Sparks Fly is officially 18 years old: history of a song that was almost lost & how fans saved it from being left in the vault
The night of Halloween 2006, a 16-year-old girl named Taylor Swift had just released her first album. To promote her music, she'd go wherever venues would call her to perform. On October 31st, it was Portland, Oregon's turn, where Taylor opened for Jake Owen in a bar called Duke's. Owen, a country singer who also debuted in 2006, was 25 at the time.
Tumblr media
We can safely assume that Taylor was happy to meet Jake, as she wrote this on MySpace right after:
"Happy Halloween :-) Current mood: happy Happy Halloween! I’m sitting at the airport in Portland, Oregon.. About to get on a red-eye flight (Oh yes, I just said red-eye. Meaning, all night. This should be interesting…) to Toronto, Canada for another weekend of Rascal Flatts shows. Tonight was awesome. It was a show in Portland at a bar called Duke’s, I opened up for Jake Owen. And a little back-story, I’ve had his album on repeat for the past couple of months.. It’s an amazing album and I literally cannot stop listening to it. I’ve got every line memorized, and if you see me on a plane.. Chances are, I’m listening to some song off that album, at a volume level that’s probably going to cause long-term hearing damage someday. ANYWAY. I got to walk in on his sound check and meet him. Turns out he’s extremely cool, and had bought my album on iTunes. :-) And since I had to leave after one song of his set, he played my favorite song “8 Second Ride” first. Which is another reason why he’s awesome. And just to let everyone know, YES, I did dress up for Halloween. Yes, I stood onstage in an angel costume with huge wings (that really conflicted with my guitar playing). And I convinced my two guitar players Todd and Kevin to put on those little headbands with the devil ears attached. Haha. Oh yeah, it was great. It’s so awesome playing to a crowd and seeing some people who know the words to EVERY SONG! I love that the album is out, and I love that y'all are listening to it. You guys are so awesome, and I really appreciate all of your comments. I love you all so much. Thanks for everything."
The day Speak Now was announced, a known fan at the time revealed said that the song was written on November 2, 2006, so a couple of day after the Portland show.
The most incredible news is that "Sparks Fly" is going to be put on the album. That song is so incredible. Taylor wrote it on November 2, 2006, performed it live in Oroville on May 30, 2007, and now it is finally being released on October 25, 2010. Definitely a dream come true for Taylor fans worldwide! (X)
So on November 2, 2006 Taylor finished the first of the three known versions of a song called Sparks Fly. The first handwritten draft was showcased in a museum:
Tumblr media
On April 6, 2007, Taylor premiered the song in her native Reading, Pennsylvania, and then sang it again on May 30th in Sacramento, CA. This version was recorded by the same fan that revelead the writing date and uploaded online, gaining traction among the fanbase.
youtube
This live features a very prominent banjo and different lyrics:
“You stand there in front of me” -> “you stood there in front of me”
“Get me with those brown eyes, baby” -> “get me with those green eyes, baby”
“Take your open hand and take me out” -> “reach out open-handed and lead me out”
“Dim the paper lanterns” -> “don’t need more paper lanterns”
“This night is the 31st” -> “my heart is beating fast”
“So let’s make it count now, baby” -> “I could wait patiently”
“I’ll run my fingers” -> “I run my fingers”
“And make no borderlines” -> “gonna strike this match tonight”
“Forgive me when I can’t take in everything you are” -> “and lead me up the staircase”
“You kissed me like you meant it, I swear I saw sparks” -> “I’d love to hate it, but you make it like a firework show”
There was also an additional section: We stood at the gate (and you kiss me) / With the moon on your face / And you’ll kiss me
In December 2007, People Magazine releases a special photoshoot for Taylor's 18th birthday, which features photos of her bedroom, including the infamous Mirror Tracklist, a very early tracklist for her then-unnamed sophomore album. The tracklist inlcudes Sparks Fly as the 6th track.
Tumblr media
As we know, Sparks Fly ended up being dropped from Fearless and shelved. We actually don't know whether the song was recorded or not, although some sources say that it was, but ended up being excluded in favour of The Way I Loved You.
Throughout the Fearless era, the fans didn't forget about the live version of Sparks Fly. On June 13th, after Taylor premiered the song Mine, Taylor hosted a 13-hour meet & greet, where one of the most asked questions was what happened to Sparks Fly:
“'Sparks Fly' is a song I wrote a few years ago and played in concert. You guys have learned it and I think like it, which makes me really happy. When we did the 13-hour Meet and Greet at the CMA Fest, there was a comment I got over and over again. You guys were saying, 'So what about 'Sparks Fly?' Is it going to be on the next record? [...] I played that song at maybe one or two shows, and you guys just jumped on it and really made it something that I had to put on the album because you really showed interest in it.”
That week Taylor finished Speak Now, completing the last song (The Story Of Us) on the 16th, but taking into consideration what the fans had asked her, she went back to Sparks Fly, changing the lyrics one last time, especially the second verse:
First verse: You say my name for the first time, baby, and I fall in love in an empty bar -> You’re the kind of reckless that should send me runnin’, but I kinda know that I won’t get far.
Second verse: So reach out open-handed and lead me out to that floor / I don’t need more paper lanterns / Take me down, baby / Bring on the movie score / ‘Cause my heart is beating fast and you are beautiful / And I could wait patiently, but I really wish you would... -> My mind forgets to remind me you’re a bad idea / You touch me once and it’s really somethin’ / You find I’m even better than you imagined I would be / I’m on my guard for the rest of the world / But with you, I know it’s no good / And I could wait patiently, but I really wish you would…
Bridge: Just keep your beautiful eyes on me / Gonna strike this match tonight / And lead me up the staircase / Won't you whisper soft and slow / I’d love to hate it, but you make it like a firework show -> Just keep on keepin’ your eyes on me, it’s just wrong enough to make it feel right / And lead me up the staircase / Won't you whisper soft and slow / I'm captivated by you, baby I’m captivated by you baby, like a fireworks show.
I think that the line "I'm on my guard from the rest of the world" from Sparks Fly being written after "And you figure out why I'm guarded" from Mine is very telling of what Taylor was going through in her personal life.
Once the album was out, the secret code hidden in the song lyrics spelled: “Portland, OR”. The secret message seemed to confirm the theories that had followed the song all summer.
In July 2023, Jake Owen commented on being the ispiration behind the song: “It’s a great song and the speculation has always been funny to me. I’m sure Taylor probably laughs at it all too, but I’m happy to even have my name in the discussion around it. She’s an amazing girl and an amazing artist. It’s been incredible to see how she’s grown as a musician and what a global phenomenon she’s become.”
To me, Sparks Fly is a signature song of hers. Classic Swift story telling, sprinkled with teenage dreams in an euphoric rock production. It's really cool to see how fans played a fundamental role to save this song from oblivion. Can you imagine our reaction if we had got this song in the Fearless Vault or the Speak Now Vault?

Having spent the night together, Hyuk finds himself laying next to Joon, fingers tracing the surface of his chest whereas eyes shift from joon's face to his own fingers. He didn't quite imagine himself in such a setting, but then again, Hyuk has never taken the time to picture himself with anyone. A life of solitude has always been an open option to him, and yet here he was, nestled against someone who... saw him.
Shifting in his small bed, Hyuk soon straddles Joon, hands trailing the man's chest.
"What do you see in me?" Hyuk asks, genuinely wondering what had managed to catch his eye. "I used to have feelings for you during our younger days, but I never had the chance to get to know you like that..."
it was surprisingly easy for joonwoong to feel comfortable like that after so long of being alone, with having his arm wrapped around hyuk as their bodies were pressed close together, skin against skin. for a moment, he closed his eyes, as if he felt so at peace that he could simply fall asleep  —  but the motion of hyuk’s fingers on his bare chest and the feeling of the other’s warmth against him coaxed his eyelids open once more, fondness clear on them as he looked down at the man he was sharing the bed with.        the way he moved to straddle him came as a surprise, but joonwoong said nothing about it and simply positioned himself to look up at hyuk, a hand moving to rest gingerly on his waist, thumb drawing circles on it. this was a difficult question to answer, but he wanted to answer it nonetheless.  “ i don’t think i can answer that very directly or objectively. ”  he warned in a lighthearted and gentle tone before continuing.  “ but there was just something that drew me to you. i think you’re beautiful, in more ways than one. you’re funny and smart and just beautiful. you really bloom when you get comfortable. ”        with a hum, joonwoong reached out with his other hand to brush a strand of hair that had stuck to hyuk’s forehead away from his features.  “ i was… in a different place in my life back then. ”  when they had met, back when joonwoong was still a trainee, he was very much in love with his ex-fiancee, unable to see anyone else the way he saw him. however, things changed over the years  —  but by the time they did, hyuk was no longer such a constant presence in his life.  “ i suppose it was a case of bad timing. ”  he continued, letting his fingers brush gently against his cheek.  “ more importantly, i just feel like i’m at home when i’m with you. you’re the person i go to rest and recharge away from the chaos that is the rest of my life, like an oasis… ”  cupping his jaw, joonwoong tugged him down to press their lips together in a brief kiss, but kept their faces close even as the kiss parted.  “ you’re exactly what i need, hyuk. ”

Hi ;-) i read your vox Relation HCs and loved them he seemed so in Character. May i request Head Canons for Sir Pentoius x female Reader? Maybe the reader is kind of day dreamer but super loyal and maybe she tries to ‚baby‘ the Egg Boiz just to annoy Pentoius a bit with a response from him like „My Eggies are fearless warrios - not dolls for you to play family with!“ ?
soft!yandere!sir pentious x fem!reader "mother egg" headcanons ! !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
masterlist !
warnings; jealousy, mild possessiveness, this turned out to be tooth rotting fluff, a little bit of arguing (it's quickly resolved), not many warnings that I can think of; but if i missed any, please let me know!
additional notes; i sort of set this in a pre-hotel timeline for him, where you two are living in his airship (sort of? not like the one from the pilot, not a battleship but more like his home), i hope i did your idea justice!! i really did love it. it's a very cute idea :]] i also made him incredibly soft in hindsight, as i can't stop myself when writing him D: I hope it didn't take away anything from your og request :[

When Sir Pentious took you in as his assistant, he hadn't expected the Egg Boiz to grow so fond of you. He expected them to get along with you, yes, they practically got along with everyone (for better or for worse), but their attachment to you was... different.
You were a great assistant, even if you got lost in your daydreams sometimes. He didn't mind it much, always being gentle when he tapped you on your hand or shoulder, repeating what he said before.
He both was and was not a patient man, as it depended on the situation. He was incredibly meticulous with his work, preferring to take his time; but sometimes, he'd grow tired and restless and just want to be done with it already.
In these times, he did his best to not try and rush it. Instead, he'd stand from his work and take a moment to stretch; most times, he'd seek you out to talk to you while he made himself a snack, or just sit on the sofa beside you, reading his book quietly as you do whatever it is you're doing at the time.
It helps to be near you, he doesn't even really have to speak with you for it to be as calming as it is. It confounds him, how this occurred-- he's a man of science, but he'd long come to realize he's also a man of emotion. He tries not to pry into his own reasonings too much, lest he uncover something he much rather would've stayed hidden, thank you very much.
Something relaxing to distract him from any hiccup he may have encountered within his work, and you always seemed to soothe his frustration; so more and more, he's began seeking you out during these little breaks of him.
During one of those times, where he'd tasked you with watching the Egg Boiz while he worked to repair a broken music box he'd made for you (it wasn't any fault in his craftmanship that caused it to stop working properly, because he's sure that any music box made by the most world-renowned makers would break after an Egg Boi knocked off a high shelf), he was already irritated
(not at you, oh, never at you; his annoyance was pointed entirely at the culprit, one his more rowdy Egg Boiz you'd managed to name 'greg'. it is beyond him why you love naming the Egg Boiz as much as you do, but to his it's just all harmless fun, so he permits it), making it hard to focus on his work. He was getting frustrated, tiny gears never seeming to want to stay in their correct spots making him grind his teeth.
Eventually, when he was oh-so close to just throwing the thing at the wall and making a new one-- he took a deep breath, and set it down. He's sure you wouldn't be very happy if he did that. It's not often that he gets this frustrated with one of his projects or inventions, but the fact he knew exactly who the culprit was behind it certainly didn't help.
Recently, he's noticed that the Egg Boiz hang around you a lot more often than the prior months you'd been with him. Was it absolutely ridiculous that he'd begun to feel jealous of the Egg Boiz?
Why yes, yes it was. And while he wasn't necessarily proud to admit that fact, he was still willing to do so. Maybe even out loud, if he was feeling bold that moment (even though he knows he'd most definitely regret it soon after).
But with how much they were around you, when he could barely get a moment of peace with you anymore because of their constant antics-- ones that you appeared to whole-heartedly encourage, under the basis that "They're basically kids, Pent! Let them play."
It was laughable how quickly he'd backed down when you called him that, Pent. He liked it, it felt so intimate-- and perhaps, that feeling was in part rooted in the time period from which he came, the Victorian era-- the era of etiquette, poise, and trying to maintain an amicable yet distant front. Untouchable, above all others.
Pentious never did agree with those values of his time, and he'd followed them best he could-- though as he did, he only found he'd hated them even further once he'd put them into practice.
But, because everyone else was doing so-- the only way Pentious could connect with others was to act like that. Back then, people only associated with those who were like them, or at least acted 'posh'. He'd found himself falling back on that safety net, decades of teaching himself that behavior had left him hard-pressed to try and undo it in full.
Then you came along-- wonderful, beautiful, and interesting you, with all your daydreams that's leave you head up in the clouds more often than not. The first few times you'd done it, he was offended. Had he really bored you that terribly?
But you were quick to reassure him that, no, he did not bore you; it was a sign of trust that you did that, started daydreaming with him nearby. Being in hell had taught you, forced you, to stay vigilant at all times. Before meeting and subsequently being taken in by Pentious, you didn't even feel safe enough in your own 'home' (if it could even be called that) to slip away into your daydreams.
It caused a warm, fuzzy feeling to find its way into Pentious' heart, his mind-- his very soul, and he was unable to smother it in any capacity, and with every day it burned even brighter.
When he stood from his work bench, stretching his arms above his head before making his way out of his workroom and to the living room, he knew the Egg Boiz would be with you, obviously. He'd told you to keep an eye on them as he worked, because he knew that they'd be coming and going in his workshop if you in there with him.
As he got closer and closer, and they were... eerily quiet, but there was a specific phrase that they just kept saying, usually in the framing of "what happens next, egg mother?" or "i like this story, egg mother!". The Egg Boiz were always a very loud bunch of creatures, and sometimes more fit for parts in a comedy rather than the army he'd created them to be--
It confused him to no end, this new title that he had a sinking feeling referred to you. The Egg Boiz didn't have any set gender, as they didn't care for that sort of social construct. They were just Egg Boiz, not even necessarily male-- they just were.
So, maybe they'd dubbed another Egg Boi as the aforementioned 'egg mother', but he highly doubted it. He moved faster, and when he entered the living room,
You were sitting on the sofa, a children's story book held in your lap and a soft smile playing on your lips. The Egg Boiz, every single one of them he believes-- sat around the floor, quiet and as peaceful as he'd ever seen them (besides when they're sleeping, but even then some of them are rowdy sleepers), as you read 'The Tales of Mother Goose'.
He cleared his throat, and you looked up at him-- "Could you ssssstep out into the hall for a little, pleasssse? I'd like to a have a word with you." You were a little surprised by this- had you upset him? Sure, the reason you played so hard on the fact that the Egg Boiz were practically children was originally to poke at Pentious a little-- but you didn't expect it to actually get to him.
It worried you, but regardless of your shock, confusion, and concern, you nodded, and shut the book. You stood, but the Egg Boiz protested, obviously.
"It's okay, I'll be back soon. I just have to talk with Pent for a little.", that didn't soothe the Egg Boiz by much, but they stopped grabbing at your leg to keep you with them.
Pentious felt his mouth twisted into a scowl, and he turned with a flourish; making his way to the hallway just outside the living room, and you followed soon after.
His back was turned when you entered the hallway, and you quietly asked "Uhm... Is everything okay?", and Pentious, ever one for dramatics-- turned around, arms crossed over his chest.
As best as he could, he tried to stay mad with you, but the edge of his voice softened as soon as he turned around, signaling the beginning of the end for what he'd intended to be a stern talking to.
"My eggiesssss are not children to have sssstorybooksss read to! They are fearle--" It wasn't often that you cut him off, but you'd had this conversation dozens of times by this point-- he'd never pulled you aside for it, always waiting until the Egg Boiz were all gone for one reason or another. "Fearless warriors, I know. That's what you made them for, but all fearless warriors have to have something to fight for, shouldn't they?" You reasoned, and took Pentious' silence as a sign for you to continue your train of thought.
"They act like children-- they'll grow up eventually, even if it's not like how human children do, but for now, I think they should be treated kindly. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, right?"
It was difficult to smother the smile forming on your face at how quickly Pentious gave in, so you didn't even bother to hide it.
"Well... I ssssuppossse you do have a point..." Pentious conceded, and you rushed him with a hug. He forze for a moment, before-- just a bit cautiously, but still happily-- returned the favor.
You asked him to come back and sit with you, and oh, how could he ever say no to that beaming smile of yours?

Had what I think is a fun and genius idea to make newspapers for each era (debut and rep will have their album covers, logos, and tracklist replaced when the rerecordings come out to, you know, support her) but I have no clue what else to put for debut and I feel like I will be similarly lost for every newspaper I do.
So far for debut (the only one I've started in Photoshop), I have the outro to the album's booklet, all the little doodles are also from the booklet (Technically, the inner sleeve of the vinyl. because the text is covering less of the doodles there) and the 'love love love Taylor' is from some signed promo she did during the debut era. 'Issue No. 1' for the album's chronological order in the Taylor Swift Cinematic Universe™, the date of the album's release (rerecordings will be shown as October 27, 2014 • October 27, 2023), and I also want to include important things that happened during that era, such as writing a song about Tim McGraw at like 15 (If I'm wrong about the timeline and mysteriously disappear, blame Effi), then performing it to the actual Tim McGraw. (Fearless will have 'This is my first Grammy, y'all!' and I have a few ideas for 1989, but that's about it). The box in the top left will have my favorite lyrics or saying from that era. Speak Now will likely be "I was enchanted to meet you" since that's the song the album was originally going to be named after and I feel it represents it just as well as Speak Now, if not better. Same goes for A Place In This World, also almost the album's title if I remember correctly. reputation will have "there will be no further explanation, there will just be reputation.' And I might put "My name is Taylor, and I was born in 1989!' for 1989 but not too sure about that one. I know so much about this woman but when I get the idea for something like this, suddenly I know nothing.
Anyway, if anyone has their favorite quotes from interviews or songs or even a speech she gave on tour or a Tumblr/Instagram comment (I really like 'Hang on. It gets easier, and then it gets okay, and then it feels like freedom.' but not sure where I can fit that on the 1989 one) I would love to hear it! Bonus points for sourcing it, because I do want to see the original or hear her voice saying it (I could listen to her just talk forever). I know I could watch interviews with her, but then I'd have to watch every single one. Don't get me wrong, I've pretty much almost done that, but only for fun with no agenda of writing anything down. And that took a very very long time. So again, I beg, quotes, lyrics, comments, posts, anything you can think of will be super helpful and much appreciated 🫶🏽

I have an alternate universe Buggy that's been ratallng around in my head. A female Buggy that's like Taylor Swift, so she got into music and wants to be a singer. She spent most of her time on the Oro building up her guitar and piano skills. She stole the guitar from the musician(was aware but let it happen) and begged Roger to get a piano. She didn't inherently have the greatest vocals and got teased, specifically by Shanks. Dreams of being in front of a crowd cheering her on and singing her songs. Those dreams are what drive her. It goes hand in hand with canon Buggy’s inferiority complex and constantly seeking attention to be a star.
The reason I can imagine it is because Buggy would be the kind to right the most unhinged lyrics that TS is known for. Also a lot of her lyrics reflect Buggy.
Mirrorball - And they called off the circus Burned the disco down When they sent home the horses And the rodeo clowns I'm still on that tightrope I'm still trying everything to get you laughing at me I'm still a believer but I don't know why I've never been a natural All I do is try, try, try I'm still on that trapeze I'm still trying everything To keep you looking at me
Me! - I know that I'm a handful, baby, uh I know I never think before I jump And you're the kind of guy the ladies want (And there's a lot of cool chicks out there) I know that I went psycho on the phone I never leave well enough alone And trouble's gonna follow where I go (And there's a lot of cool chicks out there)
Karma - ‘Cause karma is my boyfriend Karma is a god Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend Karma's a relaxing thought Aren't you envious that for you it's not? Sweet like honey, karma is a cat Purring in my lap 'cause it loves me Flexing like a goddamn acrobat Me and karma vibe like that Ask me what I learned from all those years Ask me what I earned from all those tears Ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here (I'm still, I'm still here)
peace - Our coming-of-age has come and gone Suddenly the summer, it's clear I never had the courage of my convictions As long as danger is near And it's just around the corner, darling ‘Cause it lives in me No, I could never give you peace
long story short - Fatefully I tried to pick my battles 'til the battle picked me Misery Like the war of words I shouted in my sleep And you passed right by I was in the alley, surrounded on all sides The knife cuts both ways If the shoe fits, walk in it 'til your high heels break
Never Grow Up - And no one's ever burned you Nothing's ever left you scarred And even though you want to Just try to never grow up
So here I am in my new apartment In a big city, they just dropped me off It's so much colder than I thought it would be So I tuck myself in and turn my nightlight on Wish I'd never grown up I wish I'd never grown up
Endgame - I hit you like, "Bang" We tried to forget it, but we just couldn't And I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em Reputation precedes me, they told you I'm crazy I swear I don't love the drama, it loves me
The whole of Dear Reader and most of Anti Hero. New Romantics just sounds like a pirate anthem. So definitely something Buggy would write.
Here are the albums that would be about different exes. The exes that had a lasting impact on her.
Red Hair Shanks - Debut, Fearless, and Red
Donquixate Doflamongo - Speak Now, a little of Fearless and Red.
Charlotte Katakuri - Speak Now
Sir Crocodile - 1989
Sakazuki/Akainu -folklore, evermore
Dracula Mihawk - reputation, Lover, folklore, evermore
Midnights is a mix of them. Also she falls back in love with Mihawk and Crocodile after they form the Cross Guild.
Her exes have a hard time forgetting her and its made even worse by their enemies using the songs about them to torment them. It also doesn't help that their subordinates and families listen to her songs too. I'm still figuring out the timeline. Akainu happens before Mihawk but she is so hurt by him that she wasn't able to write any songs about him until much later.
None of this is a commentary on Taylor Swift or her personal life. Just my interpretations and how they'd fit.

so like every writer I have a bunch of ideas that i seem to not be able to finish. maybe a little motivation might push me. so these are some of my writing that are almost finished. if there is a specific fic that you want to see lmk and it'll probably give me the motivation to actually finish and publish.
unwritten rule - joe burrow x head coach's lil sister (rookie joe burrow is told the most famous unwritten rule, do not date the head coach's little sister, but he is famous for not listening) *needs to be heavily edited*
spoiled - lando norris x reader (based on lando eating expired chicken on max's stream. reader got the ick and decided to do something about it) *just needs to be edited! I'll probably post it soon*
soft spot - max verstappen x reader (for days reader has been waking up with knots in their back, max has a solution to her problems) *i have the dialogue just need the bones*
rock me - aew!cody rhodes x fem!reader (reader and cody used to be very close. years have passed and now he has his own promotion. what happens when they are reunited at double or nothing) *iffy about this one, an old fic*
fearless - kelly severide x firefighter!reader (being fearless leads to reckless actions) *old fic that can be edited and be ready to go*
in love - jamie benn x fem!reader (jamie was never a relationship guy, fulyl focusing on his career. you enter as a new member of the stars team who makes him rethink about relationships) *needs to be edited*
Okay my biggest self indulgent one is a full fledge story. It's a f1driver!oc. This one I love to work on but it's a very detailed story. character is fully written out (name, age, ethnicity, backstory, family) I didn't give her a romantic lead yet, she has 4 drivers pinning for her. The way I would release this is not in timeline order, just little blurbs here and there to build the story and imagines to progress the story. if you are interested in seeing this lmk. I always add new things everyday.

In another world/timeline/dimension/universe:
Mikey comes out of Donatellos lab, "Hey Guys, I just found something weird!" Donatello is annoyed at this. Leo and Raph decided to just watch incase they need to dodge a tool, or something.
"Mikey, how many times do I have to tell you, to stay out of my lab!?" Donatello says in exasperation.
"Well your computer is better to watch videos on, but that's not the point. I found something weird with your Computer," Mikey replies, "Let me show you!" He drags Donatello back into the lab, Leo and Raph follow behind out of curiosity.
Mikey pulls up a video on Donatellos computer. It showes a 3D model of Rise Leo, in blue swim trunks, blue crocs, his mask with long trans tails, and an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, playing a Beat Saber type game. He's singing along to the song and looks just a second away from dancing instead of playing the game.
"You found someone using a turtle model to play games? Is that it?" Donatello asks.
Mikey shakes his head and pulls out his phone, "No, I was like, 'I'm gonna subscribe, and watch more on my phone later.'" He opens Youtube on his phone and searches for the channel. "Only I can't find this channel, or any of the videos when searching on my phone, Dude!"
Mikey hands his phone to Donatello, to show a search page that doesn't show the channel on the computer, despite having typed in the exact name of the channel/video title.
"Mikey, did you accidentally connect to a different reality, through YouTube, on my computer?" The purple coded turtle asked slowly, while trying to process this odd discovery.
"And the video you chose to show us is an alternate Fearless? Why not their Raph?" Raphael asks a little annoyed but amused. Leo elbows him in the side, "Hey, you haven't said anything about this either!"
"Red doesn't stream very often," Mikey shrugs, before going to the channel to the Rad Angel playlist, "and alot of them are work out streams, so not as fun to watch." Now the screen is showing a 3D Rise Raph model in workout gear doing guided basic stretches. Raphael goes wide eyed at the site of the large spikey turtle in red.
Donatello moves Mikey out of the way, "I'm going to look this over to see if you did anything." Mikey lets out an annoyed shout, "I'm not fully blaming you Mikey, maybe something happened when those other turtles visited us last. Now kindly leave my lab, all of you!" He shoves them out of the lab, and locks the door behind them, before returning to the computer.
Donatello spends a few minutes, not really finding any problems or anything that would be harmful to his equipment. So he decides to binge his way through some of the videos and VODs. He'll tell his brothers it's safe, and perfectly fine to continue watching this...later, after taking lots of notes on this alternate reality were they are VTubers.
--------------------
Masterpost
This might, or might not be canon. If it is, well it's a way to introduce crossovers later. If not, well it's just a bit of fun writing.
I could not figure how to write Leo in this short, I don't know why.

Kaylor Swiftgron: Which Muse Inspired Which Songs on Red & 1989
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the precipice of 1989 TV's release and amidst the Kaylorification of 1989 TV's rollout, I thought it'd be a good time to figure out which muses aligned to which songs. I did my research, which includes: lyrical analysis & music video analysis, the timing of when songs were written, which producers and co-writers were credited to each song, social media posts, and where the girls were in real time. Shout out to @sophietv for her incredible work on the Kaylor timelines and evidence, and to @swiftgronmasterpost and @swiftgronmasterpost for their work to outline everything from Achele to Rivergron to Swiftgron. Round of applause to you both!!
Let's get into it!! (and if you want to just see my conclusions for which songs are about which muse, scroooolllll to the bottom)
The Red Muses
2011
Red was written in two phases. First, she worked with her producer from Speak Now & Fearless, Nathan Chapman. They wrote 25 songs together between February and October 2011. She took these songs to Scott Borchetta and he congratulated her on a finished album, but she wanted to experiment with other producers and writers to play with new sounds. So, after October 2011 she started working with a handful of other producers to write more tracks for Red. Here's a breakdown of Red songs by producer.
Nathan Chapman:
State of Grace
Red
All Too Well
I Almost Do
Stay, Stay, Stay
Sad Beautiful Tragic
Starlight
Begin Again
The Moment I Knew
Girl At Home
Martin & Shellback:
I Knew You Were Trouble
22
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
Message in a Bottle
Bhasker: Holy Ground
Wilson: Treacherous, Come Back...Be Here
Walker: Everything Has Changed
Lind & Bjorkland: The Very First Night
McKenna: I Bet You Think About Me
The first time we know for sure Dianna and Taylor interacted was on September 4th, 2011 at the Fairfax Flea Market, which implied that the songs Taylor wrote with Chapman weren't about Dianna.
Karlie and Taylor dated (I think) starting in the summer or early fall of 2011. I think they weren't expecting anything super serious, but it was one of those flirtations that starts out strong and feels good with them and all of the sudden you're in love and you barely believe it and feel ridiculous for knowing but you have a feeling this person is for you, maybe forever... It sounds right for Taylor who has admitted how fast & hard she tends to fall for people when she's in love.
Taylor attended the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show during NYFW and sat front row next to Anna Wintour on Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Karlie walked in the show (slay). This was also the day that Taylor spent with a Vogue interviewer for her iconic January 2012 Vogue Cover and Article where she is quoted as saying "I love Karlie Kloss! I want to bake cookies with her!" She said this straight after leaving the Rodarte Fashion Show.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, Karlie was quoted in a magazine as having been introduced to Taylor Swift at the Met Gala and they joked about baking cookies together! They both attended the Met Gala in May 2011, just four months before the Rodarte Fashion Show/Vogue Interview day! So it's pretty weird that Taylor would say the exact same thing, unprompted, when she saw a photo of Karlie Kloss at a fashion designer's studio on the exact same day she sat front row for a fashion show Karlie walked in!!
I imagine that Taylor and Karlie fell into something new and beautiful and sweet by accident. The Rodarte Show was on a Tuesday, maybe they met up for coffee the next day on Wednesday, September 14th in NYC? Who's to say!
All that said, I think Begin Again is about Karlie. It was written sometime between February and October 2011, which would've been a really, really fast turnaround for it to be about Dianna. Between the music video and the lyrical connections, it's very Kaylor coded. Starlight also could plausibly be about Karlie because they attended the Met together in 2010 and 2011, and their 2011 dresses were sparkly and tbh Karlie looked hot AF.
But, let's also remember that Taylor is on tour and just got herself out of two on-again-off-again, fairly toxic relationships, and as she said herself in Begin Again that the last 8 months she's been heartbroken and scared to get hurt from love (earliest would've been June 2010-February 2011 and latest would've been February-October 2011). Plus she's not even 22 years old, so she's not necessarily good at being in relationships yet. She's in a messy place, and she falls in love like a ton of bricks.
I think that this delicate, precious new thing with Karlie didn't work out (not for malice or hurting each other, just life) and over the winter they were distant but were still in contact.
2012
On January 17, 2012 we get tweets from BOTH Karlie and Dianna about the *iconic* Vogue article. This makes me think:
1. Karlie is still interested in exploring this new relationship with Taylor
2. Dianna and Taylor have kept in touch and have a lil something something going on, a little curiosity they might want to explore
3. Taylor likes public attention, and she likes feeling wanted, and she's got two hot ass women who want her. Do you blame the girl for being messy!?!
Dianna and Taylor attend the same pre-Oscars party on February 24th, 2012, and this is where I think Swiftgron starts to take off. Dianna is all happy and heart eyes online for the next three weeks until the Speak Now Tour ends. They're spotted together frequently in March and April. The Shirley MacLaine birthday party thing happens April 25th, Dianna's circus birthday party is April 28th, and I would bet anything they started hooking up sometime these first two months. I think Holy Ground was written about Dianna's birthday party, with the note on the door with the joke we made, and that was the first day.
Taylor writes Everything Has Changed and Run on May 15th, 2012, with Ed Sheeran, and records both EHC and The Last Time on May 28th, 2012. Everything Has Changed seems Swiftgron (thanks Gaylor twt for helping me figure out that the freckles are IN Dianna's green eyes bc girl bye I was full of questions). The Last Time is almost certainly about Liz.
But Run is very Kaylor coded! The pale blue eyes, use of darling, the laugh like a child (Begin Again), locket, picture frame...
On May 31st, 2012, Dianna is bearding hard with Henry Joost to distract from her appearance with GLAAD. I have a working hypothesis that Taylor Swift hates beards and is not a fan of having to use them or be with people who have them. I just don't think it works for her with how insanely famous she is, the guys are hyperscrutinized and she's honestly not very good at being a convincing heterosexual woman. I think there's some conflict between Taylor and Dianna because of the beard.
By June 10th, 2012, Taylor has written 22, WANEGBT, and IKYWT. I am inclined to believe that WANEGBT is about Emily or Liz. Same thing with IKYWT. 22 is about her besties and living life and being carefree and embracing all of the beauty and pain of falling in and out of love and everything that is your early 20s.
We get the whole Hyannis Port x Kennedys summer week of pap walks featuring Swiftgron all over the place! But it seems like they probably break up later in July. This was a hot and cold relationship for real.
WANEGBT is released on 8/13 and Dianna tweets at Taylor (like never ever?). On September 29, 2012 Dianna and Naya Rivera are on a cheeky, lil sexy vacation in Paris. Taylor goes to Paris that same weekend to film Begin Again at the Love Lock bridge (Karlie is also in Paris but there's no evidence to show that they saw each other at all).
However, I wouldn't put it past Taylor and Karlie to have seen each other while Swiftgron was cold. Perhaps in September 2012 right around when she filmed Begin Again?
October 17, 2012 Taylor writes This Love in LA according to her diary entries. So I think This Love is about the Swiftgron reconciliation for whatever happened this summer. Things are good for a bit, they go to the Ripple of Hope gala together on December 3rd, 2012. They're pictured together on December 6th, 2012 and Dianna's all cryptic online about her secret love.
Quick Aside: Karlie and Josh have been "officially together" ever since June 2012, but they were first seen together in November 2012 when they both attended the VS Fashion Show. I'm under the impression that these gay celebrities in their early twenties only needed a beard when they were in another relationship they were distracting away from. They didn't need a beard, they could just say they were focused on friends and their career (aka 1989 era). So who was Karlie dating in mid 2012 that needed to be covered up with plausible deniability? This would've been in the works for a bit before they launched it in November 2012.
Also, super interesting that Karlie also met Taylor for the "first time" at the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, hmm? Anywayssss.
2013
I think everything Swiftgron blew up on February 14th, 2013 with the 'I Do' episode of Glee where Dianna Agron and Naya Rivera hook up on screen. Taylor made a whole big deal about this episode containing one of her songs and encouraged her fans to watch, but her song wasn't in the show (tweet was later deleted). But picture this: Happy Valentine's Day, watch your girlfriend hook up with the girl she told you not to worry about!! And then learn that they actually did hookup when y'all were on a break, like two weeks before y'all got back together!! Oooh boy!! I'm pretty sure this was what inspired Babe (in the music video Taylor was the mistress, but IRL Taylor was the main character who got cheated on instead of the mistress!!).
Dianna is a mess on Twitter after that and there might have been about two months of back & forth, maybe some breakup sex, but I think Swiftgron died dead by the time the article about them secretly dating dropped on April 16th, 2013.
The Red tour started on March 18th, 2013 and I can't imagine that made things any easier for Swiftgron. Meanwhile... I think Karlie and Taylor re-reconnected in this time period.
The 1989 Muses
2013
Taylor wrote 1989 while on tour for Red (except for This Love, according to the diary entry it was written on 10/17/2012). I think the breakup songs are about Dianna and the love songs (excluding This Love) are allllll Karlie.
If Taylor and Karlie did reconnect in Fall 2012, then Spring 2013 would be a long six months later...
Taylor and Karlie "meet for the first time" (which we have so much proof that it's not but like, okay, fine) on November 13, 2013 at the Victoria's Secret Fashion show. We know this isn't their first meeting or flirtationship, but it certainly is their first public outing to test what people say about their friendship.
Then, I'd wager Taylor plays "cat & mouse for a month or two or three" until they officially are girlfriends on March 6, 2014. Yay!!!
Songs About Dianna:
Red: Holy Ground, Everything Has Changed, Come Back...Be Here, Better Man, Babe
1989: Clean, Wonderland, All You Had To Do Was Stay, I Wish You Would
Songs About Karlie:
Red: State of Grace, Treacherous, Stay, Stay, Stay, Starlight, Begin Again, Message in a Bottle, Run, The Very First Night
1989: Welcome to New York, Blank Space, Style, OOTW, Wildest Dreams, How You Get the Girl, I Know Places, You Are in Love, New Romantics

Writing Of Fearless Timeline
DISCLAIMER: None is this is my opinion unless stated otherwise. Some dates might be wrong, I was not in the fandom when Fearless was released, I joined shortly after Fearless Platinum dropped. If you saw the rollout of the release, I'd love to hear your story!
Please credit me if you use this timeline!
Early 2005: Taylor has a writing session with the Warren Brothers. They write That's When.
[BMI Article from May 2005] “She has written songs with a list of renowned writers including Troy Verges, Brett Beavers, and the Warren Brothers.”
[Alexa Skill for Taylor's Version] “That's When is a song that I wrote with the Warren Brothers and it was really fun writing with them because they're just hilarious people in general and I remember it was a classic Nashville songwriting session: you sit around a room, you go to a publishing office, you sit around in a room, everybody's got guitars and we just kind of came up with this song about space and independence and what happens when two people love each other but one of them just needs to take a breather and think about it and what would happen if rather than saying "No, if you're not sure, then leave and I don't want to talk to you ever again", what would happen if the partner was like "Do what you need to do, I'm here and I'm sure that I want to be with you, so if you need to take some space then do it", and we're just kind of playing around with that idea and we came up with this song.”
It's also possible that That's When was written later (but before September 2005) and they wrote Long Time Going and Welcome Distraction first.
February 12, 2005: Taylor writes with Scooter Carusoe for the first time, but it's unclear if they wrote You All Over Me, or Thirteen Blocks or Pretty Words. Either way, You All Over Me was written in early 2005. Scooter produced the demo, which leaked in 2017.
Scott's email to Taylor's manager, Dan Dymtrow (thanks @backup-baby-backup for sending this to me!):
Tumblr media
[Alexa Skill for Taylor's Version] “The song You All Over Me is one that I wrote with a writer who goes by the name Scooter Carusoe, his name is Travis Hill. This was one of the songs that I remember us painstakingly going over the lyrics and trying to come up with all these different symbolic imagery references to how it could feel after you have your heart broken, just to feel like you've been ruined by the whole thing and I think that's one of the hardest things about heartbreak, this feeling like it's damaged you and now you carry that damage with you.”
Late 2005: Taylor writes Don't You with Tommy Lee James.
[Alexa Skill for Taylor's Version] “Don't You is a song that I wrote with Tommy Lee James, who's a fantastic writer. We wrote it about the idea of seeing someone that you used to have a thing for and seeing them out in public for the first time after you've heard that they've moved on and that you know your life is your life is kind of in shambles and they have moved on and they're really happy and it's almost like even them being nice to you hurts you because you're in such a state of pain and you haven't moved on yet, so that was a really fun song to write because that's just a well spring of emotion to draw from.”
[Tommy Lee James] “The crazy thing about this song is that I remember writing with Taylor that day, and I remember her just being really sharp and smart. I knew I was writing a good song. And then normally, back then I’d probably just do like a worktape or whatever, and I would throw it into my Garage Band on my computer just to save it and label it. But for some reason, I never labeled it correctly. And then, all of a sudden, Taylor comes out with ‘Tim McGraw’, and all of a sudden she’s a star. My publisher at the time, she’s going, ‘Where is that song you wrote with Taylor!?’ And I was like…'I cannot find it.'”
There are three demos of Don't You. Taylor only sings in a piano worktape, while other people sing on the other two. The IC owns these three demos since 2019. They bought them from Music Row. They described the worktape as: “A melancholic piano demo with haunting vocals, that have a sadness and longing to them, this was likely recorded in 2005, and was probably considered for the first album. Taylor runs into her ex and feels pain, because it brings back so many hard feelings and sad emotions, she feels that she still loves him and wonders why he doesn’t feel the same way, she will try her best to go along to go on with her life.”
Somewhere in 2005: Taylor releases a digital EP called “Majorly Indie Demos”. The tracklisting is unclear but the demos of Sweet Tea & God's Graces and We Were Happy were there.
There are two demos of We Were Happy, one acoustic worktape and one studio demo. Both of them have leaked.
One thing that I want to point out is that Majorly Indie was Arturo Buenahora's website. Buenahora is the executive who signed Taylor to music publisher Sony/ATV and introduced her to many songwriters, including Scooter Carusoe and Deric Ruttan. Buenahora left Sony/ATV and founded his own publishing house called Ole Majorly Indie, which then changed its name to Anthem Entertainment. This is Liz Rose's music publisher.
September 2006: Taylor writes Come In With The Rain.
Description of the Come In With the Rain Acoustic Demo: 4 min 03 sec. Simply Taylor and her acoustic guitar in this early demo recording. Passionate guitar playing during the breaks between vocal parts when Taylor stops singing. [Not Leaked]
She'll later release an early mix of the song on MySpace also in September. Posting the song on MySpace got her to surpass 1 million followers.
October 12, 2006: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor doodles Come In With The Rain on her diary.
Tumblr media
November 2, 2006: Taylor writes Sparks Fly. This song was considered for Fearless before being cut.
December 1, 2006: [Interview with CMT] Taylor talks about the Debut rejects that will later become some of the Fearless Vault Songs in 2021.
“I've been very selfish about my songs. I had this dream of this project [Debut Album] coming out for so many years now that I just stockpiled. I'm so happy that I did because now we have a second album full of songs and a third album full of songs, and I don't have to lift a finger.”
December 2006: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor writes White Horse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Original Lyrics from Taylor's Journal
Tumblr media
Another handwritten version from the Grammy's Museum (partial photo)
[People Magazine] "[White Horse] was written with frequent collaborator Liz Rose in a 30-minute spurt while sitting in the hallway of a Nashville recording studio-Swift scribbled the lyrics into her ever-present journal. "I write stuff so fast that it comes out really messy!" she says. The writing session was "like therapy," and helped her reach the conclusion that ends the song. "Someday I'll find somebody who makes me feel like a princess," she says of the sentiment. "This isn't my last fairy tale."
[Liz Rose] She was in the studio doing some vocal changes. She just called me and said, "Hey, I have an idea, will you come into the studio so we can write this?"
Description of the White Horse Studio Demo: 3 min 36 sec. A perfect acoustic studio version. Taylor sounds so young here, it makes us think this song was written prior to the first album.
December 28, 2006: Performance at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville. Unknown setlist except for Nashville and Our Song. Sam Armstrong was there and will comment in 2018 that Taylor performed a song about him there. It's unclear whether it was White Horse or Nashville (which is not about him, by the way).
Early 2007: Taylor writes The Other Side Of The Door.
Description of The Other Side of the Door Studio Demo: “4 minutes and 01 seconds: Starts with a catchy drum loop similar to the studio version of "Permanent Marker" and has less instrumentation. Very country with electric guitars coming in sooner.” She sounds SO young in the demo, it's basically the same baby voice she has in the Christmas songs. [Leaked]
April 2007: Taylor writes You're Not Sorry, possibily about Sam Armstrong.
[Interview from October 2008] “I wrote it about maybe a year and half ago about this guy that kept apologizing and kept doing the same thing over and over again and after a while you just have stand up to that person and say, ‘You’re not sorry. At all... bye.’”
“I wrote a few more songs [other than Should've Said No] on this upcoming record about him just because, you know, I wasn’t done being mad about it. I know he's on the edge of his seat waiting.
“It is about this guy who turned out to not be who I thought I was. He came across as Prince Charming. Well, it turned out Prince Charming had a lot of secrets that he didn’t tell me about. And one by one, I would figure them out. I would find out who he really was. I wrote this when I was at the breaking point of, ‘You know what? Don’t even think that you can keep on hurting me.’ It was to a point where I had to walk away.”
Gossip Speculation: The other songs for Sam are: White Horse, You're Not Sorry, Come In With The Rain and The Other Side Of The Door.
May 15, 2007: During an interview with Unrated Magazine conducted while she was getting ready for the ACMs Awards, Taylor says she has written more or less 75 songs, including Fearless.
[Unrated Magazine Interview] “I've got, like, 75 written, and we just have to whittle it down to whatever number of songs we want to put on the album, and start recording. I wrote this song that I'm really excited about called "Fearless." It's about the best first date that I haven't been on yet. I just try and put myself in the position of "this is really happening,' and what would happen on the coolest first date. So I haven't ever written a song about, you know, that feeling before. I've written songs, but I haven't recorded them or put them on an album, and so I think that would be a cool. It's about angry, not sad . The whole thing - I think it's really going to be cool for people to see that sort of song coming out of me. I would tell you about every single song on the album right now, I just can't wait for you to hear it.”
“She conceived the song while touring as opening act to promote her eponymous debut album: "This is a song about the fearlessness of falling in love. No matter how many break up songs you write, no matter how many times you get hurt, you will always fall in love again. When I wrote “Fearless,” I wasn’t dating anyone. I wasn’t even in the beginning stages of dating anybody. I really was all by myself out on tour and I got this idea for a song about the best first date. I think sometimes when you’re writing love songs, you don’t write them about what you’re going through at the moment, you write about what you wish you had. So, this song is about the best first date I haven't had yet.”
[Hillary Lindsay to MusicRow.com] “I had a writing date with Taylor, and she came to my home. She came in like a fireball. She was young, but she knew exactly what she wanted. She had been working on the song with Liz, but wanted to finish it with me.”
May 30, 2007: First recorded performance of Sparks Fly in Oroville, CA.. Steve from the Inner Circle/Dark Blue Tennessee.com films it and posts it online.
July 10, 2007: [From MySpace] “So lately, I’ve been in the studio on my days off recording a CHRISTMAS album! Haha. Not kidding. It’s a Target exclusive thing, and I’m really excited about it! There are two songs on it that I wrote. More on it later!”
According to its copyright file, Christmases When You Were Mine was written in 2007, but it's totally possible that it was written around Christmas '06. In my opinion, since Nathan Chapman is credited as writer, it was likely written in the studio just for the EP.
Christmas Must Be Something More was written in 2003. The Acoustic Demo from 2003 has never leaked and its existence only surfaced in 2018 thanks to Bob Orrall.
July 19, 2007: Taylor and Brad Paisley stop at the Jamboree In The Hills in Morristown, Ohio, where she sings Permanent Marker, and Fearless, along other songs from Debut.
March 2007: Taylor has written more or less 75 songs, including Fearless.
I've written songs, but I haven't recorded them or put them on an album, and so I think that would be a cool.”
[Hillary Lindsay to MusicRow.com] “I had a writing date with Taylor, and she came to my home. She came in like a fireball. She was young, but she knew exactly what she wanted. She had been working on the song with Liz, but wanted to finish it with me.”
August 2007: Taylor writes The Best Day while on tour with Brad Paisley.
“I wrote this song on the road and didn’t tell my mom about it. I decided that I was going to keep it a secret and give it to her as a surprise for Christmas. I wrote it in the summer and then recorded it secretly with the band in the studio. After it was done, I synched the song up to all these home videos of her, and my family. She didn’t even realize it was me singing until halfway through the song! She didn’t have any idea that I could possibly write and record a song without her knowing about it. When she finally got it, she just started bawling her eyes out.”
September 22, 2007: Taylor posts on MySpace: “I'm just counting down to December, when we start recording the next album. There's so much that I'm excited about.”
August/September 2007 (not confirmed): Tell Me Why and Acting Like A Boy, both co-written with Liz Rose, are registered together in her Music Publishing catalogue (Sony/ATV). Acting Like A Boy is the 66th song and Tell Me Why the 67th. Shortly after, a song called Too Beautiful, solo written, is copyrighted.
The singer told The Associated Press that this was inspired by her frustration at a boy that she liked acting up. She explained: "I walked into Liz's house, and I said, 'I can't believe what's going on right now, I've gotta tell you about this.' I told her all about it. She goes, 'If you could say everything you were thinking to him right now, what would you start with?'" Swift began venting: "I would say to him, 'I'm sick and tired of your attitude, I feel like I don't even know you' ... and I just started rambling, and she was writing down everything that I was saying, and so, we turned it into a song."
“I’d been talking to a guy I’ve never “officially” dated. Sometimes it’s the hardest thing when you have all these dreams of dating them, and you’re getting close, but it doesn’t work out. He would say things that would make me go, “Did you just say that?” It bothered me so much because he would say one thing and do another, do one thing and say another. Because he didn’t know what he wanted, he would just play all these mind games. So I went over to write with Liz and was just ranting and raving about how this guy is such a flake and such a jerk sometimes, and so cool other times. I was like, “Liz, I don’t know what’s up with this guy!” So I just started playing the beginning, “I took a chance, I took a shot. And you might think I’m bulletproof, but I’m not.””
Description of the Tell Me Why Acoustic Demo: 3 minutes and 7 seconds long. An extremely rare worktape demo from the Fearless album sessions. With studio production stripped away, we are left with Taylor singing along to an acoustic guitar using vocals that are softer and carry more emotional weight. The lyrics are different in some places, which makes for fascinating comparisons.
Description of Acting Like A Boy (worktape): Taylor starts this demo in a unique way by stating the song title. The boy Taylor has been dating has been sending her mixed signals. He has been playing a little game, acting like he doesn't care, and picking fights with her. Taylor is not going to put up with this forever. She is going to slip through his hands soon and he won't find her anymore. This song has a very pretty chorus melody.
October 10, 2007: Taylor premieres Fifteen.
[From the Inner Circle] “First performance of Fifteen at the All For the Hall New York. Quality unknown. We do not currently have a copy of this and are not sure if it was recorded. Tickets cost $1,000 each to attend and Taylor was a surprise guest.”
“I wrote this around the story line of my best friend from high school, Abigail. I started everything with the line “Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind” and wrote everything else from that point, almost backwards. I just decided I really wanted to tell that story about our first year of high school because I felt in my freshman year, I grew up more than any year in my life so far.”
October 14, 2007: Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection is released in a limited edition through Target. It will be later reissued in 2009 with a slightly different cover.
October 17, 2007: During an interview with Country Weekly, Taylor says: "I have 30 songs that I want to put on it, which is a little bit difficult because I can only put on 12. I'm real excited for people to hear the new stuff."
November 7, 2007: After months of putting it off, Taylor finishes Change after winning the CMA Horizon award. This will be the last time in which her fiddler Emily Poe would perfom with Taylor.
“That’s when I finished it, because I knew I couldn’t finish it until something like that happened. It was absolutely the most amazing night of my life, getting to see the emotion of all the people who worked so hard for me.”
“At one point, I began to understand that it would be harder for me on a smaller record label to get to the places and accomplish the things that artists were accomplishing on bigger record labels. I realized that I wouldn’t get favors pulled for me because there weren’t any other artists on the label to pull favors from. It was going to be an uphill climb and all that I had to encourage me was the hope that someday things would change. That things would be different. After so many times of just saying that to myself over and over, I finally wrote it down in a song.”
November 30, 2007: Taylor meets up with Colbie Caillat and they write Breathe, for her former fiddle player, Emily Poe.
“She was doing a show in Nashville and I just happened to be in town, so we got together and wrote a killer song. It’s really cool, and I can’t wait for you to hear it. She’s gonna record back up vocals on it for my new album. (They’ll be really loud back up vocals, because she has an incredibly awesome voice and I want it to be turned wayyyy up).”
[Alexa Skill for Taylor's Version] “Breathe is a song about having to let go of someone in your life who you care about and you don't want to hurt but you've outgrown the friendship or the relationship and I wrote this one I wrote the idea for it and Colbie Caillat was in town playing a show and I brought her this idea and she really liked it and we wrote it together, we sat there and wrote the song right before her show, I mean it was the afternoon she was about to play that night. She's singing backup vocals on it that are just so haunting and I'm so lucky because she agreed to do the same backup vocals on my version of Breathe, so it absolutely would not have been the same without her.”
“It’s a song about having to say goodbye to somebody, but it never blames anybody. Sometimes that’s the most difficult part. When it’s nobody’s fault. I was a huge fan of Colbie’s record. When it came out, I fell in love with the way that she makes music. I contacted her management right away and I asked if I could write with her and, sure enough, Colbie had a date coming up in Nashville where she was going to be playing a show and she had the day off. I think she sounds beautiful on it. I’m so excited to have her voice on my album.”
December 5, 2007: [From MySpace] “Speaking of my next album, today was my first day in the studio “pre-planning” for recording it!! My producer, Nathan, and I basically spent all day listening to songs and picking which ones to record first.”
“When Taylor sat down in December 2007 to start planning her sophomore album, she knew she had a tough act to follow — her self-titled debut had just been certified double platinum. “Pressure is one of my favorite things in the world,” Taylor told the Tennessean. “When I heard before my second album, ‘Is she going to experience a sophomore slump?’ it made me more motivated to make sure that didn’t happen. ‘Is she going to keep this fan base?’ ‘Is this thing going to run off the tracks?’ Those things motivate me. My gut instinct has worked so far, and I’m not going to mess with that.””
December 10, 2007: Taylor is in the studio to record Change and Breathe. Taylor Swift goes double platinum. Our Song reaches No. 1. It's her first song to do so.
December 13, 2007: Taylor turns 18. Footage from her birthday party will be later turned in the Beautiful Eyes music video.
[From MySpace] “I had an amazing time at my party. I wore a hot pink dress. Pictures soon! The party was a blast.. My favorite thing about it was this photo booth. All of us were taking pictures in there the whole night. We had tarot card readers and palm readers and all kinds of fun stuff to do. I’ve never really had a big birthday party before, so it was amazing to get that chance! My record label surprised me with this HUGE pink truck!! They’re so sweet to me, and I’ve always wanted a truck.”
Around this time, an alternate version of Christmases When You Were Mine is released thorough Entertainment Weekly.
December 23, 2007: [From MySpace] “We’ve got six songs recorded already, and they sound amazing. I’ve been in the studio with Nathan (my producer. Same guy who produced my first record! But this time we’re co-producing) all month and it’s been so much fun.”
December 27, 2007: The Mirror tracklisting is released through a photoshoot with People Magazine:
Permanent Marker
Tell Me Why
I'd Lie
Fearless
Dark Blue Tennessee
Sparks Fly
The One Thing.
Lyrics to I'm Looking Out For You are also photographed. This song is speculated to be about Gracie Johnson, a friend of Taylor's who was battling cancer. Gracie can be heard at the beginning of the Beautiful Eyes Video and seen in the first picture in the Love Story (Taylor's Version) Lyric Video. She passed away in October 2019.
“Bye Bye Baby [previously known as The One Thing] is a song that I wrote with Liz Rose and it was just one of those ones that it would always get stuck in my head, just the idea that you're facing disappointment when it comes to somebody that you really cared about, and kind of that grand letdown that happens when you're growing up and you're learning to trust people and trying to learn about love and everything and kind of realizing that you have to let go.”
Somewhere in 2007: Taylor writes The Way I Loved You with John Rich and SuperStar with Liz Rose.
[About The Way I Loved You] “I got this idea for a song about being in a relationship with a nice guy who is punctual and opens up the door for you and brings you flowers... but you feel nothing. The whole time you’re with him, you’re thinking about the guy who was complicated and messy and frustrating. So I brought that idea, the title and where I thought the song should go to John. He was able to relate to it because he is that complicated, frustrating messy guy in his relationships. We came at the song from different angles. It was just so cool to get in a room and write with him because he really is an incredible writer.”
John Rich is a Republican and spoke against Taylor in 2018 after Marsha Blackburn won, so this is probably all we'll ever know about their writing session.
There are two demos of Superstar, and on the worktape Taylor reveals that the superstar was born in Arkansas. Fans speculated that it's a reference to Joe Nichols, a famous country singer.
January 2008: Taylor records three more songs for Fearless.
[Taylor to Mix Online] The recording process on this album was spread out over the last year. We started recording last winter, and we did about three songs. About a month later, we did three more.
This is a theory but I think that 3 out of the 6 songs mentioned in December were Breathe, Change (we have footage) and The Best Day (Taylor gave this song to Andrea as a Christmas gift). The other 3 were/are unreleased and that's why Taylor had to lower the number from 6 to 3 during the album press. They might've been The One Thing (now Bye Bye Baby), Permanent Marker and Sparks Fly, but that's just a personal theory. For the January songs, on January 17th, Taylor is interviewed by Blender Magazine, and the interviewer mentions listening to Change and Fifteen (and The Best Days Of Your Lives, the Kelly Picker co-write). The other two might've been Fearless and Tell Me Why.
January 28, 2008: Matt Jenkins opens for Taylor at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. They write a song together called This One's Different. It was probably intended for Jenkins' debut album (which was never released) but I'll inlcude it anyway.
[Description of the song from the Inner Circle] The singer reflects back on how there can be really bad days and nights where it seems like everything goes wrong. But things can change for the better in a single moment when we meet the perfect person. The story in this song culminates in a romantic proposal and wedding. This song is unique because Taylor only sings background vocals and the story is told from the boy's perspective.
Video of Taylor and Matt explaining how she contacted him.
February 28, 2008: Love and Theft open Taylor's concert in Spartanburg, SC. This is likely the period when Taylor and Stephen Barker Liles met and Taylor wrote Hey Stephen.
“We were recording at John and Martina McBride’s studio [aka Blackbird Studios in Nashville] and he was like, ‘My kids are dying to meet you. Do you think that you could say hi to them?’ I said, ‘Sure, have them come and hang out while we’re recording.’ So his daughters and their friends from school – there were about ten of them there – they all came into the studio when we were recording “Hey Stephen” and they loved it. They were singing along with it by the end of it." The children ended up snapping their fingers on the song.”
March 2008: According to Nathan Chapman, Love Story was recorded in March. On March 8th, Taylor posts on MySpace: "The second album is coming along quite nicely. :-)", possibly referencing the latest recording session for Fearless.
[From Everyday is a Fairytale by Liv Spencer] “Taylor wrote this song lying on her bedroom floor in a mere 20 minutes and recorded a rough cut of the track in 15 minutes of studio time the next day.”
[Nathan Chapman to ProAudio] “The vocal was a tracking vocal — that's the vocal she cut live with the band," Chapman reveals. "The band was just acoustic guitar, bass and drums; everything else was overdubbed.”
Nathan is likely talking about these two demos: Love Story (4 min 8 sec / Acoustic in a Studio) Taylor went into the studio to record this demo shortly after writing it and you can hear Nathan (the producer) speaking during the recording; Love Story Justin Niebank Master Mix (3 min 58 sec / Studio) - As the music starts playing, Taylor clears her throat in preparation for singing. This album demo is more like a raw unmixed studio version. Sometimes Taylor's vocal is simply one take with no enhancements. At other times, harmonies are mixed in loudly or there are multiple Taylor vocals all singing together.
[Taylor on Rolling Stone, January 25, 2010] “Love Story wasn’t technically the last one, but it was very, very last minute.”
“This is a song I wrote when I was dating a guy who wasn't exactly the popular choice. His situation was a little complicated, but I didn't care. I started this song with the line "This love is difficult, but it's real." When I wrote the ending to this song, I felt like it was the ending every girl wants to go with her love story. It’s the ending that I want. You want a guy who doesn’t care what anyone thinks, what anyone says. He just says, “Marry me, Juliet, I love you, and that’s all I really know.” It’s sort of told in a character kind of thing, where it’s Romeo and Juliet, and it’s not me saying that I’m getting married or anything...but I think it’s fun to write about it.”
March 2008: Just days after writing Love Story, Taylor has a writing session with Craig Wiseman. She brings Love Story with her, asking if he wanted to finish it with her, but he refused. They end up writing another unknown song.
March 28, 2008: [Rollling Stone Interview] “I’ve recorded six songs, including one that I wrote with Colbie Caillat, that she’s going to throw some harmonies on, which I can’t even wait to hear. And I’m going in to record six more this week and then we have another session scheduled for summertime. We’re really trying to just cut a bunch of stuff and put whatever is best on the album.”
May 10, 2008: Banjo Ben Clark, the banjo player who has been touring with Taylor since 2006, reveals that he had recently played some banjo on new Taylor songs. Through an email exchange with him, I was able to confirm that he played on a Fearless song of which the production was changed and the banjo track discarded. Mr. Clark was not able to confirm which song this was.
Early June 2008: Taylor records Crazier and White Horse.
“I actually wasn’t going to put [White Horse] on the album. I was going to wait for the third album because I really felt like we had the “sadness” represented on this record. Then my agency out in LA set up a meeting with executive producers Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes at Grey’s Anatomy because that’s my favorite show. It would just be a dream come true to have a song on it. So, I played them “White Horse.” It was just me and my guitar and they freaked out. They loved it. They said, “We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.” For a while, we didn’t know if we were going to put it on the record because if it wasn’t going to be on the show, then we weren’t going to put it on the album. Then they called and said they were very interested in the song. We recorded it right away, sent it off to them, and they put it in!”
“White Horse is about what, in my opinion, is the most heart-breaking part of a break-up – that moment when you realize that all the dreams you had, all those visions you had of being with this person, all that disappears. Everything after that moment is moving on.. But that initial moment of "Wow, it's over" is what I wrote White Horse about.”
(About Crazier) [Billboard Interview, March 2008] “There are songs that I wrote when I was 13 that I think are perfect to bring out now. I didn’t get a chance to put ’em on the record the first time around. There’s so much stuff that I’m gonna to pull from the back drawer and then there’s some stuff that I will write today and cut tomorrow.”
“I wrote the song ‘Crazier’ when I was thirteen, and so this song is really a reflection of what I thought love was supposed to be. And, you know, sometimes you write a love song about what you hope will find you, and what you hope you’ll find someday, not about what you’re actually going through. I wrote the song in hopes that possibly it would be in the movie, but I never thought that it would be such a big, prominent song. It’s absolutely one of the most exciting things. The song is playing when the main characters in the movie, Miley and Billy Ray, are both falling in love, with that song as a background. It’s really cool to have that kind of a part in the movie.”
[Co-writer Robert Ellis Orrall on Crazier] “Disney called her up and said, 'We need a fiddle waltz song for Hannah Montana the Movie, we would love for you to sing it. She had one, so she sent it to them.”
Speculation:
I'm pretty confident that the songs written at 13 which she considered to release were Crazier and R-E-V-E-N-G-E.
I'm not entirely sure it was June, but Crazier, White Horse and Beautiful Eyes were mastered together, so I'm gonna assume that they were done in the period between her cameo in Hannah Montana and the release of the Beautiful Eyes EP. Grey's Anatomy was in post-production in that period, so that checks out.
June 9, 2008: Taylor shoots her cameo in Hannah Montana.
July 15, 2008: Beautiful Eyes is released.
[From MySpace] “I’m only letting my record company make a small amount of these - the last thing I want any of you to think is that we are putting out too many releases. I’m not going to be doing a bunch of promotion for it, because I don’t want there to be confusion about whether it’s the second album or not.”
Beautiful Eyes was written by April 20, 2004 and recorded on August 9, 2004 and it was produced by Orrall. The song released is actually the exact same demo, not even remixed, just mastered. [Source: Bob Orrall's Instagram]
I Heart? was written in early 2004 and the demo recorded in June 2004. The released version, available for download if you bought her Debut album the first week at Best Buy, was recorded on November 3, 2005 (instrumentals) and on November 4, 2005 (vocals). Both versions are produced by Bob Orrall.
FAQ: What's the difference between mixing and mastering?
July 2008 - A Sunday: Taylor and Liz Rose write You Belong With Me.
“I came into the writing session with Liz Rose and said: “I’ve got this idea. I had overheard a friend of mine talking to his girlfriend and he was completely on the defensive saying, “No, baby...I had to get off the phone really quickly...I tried to call you right back...Of course I love you. More than anything! Baby, I’m so sorry.” She was just yelling at him! I felt so bad for him at that moment. So I came up with the first line “You’re on the phone with your girlfriend, she’s upset, going off about something that you said,” and I ran that into the story line that I’m in love with him and he should be with me instead of her. It just became this whole picture. It was really fun for us to write the line, “She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts.””
[Liz Rose Interview] “Taylor said, ‘I’m finishing the record on Monday. Let’s write an uptempo song.’ We wrote ‘You Belong With Me’ in one or two hours. It’s amazing to go back to the work tape and listen to it, because you wouldn’t believe the nuances that show up in the album version, too. When she’s writing something, she’s already producing in her head. She hears it all.”
[Liz Rose - BMI Conference] With "You Belong With Me" she called me on a Friday I think, and said, "Hey, I'm finishing the record and I need another song. Can you write on Sunday?" [...] When I hear the worktape I hear the production, the stop and the clap, she was hearing all that when we were writing it. And then she called and said, "We cut it, it's amazing!" And I was like, "We just wrote it? That's cool, ok!"
Description of the worktape: You Belong With Me (3 min 7 sec / Acoustic)- Provides an incredible window into the songwriting process which went into this future hit song. Taylor clears her voice and then unleashes her acoustic guitar as she sings along with great feeling. There are some unique lyrics on this demo including an entirely different bridge. Simply stunning.
July 2008 - A Monday: During the summer sessions mention on Rolling Stone, Taylor records You Belong With Me and other 4 songs.
[Nathan Chapman Interview] We moved a little quick sometimes - most of You Belong With Me took two hours and a half. We started at 10AM and we were done by 12:30. I said, "Hey, let's go to lunch", but on the way back, one of the guys from the label said, "Hey, it's not cool to take that much time for one song". So we did four songs that afternoon. And then her management called and said, "You really wore her out today, can you go easier on her tomorrow?"
July 29, 2008: First live perfomance of Untouchable from the Live from Clear Channel Stripped 2008.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Live from Clear Channel Stripped 2008 is the album which was released without Taylor's approval in April 2020. Before the "official" Big Machine release, these songs were on the Target YouTube channel. YouTube channel EAS Music Official waited until Taylor regained possessions of Fearless before uploading a 4K remastered version of Love Story from this live. Both videos are ethical-sourced.
July 31, 2008: Taylor shoots the Fearless photoshoot. (I got this date from an insider)
August 5 and 6, 2008: Shooting of the Love Story music video at the Cumberland University and Castle Gwynn in Arrington, Tennessee.
August 8, 2008: Change is released. Brian Mansfield, a journalist who has followed Taylor since the beginning of her career, reveals some song titles:
Swift, 18, hasn't finalized the new disc's track list, but other likely songs include Hey Stephen, You're Not Sorry, Fifteen, You Belong With Me, Change, Tell Me Why, The Best Day and Breathe, written and sung with Colbie Caillat.
August 15, 2008: Week of the Jonas Brothers 3D Movie shooting where Taylor performs Should've Said No; Should've Said No reaches No. 1; Fearless is announced for November.
August 30, 2008: [From MySpace] “So now is the time for planning. In 73 days, November 11th will be here and so will the release date of my new album. And so right now I’m in the middle of writing my ‘thank you’ section and thinking about track listing order (wondering “What song should go first..? Or last? How do you get the perfect flow of an album? What IS the "flow” of an album? Hmmm..“). And I’m also thinking about the secret codes to put into the lyrics. [...] This next record is on my mind 24/7, all the time. It never stops. I’m always either listening to a new mix of a song or scanning through pictures to make sure we’ve chosen the right ones, or wondering which songs you guys are going to like the best. I’m just so obsessed with it right now, all the planning. And sometimes I just have to sit back and remind myself that 73 days is not going to be here any sooner if I obsess. It’s still going to be 73 days away.”
Somewhere between July and August 2008: Taylor writes Jump Then Fall and Today Was A Fairytale.
[About Jump The Fall] It’s probably the happiest, bounciest, most fun song to drive down the street listening to. It's one of my favorites on the Platinum Edition. It's just really fun and happy and takes me back to a good place.
September 1, 2008: The first Fearless tracklist is released. Originally, Change was the first song The Way I Loved You wasn't included. Forever & Always was also missing, as Taylor hadn't written it yet.
01 - Change 02 - Fearless 03 - Fifteen 04 - Love Story 05 - Hey Stephen 06 - White Horse 07 - You Belong With Me 08 - Breathe 09 - Tell Me Why 10 - You're Not Sorry 11 - The Best Day
September 12, 2008: The lead single Love Story is released.
[From MySpace] “A lot of people have been asking me what inspired this song.. I think the line that sums up what that song is about is “This love is difficult, but it’s real.” It just means that sometimes you have to fight for love, but sometimes it’s worth fighting for. Like with Romeo and Juliet. Except without the death. :) To me, the song isn’t really about living in a castle and having met your true love at a royal ball. It’s simpler than that. It’s about love being worth it. The hard times, the things that keep you apart, the times when you question it.. I would really like to think that the right love is worth the energy we put into it. So that’s what this song is about. Love and Romeo, and how we fight for those things that we can’t be without. In 1789 or in 2008. Whether you’re 16 or 60.”
Taylor will call the guy who inspired Love Story “a creep” in a 2011 interview.
September 16, 2008: The second Fearless tracklist is released.
01. Fearless 02. Fifteen 03. Love Story 04. Forever & Always 05. Hey Stephen 06. White Horse 07. You Belong With Me 08. Breathe 09. You're Not Sorry 10. Tell Me Why 11. That's The Way I Loved You 12. The Best Day 13. Change
September 18, 2008: The Jonas Brothers are filming their music video Lovebug. Joe meets Camilla Belle there.
September 22 or 23, 2008: While in the studio, Taylor writes and records Forever & Always, a last-addiction to Fearless.
[From MySpace] [...] And I recorded a new song the other day for Fearless. I think it’s fun to put yourself under crazy pressure to finish a song by a certain deadline. That’s what I did with this last song. And that makes 13 songs on the new album. 13….. I think that’s a good number of songs to end up with….<3
“Forever & Always is about when I was in a relationship with someone and I was just watching him slowly slip away. I didn't know why, because I wasn't doing anything different. I didn't do anything wrong. He was just fading. It’s about the confusion and frustration of wondering why? What changed? When did it change? What did I do wrong? In this case, the guy I wrote it about ended up breaking up with me for another girl. Guess I know why he was fading.”
[Taylor to Mix Online] The recording process on this album was spread out over the last year. We started recording last winter, and we did about three songs. About a month later, we did three more. Two weeks before the album had to be turned in and mastered, after all the other songs were finished, I wrote a new song and also decided that I wanted to put another song [The Way I Loved You] that we already recorded onto the album, making 13 tracks instead of 11. I went to the label and said, “Is there any way we could get an emergency recording session? I need to record this new song.” And [laughs] my record label president took a deep breath and said, “Yes, I guess you can do that.”
September 26, 2008: White Horse is premeried on Grey's Anatomy.
September 30, 2008: [From MySpace] “So this week, we’re in “final approval mode” for the album. You know, all the emails that say in the subject lines “Fearless album booklet: FINAL APPROVAL” or “CD design: FINAL APPROVAL”. So I’m doing a lot of approving. And then they send it to the magical CD maker people and they make all the CDs just in time for November 11. Actually, it’s called the distribution branch, but I prefer “the magical CD maker people”.”
Somewhere during the last two weeks of September: Drama Queen, co-written with Martin Johnson is written and recorded. It will be mastered along the rest of the Fearless songs and another re-recording of R-E-V-E-N-G-E (not the one leaked). Since the song was mastered, it's considered an outtake and not a demo.
Fun fact: Along with I'd Lie, Drama Queen and R-E-V-E-N-G-E are the only three unreleased songs to have been mastered.
IMPORTANT PERSONAL NOTE: I know that a lot of people think that Drama Queen is exclusively a Speak Now cut, but this is not my opinion, but what the master engineer (Hank Williams) and Big Machine officially declared. Feel free to not believe them though. It's totally possible it was considered for Fearless Platinum or for Speak Now (and I believe it was) but cut in favour of Better Than Revenge, but it doesn't change the fact that it's also a Fearless cut. If you really have proof that Big Machine falsified documents, call them out, don't waste time coming after me, I just copy-past stuff. They're already considered liars anyway.
October 2, 2008: An interview with Rolling Stone is published, where she says: “I just wrote songs about what I like to write about, which is boys,” she says. Working again with producer Nathan Chapman, Swift spent nearly eight months in Nashville studios recording 50-plus new songs, from which she picked Fearless‘ 13 tracks.” It's unclear whether whether 50 songs were actually fully recorded or if they were just considered.
October 14, 2008: Through Countdown to Fearless, an exclusive campaign by the iTunes Store, Fearless is released as a promotional single.
October 28, 2008: You're Not Sorry is released as a promotional single through ITunes. The physical copies are also completed.
[From MySpace] Just letting everyone know that my new song “You’re Not Sorry” comes out on iTunes tonight at midnight, so check it out! I stopped by the label today and held the actual CD in my hands… It’s finished. It’s ready to go. TWO WEEKS! Let me know what you think of the new song!
November 4, 2008: You Belong With Me is released as a promotional single through ITunes.
November 11, 2008: Fearless is finally released.
March 19, 2009 (not confirmed): [From MySpace] “I've been in the studio all day (I know, I know.. We JUST put out a new album. I think I have a problem, I cannot stop writing songs.)”. The song is possibly Mr. Perfectly Fine.
[Alexa Skill for Taylor's Version] “Mr Perfectly Fine was definitely an early indicator of me sort of creeping towards a pop sensibility. I've always listened to every type of music and even though Fearless is a country album, there were always these pop melodies creeping in. But I really love this song and, I love the bridge, I think the lyrics are just wonderfully scathing and full of the teen angst that you would hope to hear on an album that I wrote when I was 17 or 18 or you know on that cusp.”
April 23, 2009: The Fearless Tour starts in Evansville, Indiana.
October 26, 2009: Fearless Platinum Edition is released.
The six new songs on the Fearless [Platinum Edition] are songs that I either recorded and wrote really recently, wrote maybe a year ago and almost put on Fearless but decided not to for one reason or another, or a songs that I wrote when I was 14/15 and re-recorded recently. It's a good mixture of songs from different time periods throughout my life. When I make an album, I always have a general theme for it. And when I hear songs, or go back and listen to old ones, there are some that I know fit in with the theme.

"why don't you get settled on the couch, and i'll bring you whatever you need." ( yunhwa to seongmin! )
seongmin had always been a very independent person, the type to do everything himself instead of relying on others. it was a habit he developed as a kid and, to this day, he still didn’t know how to handle people doing things for him  —  even if it was something as minor as this. they had been friends for awhile now and he shouldn’t find this to be strange or unacceptable in any way  —  yet he seongmin still tried to get up, despite having twisted his ankle at practice earlier that day. but, as he was trying to tell himself that it wasn’t that bad, he thought it was perfectly fine for him to walk around, even if putting weight on his leg wrong made him wince lightly with the pain.
Tumblr media
ignoring the feeling and instead just putting less pressure onto that one ankle, he tried to follow yunhwa into the kitchen with an unusual slow pace  —  but determined nonetheless.  “ no no, it’s okay. i can help~ ”  he hummed, smile on his lips.  “ what kind of food did you get today?  i can bring it out to the room and you can bring the drinks? ”

Clegan Olympics AU - Beacon
Beacon the therapy dog! USA Gymnastics Goodest Boy! From this ask
Takes place at U.S. Olympic Trials in June.
Find the rest of the Olympics AU here
Author's note: Since the Olympics are like a real thing now, I have a feeling I might start writing some extra little things for this AU outside of the "main timeline" I've developed. Like this. Or that massage gun scene. People wanted Beacon, so Beacon you will get. I’m also giving Beacon a bigger role on the competition floor itself because it’s more fun that way.
I'll have to figure out a better way to put things like this into a masterpost.

Don’t fuck it up. Don’t fuck it up. Don’t fuck it up.
Don’t don’t don’t don’t don’t
Don’t fuck this up John.
Breathe. Focus. Focus focus focus
Hold yourself together. Don’t think so much. Stop thinking so much.
It’s just a normal meet. Nothing weird. Not at all. You’re fine. Your leg will be fine. You wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t fine.
Under-rotate the landings if you have to and you’ll be fine. Wear the brace even though it bruises the shit out of your shin. Small price to pay.
It doesn’t hurt you’re being stupid you only have three events left you’re halfway done you’re doing fine it’s going to be okay stop thinking so damn much.
Don’t.
Fuck.
Up.
Don’t-
Bucky’s internal monologue is interrupted by something wet pressing against his arm. He glances down to see a moist black nose sniffing at him, nuzzling at his hand. Again.
Beacon. USA gymnastics certified good boy, their emotional support golden retriever who the entire team has fallen in love with. He’s been making the rounds in between rotations, cheering up athletes and lightening the atmosphere of one of the most stressful days of the season: the fight for a ticket to Paris. The gymnasts play with the golden every chance they can get. It’s only rotation 3 and already Curt has had to be half dragged to the apparatuses because he doesn’t want to stop playing with the dog.
“This is clearly more important,” he told their coach, who could do nothing but roll his eyes and gently shove Curt on to his next event.
Everyone can benefit from a therapy dog hanging out at the meet. But the dog in question seems to think Bucky, in particular, needs all the emotional support in the world.
Bucky huffs out a breath and feels his mouth attempt to lift into a shaky smile that falls immediately. He reaches a hand out to scratch Beacon on the head. He’s sitting on the floor in the center of the stadium at Target Center, his left leg stretched out in front of him, awaiting the start of rotation 4. He can’t decide if he’s actually starting to feel pain in his knee, or if it’s his mind playing tricks on him. He’s been paranoid all day.
It’s the U.S. gymnastics trials, a meet that Bucky didn’t even think he’d be at six months ago. It’s June, and he didn’t even start tumbling on floor again until April. Didn’t stick his first landing until just two months ago, and even then, most of the time it was onto a mat rather than onto the spring floor itself. The doctors warned him not to come back too soon. They told him he may never compete internationally again. They begged him not to do floor, at the very least, because of the pressure it puts on the lower body.
But he’s never been one to back down from what he believes he needs to do, no matter how sick to his stomach it makes him feel. So he didn’t listen, and now he can’t help but wonder if they were right.
He didn’t decide to compete at Championships, much less Trials, until the eleventh hour when he could no longer stand the idea of missing out on the mere chance of competing in Paris just because he was scared.
Scared.
Ridiculous.
Scared is not something John Egan has ever felt about gymnastics. Fearless, they used to call him.
He supposes they still do, whoever they are. The commentators. His teammates. The whole country, if he’s feeling egoistic. They don’t see the spiraling abyss that is his mind. All they see is the U.S. gymnastics poster boy who was counted out three months ago due to a catastrophic injury but crawled his way back up from the ashes with a blind determination to get back on top.
They can call him fearless if they want to. But sitting here, in the middle of the stadium, surrounded by other team USA hopefuls, he doesn’t feel fearless at all. He’s survived floor, pommel horse, and rings. He should be feeling more confident by now. He should be calming down the further into this competition he gets. But he finds the opposite to be true. His heart keeps beating too fast and he can’t make it stop. He’s twitchy. He’s nervous. He’s tense.
He hates it.
Maybe that’s why Beacon the therapy dog keeps seeking him out in a gym full of other athletes who must be feeling nervous, too. Something about dogs being able to sense how you’re feeling, right? Maybe John’s anxiety is just that much more obvious.
Great. He went from being cocky, carefree, confident John Egan, USA gymnastics champion to being… well, an anxious mess of a comeback story who can’t afford to let the world see how badly he wants to disappear at this moment. All they see is the smiles he gives the camera, the high scores he puts up on his events, and the way he walks around this stadium with his head held high like he already knows he’s back on top.
The dog, on the other hand, sees the way his heart is pounding too loud, the way his fingers twitch in his lap, the way he keeps trying to rub the tension out of his bad leg.
Bucky finds it funny that a dog can see right through him when no one else can. And yet, it works. As he pets the dog, he feels his heart calm down. The tension eases just the littlest bit out of his shoulders. Beacon nudges his hand again and lays down, crawling half into Bucky’s lap.
“You’re a good boy,” Bucky says. He takes another deep breath.
“Is he bothering you?” Beacon’s owner asks, even though they know full well that Bucky must be freaking out a little if Beacon keeps returning to him. The dog always knows who needs him.
Bucky laughs shakily and shakes his head. “No. No, not at all.” He runs his hand over Beacon’s soft hair, looking into the dog’s innocent brown eyes, which look right back at him. “Actually, would it be okay if he stayed with me for a little bit?”
Beacon’s owner smiles at him and tells him of course that’s okay. And so, leash in hand, Bucky finds himself with his own personal therapy dog for a little while. Every time he starts to feel nervous again, the dog knows. He starts licking Bucky’s hand or cuddling against him or booping him with his nose. And it always makes Bucky smile and take a deep breath.
“You’re monopolizing the dog,” Curt tells him when he finishes on still rings and returns to Bucky’s side.
“He’s mine now,” Bucky declares. Beacon nuzzles against his leg as if to prove the point. “He’s my new bestie.”
Curt gasps dramatically as he reaches for his water bottle, pressing a hand over his heart. “I’ve been replaced!”
“He’s a hell of a lot cuter than you,” Bucky teases. The dog smiles when Bucky smiles, like making Bucky smile is a great achievement. Like he’s saying yes! Be happy! Good job!
Curt reaches down to pat the dog on the side. “Well we’re moving to vault, so you’re gonna have to give him up to the rest of us.”
Bucky’s vault goes off without a hitch, other than his brace slamming uncomfortably against his leg with every step as he sprints down the track. It’s not the event that nearly ruined his life, but it puts his bad knee through more grief than any other event except maybe floor exercise. He nearly collapses after he sticks the landing out of pure relief, the adrenaline still coursing through his body and making his heart pound even as his leg feels like jell-o. He shakes himself out, wills the feeling to return to his leg, and slowly, carefully, hops down off the vault podium.
Before he can even sit down, Beacon is at his side, tail wagging excitedly as he smiles up at Bucky. “Hey best friend,” Bucky chuckles. He eases himself down into a chair as one of his coaches kneels in front of him to help him get the brace off and set to work massaging his knee. The dog stays loyally at his side through the whole ordeal, his head resting on top of Bucky’s thigh.
“Got yourself a friend,” the coach says.
Bucky smiles, his breathing starting to return to normal. “Sure do.”
After parallel bars, Curt and Croz pat him on the back and remind him that he’s almost done for the day. He’s so close. Just one more rotation. Just high bar to go.
Just high bar.
Bucky feels like he’s moving in slow motion, slogging his way through reality with far too much effort as he smiles at his friends and walks back towards the chair he left his bag on. He only has one event left today. Just one. But it’s the one that almost ended his career.
It’s the event that he’s been afraid of ever since. The one that he spent months retraining himself to do, just trying not to bail out of his release moves because of the fear he couldn’t control. The one that made him scream in frustration and think about throwing in the towel because if he couldn't get past the damn mental block what was the point? As recently as the day before US Championships, he was still freaking out halfway through and letting himself tumble off the bar because his chest would seize up and his leg would throb and the world spinning around him would make him so dizzy he thought he might vomit.
It was a freak accident. Theoretically, he knows that. It’s not something that’s likely to ever happen to him again. But he is not in the business of luck at this point. Luck is an altar at which he’s never worshiped, and he sure as hell isn’t going to now. He’s forcing himself to accept the fact that shit could go south, and he has no control. All he can do is try his damned best to push himself through and do what he’s trained his entire life to do.
It’s just another meet. Don’t think about it too much.
He didn’t start competing again until early May. At that point, he wasn’t even doing every event. Hell, he wasn’t even doing dismounts. On high bar, parallel bars, and still rings, he’d simply do his routine and then ease himself off the apparatus. Everyone in attendance, every athlete and every judge, would cheer so loudly for him anyways just because he was there. Just because he was doing it at all.
But that won’t fly here. Not if he wants trials to count. Not if he wants that ticket to Paris.
And he told himself yesterday that the win was being here. It didn’t matter what happened. He got himself here, and that was what mattered. But it’s not enough anymore. Not now that he’s in this stadium, pushing himself through this competition with a dizzying mix of anxiety and pure, ferocious determination coursing through him. He won’t have won until he’s on a podium at the 2024 Olympics with a medal around his neck.
“You’re so close, Bucky,” Curt is saying as he walks away from parallel bars. “We’re almost done. We can do this.”
But it’s not his friends that break through the muffled underwater way he’s experiencing the world around him. It’s a happy-go-lucky golden retriever.
Beacon breaks away from a group of other gymnasts when he sees Bucky walking towards him, and the other guys can’t even be disappointed about it when they see the way Bucky collapses onto the ground and wraps his arms around the dog. Beacon licks his cheek and nuzzles at his ear, and Bucky hides his face against the soft fur, willing himself not to lose it. His chest feels tight. His leg is aching. It’s not in his head, it’s real. And he’s trying not to let a dull but taunting pain, which historically he would’ve pushed through no problem, pull him out of Olympic contention.
But the dog won’t leave his side. He knows what his job is, and he tries his best to take all the fear away in the time they have before Bucky starts the final rotation.
Stay calm, Bucky tells himself as he pats the dog on the head one more time before heading over to high bar.
Stop thinking so much, he tells himself as he adjusts his grips over his fingers and around his wrist.
Don’t fuck it up, he tells himself as he rubs chalk over his hands.
And then his coach is lifting him to the bar and he doesn’t have time to think anymore. Just do it. You can do it. You have to do it.
“You got this!” Curt his yelling. “You’re good! You got it!”
So Bucky takes a deep breath and pulls himself up, sends himself into his first giant, then his first release move. His second. His third.
He doesn’t think. He lets himself fly through the air, lets his body do what it knows it has to do, and when he lands, he can’t keep the grin off of his face as he yells out in triumph.
It’s only his second time doing a full dismount off high bar in a competition since his accident. His second. And he stuck it. He did it. He fucking did it.
Now he just has to do it all again tomorrow.
As he hops off the high bar podium, overwhelmed with relief, Curt and Croz flank him on either side, cheering him on as he closes out day one of trials well in the lead. As he walks away from the last apparatus, though, his eyes find a happy golden retriever, staring right back at him. Beacon pulls against his owner’s leash, and the owner lets go with a laugh, letting the dog charge at Bucky.
Bucky grins and drops to his good knee just in time for Beacon to barrel into his chest. Bucky scratches the dog all over, laughing as Beacon licks his face and wriggles around in his arms.
“You gonna be my good luck charm?” Bucky asks. “You gonna help me get to Paris?” The dog licks his nose in reply. “Good. I’m gonna need you to help me through this.”
When asked what it took to get to the 2024 Olympics, Bucky will talk about the excruciating recovery process, the training, the frustrating days spent in the gym, the never ending support of his teammates and coaches. He’ll talk about everything it took to get to Trials alone. But then he will also always give credit to Beacon, USA certified good boy, because he honestly believes he wouldn’t have made it through Trials without him.
Beacon will return in a future event finals update

-> AU TIMELINE:
the au takes place during will’s second year at bc and daisy’s first
she met will when she was 15 and he was 16
she didn’t like will at first because he thought everyone liked him “why don’t you like me? everyone likes me.” “maybe because you think everyone likes you.” “apparently you don’t.” “wow, and he has a brain! maybe i need to rethink this not liking you thing, huh?
he pesters her so much about the not liking thing that she starts to actually like the guy -> they hang out without gabe a couple of times and she starts to realize why people like him
they date in secret when will is in his first year at bc and daisy is in michigan finishing up her final year of high school - it was easier to hide their relationship when they weren’t together 24/7
but gabe and everyone else found out about their relationship the next year when daisy joined them at bc

since there seems to be quite a bit of overlap between debut and fearless songs, where do you draw the line between the two? like do you consider don’t you -> you all over me to be part of debut? and also superstar? i’m just wondering because (based on your timeline, maybe it’s changed by now, but) tied together and mary’s song came after those four fearless vault songs and then should’ve said no came after superstar. like in your head i guess is there a point where you feel a clear shift? like okay we are in a new era now. this is fearless.
i dont really classify the writing of debut as an era of writing the way i do the other albums? like, she's writing with the hope of making an album, but she's not writing An Album, if that makes sense. she wrote over 120 completed songs during the debut sessions (and those are just the ones i have knowledge of), which is easily three times the amount of any other album.
i cut the debut sessions off on august 12 2006, because that's when taylor posted this on myspace:
SO for the past couple of days I’ve been in the studio FINISHING my album. Oh yeah, I said it.. finishing it. That’s means it.. is… DONE. At least my part is done, I’ve sung every vocal. They still need to mix and master it and do all that technical stuff that I will never understand. haha. So I’m particularly excited about a new song we recorded for the album, I’ve written every song on this album and this one is no exception.. But the funny thing is, I wrote it about twenty minutes before we recorded it. It just kind of fell out of my mouth and now it is in my cd player. haha. It’s called “You Should’ve Said No” and it’s about being cheated on.. dun dun dunnn… Yeah. I can’t wait for you to hear it. Another song we did vocals on is called “Oh My My My” and I’ve played that for a few acoustic on-air interviews and at shows, so some of you might be familiar with it.. But it’s about this couple that grows up together, and its the story of their adorable beautiful love. haha. Then I did vocals for a song called Cold As You. This song contains some of the best lyrics I’ve ever written in my life, and I just can’t wait for this ALBUM TO COME OUT. Here’s the hook: “And now that I’m sitting here thinking it through, I’ve never been anywhere cold as you”.
so, i align the vault songs written before august 2006 with debut more than fearless. it's less of a harsh line for me than mr perfectly fine being written in 2009 (mr perfectly fine is a speak now song i will face taylor swift and walk backwards into hell), because she probably was considering them for fearless at one point, but push comes to shove they weren't written for fearless, if that makes sense
