PM Modi dials Neeraj Chopra, praises his grit and mother's sportsman spirit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Neeraj Chopra after the Indian athlete won the silver medal in the men’s javelin event in Paris Olympics 2024. On Thursday (August 8), Neeraj threw 89.45 metres at Stade de France in France and delivered his season’s best performance, but it was not enough for him to fetch gold.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal with a best throw of 92.97 metres while Grenada’s Anderson Peters bagged bronze with a throw of 88.54 metres. After the athletics event, PM Modi reached out to Neeraj and congratulated him for bringing home the silver medal.

The PM also asked Neeraj about his adductor niggle that had been troubling him in the lead-up to the quadrennial event in Paris. Earlier this year, in June, Neeraj had said that he wished to take advice from doctors to deal with his injury.

The Prime Minister also hailed Neeraj’s mother for her sportsman-spirit after her son could not defend his Olympic crown in the javelin final. "We are happy with the silver. The one who got the gold is also like our son. He was injured, so we are happy with his performance,” Neeraj’s mother, Saroj, has said.

Neeraj did not make the best of starts as he made a foul throw. But he made a brilliant throw in his second attempt to enter the silver medal position.

Neeraj also became only the third Indian after wrestler Sushil Kumar and badminton star PV Sindhu to win medals in back-to-back Olympics.

After missing an Olympic quota at the Asian Qualifiers in Bishkek, Sehrawat was determined yet anxious. It was then that he received a motivational call from Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medallist.

Sehrawat recalls Sushil's advice vividly: “He told me not to get too defensive and to aim to fight the full six minutes. He emphasized not being indecisive and sticking to my attacking style.” This advice was crucial in helping Sehrawat secure India’s first and only men’s Olympic quota at the World Qualifiers in Istanbul.

Despite his prowess in attack, Sehrawat acknowledges the need to strengthen his defense, a crucial aspect at the senior level. Coach Lalit Kumar ensures that Sehrawat focuses on his strengths while improving his defense to be well-rounded for the Paris Olympics.

The first picture is from a local 'akhada' that I had visited last year during happier times. It was bustling with more than 20 wrestlers; both rookies and national level players; males and females. However, this time the place seems almost lifeless. The synthetic turf which adorned its floor has been rolled up and duly packed, as if the person knew that the wrestlers are not coming back for a long time.

However, I'm greeted by wrestlers Guddu, Shubham, Prashant and Nishant who are paying a visit in their regular clothes. "We still come here every day. Just for some light exercises," they say. This includes non-contact activities such as climbing up the rope, push ups, biceps curls or tilling the akhada.

Prashant has recently bagged a gold medal in one of the junior categories at the recent state level tournament that happened in April. His brother Nishant is new to the sport but he's following the footsteps of his brother and father. Shubham won a bronze in that tournament, and along with Guddu & Prashant he was looking forward to the more senior categories when the tournament had to be cancelled mid-way due to the second wave of covid. But there's a silver lining that they are particularly happy about. "My class 12 board exams were also cancelled because of the second wave," says Prashant with a big grin on his face.

The wrestlers have a lot to say about the recent case of Sushil Kumar, but would prefer to keep it off the record given the stature of the two-time Olympics medalist. "We'd love to comment once the court's verdict is out," explains Guddu. However, he does say that it's not uncommon to get embroiled in a spat as a wrestler.
