam and Calvin during Barbara's Final Scream, and allegedly I've read rumblings off Walter's death timeline being weird, but I can't quite find any certainties on that.).
Here is the thing, Molly's a pretty imaginative girl (as a fellow fantasy enjoyer.. I can relate), and based off the cute little drawings around her room and her love for her animals and nature I think there is space to say
I find it interesting that all the animals that Molly had become can be found in her room in some form. I know many people see this as Molly taking from her environment during a hallucination. I was led to believe this as well until now... I can totally see Edie, who probably at this point wanted to believe this wouldn't happen, wanting to 'honour' her firstborn by giving her final moments something that she would've loved. A fantastical tale where she gets to run wild as the animals found in her room. Who knows if Molly even wanted to be any of those things, it feels like a classic mom move to take like three things she knows her kid likes and just use those, similarly to how Gus is kind of just reduced to Kite Boy when he seemed to have his entire punk deal going on.
All this to say, yeah I think it's pretty neat, and I think it really adds onto the idea that Edie is doing this to preserve their legacy, especially if we go off of the idea that in her head, the curse is very real. I'd hate to feel like my family was insignificant just because of how little time they had...
I like to think that's a similar conclusion that Edith finds herself.
'I want you to be amazed that any of us ever had a chance to be here at all.'
#some scrap thoughts here#I firmly believe that the game tries to drill home that edith finds herself somewhere between Dawn and Edith's ideaologies of the curse#that there is nothing wrong with acknowledging the grim history of the finches#that it is important to face it and not run away#dawn finch#sam finch#But to not idolize it either#edie finch#Not to teach your children to risk themseles trying to live up to something before their gone#calvin finch#lewis finch#something something#mar speeks#wroef#what remains of edith finch#oh god i really need an ask tag#the history of the finches
